Last year when I compared the multitasking capabilities between the Galaxy Tab & iPad Pro, the Galaxy Tab had 2 features that Apple really didn't have an answer for: Samsung DeX & proper external monitor support. Fast forward to 2023 & thanks to iPadOS 16 - the iPad now has a new multitasking mode called Stage Manager which brings along with it - proper external monitor support. Today, I wanted to share my experience with Stage Manager & how I think it stacks up against Samsung DeX.

Dex Supports 4K 60hz displays since updating to OneUI 5.0. You should have Goodlock installed and have Multistar installed within it. In Multistar, select Samsung Dex and enable high resolutions for external display. Once enabled, reconnect/restart Dex for the change to take effect. After restarting Dex, under Settings>Connected devices>Samsung Dex, you should see UHD in Display Resolution.

@@thao It's too bad that Good Lock and MultiStar is still required to "unlock" features that should simply be baked in to the standard DeX interface. Expecting people to know to install MultiStar (assuming it's even available in their country) is unrealistic.
There's no reason DeX shouldn't just support the full number of on-screen active apps and full resolution options out of the box. Samsung just keeps shooting themselves in the foot. iPad definitely takes the cake when it comes to external resolution support, recognizing even odd aspect ratios unlike DeX.
I've been a DeX user for the better part of 4 years now and I keep holding my breath for things like this to improve but they just aren't getting the point, it seems. Thao, if you have any connections back to Samsung, please emphasize these points! P.S. Stop by the r/SamsungDeX subReddit sometime! Big fans of you over there.
Unfortunately forcing dex to 4k on multistar introduces a ton of input lag...and I'm using tab s8

Yeah but, the bigger issue with Samsung tabs are that they run too many apps in the background and slow the device AND they just don’t last…I’ve had 2 Samsung tabs and together they only lasted 3 years ..my 6th gen ipad is still working well after 4 years…just got an m1 iPad Pro refurb for less than an iPad Air…..looking forward to many years of future proof fun with it. I won’t buy Samsung tabs anymore, period.
Having owned an iPad Pro and a Samsung S8 Ultra, I find Dex more of an essential compared with stage manager which feels kinda like a cool gimmick. The iPad feels like it’s just blown up on a big screen compared to Dex which feels more like my tablet has transformed 😮
Dex being available on more than just a tablet does give it extra marks too like my s22 ultra 😅
DeX is a copy-and-paste Windows wannabe with little thought or effort. A sorry effort for a tablet, and in fact, Samsung has not even bothered trying to make it blend with the native tablet UI. Apple has tried to merge the two, and although it is only a few months old, compared to DeX after a few months, it is far more sophisticated and promising.
@@andyH_England lol. Dex is far ahead of stage manager. I feel at home using Dex. It gives me the windows interface and functionality I'm used to

@@alexpeter1 while dex is further ahead in general and i do use it, i just feel like a bit... iunno, it feels more clunky in general compared to stage manager, hard to explain. but with that feeling id prefer to scroll through 4 apps in stage manager rather than 4 apps in samsung dex.
Stage manager just feels like a mess to me. I've been using Dex with no issues over the past few years. I have an iPad pro so when external monitor support was announced was excited. After trying it out, that excitement didn't stick around at all.
The problem is that windowed apps on a tablet are dumb (especially an 11-inch display). I'd buy a W11 2-in-1 if that is what you really want. Stage Manager is not for windowed apps, as the tablet interface is better for most. It is really for multitasking for pro users. So you can be working on Procreate whilst rendering a video and running an Excel formula. It is really niche and highlights why all these moaning iPad users wanting a windowed setup should buy a Mac.

Contrary to Android, where apps can resize to fit virtually any aspect ratio, on IOS it's either a phone app or an iPad aspect ratio, unless apps are updated to support more resizing options and most aren't. It will take years before apps are updated to support more sizes and many probably will never support it. This was an advantage of iPads, apps built specifically for the iPad, not resizable phone apps, now it backfires.

