I've read this book about 8 times in a year or so... and you guys talking about it make me want to read it again RIGHT NOW. I'm a HUGE sci/fi and fantasy reader among other stuff, and this is among the greatest of the genre EVER. Incredible read.
Took me three years after i saw this video to finally buy and finish this book. Being broke and and living in the nerd barren wastland of my hometown sucks but it was always in the back of my mind and when i finally got the chance i snagged this little gem of a book and it didn't disappoint it hit all of my interests and im so glad you introduced me to amazing book you guys.
I saw the book on the shelf at my local comic book store, and I didn't think much of it. A friend of mine picked it up and would not stop talking about it. I said, That is stupid. He said "Check it Out," so I did. AND ITS THE BEST THING EVER!!!!!
I grew up in the mid to late nineties and early 2000s and eyen I was geeking out over this book. I rarely read books a second time, but I am reading it for the third time at the moment, thats how good it is.
I've listened to the audio book once and I'm actually already starting to listen to it again and I must say it's even better the second time. This is by far my favorite book (granted don't read many), but I also highly recommend it. Great video guys!
Aside from the plethora of reasons you guys already stated on why this book is *amazing*, the social commentary in it was fantastic. A lot of sci-fi books, movies, and games have tried to capture the magnitude of technology's effect on our daily lives, and the consequences of such dependence, but damn did this book take the cake. Not only is it a total page turner, it's thought provoking as well. Also, I could hear Ernie Cline's voice as I was reading this. I realized quickly that he *is* Halliday. Also super excited for the film, there's a rumor going around that *CHRISTOPHER FUCKING NOLAN* will direct it. How could this possibly get any better?
Thanks you guys for recommending this book. I just moments ago finished the book, and it was amazing. Probably my favourite book now (taking first place from The Hobbit.) Wow it was so great.
I was having a rough week and decided to download this book hearing Wil Wheaton was reading it and I have to say it has really hit me in alll the right ways. Being 30 nearly every reference laid out I have known with only a few misses but it is just so much fun. Being a DnD guy hearing one of the greatest modules ever described was awesome. Allgengamers was about the third podcast I heard in the last month talking about this book so I had to get it and I was pleased to say the least. Thanks!
This book is amazing! i listened to the whole Audio book in two days. Thank you guys so much for the recommendation! Big fan of your work and every one of your reviews.
Decided to check this one out based on your recommendation. AWESOME BOOK! Thank you guys! I read the entire thing over the span of about 2 weeks, and that was only because I had some things come up and I didn't pick up the book for about a week somewhere in there because of it. One of the most fun Sci Fi books I've ever read. It's is the most deep, thought provoking book ever? No, but it's a fun book that doesn't take itself too seriously. Can't wait to see what they do with the movie.
Thanks for suggesting this. Such an awsome listen through. I got the audio book and listened to it like crazy. Being born in the 90s didnt experience much other 80s media besides video games so it was awsome to learn more about the 80s got me super interested. Thanks!
Thanks for recommending this to me! I downloaded the audiobook right after seeing your review and have been listening to it ever since. Just finished it and I have to say that it was a very enjoyable experience. While he's not the best writer out there, he definitely made a compelling story/characters. A must read for videogame fans.
im just a 19 year old kid, but i am a full time pop culture addicted geek just like ernist cline. i can name several of each off the top of my head. 1st, ill start with music: Def Leppard, Boston, Joan Jett, Quiet Riot, Billy Ocean, Journey,Tom Petty, Roxett, Kiss, and Scorpion. 2nd, movies: Escape from NY, National Lampoons Vaction, Aliens, ET, Scarface,Blues Brothes, 101 dalmations, The Rescuers, Small Soldiers, Great Escape, Clockwork Orange, The Abyss, Godzilla(with matthew brodrick), Face Off. 3rd, sitcoms: The Jeffersons, Frasier, Seinfeld, The Golden Girls, Simpsons, Family Matters, Cheers. and 4th, games: Rampage, Metal Gear, Spliter Cell, Final Fantacy, Mortal Kombat, GTA, Mario, Sonic, Donkey Kong... THE LIST GOES ON!!!!!
