Do you think it's worth doing PhD in theoretical physics like string theory from abroad? I am financially unable to spend even 50k but luckily I am pursuing MSc Physics in IIT Guwahati so IIT can provide loan for abroad admission and selection and all that. Please suggest me to make decisions because there are very few (I don't any yet) who go for PhD abroad in theoretical physics, most of them go for applied physics like condensed matter physics, quantum computing,...
Mam I am 36 and trying to apply for PhD. it is not a big deal. Just make your own journey. It is all about your own journey, circumstances and motivation.
Got my PhD at 26 and got a 500k TC at a big tech with my EB1B green card at 29. Your achievements are good but your attitude is horrible. No one cares about your stupid PhD and your money. You are literally the same as other H1b people.
Hey, I am from IIT Madras and will be joining Johns Hopkins this Fall as a PhD candidate in Systems Engineering. It would be nice to connect with you. Can I have your email or LinkedIn? Thanks.
I started my PhD at 30 instead of getting married and having kids like most Indian women, and after more than 7 years will defend finally this semester. PhD’s are the source of research and new ideas and future generations of professors who can teach. Governments know the importance of PhD’s and love them. Note the eb1a green card in USA. Finally, PhD is the best place to hide during a recession and many professors get good students during this period

@@sbnerji12555 obviously you can do. But getting into Top phd programs requires min. 1/2 research papers in top journals and top LORs. So, maybe try getting into a decent MS program so you can start with your research then apply to top phd programs.
PhD for sure is about being passionate about research and discovering within the scope one has in the subject he chooses. And PhD is not just about research or publishing work. Its a journey of evolution where you refine your thought process and critical learning and you even learn a lot from the mentorship. These skills are not applied just to your field after your PhD but to everything else you come across in your life afterwards. PhDs can tread anything in their life with the skills they gain during the enduring journey of PhD. One simple one line answer to this guy Harnoor is that: There's zameen asmaan farak in people who are passionate and determined to research and want to get a PhD versus those who do PhD because they are not getting H1 during their OPT or who didn't find a job after their MS. It is definitely a nightmare for the latter.
Even a masters is not required for you to gain the skills to work in a tech sector. Kids who are citizens just do a bachelors and earn as much as you do after a masters. If people got STEM OPT after an Indian bachelors, do you think a single person will do their masters to acquire "skills"? Harnoor seems to be all about money money and savings savings.
Most people who do PhD in US often don't work in the field they do PhD. Unless you do a a job in a field directly related to your field of PhD you will not be considered for the GC as a person with PhD for shortening your GC que. Plus the fact is most people are not fit to do PhD even if you do get into some PhD program.
I have done my bachelor's in electrical engineering, can I do master's in aerospace / astronautics and a PhD in space science? I'm super passionate about aerospace and dream of working at NASA. Harnoor has all the wrong ideas as to why one works towards a PhD. His whole focus is on making money which may not be everybody's goal in life.I am surprised he even has a masters degree. I am not sure why he even went to high school when he could have easily gotten a job without even going to high school. The reason for obtaining a PhD is for the pure joy of discovering something new and for the sheer pursuit of knowledge. His views are completely screwed up and not conducive towards excellence in anything. Sad!
This comment tells me you have NO actual experience of doing a PhD in US. Depression, mental health issues and loneliness are the norm with PhD candidates here. Just because you once had a burning passion and aptitude for research DOES NOT necessarily mean it'll stay invariant like that forever. That's not how human behaviors/preferences work. People's interests evolve, mostly influenced by the environment they live in. And for a society where international students are not given the same freedom like domestic students, it absolutely takes a toll on their mental health and can directly affect their performance and interests. Don't argue on this. I teach at a university here in US, I'd know. I don't blame students taking shelter in a PhD program just to prolong their stay in US even if they aren't interested in any research. Its a consequence of a biased and broken immigration system. Trust me, most of them will drop them at the first job opportunity they get from Europe or UK.
Harnoor didnt know why companies laid off employees. Because all the major tech companies have started hiring PhD Engineers, as due to AI all workflow has been shifted to Research Phase.
In certain fields (for example, Biotechnology), a PhD is a must to move up the ladder. Masters may fetch you a job but it takes much longer for a non-PhD to become a team leader. Of course, if someone is satisfied with a base-level job, then obviously PhD would be a waste of time for that person.