The main problem of Samsung is they’re downright hiding DeX. I mean my S8 already had DeX, it was an exklusive feature no one else had. Really great, a PC environment with your phone. Did they actively advertise it? No. It’s the same with Goodlock. Many modules have great, exclusive feature that would enhance stock firmware. But no, that’s for enthusiasts to know or some rare TH-camrs like Thao to show.
With Google and its own tablet I hope we will finally get better Android tab app support.
The worst would be Google copying Samsungs tab features halfhearted (like they did with other Samsung, Huawei features in the past) and then Samsung removing its own features and snapping to this worse new standard. We will see …

Agreed, I had it with my Note 9 back then and it was really cool to try on the TV back then. Unfortunately they never marketed it that much or put too much support on it
I remember they used to promote Dex back when S8 or S9 was released. I used to use it often back then. Then, the only "improvement" I remember about Dex was wireless Dex. It's powerful, but it lacks development. That, or it simply lacks promotion.
I can't say the same with Good Lock. I don't think they could promote something that is not officially available globally. While there are workarounds, I don't think they should promote unofficial ways either.
I think Dex mode is better. I hope apple does improve the stage manager in the future updates.
Stage Manager has significantly better support for display resolutions and aspect ratios. The ability to move apps between screens is also a big advantage. A lot of what makes Deax good is buried in "advanced features/labs" or withing Good Lock which is just silly considering you can't expect people to go digging like that to enable what ought to be basic functionality.
I love DeX. I've been using it for years as my primary PC, but Samsung needs to get it together. Others are catching up if not surpassing them - Motorola Ready For, for example, overcomes many of DeX's silly restrictions.

@@willy7968 iPad definitely has a slight software advantage over Android. Although Nadroid now has LumaFusion which was a big step forward, both iPad and Android have a long way to go to be comparable to Mac OS, Windows, and Linux.
@willy7968 most of the software on iPad is severely watered down versions of their computer counterparts even though iPads M2 processor could handle the work. Making the processor overkill for what the iPad can do and the extra power useless.

Yes, the M2 processor is fast but nah, it’s not sensible to maximize the processor performance cos there are other iPads which are less powerful and you need to consider the battery life too
dex has more functionality, however, the stage manager animations look sooo nice and the iPad has way better pro app support. this has inspired me to explore dex more on my tab s7

I'm glad to see more people start talking about Dex. I do all of my work on my s21 and 6s. While I love using it, I do wish Samsung would pay more attention to it. Phones and tablets are becoming so powerful that properly implementing Dex would definetly bring out the true potential of mobile devices.
Let's face it, cars, candy bars, soft drinks, there's a variety because everyone has different tastes and needs. I've tried stage manager and I think apple's on the right track. But I now use dex as my main computer along with my Fold 4 and I absolutely love it. It's truly all I need. But I'm sure what I prefer isn't for everyone. Choose what you like and enjoy it!
Stage manager has great things which can help like way better external monitor support and simplicitic UI but the whole thing is a mess of bugs, limited support and no integration to ipad and I wish to be with the iPadOS software. Even Dex has flaws but it has things to remember easily if you were from windows, freedom and more professional look for my tastes. And I agree Thao in putting pressure on Samsung to make Dex incredible but I would use Dex with lumafusion any day.

I have bought an Samsung tab s7 plus before 2 years. Now the performance of the tablet is very worst. iPad is better than Samsung .

I'm not an Apple guy, but Stage Manager looks pretty nice. Of course it's not going to be like Windows; I like what they did
I feel like Stage Manager is a good implementation of a multi window situation on a touch interface, you don't want windows on top of other windows and having to do too much resizing with your fingers on a relatively small screen, that's what Windows 8 on touch screen tablets got wrong. But once you plugged a mouse and external display it should offer more precise options.
Stade manager is such a terrible way of multitasking...
My heavy use for Dex comes just in Dex mode on my Tab S7+. I appreciate the views on the video and I think Dex has had some great updates but some of those features are behind Good Lock too where it seems
Samsung beta tests things like higher resolution output past 1440p.
Overall great coverage and I do hope with Apple putting Stage Manager in and external support, Samsung puts more effort into Dex. It has been for me a mostly good laptop replacement when I need that environment and makes my Tab S7+ so versatile, I love it! :D

@@MrMehdidou98 I'm using the Samsung keyboard folding case with trackpad. Came with my system as a bundle for half off or something when I bought it. I find it works well about and I love it has basically a way to hold and cover the stylus too.

