    I always envied the famicom for having a better overall look, they have an actual logo lol, the fact the controller looks a bit nicer too and coincides with the logo too.
    Wish we would have gotten quite a few of the japanese exclusives too, thankfully translated roms online have fixed that and reproduction carts too lol

      Yeah, that is why the whole Super Nintendo vs Super Famicom title confused the hell out of me at first.. like what the hell... But the NTSC version SNES have many legendary games that are not available for the PAL version SNES (like Earthbound and Super Mario RPG) so even though the console is ugly the games are what are more important. (There is also some games that are only available in PAL region but those are not usually very good games). PAL games also had 50 Hz instead of 60 Hz and that usually made games run slower even though the graphics in some games looked much better in the PAL region.

    I saved up all summer and bought the Super Famicom with Super Mario and F-Zero on launch day when I was 14. When the US Snes came out I had to uncase the cartridges to play them on it. Thankfully the Game Shark came out not long after which worked nicely as a cartridge adapter lol.

    All I thought about when I saw the buttons was the candy Smarties; I am so glad I am not the only one, lol. The non-US console design def. had the right idea. Also, my first exp. in playing started with an aunt who rented the console and three games... for several months! The store finally just called and asked her to bring it in with a greatly reduced fee. I didn't get to play the SNES again for over a year. Great memories, guys!

    We got the proper design, and colours in Europe. Strange how they change things for the US. The Genesis is called the Mega Drive here, just like in Japan.

    • @maxamundsen
      @maxamundsen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally I think the super famicom looks more like an office appliance than it does a game console, but as for the Mega Drive, the only reason it was called the Genesis is because of a copyright from another company. Sega would have been sued if they kept the name.

    Great episode! I love the super famicom design over the wester design. I remember the christmas snes launched in 1991, the mall had an eb games mini store with a kiosk of super mario world which was playable for about 20 minutes. the line of people was WRAPPED around half the mall all day everyday!! I've never seen new console kiosk excitement like that since.

    Great video guys, I've still got very fond memories of getting a SNES for Christmas back in the early 90s. I got the Control Set with Final Fight, Super Mario Kart, Street Fighter II and a Asciiware SNES Advantage, good times. I agree that the Japanese SFC looked a lot nicer than the SNES. Not sure why they decided to go with a different case and purple buttons but at least it still played the same.

  • @vlcheish

    I'm glad you brought this up. It's such a small footnote in history but the SNES design always bugged the hell out of me as the previews in magazines in 1989 were showing the beautiful Super Famicom. Even the multicolor logo was this awesome touch as it artistically made sense because the SNES was such a colorful system at the time. SNES reminded me of the Master System on steroids. Lance Barr who designed the case clarified that "The Super Famicom was maybe okay for the market in Japan. For the US, I felt that it was too soft and had no edge. We were always looking at future modular components (even the NES had a connector on the bottom), so you had to design with the idea of stacking on top of other components. I though the Super Famicom didn't look good when stacked and even by itself, had a kind of "bag of bread" look."
    Ended up still being a very poor aesthetic choice. It also doesn't explain the bland muted colors. No offense to Lance but I trust Japanese designers over American ones 9 times out of 10 when it comes to these type of things. For example has anyone ever compared the artwork from the Japanese boxes to American ones? American ones are terrible across the board.

The new systems today ps3, ps4, xbox 1 amazing graphics but a little to real and could encourage anger or even killing, hard to distinguish reality from fantasy for many. I will always defend the NA SNES Design I love it! I love the purple Gray color scheme and the concave convex buttons. I prefer its look. I never remember people saying it was ugly back in 1991. I think that was a later thing when the internet came along and people saw the Super Famicom. It became cool to hate the design of the NA SNES. Not me I adore that purple gray design. I still love your look SNES

  • @goldleader3028
    @goldleader3028 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I agree that the Super Famicom is the better looking console. It's sleeker and more elegant. But the design of the NA Super Nintendo is not horrible. I think just one small change to it would improve it quite a bit in the looks department...Change the color of the power and reset switches. I don't know why they went with purple, but it gives the SNES a very toy-like look. Change the switch color to red, black, or even dark grey, and it would look more serious. there is another video of an SNES that a guy painted gloss black and red that looks sexy as heck. Granted, Nintendo probably didn't want to color the SNES in black since its main competitor the Genesis was black, but hey what can you do?