Dude are you suggesting that every or majority of the masters students do PhD. There are limited number of Universities in US. The jobs are far and few in between. Retirement in US has no age limit. Professors typically work till mid 70 ties. This prof has very little experience living life he is all about working in state funded jobs . Most army people are not fit for corporate jobs. Their life experience has very little to offer to the corporate world. True there are some ex army people who are successful but by and large they are below average performers in corporate world. I'm saying this having known at least a dozen people from Military both in India as well as US.
The summary is that do what interests you.....there is always two sides of a coin....pros and cons are part of our life. Regret is the biggest punishment your life could give. You can't reverse time to correct your mistakes so think twice before taking your life route. Be ready to face all the obstacles that will come to you. Also one shouldn't talk about a topic which they have no experience at all.
One PHD student in the UK took 8 years to complete his 5 years PHD. He then started earning on basic salary from scratch. It is better to be employed for those 8 years where at least he could have purchase his own house on mortgage. There are many of my friends who started their job in UK right from day one and able to buy own house and car after 10 years rather wasting time on PHD. PHD are unpredictable if there are detains
And, what about the fact that PhD is free and for masters you literally have to keep your house on mortgage if you are from a middle class background? Sorry, it is not even a comparison. Even I am taking 8 years. So, what?
@@krishnakoliadhikary1110The so what is since you are not expected to provide for your family back in India and build a life abroad at the same time. Loans are affordable as long as you bag a job abroad at 22/23. If you hit mid 30s and still don't have a house, a car and a family all paid for which most men are measured against as a yardstick abroad, then it's alright to get a PhD and then a post doc well into your 50s. Nobody gives a shit. Not sure what this obsession with being a semi broke researcher is, specially coming a lower middle class background from a relatively poor country like India. The opportunity cost of a lost decade of employment is not something to scoff at specially when one comes from a middle class or lower class background from India.
I've always held back from pursuing PhD because I felt having the right research topic is really important. That curiosity towards your research will push you towards discoveries. But if you're doing it for the title alone, it may not be a good idea.
I always say to my family cousins- If you are going to US, go for PhD. Many people don't know the hidden benefits which student can have after completion of program other than job/experiences, if you caught my meaning..XD
PhD students do a lot internships at top places like Meta, Google Brain and Microsoft research every summer and earn just as much as anyone in the industry. They don't have the burden of a frickin loan on their heads. I mean just look at the number of masters students without a job in 2024 just working as some goddamn volunteer to prolong their OPT. PhDs by the time they graduate would have spent 2-3 summers at top research facilities and 99% of the time have a return offer.
Harnoor says PhD students compare their lifestyle with others who have done their masters and own a car. I mean they are still living with 3 people in a bay area apartment and the car might be leased lol. There are a shit ton of people who are millionaires at 21-22 toh kya masters waale unse compare karenge khud ko?
This always a thing with people who are money oriented, it’s not wrong after all money is very essential but people like harnoor make it seem that you do a job only to get money. Sometimes people want to do something they like, it’s more about passion for a particular field. I could have gotten a normal IT job last year but I didn’t want to do it because I wanted to study more and gain knowledge, maybe in future I would even love to teach if I gain the skills to do so. It’s something with us Indian students, majority of us just want to earn money in IT field even if it means to do engineering from an unrelated branch. The fact is that if Masters wasn’t necessary for getting a job in US then we Indians wouldn’t even think about doing it, there’s a reason why masters students are majorly international students who just want to start a career in US.
Problem with people like Harnoor singh is they start advertising about their opinion on youtube without having in proper position to judge others. He is just a normal developer doing a normal job.
You got very lucky - your area has a very good job market, you somehow got a good advisor, people of your age got greencards immediately with EB1 and am sure there's a lot of luck involved in getting a good research portfolio also I know some Math and Physics PhDs in the US who am sure worked very hard and are very talented, but are not even getting a basic industry job just because their area has hiring restrictions or their advisor was unhinged. My suggestion is both you and Harnoor should give advice starting with the disclaimer that many others who took the same path failed due to external factors
People think more degrees = more money and that is the myth which needs to be busted. I think we can safely say that for the large part, PHD makes you overqualified for the general job market, consumes a lot of time and there is a high probability you won't get your phd in the end. I know so many bright IIT grads who are either doing mediocre jobs post Phd or have given up.
In india, I went for interview for the post assistant professor & there were so many phd candidate freshers and experienced, old people in queue along with me (fresher i qualified Msc ,set ) ..... 198 candidate for just 4 post ... So looking at After math phd...it is not so different for academic job( just the knowledge level and experience differes) Academia can not give job for all the Phd candidates who passout... actually journy starts from there ... Need to aquire different skills .. according to new job, look for academic posn , different projects.. Financially...will have depends on stipend ( during phd )
It all depends on your interest and skills. One can earn a lot more money than a PhD if we have right skills and experience. Companies don't look for degrees they look for skills and how you can add value and make them money
@@DesiAmericanProfessor Can you suggest some solution to those MS graduates who get laid off due to recession in their 40s (in Cybersecurity) coz even if they get a new job then again there will be a chance to get laid off in next recession/layoff cycle ? Me who is a non stem student aspiring to a phd applicant💀. I wont even compare with a tech job person. Anyways why to compare? Also it's a very subjective topic and depends on the individual goals and carrers.
I think that Harnoor's opinion is very biased towards doing a job. Even in the field of computer science and AI, there's a lot of research that needs to be done. I think that Harnoor is thinking like a typical Web Developer that makes crappy websites and misguiding people with clickbaits without considering both sides equally. PhD is a wonder journey and you get to know yourself and the topic of study extremely well. I'd trade it all in to do it again :)
Academia aur Reaearch me jaana hai to Phd is Must and also for Industries Phd waalon ka Industrial knowledge bhi bohot top level ka hota hai, Academia me while pursuing Phd stipend money plus you can work as an Assistant Professor or do some extra teachings in your branch to earn more, so there is definitely a lot of money can be earned while pursuing Phd if you want to but if you wanna be more focused towards your research so that stipend money is enough also. Haan agar aapka India me koi educational background nahi hai ya achha Academic Profile nahi hai to you can work just after doing your MS in USA but for a person with a great academic profile who has received scholarship and his Phd is being fully funded with stipend being provided then definitely nothing is better than Phd, ye aapka academic aur industrial dono parts ko boost karega and its the highest academic degree , a big milestone.