No, the full pic AOD defeats the purpose of AOD, apple realized that later and updated the iphone to support the normal all black AOD

@@Atem_in_the_streets Yes that's Samsung's fault, all things being equal the black screen is better for battery and prevents oLeD burn in. The battery drain issue with AOD is because of the chipset being inefficient, the snapdragon 8 gen 2 fixes this though so we'll see next month how the S23 performs

Samsung has perfected DEX over time, Apple still has to do some work to catch up
DeX is far from perfect, and Samsung still finds ways to break things with each update e.g., OneUI 5 removed the recent apps keyboard shortcut - Meta (WinKey) + Tab. Now you either have to keep the soft nav buttons in the taskbar to access recents, or lose the ability to access them. They left the Alt + Tab shortcut but that only shows running apps rather than recents.

Almost no learning curve with DeX, the Stage Manager on the other hand, looks very complicated.
Stage Manager is straightforward, but you have to open your mind away from a Windows UI, and some people suffer from Stockholm Syndrome, unable to relinquish years of using Windows machines. DeX is familiar as Samsung has simply baked on a Windows UI. A cheap way to get a desktop mode, but uninspired and a wasted opportunity.
@@andyH_England arbitrarily limiting you to groups of four apps is nonsensical. Not letting you place or resize the windows exactly how you want them is nonsensical. Stage Manager is a convoluted solution to a non-existent problem so far as UI/UX goes.
@@nickthaskater I use one app per desktop and use virtual desktops for my workflow so Stage Manager is okay.
The limit of four apps is due to Apple limiting multitasking to 4 apps on the iPad display and 4 on the external display. It would confuse people if you had six apps open, but only 4 were active. This may change in the future, but this is beta, so Apple is limiting it in the medium term.
You seem very anti-Apple, Stage Manager has been around two months and you are trashing it. I remember DeX, and after two months that sucked much worse. Give it a chance! A fair person would.

Samsung DEX may be better but Apps is what makes a Tablet replace a Laptop. You have tons of pro apps on the Apple eco system- Davinci, Affinitiy Publisher, Affinity Photo, Defner notes and much more. Plus Apple’s Office Suite which is much better than Microsoft’s version for Mobile. Android needs to up the game for me to choose DEX over Stage Manager.
I always blame andy rubin for make android cannot open other format file other than APK/AAB only which make android partialy unflexible for open source OS
A harsh truth most android users didn't want to swallow. Even for basic office stuffs and transferring files. The iPad got fully featured Pages, Numbers and Keynotes FOR FREE. And Files have more options to group and sort directories, it even have the column mode from Mac Finder which makes navigating through levels of directories so much easier. Also the drag and drop method is also a lot more intuitive in iPad than Dex's built in File Manager. And for most part you don't need to install apps to open files because the quick look can show you what is the file is similar to preview on Mac while on Dex you really need to have a specific app to open specific extension.
Never stop making videos. They are the best even though there are tons of similar content on YT, but yours are simply the most entertaining. One thins I would like to add is that your videos doesn't show up on my feed unless I go to the subscribed tab (who does that?) or specifically search for your channel, which is weird since it should have been there since I'm a frequent viewer of your content, so maybe investigate what could be the problem? I'm just trying to say that if I'm having that problem there is a good chance others have it too and you miss out on viewers. Hoping nothing but success to you and your family!
Yes, That's just a TH-cam problem, it's beyond her control. Some TH-camrs are also experiencing such, and apparently the work around to this is to unsubscribe and then subscribe again. It resets it. That's what those TH-camrs advise their subscribers.

Dex is honestly head and shoulders above stage manager.... Thao i think reached a bit in trying to pull stage manager to dex's level but the only thing SM does better than dex is output refresh rate..thats it.. having experienced it... Dex is already soo good i would just say maybe next gen chips or the ones after- i think the need for a pc would be gone for majority of the population.
you are one of few content creators out there showing both devices as they really are, and letting know people that both are great options. with cons and pros from both sides. and not the typical apple or samsung fanboy video.