    • @cakestalker
      @cakestalker 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The design change for the U.S was completely unnecessary and really mind-boggling. Why? Really just why? They kept the design of the Super Famicom here in Europe for the PAL SNES and I always thought it looked really nice.. and only years later did I actually see the U.S design for the first time. I was not even aware that there was a Super Nintendo that was not round without the multi-colored candy buttons, but instead blocky with purple buttons :O

    • @christopherb27
      @christopherb27 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Purple always was a go to color Japanese companies use to make their products look sleek at the shows. Back during the Sega-Snes console war when Sony was first revealing the PSX it was entirely purple including the controller. Which we all thought made it look a look completed and closer to a true release date than what Nintendo, and other companies had been promising us and constantly changing release dates. I remember the frustration of "Project Reality" then "Ultra 64" and finally Nintendo releasing the thing.

      its actually not the same speed. it's a little faster in PAL for some games (super mario world) but still in 25FPS and most of the time they are slower. Sonic runs like turtle and it's unplayable by Japanese/American standards.

    • @mattharris4805
      @mattharris4805 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah PAL may of had a slower refresh rate, but the resolution of PAL screens was far superior to NTSC. When we see old American tv recordings over here it looks like someone put vaseline on the camera lens...

    • @rerolledDK
      @rerolledDK 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Matt Harris In the console games the 8 & 16 bit era, PAL's extra lines of resolution just ended up as black bars above and below a squished picture that was meant for NTSC.

My friends dad worked alot it the US and he brought home a US super Nintendo , and me and my frined thought it was some kind of cheap knockoff from China or something. some 3rd party ugly thing that played SNES games. didnt help we had to use a converter cartridge to play our games. You need your eyes rinsed. Besides ithat is not the super Famicon, that's the Pal Snes. The Pal Snes looks so much better, it looks modern even today. The american snes looks like a gray and purple brick. It's like comparing champange to carbonated piss.

    • @ZombifiedDuder
      @ZombifiedDuder 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I agree with LoDDEMOCIDE, the American SNES had such an iconic design.
      The Super Famicom has a cooler looking controller, and the logo is better, but the console itself just seems so... boring and standard to me. Plain grey-on-grey colors, and a curved design that seems reminiscent of the Genesis/Mega Drive. It just seems so utilitarian to me, like a tape player, while the American SNES looks like a proper video game console.
      I will say, though... I prefer the way the SFC carts looked, despite the lack of any end labels.

    • @MrGencyExit64
      @MrGencyExit64 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ZombifiedDuder I don't know, I think the boxy design of the american SNES looks about as ridiculous as the SuperGrafx. In many ways the two things look very similar (nevermind the difference in color). I like the simple design on the Super Famicom, it looks like something you'd play games on, rather than a weapon.

    The PAL consoles look like the famicom which is what I have and it was the controller that made me fall in love with it along with super mario brothers. I went to my friend's house for a sleep over and we played it (this was in something like 2002) and I fell in love instantly! That diamond layout for the 4 face buttons (where the distance between the left-most and right-most buttons is greater than the distance between the top-most and bottom-most buttons) on the SNES controller was amazing. Wish they'd go back to that design.

    Funny I liked the U.S. Grey purple machine, we got the super famicom body over here in Australia so I bought a U.S. Import snes just coz I thought it looked cool - and if you broke these little tabs inside the cartridge bay you could play super famicom games without an adapter - talk about being versatile - oh my gawd you got a purple Super Nintendo - that is soooo cool - my friends would say !! Yep I sure did

    I was probably too young to have any real release memories (born in 1990) but I have had a lot of memories with my SNES back when I was 5. The very first game I ever got my hands on at home was Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. I played the crap out of that game.
    I also lived right across Willows Videos at the time and that's when we rented the N64 when it first came out and I was blown away, I mean I was like 7 at the time. In fact that Willows Videos is still there today. I still go there

    I think we got a box with big buttons because it was geared towards kids. So it has that simple fisher price look to it. Where in Japan they got a sleek futuristic looking system because most of the country plays Video Games and they see it as a serious piece of hardware.

    I honestly didnt know before today that that blocky thing is the same as what we Europeans knew as the SNES. Granted we had to wait till 1992, but still... classic sleek console. The North merican SNES reminds me of how a car company stuck some brutal panels and overexaggerated body parts on an old GMC bus and called it Hummer H2, knowing it would appeal to the US market...