Sir I want to do a PhD. I did my MS and worked for the OPT time for 3 years and now in India. The only thing that prevents me from going for a PhD is because of my age in early 30s when I will start my PhD. What would be your opinion on this? Thank you for all you do!
You are a man. I am a woman (born in India, did not get married by choice) and I started my PhD at 30. Go for it if you are passionate about research! ✌️
i think harnoor's video was for those who wanna just work in tech companies and that's why they shouldn't go for ph.d .....so ph.d are for those who wanna do something big in their respective field and innovate something
Those who are studying in IISc or IISER they will mostly go for PhD only . Watching this video is a relief for the parents as most parents are worried about their wards' future prospects.
I know an army retired pediatrician she was on highest rank now after retirement she is doing PhD in education as she was an dr and educationist as well If someone wants to do it he will do it at any age Other things r just excuses
Prof Sambhara, I think Harnoor's video is for those who have no interest in research but want to live the life ar per the so-called tradition and rules of the Indian middle class society. They value their package and the benefits that it brings. They want to achieve quick success and don't have the patience needed for a PhD. I am not sure if they will understand much of your comments. However, your words hold much more value for those who are currently pursuing or want to pursue PhD and are dealing with the thoughts conveyed by Harnoor.
99% percent things I say is from my own knowledge and experience. Many youtubers collect information and just spit out whatever they found. So thank you for your kind comment. I appreciate it.

As we can understand @HarnoorSinghOfficial has a very narrow point of view about PhD. I like this video because the speaker in the video was very neutral and only focused on important points of pursuing PhD. Also by comparing videos we can understand how much broad mind set is of the person who has completed his PhD. Life is not about just earning money(Although money is important) and showing your luxury lifestyle, it is only good for the content sake. Harnoor has a huge fan base, I think he should make videos before doing a proper research but he cannot do that as he is against Research students. Everyone's life is not same and everyone's timelines differs, Enjoy your life and gain as much as knowledge as you can. Knowledge might not bring a ton of money but it will definitely give you a good way to live your life. I wish some youtube content creaters not only get aged but with it also start thinking with maturity. Awesome video once again.
Production is as important as invention. The covid vaccines were produced mostly by BPharm and MPharm holders. They were in larger quantities than PhDs. PhDs alone can't mass produce their invention.
As indians and pakistanis a phd promotes our image as a esteemed scholars and improves our country image which is a need not a want.surely nobody is forcing you to do anything do what suits you.
If you get a job in the field of Your research and your post matches your qualifications and requires a PhD. Not just based on your PhD or your job. Modi ne ram rajya banna diya hai kyun US janna chahte ho?
i would agree with Hanoor because whatever point he has made is somewhere true, not in all cases but most cases. because a PhD doesn't guarantee any success, so in the end, most of the students get over-aged and over-qualified. After spending so much time, they still struggle to find a good job, It is a new problem, so if anybody is financially independent and curious about the subject, then he/she should go for it.
Sir, I am almost 34 now and I still want to do PHD. I am pursuing my Computer science masters from Georgia Tech online masters program. I am married and have a kid as well. I would like to move into research and have enjoyed the US style education so far. I will have saved some money by the time I move to US for PHD so that i could support my family. I still want to do PHD, any thoughts on my goal? Also I am working as Associate architect at Ernst and Young in Bangalore. Also I agree with you, In my opinion, people should chase their goals instead of chasing after money when studying. I am from a very lower financial background and only son. I have struggled hard and had previously received lot of admits/scholarships from good US universities for MS but never could afford the i20.