I tried Stage Manager on Mac and I hate it. I tried Stage Manager on iPad and I kinda like it. It's deliberately made like that to work best with finger input. I hated my Surface when I don't connect it to any keybaord and mouse, it's good that Apple didn't just put the Mac window managements on iPad because it will be completely unusable. Which is something Samsung learnt and the reason why "new Dex" exists
I think at this point stage manager and samsung split view is not even comparable, let alone samsung dex. Samsung is already have capability to have 3 apps open in split view, Am i using it a lot ? Nope maybe only 10% but if snapdragon 8 gen 2 is able to do that what make my ipad M2 chip not? Proper multitasking capability doesn’t make me abandon my laptop, all of my heavy duty job is still done in my laptop. Tablet at the end of the day is just tablet they never replace my laptop, just a good travel companion

I just switched the the Galaxy Tab from an iPad Pro. There's a few things I miss: control center, spotlight, and the better optimized iOS apps! I use Firefox on desktop so I figured I'd use that on Android too because fuck Google, fuck Chromium, I love that Firefox is open-sourced, but the difference between the app on iPad verses Android is night and day. DeX is awesome, however the window UI sometimes cuts off part of the app, sometimes when resizing an app it switches to phone sized and the UI gets messed up until it gets resized again.
I highly recommend iPad to anyone until Android catches up, it will eventually surpass iOS but I think there's lots of issues at the moment.
How many years did it take Apple to do this? That's why I don't use Apple. snobby and way behind the time in so many ways. Not in every way... but ... yeesh.

Thao, thank you for the excellent coverage. The Stage manager at this “stage” is just useless. If not running full screen, it is wasting space. If running full screen, it is basically the standard iOS UI.
The reason for this horrible implementation is that Apple just wanted to implement it the cheapest way. From what I could see in different TH-cam videos, I conclude this:
- It is basically the standard iOS UI which allows you to have several apps/app pairs to which you can switch with the task switcher.
- It has also the same limitations: some apps are not resizable. Let me guess: unlike in DeX, only one App can use the speakers at the same time, correct?
- The only difference is that the task switcher is now always visible on the left side and the application dock always visible on the bottom. You could hide both, but this will not change the wasted space.
- You can also easily see that the resizing of the applications is limited to the same 3 widths you have in the standard UI. The different zoom factors just make you believing you would have more resizing options.
- This is also the reason why each app always needs the full height and must be snapped on the top of the screen. The standard iOS UI does not allow stacking apps on top of each other.
Actually, the only main difference to the standard iOS UI is that it can now show you the other “app pairs” in the background always overlapped by the active app/app pair, resulting in that huge waste of space.
BTW, this also explains why you can move the apps/app pairs from one screen to the other: there is simply no specific Stage manager mode of the app. The apps are just running in their standard iOS UI.
Get a life. Stage Manager has existed for three months, and DeX for many years. Compare with DeX after three months and you will see Stage Manager is much more advanced. Really, impatience and pre judgementalism are sad in today's world. Give it time.

Dex works with tablet or phone..as as long as you have one Galaxy product you'll always have Dex.
I won't get into what's missing here. Or why Dex is still the GOAT. But I'm happy to see Apple finally offering this feature. I love to see these guys taking ideas from one another. that only means that we the consumers win in the end. No matter what our preferred operating system is. Love this channel. For me, with M1/M2 SoC, I rather see iPad Pro runs on macOS. That would easily be a worthy Microsoft Surface Pro competitor.

DeX is a copy of a Windows UI, so 85% of the world will see it as the default and close their mind to anything that tries to be different. MS has a natural monopoly with Windows, and Samsung just copying Windows will obviously get influencers to praise it, as it is a comfort pillow of familiarity. Sad to see with Apple trying something different; people (the usual anti-Apple mob) dismiss innovative approaches. Makes me think that reviewers simply want an Orwellian 1984 Netscape.

