    What you are saying about cost of living in California. My daughter and son in law live in the Bay Area. Both have PhD from Stanford and hold good jobs, they can’t afford to buy a house. Currently they are renting a very small house in Redwood City, for $4,500.00 per month. Glad you are letting others know the truth.

    Starting salary of $150 k for assistant professor at a small university in rural Ohio--- that sounds like an incredible package !...i have many friends who joined as assistant professor at better known universities and their starting salaries are much lower in the range of $60k-115 k which is consistent with glassdoor national averages.

    I used to be a regular of Harnoor Singh's videos, but I have been lately watching your videos. Sir, you've explained very nicely so that students can make informed decisions before selecting a particular university in a particular state. You've shown the reality which no other TH-camr shows with the comparison and all. Thanks for doing it. Hope to see you bring in more informative videos. Can you make a video on l1a and l1b visa? Thank you.

    Even if you make 150k in Bay area which is about 7k per month, it's ok. You can stay in a lavish apt. with a friend in a 2bhk with $1500 per person in Santa Clara. You can finance/lease a model 3 for about 800. Food take max 1k. You would still have about 4k savings. Money is an important factor but lifestyle, nightlife, roads, weather, travelling and outdoor activities is pretty good in Cali. This is a real life example. Saying 150k being not enough in Bay area is not exactly true.

    Regardless of overall cost of living, the absolute amount one saves is way higher in a 150k+ job in Cali/NY vs 80k in Atl

      No, actually, if you see the poverty line foe bay area, it is...get ready for it... $120,000. So you probably dont wanna live on poverty line or even double the poverty line, right? It should be 4 or 5 times higher than poverty line for a good lifestyle, so you save more in dallas.

    • @SHAMWOW388
      @SHAMWOW388 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      absolutely agreed by $ amount. Maybe not so in % but possible still. However what happens at the end of the day is , whatever you saved thats only worth where you are living. Did you save $100K (1 year of expenses in dallas) if you save $30K thats one year of living expenses in atl. SO i would say in a ratio if you are not planning to move after saving then you might save more but it might be same or lower in proportion to your cost of living.

    FYI, apple ka headquarters Palo Alto mein nahin Cupertino pei hyan...also this cost of living calculator comparison is a bogus yardstick to compare salaries/style of living. If you maintain a conservative lifestyle in cupertino and make a salary of 250-300k/year at suppose FB, you can save 100-150k/year; much more that you can actually make in georgia/ohio/texas. And if you invest that savings wisely, the compounded effect of that investment is way more than that you can possibly make in any other part of the US. No wonder California has the highest no of multi-millionaires in the whole world...

    Sir,
    I have a few friends who work at Google- from what I understand is that $250,000 (1.7 crore) is not always per annum
    This includes several components - ( One time joining bonus + Stock options held over 5 to 10 years) and these are not paid every year.
    Could you please shed some light on these aspects as well and please do correct me if I am wrong.

    • @thebroadcastTV7
      @thebroadcastTV7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stock options are split over 5 years. Signing bonus is one time either paid upon joining (most), paid half when you sign and half when you join (fb), paid over 2 years of working(amazon) ranges from 10-100k.
      Rsu grants are usually 30-200k. Distributed over 4 years usually evenly. So total comp first year is high then second year is lesser because no signing bonus. When people talk about total comp they usually are excluding signing bonus. Indian media includes it.

    I agree with all your points. Having lived in Atlanta as well as the Bay area, I would any time choose the Bay area above ATL. I think when you are starting your career, it is important to choose the type of work you are getting over the money. Once you are in the land of opportunities, with experience money will always come by. Indians are generally hardworking and most of them understand the importance of savings. One saves enough which they won't be able to spend also. Moving to the Bay area in your early years is always easier rather than making the transition at the later stage of life. When you are a fresher, you are motivated. The Bay area gives you so many opportunities to thrive. I agree it is a bit expensive but totally worth it.

    While base salary comparisons might be true, there are huge advantages of the bay. In tech companies you mentioned a large component is equity in the company. The second major component is opportunity cost. There are way too many companies in the bay per sq ft than any other place on earth :)
    If you want to leverage location arbitrage then earn in the bay and then moving on later to an inexpensive place might also make sense.

    Lots of valid points but a couple of things to clarify about living in CA:
    - not everyone has a 2 hr commute (in fact most people don’t)
    - home prices weren’t as inflated 10 years ago so if you’d moved here then, homes were still quite affordable (pricier than most of America but affordable nonetheless)
    - grocery prices are on par with the rest of the country (CA is primarily an agricultural economy)
    - if you’re working in tech, you can easily job hop without uprooting yourself and your family to a new town
    - Apple’s HQ is in Cupertino and not Palo Alto 😊

    • @Randomguy-bk8pb
      @Randomguy-bk8pb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Valid points. I know I can’t buy a house in bay are any sooner. But still couldn’t think about moving out of Bay Area by looking at the opportunities. most importantly I feel I get indian life in American standards here. I lived in Atlanta too. Can’t even compare the quality of life in Atlanta and Cupertino. I lived in Boston as well, where I had to change my life style completely, over the time i got used to it and happy too, but yeah , life in Bay Area for an Indian family is something else.

