Very nicely explained Sir. After my 12th I failed in NEET and couldn't secured a medical seat, my family members, friends, neighbors everyone used to treat me like I'm not good in studies or unintellectual or I'm less than those who cleared, that time I didn't had motivation so I enrolled in BSc chemistry just because I didn't wanted to waste a year. I was in serious depression for 3 years thinking that I'm stupid and not talented only those who study medicine are geniuses and other kinds of self doubt. later I decided to do something and I gave law entrance after BSc graduation and cleared in first attempt so today I'm a lawyer. Whatever I studied in BSc Chemistry nothing was useful in real life but after becoming lawyer all those who laughed at me now call me for legal consultation and legal help.

This man is a real teacher. The way he speaks and explains, it makes me imagine how old sages, gurus in the past may have tought their shishyas, students and disciples. His words also remind me of Sandeep Manudhane sir from 'PT Education'. I hope India's youth & their parents begin to think beyond marks, scores, medical-engineering, IIT/IIM things. In the end only skills matter. Many multinational companies have started removing criteria for minimum formal education for job. This fact testifies his message. Good work professor.

I am glad I did not join IIT 20 years back. Instead, I chose the mediocre institute that had the best well-rounded faculty with Ph.D.'s from UK, Australia, and the USA. Since my 2nd year in progress, they pushed us to aim and achieve higher. they supported us during our GRE and admission procedure. Thanks to their foresightedness, I was able to receive full scholarship and admission in the top 50 research universities in the USA. Today I run my own company and look for new opportunities.

@@sukeshkohli475 man, just check the gdp per capita of USA i.e. $62,794 and that of India is around $2,009. That, clearly indicates US cost of living is too high and most of native of USA can afford their tuition fee. It's the cost of living that makes the education fee high as it's privatised in USA. It's not about money at all. It's all about skills and curriculum that Indian education system lacks, let's say we are studying the outdated syllabus which is around 15-30 years old and today's world doesn't work with this syllabus. Plus most of our professors here are useless, they know nothing about modern sciences and their core subjects. It's like we are so obsessed in cracking govt. jobs that no one is well qualified in their respective subjects. You can take example of china it's gdp per capita $9,777 still they are one of the bests in world for research and they have nearly same tution fee that india has. It's all about quality and skilled education which Indian system lacks by a very far margin. Short summary - we need to have quality professor with updated knowledge of modern world. Money is the second preference w.r.t education.

And that is why you see some upper middle class students don't even look at these exams, they just go ahead and persue their studies from top tier private college in india or abroad, and most of the time they end up succeeding, simply because they've used their potential in actually learning the useful stuff in college rather than preparing two years for a useless exam for 3 years, and because these exams are merit based so the BETTER will get selected.. rest suffer..
And same goes in Western countries, they just take that SAT which is rather an easy screening test..

I agree that the selection process to get into IITs is more or less base on elimination rather than creativity but we also need to look at the practicality right? There are so many number of applicants! I have done my B.Tech. In Chemical Sciences from IIT-G and I am currently pursuing Ph.D. in the field of Quantum Computing at Purdue. So I have gone through both admission phases and both of them have their own merits/demerits. But in general I do agree that the research environment at IITs is deteriorating. There are many reasons and most of them are administrative. Recently one the eminent faculty of IITG (Dr. B.K.Rai) was given a compulsory retirement. Why? Just because he was exposing corruption! Again most of the administrative appointments are political and that’s the reason why these people don’t have any kind of fear.

This hits so close to home. I all through out my childhood loved physics, loved observing things and asking why they were, the way they were. Since was a good student, every one told me to go for IIT coaching. I agreed because I thought it will be the same. But it was a complete rat race, I never got to enjoy even the physics part of it because there was no time to think, and the sole purpose of everything was to just solve questions and nothing else. My scores dropped and I started feeling very depressed.
I had to take admission in NIT Nagpur in a branch I am not interested in. (There are physics branches in some NITs but my parents didn't allow as they said it has no scope) Then there is a 75% rule so you have to attend classes even when you dont like both the teacher and the subject. And the exams are passed completely on the basis of rote learning and your handwriting. And you have to study very hard just for a decent pointer because everyone else is doing the same.I don't remember a single thing I studied.
Right now I am in final year and have finally made the decision and convinced my parents to let me go for M.Sc in pure Physics and am doing self preparation to clear the IIT JAM entrance exam. This exam too is based on "who completes the question the fastest", but I have put up with it once and this time the end result will be studying something that I love.
Sometimes I think, if I had given up on the IIT coaching, I would have let down a lot of people including my parents, but I would have saved myself from the self hate. I would have gone to a private college and would have had more time to do what I love and would have been way more happier.

