The biggest mistake I made was confusing cEDH with tEDH. I always wanted to play the most powerful stuff I could in EDH, but assumed the cEDH scene was basically just tournament-ready decks and assumed I would get absolutely stomped. When I realized I could play at a cEDH level without having to sweat at tournaments, I jumped right in. None of my deck would win a tournament, but I just couldn't stay at the casual level.
@@Shank40 Given the context, I'm guessing the t is for tournament, meaning they assumed that the focus of cEDH was on tournaments and nothing else when in reality cEDH is more about maximizing a decks potential.
Our home group's scoop rule is to allow the scoop, but continue through the current turn as though they were still there with their permanents and all. Sometimes life happens, but if someone "needs to leave" in response to a dockside loop for example, we note the relevant game pieces and keep the loop going as if they were there. Same for keeping hand count consistent for things like Jeska's Will, etc.
Love this video. The big selling point for me on cEDH was the 'we have an agreed pregame discussion' vibe of cEDH. I will never go to a CommandFest/MagicCon without at least one cEDH deck these days, as it's super refreshing to just embrace power and play from time to time, and I *love* a pregame conversation.

Great episode! I'm new to cEDH this year and this was a great listen. The only thing I would add on webcam games is having tokens, dry erase tokens or post it notes and black sharpie on hand for when your opponent interact with your board, ex Swan Song and you need to represent a 2/2 bird. Also having a clear way to represent your mana pool and cards in hand on camera, high contrast dice colors, will give players that info without having to ask.

Seriously fantastic podcast episode. I've dipped my toes in CEDH in my set pod but am so nervous to do a local LGS tournament. 100% taking these resources, updating my lists, and giving it a go now.
I started cEDH not long ago, and have played about 50-100 games in that time. I have almost exclusively played Urza, Lord High Artificer. I agree with the advice of proxying a strong deck to learn the format. It literally requires an entire different perception and mentality to learn compared to normal EDH. It has warped my entire view of what cards are good and not good. Like in bloomburrow, the most exciting card for me was Into the Flood Maw. I can’t go back to casual anymore. Bonus Thought: cEDH eliminates the awkward social queues you have to worry about in normal games. Love everyone being on the same page.

Gitaxian probe specifically is in an interesting spot. Gitaxian probe says you look at player's hand, not that they reveal it so while they can't say "I don't have this card" that you saw they don't have to admit to having the card either since that would be giving information to two players who didn't see the card
CEDH is like driving in the left lane, sometimes the right lane "can be faster" but it's about the intention - left lane is for people who have a destination and are doing everything they can to get there
I'm making a Marwyn deck. It mostly presents a win T3, sometimes T2. It's bot wildly resilient, and will definitely never be top tier. But it can't just be ignored at the table. It lets me play along without mortgaging my house further lol.

Y-Y That being said, my favorite quote was in this video, and it summarizes *why* I love cEDH so much. "All decks are combo decks" and "A lot of decks are Storm decks..." That is not only my favorite mechanic but also my favorite archetype of decks. Even my "casual" EDH decks are combo decks, more often than not. I love, LOVE having big, explosive turns and then being able to protect myself and my combo. I absolutely adore Rube-Goldberg machine-type decks. I play cEDH because that's what it's all about, and I never have to worry about having a deck that's "too OP" for the table. I have my goal, and that's the only thing that matters to me. EDIT: Also, regarding the proxy discussion, Etsy is an amazing resource for proxies with CUSTOM ART, which are actually painted/printed on mtg-size cardstock.
I used to be down on proxies, but after yalls and others take on it I've lightened up on them. It's just rough that at the shop I go to there is one individual that brings full proxie decks and I hear in the corner some people say "I don't want to play with him he only has proxies none of his cards are real." And I understand the feeling on both sides it's not an easy discussion for everyone.