    This is a one sided story. Housing is really expensive but 200k in bay area can still buy you a lot and no it does not take you 12-15 years to save up 1 year worth of expenses.

    • @DesiAmericanProfessor
      @DesiAmericanProfessor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the same 200k outside of the bay area, can you a lot lot more. You must also take in to account inflation. Bay area inflation is higher than the national average. So each year your living expenses go higher. In fact, I was being conservative when I said 12-15 years.

    • @prat534
      @prat534 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Untrue. Atleast for software engineers, the amount of opportunities Bay Area offers and the kind of income you make is great in Bay Area. Someone with 1-2 year experience can easily make 200k in bay area and for married couple who mostly buy homes that is a 400k Income which definitely rises exponentially with time. A million $ house on 20% down payment would be around 5k mortgage so including other expenses if you have 12k/month expense and the couple would make 23k/month after tax. So no it does not take 12-15 years to save up an years worth of Emergency funds.

    Salaries are given according to location. Nobody gets 150k in Texas with few years of experience where as it is common or standard for a new grad with 0 experience to get 150 k in bay area. At the end it comes to how much you are saving and at the max it comes to 500-1000$ difference in paycheck for month in LCOL area but this difference is compensated in HCOL area with good weather and opportunities. For Americans/PR above argument may be true because they need a home to stay whereas those who are on visa they can rent a place and no need to buy 1M$+ houses in HCOL areas

    Not accurate data. I have lived in different parts of USA and now in bay area. Bay area is expensive because everyone wants to be here for the opportunities it provides. The industry knows about the cost of living and they pay you accordingly based on your talent. If you got more salary offered in Ohio compared to bay area, that is because you didn't negotiate well. Also, bay area is not for academicians, but for engineers working in software and semiconductor companies, who gets paid well. Please give accurate information.

      Why are people misunderstanding the message. The title itself gives it away. Let me repeat it for you what this video is really about. When seen in the true context, the starting salary is just a hype.

    I wish i could give this guy 1000 likes. This is the only video of this guy i have ever watched and honestly he made the same points what i have discussed and argued with bunch of people. I felt like someone was just using my words. Glad to see a desi person not crazy for california nyo but is more practical and logical otherwise majority of people are just dying to go to california even though they live a crappy life there. I have been in USA for last 9 years now almost and have switched 4 jobs and 4 states and every time i look for job change i have a list of places where i do not apply that includes california, newyork, Florida, boston, CT. Even though if i get an offer from these places i say no unless someone will offer me 3 times than what i can get in other states :) Really glad to see this video sir, atleast someone is talking sensible and sharing correct information rather than just misguiding others. God bless you.

    I guess being a professor you don’t have things like RSU and ESPP which are main mode savings. You did tell you will save 100k in 3 years right! Just check with an engineer in SFO how much RSU they get for 3 years (250k approx for starter)

    • @DesiAmericanProfessor
      @DesiAmericanProfessor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yes, you are right. But please notice that the 100k I mentioned one could save was just on rent alone. Everything else is dirt cheap in midwest too. People are misinterpreting the video. The video was about Indian media giving wrong ideas to people about 1.5 cr starting salaries and I was trying to debug this misconception. This was not about bay area vs midwest.

    The video tag line should have been , salaries comparison and livin in USA , not about the IIT,s . IITs are most prestigious institutions in India which offer world class education to our Indians at lowest. If I mean world Class - alumni base in all the FAANG companies nd also in research ! U didn't expose the reality, typically u could have just said that 1.5cr converted into dollars is average salary here in usa ! But wht u should know is for a graduate jst after btech in india, this is something which is to admired and encouraged !

    • @DesiAmericanProfessor
      @DesiAmericanProfessor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My goal was not to go after IITs actually. It was to debug the Indian media which exaggerates and wrongly influences people. I started my video with a mention of media.

    Found the “facts and numbers” to be misleading.
    You’re missing out on the opportunity cost of coming to Bay Area where your equity and stock options might make you a millionaire over night.
    Another thing that was misleading was the parking cost anecdote. If you are working in Santa Clara you don’t go to park your car in San Francisco (since SF is more than 40 miles away from Santa Clara). Parking would probably be free since there is ample space for malls, shopping complexes and other businesses. Also no city in Bay Area has a downtown for weekend partying or shopping that anyone is going to spend on parking.

    • @deepshah3411

      Also you guys are comparing starting salaries here. This is the point in life when no one goes out to buy a home or has a family support (in most cases).
      By the time comes for child education, the family as a whole would be earning a lot more.