I have a Samsung Tab s 4 and an Ipad pro 2021. I feel like i like my « vintage » samsung much more. The Ipad just sometimes feels like a mess. Like cmon , stage manéger just makes everything so overwhelming !!!! DeX actually feels like it gives u benefits instead of disadvantages . I’m SO disappointed…

DeX is also an advanced multitasking feature, but revamps the Home Screen & Dock to look more organised like a desktop OS.
Apple is not trying to replace their computers
Samsung for the most part does not have their own computer. So have Dex replace a computers for Samsung just makes sense
Samsung is just bring really slow with Samsung Dex upgrade and app support. It is more like windows you have a hunting and found app and see if it will work and how will. Some apps just straight up tell you we have Samsung deck support like LumaFusion: Pro Video it just got Dex support.
Dex is slowly becoming a big name OS. We still have to remember Dex is still just Android. And Apple stage manager is just iPad OS.
As of right now Dex for the win. Still would be cool to have any app store with apps that just work on Dex or Dex only apps
IMO Stage Manager is stupid. The apps being on the left side taking a lot of space while the dock is there, is so so stupid. Also, you can’t resize or move opened windows as you please? What? And why are they overlapping? The point of multitasking is to multitask, if you have one window blocking another one, you aren’t really multitasking.

The limitation of 1440p for Samsung Dex is not true. I can connect to a 4k screen in full resolution from my Samsung S20fe 5g. You just have to install Multistar and enable Higher resolutions. Very simple!
Long gone are the days when iOS was intuitive. Lol. What a convoluted mess Apple has become. I used to make fun of Samsung for this very thing. But while Samsung has become more focused and makes use of a more traditional desktop interface that anybody can understand, Apple gone gone in the opposite direction.
Is it just me who thinks Stage Manager is one of the most stupid features. You lose space, create more clutter and constantly wrestle with the software when doing anything. I’m surprised people are praising it so much given how you literally have to learn something completely new for something that has existed for decades, and on top of that, it’s just worse in every way. I used Dex briefly before and it just works, there’s no reinventing the wheel with that. I’m never gonna be turning the stage manager feature on my iPad. I understand apple did this to increase productivity or whatever, but if I’m gonna have to play with the size of an app every other time I touch it, I’m sorry that’s impeding my productivity, not increasing it. If apple simply gave a dock like on MacOS, I’d be the first one to praise them, but alas
Stage Manager does have a dock. It does not resize apps randomly in iOS 16.3 beta.

are these companies trying to reinvent the laptop? If you want what a laptop does but on a tablet. Why not buy a damn laptop? I found the video interesting but Tablet suck compared to laptops. You can plug in ethernet and or USB on a Tablet and i am sure nowadayas tablets won't even have headphone jack. Just buy a Laptop.
When Android supports Auv3 Audio Unit plugins, I’ll certainly jump on Dex! I love the form factor of the Samsung Galaxy Tab!

Good video! Samsung dex is the winner in my opinion. Dex just needs a way to drag windows from monitor to device!
I use both iPad Pro and an Tab S8+, Dex is better in my opinion, and im way more on the apple side of life. Stage Manager has been incredibly disappointing lol
I wanna see someone use the iPads new external monitor support on a nexdock so bad. I want to buy one for my iPad Air 5 and steam deck. Those are my only two computing devices I have besides my iPhone
Stage manager is cool to have for iOS user but compared to Dex meh. Hands down Dex win.
My z fold 3 is a phone a tablet and a desktop/laptop all in one fantastic form factor. Let's see any other device do all that and still fit in your pocket. Dex is just icing on the cake for me
I have both and i prefer DEX for Display Extension, especially because i dont need a keyboard or mouse to do it.
I will definitely be buying a Samsung Tablet because it actually looks like a real laptop and I love Oled screens!!

Apple, as per normal coming up with a fantastic idea that they didn't know someone else came up with years ago.
I don’t think this was mentioned, but even if you have stage manager on your iPad you apparently also need to have the M1 chip in order to connect your iPad to an external monitor. I have the 4th gen iPad pro and I can’t connect my iPad to my monitor :(