I've not read a book since Harry Potter 5 and I only got a quarter of the way through that before getting bored, however I decided to download this onto my phone using kindle the day this video was put up. I am now 70% through the book and am totally hooked. I woke up at 4am this morning and just read it until 7am. I am 22 so I missed out of the 80s and don't get all of the nostalgia that older people might get but it is still so good. The story is so gripping and I can't put it down.
Hi Johnny and Robman, after watching this video I had to read this book. I grabbed the audiobook and holy crap I was blown away! I work at the Princeton library here in New Jersey at the University, and I had them display the book where everyone else can enjoy it! Thanks guys!
Thank you, AllGenGamers and MetalJesusRocks for talking about this book. I've read the book and listen to the audio book in one sitting. I loved the book and thank you so much for telling everybody who listen to the AllGen podcast about it.
i download this last night onto my tablet on the kindle store app and im all ready 27% threw it and WOW it the best book i ever read so far :D i cant stop reading it. thank you for making this vid and point this book out to me.
This is the second time I've heard about this book in two days, and the only two times in fact. I can't wait to read it as, being a child of the eighties myself, it sounds like something that is so far up my street it's practically my neighbour. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the audiobook on iTunes over here in the UK. It comes out over here in paperback next month so I'm definitely going to get it then. Thanks for a great enthusiasm-packed review.
Nothing wrong with books. Any media with great stories is good by me. The passion you guys have passes from video games to pretty much anything you talk about, which just shows how good this channel is. Keep up the great work.
I just finished the audiobook after PeanutButterGamer recommended it. Loved every minute of it. Though I have to say [minor spoilers] it is pretty funny to hear Wil Wheaton call himself an old geezer as he's reading.
I bought it after Johnny and Gamester were gushing about it on the podcast. It was excellent! I really hope you guys have any luck getting the author on as a guest.
My friend was telling me about this a few weeks ago, I bought it and am about 1/3 through it. Absolutely hooked! I've had to force myself not to read it too quickly because I want to make it last. Definitely recommend!
I was born in 1982. I'm 200 pages in right now. This book hits notes that I thought were peculiarities about myself. The book even references Dark Crystal briefly. I know very few people that know or even remember that movie. I can't wait to get through the rest of this gem. It is unimaginably detailed about that time period. Thanks for this review.....I'm now off to go watch Wargames.
Sounds awesome. I was born 88, so I grew up in the 90s and 2000s, but I've always been fascinated by 80s culture. Video games and movies in particular.
I just finished this book and absolutely loved it. I was born in 1971 so I understood almost every 80's reference mentioned. I wish there was more coming. A sequel? A trilogy? Fingers crossed!
I Just want to thank you guys for this review, Reading,"Ready Player One" led to a second life for me, in which I tracked down every reference and experienced everything I could. I have read this book a hundred times, and I plan to read it a hundred more. Thank you again!
Cool review guys, will definitely check out the book, but yes it does sound similar to William Gibson's Neuromancer - at the very least in the setting.
I watched this review last night, watching your videos in the playlist..backwards, yeah, but anyway I went to WH Smith at 9am today, searched high and low for this book and they had just one copy left! How lucky, paperback only but hey, atleast I got it! Gonna sit back and get started on it now, thanks guys :)
Wow! That looks like an awesome book!! I probably won't get some of the references cause I did grow up in the late 80's, but I will have to see if I can get my hands on a copy :D
I finished reading it yesterday after watching this video and it really is incredible. I was so hooked. I haven't read a book in nearly 10 years and I doubt I will read another for a while but it was so worth it. Incredible.
I'm still struggling to put the experience into words, though I'm planning on putting up a review once I can properly compose myself. All I have to say is you must have unbelievable self control cuz I couldn't stop once it started. 16 hours straight. I can honestly say it's one of the most unbelievable adventures I've been on in my life and I never left my house.
Thank you so much for the suggestion! I immediately downloaded and bought the book, absolutely loved it! It was a real page turner and I read it non stop!
I highly recommend the audiobook done by Will Wheaton... something about his voice, and his acting in particular, in it... not saying he's the best actor out there, but he did an amazing job in this novel.
I actually bought the book new after I finished my friend's borrowed copy. I know I'll want to re-read eventually & I felt like should be voting for this sort of material - and the quality of it - with my money!
