TESLA vs GAS: TRUE Costs After 50k Miles
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 ต.ค. 2024
- I went over all of my costs from 50,000 miles of owning my 2022 Long Range Tesla Model 3. These costs include charging, maintenance, and insurance. I showed the data of how much I paid and versus how much I saved by driving a Tesla and by not driving a gas car.
Obviously, charging is cheaper than getting gas, but the amount of how much cheaper it is may surprise you. Insurance, at least with Tesla insurance, is also cheaper than what an average gas car pays for insurance. Also, the maintenance on my Tesla has been very minimal. I am still on my original tires.

What is it about a Tesla that makes you want to put so many miles on them? My wife's Model Y has 30k in 10 months. My Model Y has 10k in 4 months.
Haha! Road trips!
My model 3 has 11k miles in 6 months. I’ve done so many long road trips 😂 great car.
The fact that you know how cheap charging is. 😂
Interestingly, I was talking about tyres today. I've done 30k miles on original M3 tyres and still going strong . So much for Tesla is heavy on tyres
More EV is driven the lower the overall costs is
Very informative. My next car will be a Tesla. But I think it is important to include the depreciation cost. I don't understand why Teslas depreciate so much, considering they feel like new for do long. But it is important to present the facts.
Anyway, cool video. Good luck with the channel 👍
Good point. A big part of the depreciation is likely due to the cost of new Teslas coming down so much. When you can buy a new M3 Long Range for
@@opinionator3884 Exactly. You beat to it sir, prices for new models going down and tax credit is huge for a new buyer.
Also, batteries life shortening may be a concern for new customers, and we don't have data for 10+yo cars yet.
Mentioned already, but the reason for depreciation is cause of the new prices. Great for new buyers, not so much for current owners
They don’t depreciate that much. The previous year Tesla’s were simply overpriced and so the market adjusted.
A Model 3 in 2022 was like $55k out the door for a car that was worth $35k at best (based on comparable gas counterparts).
So you would have paid $20k of brand premium which has zero value given Tesla caters to the mass market rather than an exclusive club.
Glad to see your subs above 5K Fam! Let’s go to 10K!! 🎉
Thank you! ❤️
What’s crazier is if you compare the Maint costs to a gas car performance equivalent. Considering your Tesla performs like a high performance sports car.
I know, crazy
Be ready for that 700+ registration fee every year.
In Vegas. Insurance can actually help lower your rate if you go with the Tesla insurance if you really take the time to improve your driving score. I have full coverage for 100 bucks, where the minimum for the same coverage at other companies were $262
If you get the tax credit, a long range model 3 still comes out to be over 40k because of taxes. There’s also a Tesla registration fee.
If you want the long range base model 3 you should expect to pay 42-45k
Haha oh we know!
No biggie
I genuinely don’t understand peoples uproar about depreciation values, every car depreciates, some faster than others, but if you basically plan on keeping a car until the wheels fall off, that shouldn’t really matter. Isn’t the point of financing/owning a tesla is the longevity of it?
They only depreciate more cause the price of new ones have dropped so much. Not good for old owners, but great for new buyers. But people need a reason to bate
My 3 month old 2024 Model 3 Highland AWD has depreciated nearly $20,000 already. Tesla offered me $31,000 for it. I paid $50,000 for it 3 months ago.
I have a model y 2024 since march of this year. Only have 4,366 miles on it and so far zero bills except for the insurance around 140 a month.
This is the way
Do you not consider the amortization of the cost of the car? Cause the initial price is more significant that most gas powered cars.
Model 3 and Y are cheaper than the average sedan/SUV tofay
Thanks for sharing. I followed the exact prompt you used to ask ChatGPT for maintenance costs after 52 K, but I got only between $1200 and $1600. I even added Las Vegas, where you said you are, and got a bit higher range, $1500 and $2000, but still very low compared to your range.