@@mindlessmonk3322 yea I feel like beating people with proxies makes them feel better about not being able to afford them in a way, however purely in cedh I don’t mind proxied lions eye diamonds and mox diamonds, it’s hard for a lot of people to drop cash like that
Thanks for all the vids guys. I tried to get into cEDH when Magda was printed and it was sick though I didn't play much, and I went on a long hiatus from MTG. Now coming back to cEDH somehow the deck is even more insane with how many lines and pivots there are and new magda cards and lines that are strictly better than the old stuff that I just got overwhelmed. I agree that Magda and Sisay are hard ones to start with, would also add Inalla to that list lol. anything with crazy lines and pivots is just a lot of info dump taking up space in your brain when starting out learning the meta and table interaction points.
As someone who's been trying to step into cEDH I felt the don't focus on commander and focus on win condition because I just want to play my favorite commanders so bad it holds me back 😅
My first cEDH deck was K’rrik, was pretty straightforward and easy to pick up. I recently built thrassios and Francisco and that deck was a bit of a learning curve
I really like your channel. I haven’t played cedh but I’ve enjoyed watching it for awhile because I am very spiky and generally like playing the strongest versions of decks, but I do need to keep the power level close to my playgroup that sometimes plays precons LOL. Tough to balance my card choices and my friends’ fun
On the topic of testing new cards (especially ones you don't want to tutor for regularly), my friends and I have come up with a system. At the beginning of the game you're allowed to put the test card into your opening hand and only draw 6 cards to form your opener. Before you do so the table gets to decide if that card is too impactful to force into your opener. But the caveat is that everyone else at the table gets to do the same thing. More on that caveat, you can't just go get a hate piece for the card someone is trying to test. Obviously this works better at just high power tables, not cEDH tables. But its nice to get a feel for a card when testing. Thankfully the pods I tend to play in are good friends that understand the importance of getting information about the cards you play. It has worked wonders. I can give specific examples of cards we've tested (even ones that were pretty powerful) and how the table reacted, etc. Granted everyone has to be on board for this to work.
My favorite thing with cedh is being so welcome with proxies I’ve made like 4-5 cedh decks still trying to find my favorite but I’m pretty sure I found my list.
As a Kenrith fan and a player who is starting to think about cEDH in deck building, I think Kenrith is a good starting point. I get to think about every color and what cards I need for my meta. Kenrith also provides a wide variety of play styles on one body. When I found myself using some of Kenrith's abilities more that others, it has helped find the keepers and cutters.
I grew up playing EDH with my local group of friends. Over time we all moved to different parts of the country. We still play EDH and cEDH on a regular basis online. Rather than doing web cam we use a program called Cockatrice. Makes it easy to try out any deck you want at a moment's notice. I think you should add this to your list of ways to play.
26:23 the doggy trying so hard to jump to Cam's bed was the highlight of this episode Edit: I belive Yuriko is one of the best cEDH decks for beginners... yes, you play many ninjas and some other "non-efficient" cards... but it's easy to play, very striaghtforward, and you also play many staples.. and I think it's no as expensive as the top 6-8 decks
@33:00. Enter the Infinite Labratory / Jace draw deck to instantly win is another you see in tournaments. It doesn't always get top 16, but it is always there
@28:00 Kinnan is no longer a top 4 deck, it'd be lucky to make a top10 list these days imo. I think Nadu is the final nail in Stax's coffin (assuming it stays legal). I see the format as turbo, midrange, and win-without-spells (Nadu, Sisay, Magda) that crush midrange given time
We got a rule for proxies Maximum five proxies and everybody has a list where they are written down So basically we got High Power Commanderdecks and when somebody wants to play cEDH we are siding in those five cards For example my Kinnandeck has nearly everything, but i am proxying - Mox Diamond - Cradle - Transmute Artifact - Grim Monolith - Gilded Drake
Banger episode. Thoughts on picking up Ob Nixilis as a commander to learn cEDH with? - none of the 4 or 5 colour options you guys mentioned caught my eye and kinnan / talion seem complex for someone new to the format. Been playing Ob Nixilis manual storm for a while and I feel like the pivot to cEDH with that deck wouldn't be overly difficult.
Dylan @45:38, "The ego you must have must be insane," he says to my Chatterfang Cedh deck :P j/k I absolutely loved the episode, loved the deck recommendations and the proxy recommendations!