Thank you so much for recommending this book. I really enjoyed it and wouldn't ever have discovered if i hadn't seen this video. Your awesome and I always look forward to seeing your new video's. Keep kicking ass!
I am 130 pages in and its absolutely amazing. I wasn't born until 1988 and i was surprised about how much of the references I got, lol. It's awesome. I can't wait for the ending. Parzival FTW.
Yeah dude, you'll love it regardless of when you were born. Many of the references are to old '80s games, arcade to DnD. If you're into nerdy stuff, it's right up your alley.
Seriously, I guess I've been holding out not checking this book out when it was first recommended to me. I really liked this review though:) I'm equally interested to hear this book reviewed on this great literary radio show I try to follow called TheBook Report. I checked their website (where I tend to stream past broadcasts) and I saw this book listed for this week's broadcast -- really interested to check it out now.
The book seems very interesting. I recently purchased the book on Amazon and most likely will get the book next week. Thanks for recommending the book you guys.
thanks for reccomending the book. just reserved it at my local library. I also would reccomend "why video games matter" by tom bissell. its a great read too
All kids who grew up in the 80's were privileged to be part of the wonderful beginning of great video games, among many other cultural changing moments. I for one will be checking out this book! Thanks guys!
...the audio book (i know it sounds weird but...) painted a picture in my mind so perfectly it was almost lime watching a movie...highly recommond this book as well and i will be at the midnight release of this movie when it hits theaters ...MODERN DAY CLASSIC!!!
Holy shit. Ok so I got the book for my birthday last Saturday. And ever since then, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LET GO OF THIS BOOK. It has gotten to the point where I have barely done any of my homework or study for any of my tests, BECAUSE I CAN NOT LET GO OF THIS BOOK. ITS FUCKING AWESOME!
I finished the book in 36 hours. You honestly can not stop reading it. If you love video games or anything in geek culture you will love this book. Crossing my fingers for how well the movie turns out.
It looks like this book is getting a lot of great review at the amazon website. I will have to check this one out. Also if the movie studio can do the book justice then I think a movie for it could be really amazing.
After watching your review I managed to get my hands on the book, 2 days and i'm almost at the end, It's so freaking AWESOME. Mecha-gozilla vs Ultraman? MY DREAM COME TRUE! Thank guys for making me discover this really great book.
The book was alright. The use of video game and 80's references is probably what helps sell the book to some people. The book falls apart towards the end and seems to be rushed to find a way to bring the book to a close. If you really want to read this book, don't waste your money, there's an audio book out there "somewhere." A tad overhyped I would have to say.
That ending was AWESOME!!! I loved *SPOILERS IN 3...2...1...* the battle at Castle Anorak and when he turned into Ultraman, i screamed, Ultraman was part of my childhood and it's from the 60's
I'm so glad that is book is being enjoyed by so many people! I want to read it again. Thanks for the shout-out!
Have you read it again yet? :)
Found it on accident in library and loved it. Didn't understand much of the references but still didn't matter bc it was written so well.
+Ethan Josh hey man I found your comment xD
I've read this book about 8 times in a year or so... and you guys talking about it make me want to read it again RIGHT NOW.

Just finished reading this in just a week. Learned about it from your last episode of the AGG podcast, greatest book I've ever read.
I've listened to the audio book once and I'm actually already starting to listen to it again and I must say it's even better the second time. This is by far my favorite book (granted don't read many), but I also highly recommend it. Great video guys!

I thought Joss Whedon and Guillermo del Toro were gonna be involved in the movie
Gabriel Colon if that's true those are still exciting choices.
Waleed Khan True
+Waleed Khan rumour going round of ready player two being written, watching to see if get anything new comes up hopefully with a release date for it
I banged my head to the wall so hard after reading this book. Because I threw away my N64 and PS1 when I moved home a couple of years ago...
dlysele :(
Thanks you guys for recommending this book. I just moments ago finished the book, and it was amazing. Probably my favourite book now (taking first place from The Hobbit.) Wow it was so great.
this channel makes me happy, I could watch you guys review anything
I love how serious robman looks when he lifts up to show off the book cover near the very beginning of the video.. lmao "some serius shit going down"
I was having a rough week and decided to download this book hearing Wil Wheaton was reading it and I have to say it has really hit me in alll the right ways. Rob, you make anything you talk about sound like the best thing ever! i love how enthusiastic you are! :D
This book is amazing! i listened to the whole Audio book in two days. Thank you guys so much for the recommendation! Big fan of your work and every one of your reviews.