I completely agree with you. But by what logic is having PCM compulsory? A person Who wants to study BSc Physics at IIT needs to use 2 years of his life also learning chemistry and that too at IIT JEE level and his chemistry marks will also decide whether he/she will be able study BSc physics or CS. So basically they are judging a fish by its ability to climb a tree. They can keep exam specific to the course you are choosing like SAT subject tests. It doesnt take that much money and effort and also useless uninteresting topics for the students will be eliminated.
Please note 22 million students take SAT that is more than 10 times the number of students who give IIT JEE exam. So I feel this can easily be done. Just needs some concrete efforts to be put in.

    Hello Sir,
EDIT : I understand the message you are trying to convey and I agree with the same. World is much larger than IITs and life gives many more interesting opportunities other than JEE.
    But :
Good / bad researchers & teachers are present everywhere!
Being IIT researchers , we face discrimination in journal reviews. We get intentionally delayed reviews. But the same research work, published from some EU institution, will get accepted very quickly.
Some profs of famous US universities act like medieval land loards . They have occupied the editorships of journals and they play dirty racial politics and nepotism openly. Some honest , lesser known US profs have exposed them but it seems to have no effect.
Meanwhile, we have seen top class PhDs ( like those from TAMU, U Minnesota ) applying for faculty membership at IITs and failing to answer undergrad level questions.
If you want to look at teaching skills, compare some EdX/ Coursea lectures with NPTEL ones. The depth of subject and thoroughness of presentation of some NPTEL courses are better.
I have been research student at iisc as well. Research environment at all engineering departments aren't so good as you might think of. IISc enginnering profs openly admit " teaching is an unavoidable job". In fact, they are inclined towards number of publications, no. of PhDs graduated etc. Many of them hardly teach a course once in two years . Again, overall performance of IISc is better than those of IIT s .
I know many structural mechanics PhDs from Stanford , CalTech and Michigan working for FB and Google in ML & AI. They have absolutely nothing to do with their thesis now.
It is pathetic to hear " Pythagoras theorem, Hyperbola / parabola etc taught at 11th, 12th std level are of no use". I wasnt expecting it.
I agree with other facts. I follow your pragmatic insights but this episode, unfortunately, was far below the high standards you had set for youself.
    Thank you

Prof what should be the syllabus of 11&12 class then acc to you? Pythagoras theorem has applications in vectors and without vectors the existence of physics is doubtful. Trigonometry and Calculus has no direct applications but you can’t graduate in engineering w/o these field of mathematics. 11&12th syllabus is not only related for Engineering but also for medicine and basic sciences. There are many things common in USA and Indian science syllabus so even US syllabus of high school is useless. IIT have demerits but they are the best you can get in India. Those non IITIANS you are mentioning are of earlier times when these clgs were comparable to IITs.

Even If 99% JEE failure students do know the concepts more than those 1% IITians but the thing is that they just know how to solve & apply it😂. That's it. Nothing else." He further asked, " Okay Do IIT Qualifiers have done some research work or Something different for which they can be called different, some new Facts, Some new Perceptions, some new Innovations. No, these people r just studying the same thing over the entire 2 years preparation & wanna boast for this shit!! 😂😂." Toh apne logic se keh do, IIT k Rattu tote students >>> Deemed MIT Professor. The main reason behind poor research at IITs is that the system does not allow innovative problem solving skills. For example, if you are working as a Ph.D. student under an IIT professor he/she will give you the problem that he/she thinks is important and you keep working on it and you don't care the time, you just spend whatever time you like because you know that UGC will be paying your salary. In US, the graduate students are funded by research assistantships which come from the projects funded by NSF, DOD, etc. which have fixed durations. How many IIT professors actually know how to write a winning proposal? In US you have to compete for federal funds for tenure and promotion; in India you write your two-page proposal and if you know the right person at the right position you get the money. Mostly it is consulting money, not research money. You can't do real research in this environment. The Indian government should require the professors to write proposals and get funding from competitive sources and pay the Ph.D. students from graduate research assistant positions instead of UGC money.