If you make a play on the way out, it would be against the person doing the best in the tournament. This usually won't happen, but it is possible and reasonable.
I've wanting to try out cEDH for a while, and I think that i want to try out that Ratadrabik deck I've seen making the rounds. Looks like a lot of fun.
I really love Dylan talking about how you shouldn’t listen to your opponent, since I’ve seen the table try to sway Cam on this channel SO MANY TIMES. ……. Moral: CAM- LISTEN TI THIS ARVISE AND TELL THE TABLE NO! ROTFL
Been playing magic for years, got into edh in 16, cedh in 2019. Took Najeela to cedh learned format then brewed a bunch of bad decks (still fun but bad) and settled into Sefris. It's fringe tEDH (has two or three top 16s) but my win rate within discord playgroup is 28% over the last two years. Been climbing up recently in midrange meta. I personally don't play a lot of tEDH but love playing cEDH. Everyone should keep brewing their fun commanders and try to break them, keeps the format exciting and healthy
"Our rule 0 is 'Does anyone have any pregames?'" is a joke I make for people kind of getting interested or are just starting out in cEDH. For the reason described in the vid. We all know what to expect, we're playing to win. For all the good things that cEDH allows for, probably my favorite is: The possibilities are pretty much whatever your imagination is. If you can think it up, you can make it reality and there are people that will help out if you end up stuck trying to take the strategy to it's absolute limit.
I just started playing cedh this past 2 or 3 months having a lot of fun been playing inallia and now am trying my hand at building my own deck with the new tamiyo to see if I can make my own build from scratch
About bluffing and lying, JudgingFortheWin made a sweet video about information in mtg according to the rules, what you have to or are allowed to do with different types of information. Really Insightful!
When I’m picking cedh decks, I like to think about the strategy I want to try out and not necessarily the win con I want to play like you guys said. For example I just put together Ob Nixilis cause I get to play “bad” cards that look like fun (kederect parasite, all will be one, etc)
I have several EDH decks in various power levels from ultra jank to essentially cEDH. I am having a hard time tuning my cEDH one because my playgroup isn’t exactly there with their decks. Its Vial Smasher/ Sakashima and its main wins are Thassa’s Oracle/ Tainted Pact stuff and/or Twin combos.
So happy I found this channel, thanks to the guys for showing cEDH as an accessible, friendly format rather than the competitive boogeyman I thought it was. My biggest barrier of entry is just the cost of the cards. Is the format really that proxy friendly, or are people just saying that?
I genuinely think blue farm is a good beginner deck for cedh. Same argument as najeela where you're playing 98 good cards and the lines and how to execute them are just the most common. Gives you the interaction and the card draw to stay active in the game.
Getting into Cedh is easy and difficult at the Same time Just startet getting into with transitioning my Omo Simic Deck into a Kinnan ,biggest Problem are the extreme Expensive Staples Like Mox Diamond or Gaias Cradle and the fact that in Germany the Scene is small in Comparison to the US
Just proxy the expensive cards, bro. cEDH is like the only format that’s really proxy friendly and you absolutely take advantage of that. cEDH isn’t about who has the biggest bank account; it’s about who’s the best pilot for their deck.
I am coming here with the hottest hot takeaway about what decks new players should play. If you are coming from a creature combo place and you like to fiddle and figure out the lines on the fly since it is impossible to actually practice all the lines tayam is a great option. This is for a very small subset of players that come from decks like ghave and stuff. However honestly if you are like that kenrith and sisay creature combo are still better, but it is a fun puzzle deck and I personally have enjoyed it a lot more than sisay
I enjoy the idea that non proxy tournaments would have a different meta, but it has the fight your wallet problem. A format where each player build multiple singleton decks with no overlapping cards between each set of decks could acheive the same meta diversifying effect without the wallet problem.
You can turn the wallet/"how long you've been playing for" problem into a resource allocation problem by setting a budget limit, making it clear that only _current_ prices count. (Then you can allow proxies, because those budgets would still be a lot of money for many people.) If you want to explore that meta, that's the best way to do it.