Just wanted to thank you guys for turning me in to this book! About halfway through, so far its masterpiece material!
Decided to check this one out based on your recommendation. AWESOME BOOK! Thank you guys! the beginning of the book was good but i thought after the first gate it started to go down hill. also i really didn't care for the love interest
Thanks for suggesting this. Such an awsome listen through. I got the audio book and listened to it like crazy. Being born in the 90s didnt experience much other 80s media besides video games so it was awsome to learn more about the 80s got me super interested. Thanks!

Stumbled upon this gem of a book by accident while working in the library one day. It was such a fun and incredible ride, I highly recommend it :D

Listened to the book in 2 days straight, 8 hours each. Loved it! Thanks Johnny and metaljesus for the recommendation!
Cool review guys, will definitely check out the book, but yes it does sound similar to William Gibson's Neuromancer - at the very least in the setting.
Read it last week. Incredible. Thank you Johnny for showing me this great piece of fiction.
I watched this review last night, watching your videos in the playlist..backwards, yeah, but anyway I went to WH Smith at 9am today, searched high and low for this book and they had just one copy left! I love your reviews working on my own hope I can one day become as big as you! :D
I finished reading it yesterday after watching this video and it really is incredible. I was so hooked. I haven't read a book in nearly 10 years and I doubt I will read another for a while but it was so worth it. Incredible.
Yayyy for the Mechagodzilla & Gundam RX 78-2 cameo! Great review guys, sounds like a really interesting read.
I'm still struggling to put the experience into words, though I'm planning on putting up a review once I can properly compose myself.
Sounds like something I would enjoy, also, I love the Big Trouble in Little China shirt Johnny!
Yeah dude, you'll love it regardless of when you were born. Many of the references are to old '80s games, arcade to DnD. If you're into nerdy stuff, it's right up your alley.
Wow, what a cool premise for a story.
If Gamester tries to listen to the audiobook it will probably be busy reading itself to someone else.
Wow the idea of 'stacks' is actually pretty unique. I might steal that idea.
This sounds like a really awesome book. How much does the book or podcast cost?
Seriously, I guess I've been holding out not checking this book out when it was first recommended to me. I really liked this review though:) I'm equally interested to hear this book reviewed on this great literary radio show I try to follow called TheBook Report. All kids who grew up in the 80's were privileged to be part of the wonderful beginning of great video games, among many other cultural changing moments. I for one will be checking out this book! Thanks guys!

I was born in the mid 80's & I have just started to read this book, though I'm only on chapter 1 (level 1 in the book)
I absolutely love this book. Best book I have ever read. I recommend it all the time to people.
thanks for the heads up . i will pick this book up now thanks to you
...the audio book (i know it sounds weird but...) painted a picture in my mind so perfectly it was almost lime watching a movie...highly recommond this book as well and i will be at the midnight release of this movie when it hits theaters ...MODERN DAY CLASSIC!!!
Nice something to watch during halftime of the Heat and Lakers game.
Today i finished this book. Best story ever. I hope that warner brothers will creat a good movie. Greetings from Germany
This book is great. Filled with so many pop culture references!
It looks like this book is getting a lot of great review at the amazon website. I will have to check this one out. Also if the movie studio can do the book justice then I think a movie for it could be really amazing.
yay go 80s pop culture!
I got the audiobook. What an amazing novel for retro gamers!
I loved the book. I was not aware that there is audio version of the book so I plan to get the audio version soon.
Speaking of 80's references, Johnny has always kind of reminded me of Coery Haim.
Its awesome, I didn't grow up in the 80's but I even picked up the references. What a great book!
After watching your review I managed to get my hands on the book, 2 days and i'm almost at the end, It's so freaking AWESOME.
Mecha-gozilla vs Ultraman? MY DREAM COME TRUE!
Thank guys for making me discover this really great book.
Something a bit different there, that's nice, you got me hooked here I need to read that.

thanks so much for the clue.. also stoked to read a book that you guys are reading too.. thanks!
Watched this video like one week ago ordered the book and it came today and thanks for the tip you got any more?!?! :)