"IITs are not perfect. IIT research has a long way to be world-class. It's hyped in India. it's not the end of the world. Continuous hard work is the only Master Key for success."
I believe the major objective of your video is to highlight above. However, I think it became a bit more titled towards bashing IITs (don't know if it is because bashing IITs is the best/only way to motivate people who couldn't get into IITs ).
Do Universities teaches you only a specific subject/area? If a person from Ocean Engineering can be successful in a high profile Bank job, Or if a person with Metallurgical Engineering from IIT can lead one of the top US tech company, does it mean IITs provides/promotes other interdisciplinary and behavioral skills that are in general in high demand across all the fields? The Video of the IITian you refer to in-between concludes that it's totally worth to be an IITian. Why not mention it in the video.
You are under no obligation to accept my following request, but I do believe you have a broader reach in students and your students deserve to get better-balanced views about this subject. "Is it possible for you to make a Video on why banks hire IITians irrespective of the branch, and for what kind of jobs? This narrative is popularized from 3 idiots, but it doesn't essentially give the full picture. Is it possible for you to also cover why so many IITians get M.S./Ph.D offers from world top universities with a full scholarship and do exceedingly well? And why so many successful startups in silicon valley are by IITians. What do IITs really offers"
    A proud & humble IITian

@@DesiAmericanProfessor First, really appreciate your response to my post (despite it being a bit critical). The follow-up video does cover some of my requests. Thanks for it.
I truly enjoyed every moment of my life in IIT (the people, the connections, the vibe, and the diverse set of opportunities). IITs are not a perfect system and the coaching mafia can make things even worst. However, most other universities also NOT a perfect system. As you mentioned, most IITians are from a middle-class background. They may not have the resources to directly pursue an education in the US/west. IITs probably are the best available education option in India for such people economically. IITs are definitely not the end of the world, and there are many other paths to success, but bashing IITs to prove this point never sounds the best approach and in some way undermines the hard work that people do to be IITians.
Anyway, I did watch many of your other videos and like those. You are doing an awesome job.

      Respected Professor
The points you bring out are truly motivating but not quite exhaustive. I understand that the purpose of the video is to provide motivation to students who could not perform well in JEE, but it somehow might serve as demotivation to future aspirants. It does feel to me that the video bashes IITs a lot. This video is really good to point out the cons that we IITians face as well in college, but I think like any topic in the world, it deserves another point of view. A video highlighting the pros of IITs would serve as amazing inspiration for students!
The truth is, however much cons that IITs or coaching institutes may have, most of the students that get into IITs are also not aware of their passions, which is why the branches and trades they choose initially are not indicative of their interests. The career they choose is. The reason why a lot of IITians choose to go into different trades than their majors is because of the amount of exposures IITs give. The student might not have been very mature while choosing his branch initially, but the exposure in those four years makes the difference.
Also, what IITs are most famous for is not the teaching style but the peer group which pushes one beyond their limits.
I mean this in utmost respect, and urge you to make a video highlighting the benefits of being from an IIT. This would be amazing inspiration for students!
From a proud and humble IITian

Everyone wants to become cs engineer in india but how do you know that you are good at cs. What do you think students are taught in cs, coding? No, coding is just a basic part of cs engineering, infact almost all branch students know how to code at least in iits or top nits. Even for a mechanical student it is necessary to learn coding because robots and machines are made by mech engineers so what do you who does the coding in robots or machines, the mech engineers themselves. Cs students are taught that what all processes take place inside the computer when you type a code. Now can you tell whether you have interest in it without studying it.

Go for a branch that you will enjoy learning and growing in. Do no blindly go after a university where you are forced to get a degree and spend your precious learning time in something that you are not even interested in. When getting married, marry because you like the girl. Not because her family is famous

I completely agree with everything you say about IIT but not with the research part. In IITs, a tiny fraction in the research community (MS/Ph.D.) is not up to mark, but most of them are really brilliant. That is also the case with some of the good state universities in the US, which I know personally.

It is not correct to generalise all faculties summarily as good and bad teachers have always been present during past be it IITs or universities. However, I agree with you that mist of the students in India do not have a clarity about their studentship and career.

He literally cleared that in the beginning of the video by saying nothing I say is universal and there would be some exceptions
So he did not 'generalise' anything 🤦

I appreciate your efforts here, to console the aspirants. However, your critics were against post grad fellows from IITs, not grads.
There is a BIG difference between the two. Let's face it, clearing JEE is not a child's play. One has to work hard AND smart to crack it. One cannot deny on the prowess of those who crack it.
I agree with your point, that a single exam cannot carve out your future.
However, one cannot doubt on the opportunities students from reputed institutions get. Others have to struggle much harder to accomplish similar feats

True. Jee advance is not at all about formulas. And history of scientists are well taught at school only.

What about the guy who got selected by Google? He's from a college you have not even heard of. IITs just provide a kick start and nothing else.