Love the video. Really looking into cedh. I was hoping I'd hear something different, though honestly. Hearing them say most decks win with oracle kills the excitement. That and hearing your commander is often not impactful makes it feel like it's not commander.
I would thoroughly recommend Magda as a beginner deck. Wins a lot, has a nice linear game plan. Gameplan is so easy that you can just concentrate on playing the table
MPC fill does have every single art of every single card, as well as custom arts people have uploaded! if you do print from MPCfill the boarders are going to be wonky.
I think you are a bit wrong on "spite" plays. Many people do engage in spite plays, yes. However, doing as much damage to the person killing you as possible is in fact a winrate maximizing play provided you inform them you are going to do so beforehand. By informing them, you raise the cost for them to commit to remove you from the game, which may deter some attacks. And if they go through with the attack, in order for your claim to remain credible in future games, you have to act on it. What is important is communicating this beforehand so that the cost is actually raised in opponent's eyes, unless you know each other and they know you will do so. This can also be used as a strategy against certain hate pieces by announcing the intent beforehand.
A little bit but not as bad. In casual I have a friend who, when any of his spells are countered, or removal is used on his creature (even if his board is obviously ahead) he will straight up attack the crap out of you for no reason
I think the best new-player deck is T&T. 4 color. Thoracle etc. But having dorks and tymna gives ypu so much slack in what hands are keepable. The nadu/breakfast versions that are popular now are fire
My play group done a add a color where u play a 1 or 2 color commander and add a color to see how good the commanders could be. Like having kinnan with black.
Last tournament I was in, I killed myself with a Necro to try to stop Blue Farm from winning because I needed the draw. Blue Farm still got there and I'm not sure how I feel about the action that I took. I felt like I was playing to my outs the best way that I could, but it felt weird.
On your video you mentioned that you use your phone as a camera to play on a spelltable. What's the trick? I keep having problems using it on the phone I'm using it's a Pixel 4a.
I'm curious have you ever tried or have any information about a "cEDH Cube". 😊 I thought I would be fun to build a (proxy friendly) cube so friends can get a first taste of cEDH before building their own deck. And meanwhile I just try to combine my favourite formats.. but it has been difficult. Any advice?
I've played casual for years.. I just got into cedh and took my K'rrik deck and fully tuned it. Do you think this is a good commander to start with going into cedh?
On Conceding The Game, if you have a legit game action that would deny a player on you pod their advantage, is that still allowed. For example. A Yuriko player attacks a player with no blockers but has Necropotence. Should the player with the Necropotence player be allowed to activate it until he loses because of 0 life but before the Yuriko damage and ability resolution?
I’ve never understood the proxy argument. I recently got into magic and was taught by someone who would strictly use high power casual to cedh level decks against me and my friends’ precons. After he started understanding the game more, I wanted to be able to actually compete with him. He’s more well off and has been playing for close to a decade while I picked it up a year or two ago. Now he complains that I proxy my decks but will also complain when the rest of us team up against him like that isn’t our only chance of winning
The biggest mistake I made was confusing cEDH with tEDH. Edit: I belive Yuriko is one of the best cEDH decks for beginners... yes, you play many ninjas and some other "non-efficient" cards... but it's easy to play, very striaghtforward, and you also play many staples.. and I think it's no as expensive as the top 6-8 decks
I see the format as turbo, midrange, and win-without-spells (Nadu, Sisay, Magda) that crush midrange given time
This aged like fine wine
the pupper in the background 😭😭😭 love them
We got a rule for proxies
Maximum five proxies and everybody has a list where they are written down
So basically we got High Power Commanderdecks and when somebody wants to play cEDH we are siding in those five cards
For example my Kinnandeck has nearly everything, but i am proxying
- Mox Diamond
- Cradle
- Transmute Artifact
- Grim Monolith
- Gilded Drake
the titans (tidesprout and hullbreaker) also withersmog and twincaster might be important to list as wincons too
Banger episode.