Its as simple that all those who have a mindset to get into research aspects should anyway go with doing PHD. There is no need for Harnoor to say that PHD is waste and making contradictory statements. PHD is Phd no doubt.
That's exactly what harnoor is saying. People often look at PhD as just another degree to get job. Prof is naive why he doesn't talk about Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs etc.
One can not compare gaining knowledge with money earned during that period..Vidhya ko saraswati ko paiso me compare nahi kiya jata..if you have Passion you can go for a post doc too... Mostly international students at Abroad aim to earn dollars and easy life to enjoy.. Doctoral degree and money one can not compare..one may have satisfaction completing research it's a question of interest in study..

I am still confused should i come to us and do my masters . You suggestions will be very helpful. I also donot want to work on 3rd party payroll like from some Consultancy
Why you are going for master if you already working as developer. Most probably you will be looking for same job after master and also master degree focus on other things more than programming. You may write some code for assignment and dissertation project but it will be not on level required for most software developer projects which you are already working on. Better improve your coding skills try to become senior dev/ architect. Go for if you want to go in research or do phd. If you are looking for same kind of developer jobs than you will waste 2 years.
Man professors have target from higher education commission to publish a certain number of papers and those papers are researches of ms and phd students 😂 professors need phd students to survive

PhD’s are the source of research and new ideas and future generations of professors who can teach. Governments know the importance of PhD’s and love them. Note the eb1a green card in USA. Finally, PhD is the best place to hide during a recession and many professors get good students during this period
Not every PhD gets and retains their job in their related field. That is essential for being qualified for the Eb1a visa despite having a PhD.

Reading your Multiple comments looks like you really got pissed off 😂.

Completely agree with you, desi prof.!! Lately, harnoor is making a lot of clickbait videos.
Probably will earn more money using that.
In certain fields (for example, Biotechnology), a PhD is a must to move up the ladder. Masters may fetch you a job but it takes much longer for a non-PhD to become a team leader. Of course, if someone is satisfied with a base-level job, then obviously PhD would be a waste of time for that person.

Yes, Dr Sambhara is right. Many after getting into work get carried away and may not opt for PHD.
Phd in UK is 3 years. Max they will give you one more year. Master in UK is one year.

But, the market is flooded with phds already, it’s going to be the same as masters job market very soon.
It's only for computer science. See the halat of chemistry, physics phds. 😢😢
@@supratiksarkar6336 true that. No jobs for physics/chem students. Only some industrial jobs that also for some
@@vedika6260 my friend is physics phd and he earns decent via tutoring part time.
Best analogy ever. PhD is more like being in the army than expecting something superficial like ROI
Chal Bhai, tu Paisa ke liye kaam mat kar. Aur aadha salary le ke kaam karna. Aur passion bhi chahiye. Aur kabhi hike ke liye nahi bolega tu.
Problem with people like Harnoor singh is they start advertising about their opinion on youtube without having in proper position to judge others. He is just a normal developer doing a normal job.
You got very lucky - your area has a very good job market, you somehow got a good advisor, people of your age got greencards immediately with EB1 and am sure there's a lot of luck involved in getting a good research portfolio also
I know some Math and Physics PhDs in the US who am sure worked very hard and are very talented, but are not even getting a basic industry job just because their area has hiring restrictions or their advisor was unhinged.
Harnoor lacks deep value of Phd.
Thank you Chaitanya for clarity
In india, I went for interview for the post assistant professor & there were so many phd candidate freshers and experienced, old people in queue along with me (fresher i qualified Msc ,set ) .....
198 candidate for just 4 post ...
So looking at After math phd...it is not so different for academic job( just the knowledge level and experience differes)
Academia can not give job for all the Phd candidates who passout... actually journy starts from there ...
Professor I wanted to know if this statement is valid …. “PhD graduates are more immune to the tech layoffs compared to MS graduates”
Yes!
@@DesiAmericanProfessor Can you suggest some solution to those MS graduates who get laid off due to recession in their 40s (in Cybersecurity) coz even if they get a new job then again there will be a chance to get laid off in next recession/layoff cycle ? Coz Phd in 40's is impossible so what should they do then ?
Should they keep working on latest certifications and try to move forward ? Any suggestions ? How can they excel ?

Harnoor is also right, he just trying to show the fact
For some points i agree with harnoor. Accadamic toxicity is a real thing.

i would agree with Hanoor because whatever point he has made is somewhere true, not in all cases but most cases. because a PhD doesn't guarantee any success, so in the end, most of the students get over-aged and over-qualified. After spending so much time, they still struggle to find a good job, It is a new problem, so if anybody is financially independent and curious about the subject, then he/she should go for it.