  • @TheBladeJunker
    @TheBladeJunker 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the ripples on the bottom of the US model but the sleek lines all over the Super Famicom are definitely nicer plus those awesome colored buttons. Its funny since inside the controller is raised letters with each hole labeled with the Super Famicom colors. Great system, haven't been excited about a Nintendo console since then.

    Johnny, regarding the piece of tape on your SNES controller ~12 inches up from where it connects, i believe you originally had taped up the frayed wires at the base and the tape slide down (probably scotch tape which its adhesive can dry up quickly)
    So it doesn't look like it was cut then taped up (that's what i think you guys were thinking while filming) I'm such a nerd for writing this O_o, but i love this review, keep em' coming!

    My first exposure to super famicom was via a news piece from CNN tech reporting from CES with Miles Obrien. I knew that it would be repeated in the day so I sat there with my VCR recording to make sure I could catch it. I did and re-Ted clips of super Mario works and f-zero over and over again. I'm with you rob-man. The early days of super famicom are like religious lore and I will never forget living that moment.

    I know I'm late to the party, but just bought a Super Famicom out of the blue because it's the system that my best friend and I saw in Nintendo Power and wanted. We talked about it forever, and he got the Super Nintendo (we are in the US) a year later. My parents thought video games were a waste of $$, so no system for me... but I could always go over his house and play it. Years later, I just decided to see what they are going for, and ended up buying one. I'm excited. Makes me want to start collecting video games again.

    I'm glad we got the Super Famicom design in Europe, though we were permanently gimped with PAL and 1 to 2 year late releases. I am really attuned to the speed of games and music and every time I play american versions of games I loved back in the day it's weird hearing the music faster. I think the biggest difference is in NES Super Mario Bros.

      Oh yea we did. I saw a US Snes in friend's house once and asked him what a fuck is that, why it says Super Nintendo on it? And he said it's American Super Nintendo that his dad bring to him from US. I was like, thank god our version doesn't look ugly piece of shit like that. We had original design with Super Nintendo text on it. But everything else gaming related back then, we got screwed over and over, and some ways still do.

      ***** all of our games right up to and including PS2 were 17% slower and had horrible black borders

    • @beatchef
      @beatchef 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** because PAL has a higher clock frequency and more lines than NTSC but all the games were made for NTSC, they had to be 'slowed' to compensate for the clock difference and borders put on to compensate for less lines. The only times we had a better version of games instead of much worse was on British games like Wipeout and on certain games on the sweet sweet Dreamcast that were 'Pal 60hz'.

    I don`t know I kinda like the SNES design better. Could be that it`s connected to fond memories, but I also just feel like the color scheme is balanced better, and I just really like how the power and reset buttons just slide right along that ridge on the top of it.

    it was redesigned because people in japan were balancing drinks on the flat cartridge slot so o the USA version had a rounded bit there.

  • @carrotroot
    @carrotroot 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    NOA changed the shape to prevent people from putting liquid containers on top of the console. This is why cartridge slot on the North American console was slight rounded. Furthermore, NOA still had a lingering perception that US gamers wouldn't buy a system that looked like a "toy", hence the elimination of the curved corners and colorful logos, to a more boxy shape and mono-chrome color palette. The only positive change was the concave B & A buttons, but otherwise the JPN version looks better.

    I got the SNES for Christmas 1992. I was given the SNES, Super Mario World, Mario Paint, Street Fighter 2, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (abbreviating it cheapens the game) and the Super Scope 6 bundle. I love this system, hands down the greatest ever, I firmly believe people still follow Nintendo because of this. Also, we have the Playstation because of this. It was supposed to be an add-on for the SNES like the Sega CD was. This is quite possibly the best console ever.

    The pulled out first control the one guy talked about was a design flaw in early controllers the clamp would break away. I had the same problem when I bought my first Snes I used inheritance from my grandmother to buy it. I called Nintendo on it and they replaced it with fixed version. That first Snes was stolen.
    Now i play Snes games on my computer using Zsnes and ROM downloads.

    Speaking as someone from the UK, I agree 100%! In PAL territories we had the Super Fami design, which to my five year old mind was amazing; everything about it just emphasized 'fun', and it remains my favourite system design (along with the Mega Drive model 1) to this day.
    When I saw the US SNES design years later, I was all "...the hell did they do!? o_o"