Can’t explain that one lol idk
I always see comments about registration fees, I have a model Y and in Canada it’s $120 a year or $86 usd. Is registration in USA really as high as I have heard?
its like going to prison and dropping the soap, but everyday....i guess you just get used to it...sadly.
Paid almost $1000 for mine!
@@vegasteslafamily wow! That just blows my mind that it’s so much cheaper here.
If you paid that much why didn’t you mention it in the video….. oh because your channel is based on viewers, watching Tesla content…
Great job detailing the estimates for your costs.
Missing the biggest factor in depreciation.
Second biggest factor is what’s the car comparison?
A nice Toyota or Honda sedan is not going to cost almost 50K like dual motor model 3. It will also not lose 50% of the value by year 3 of ownership.
assuming $3.50 per gallon.
Newer Tesla’s don’t depreciate nearly as much! Old ones do only because the price of the newer ones has come down so much
Great write off of depreciation for businesses
Great video! What is your at home electricity rate plan for charging? Mine is .11 cents per kWh. We don’t have off peak hours option. Wondering if that would affect prices greatly or not.
Ours is 11 cents as well!
@@vegasteslafamily it would be nice for you to put that in the video, this way anyone in a part of the country where they scalp you for electricity can deduce how painful the cost will be to charge.
Your insurance says 12-15000 estimated mileage but youre closer to 20-25000 how is that?
This was our main road tripper until we got the Y
Think a Tesla is cheap to run? A Camry Hybrid might actually save you even more if you consider reliability, longevity and resale value.
Tesla’s reliability and longevity are unmatched!
@@vegasteslafamilymy 47k 2024 model 3 Awd LR might only be worth 25k next year
@@vegasteslafamilynah bro Camry and Honda are better in the longrun
This is the one comment I agree on. I came from a model y then trafed it in for a camry hybrid a year after. True cost of charging in CA is 44 mpg. A camry easily gets 50 mpg and has a range of 650 miles where tesla has a 290.
Dont get me wrong I am a tesla investor myself. When it comes to built quality tesla is above a camry by far. Theres just one thing I’m worried about a tesla and that is the battery degradation and resale when it drops to a certain point. And it is not cheap to replace one as of the moment
Biggest myth tesla not cheap also biggest myth Tesla is not a luxury vehicle
Righttttt!!! A Tesla sticker price in 2022 55,000 US dollar VS a Toyota Camry $25,000 US dollars that my friend = a saving of $30,000 US dollars so your way of seeing things is just LAUGHABLE!!!
2024 Model 3 Long Range 34k after credit and referral
And Toyota Camry with everything Tesla offer will be over $40,000 Tesla it's like a smart phone vs Camry which more like flip phone
Are you smoking meth? To get an equivalent RAV4 you’d need to spend at least 45-50k with dealer markups. A 2024 Tesla model 3, so the latest with all the tech and arguably higher cost compared to a 2022, is around $34k after the federal tax credit.
Besides the fact that the U.S. has been subsidizing oil companies and gasoline for more than a century, I’m more than happy to have them subsidize a better future with electric vehicles.
So you’re the one that’s laughable. 🤣
@@vegasteslafamilymeanwhile I’m out here either my used 2013 accord lx with an extra 30,000 for maintenance and repairs. Can’t beat buying a used reliable car if you find a good deal at the end of the day
My model Y is 4 months old since I Bought it and I put 20K miles already
Awesome! 💪
Your math seems to be a little off with the charging calculations. Maybe I missed how you were calculating, but full savings is $4,429 not $4,649
Hmm I gotta go check that
The general public just doesn't get it and I roll my eyes when I see neighbors buying their Hondas and Toyotas. I did a Return on Investment calculation of purchasing a Tesla Model 3 vs a regular car and it was/is a no brainer. I calculate $150 a month in savings. So it's about $7,350 savings for me over the lifetime of my car, so far. Smart people will understand.
I will add this. It saves money but the car is super, super FUN to drive if you want to let it roll on occasion. 90% of the cars out there are slow in comparison.
We buy Hondas and Toyotas cause we want to keep our cars forever
It’s amazing how many people just can’t comprehend.