Dylan @45:38, "The ego you must have must be insane," he says to my Chatterfang Cedh deck :P
j/k I absolutely loved the episode, loved the deck recommendations and the proxy recommendations!
Talion was my first CEDH deck, simplified Blue farm
same. I've been going back to it now and then with different lists. my playgroup hates when I play it hahaha
DO THE THING - PLAY TO WIN
Love the metal shirt! Snagged one up!
That sunny reference got me good lol
Oh thank god... I havent heard you guys make a Sunny reference for a while and i was gettin worried
Best channel on TH-cam
the casual to cEDH pipeline is real, I’m just along for the ride.
My favorite channel ❤️ hoping to see cam plays yuriko
14:59 Can we PLEEEEEASE get a short of this moment so I can send it to my playgroup?! 😭😭😭
Just play cockatrice, none of the cards online are gonna be real, and in person ppl are generally pretty proxy friendly in non-constructed formats.
Im making Basim (Blue/black) my first cedh deck but im making it more on the low power end and still focus on the artfacts. For my friends mainly.
Old gnawbone is my favorite deck and is what I would consider to be my pet deck that I’ve put a lot of money and time into
I genuinely think blue farm is a good beginner deck for cedh. Same argument as najeela where you're playing 98 good cards and the lines and how to execute them are just the most common. Gives you the interaction and the card draw to stay active in the game.
Getting into Cedh is easy and difficult at the Same time
Just startet getting into with transitioning my Omo Simic Deck into a Kinnan ,biggest Problem are the extreme Expensive Staples Like Mox Diamond or Gaias Cradle and the fact that in Germany the Scene is small in Comparison to the US
Just proxy the expensive cards, bro.
cEDH is like the only format that’s really proxy friendly and you absolutely take advantage of that.
cEDH isn’t about who has the biggest bank account; it’s about who’s the best pilot for their deck.
Plus you can build a cedh viable Magda for $50
@@VvVLuffyM2 I'm not hearing that nonsense. Don't think you can even get Dockside for that
The way I have explained it I the past to other commander players is, most of the time the game is won on the stack rather than board state.
cEDH feels like the legacy of Commander. Which is great, because I like legacy
MPC fill does have every single art of every single card, as well as custom arts people have uploaded! if you do print from MPCfill the boarders are going to be wonky.
I think its worth noting Malcolm and Glinthorn as commander combo you'll see.
i miss living near an lgs big enough for cedh
What it all comes down to is communication as follow through, then all is fair and good. 👍🏼
A little bit but not as bad. In casual I have a friend who, when any of his spells are countered, or removal is used on his creature (even if his board is obviously ahead) he will straight up attack the crap out of you for no reason
Distinguishment. Now that's a word best said with a raised eyebrow
My Artisan deck is Gonti, my regular EDH Casual Deck is Don Andres, so we all know who my cEDH spiritual commander is... I need me some Etalian
Yeah, cEDH and tournamentEDH as a different thing is an important clarification to make.
How insane was that? Lol Kinnan with black or red would be insane
Snoop combo is probly the more common kiki combo as it tends to be a 1 card combo of goblin Recruiter.
I thought I would be fun to build a (proxy friendly) cube so friends can get a first taste of cEDH before building their own deck.
And meanwhile I just try to combine my favourite formats.. but it has been difficult. Any advice?
26:30 we have a special guest on the couch!!!!
Which 4 decks would you recommend to proxy for a battlebox for new-to-cedh players?
Maximillian Pegasus Commander. Oh, Dylan boy and Cam boy…
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Would you consider a Sythis deck cEDH? I’m not sure if it falls under one of the archetypes you mentioned or not.
1:34 he said the thing!!
I've played casual for years.. I just got into cedh and took my K'rrik deck and fully tuned it. Do you think this is a good commander to start with going into cedh?
Don't forget Protean hulk! Pepperidge farms remembers. 🍣
Have you guys ever just taken the first commanders you built and just turned them Cedh? Been trying to do that with my first deck
I'm trying to get my Marneus list as close as I can to a good cEDH list. Do you all have any pointers or videos about it?