Gas Car (brandnew): $40,000, Resell after two years: $35,000
Tesla (brandnew): $50,000 Resell after two years: $9.99
LMAO. if anyone buys a tesla for its potential resale value, they need to see a doctor. just drive the damn thing till its battery drops out the bottom, or it catches fire. lawlz.
Which Tesla? Model 3 new is 34k after tax credit and referral
The insurance is way off. Florida doesn't have Tesla insurance and I was quoted overa 1000 increase in my coverage
Tough luck bud. Tesla Insurance in California at least for my ‘24 Model 3 LR RWD was $130/mo
Sorry to hear that
I hope the Vegas heat won't destroy the battery.
It’s been good! Tons of Teslas out here
are you factoring in the 50-60% loss in resale value
No - new teslas today don’t have that
@@vegasteslafamily Isn't it misleading to say that new tesla models don't depreciate as much? Not enough time has passed to be able to confidently say that depreciation won't be an issue with newer models.
@@vegasteslafamily wrong all teslas have that even cyber trucks...
Have you ever had to take your car into the service center for issues? My Model 3 is less then a year old and I have an appointment to have them look at a knocking noise when I back up with the wheels turned. Tesla told me they charge $250 an hour for labor but not sure if that is waved since I'm in the warranty period. Do you know anything about this?
Fortunately we have not had any issues like that - sorry!
You can check with them to double confirm but it should be waived.
you need that aftermarket EV coverage, its like 4k for 6 years. if you have a 2021 or newer wouldnt tesla take care of that since its under warranty?
An update, I just met with Tesla service and they said it's covered under warranty so labor is covered. He also gave me a good tip, if you have seen issues in service mode they won't do anything unless it's on the main screen but just don't put on the service request that you looked at service mode and just report a likely symptom instead.
gas mpg would depend on the car though.
Cost difference = , but cost of time charging on road trip - priceless.
I agree! Can’t imagine standing at a gas pump doing all that!
@@vegasteslafamily BEV for around town and ICE for road trips. Charge at home. Fill up gas in a few minutes. Just saying worth it to me so I can actually reach my destination on time.
@@vegasteslafamily all my BEV only buddies just say “it is fine with planning”. They have their role and the tech / infrastructure is slowly getting there. They also now getting ICE for 2nd vehicles (for road trips or fun).
@@vegasteslafamilyoh, and renting a tesla annoying as I had to drive 30 min opposite direction to charge over 70% on day of return. Cost me 2 hours, but that is never part of the conversation. That is why out of spec has EV roadtrips. It adds to the adventure!
@@vegasteslafamily missed the point on that one
I think your insurance is off somewhat. There are too many factors to trust to an AI answer. I better test would be to run through one of the big insurers online quote systems for something like a tricked out Camry XSE using your zip code or address. Take my coverage from Progressive, on my 2020 MB GLC300 I pay $55 a month, on my 2023 MY I pay $91. I have been driving a long time and have never seen a disparity like this until I got the Tesla.
Yeah I didn’t know a better/simpler way to do it! Don’t wanna bore anyone talking about everything to do with insurance
Dang what coverage? I was pretty much paying $166 on my ICE car then switched to '24 M3P and it went to $133 from Progressive.
ever change bake pads?
You rarely need to due to regen braking, sometimes I check my wheels and barely any brake dust lol as to compare to my old ICE car w/ performance brakes. If you track your car then yeah you'll need to replace them or if you brake a lot but again once you master regen braking you can pretty much do one pedal driving.
@@Specialist7 i have a model y and i hardly press on the brake so just wondering whats the timeframe for due change 🤷🏻♂️
@@IvanTheRN Could probably go the life of the car depending how often it's used. They do have service intervals if the roads are salted during the winter so they may need to be cleaned and lubricated but outside of that I'd get them checked out but honestly they will last a while.
Already said but yes, you can go the life of the car without needing brake pads
@@vegasteslafamily thats sick
wait til you need to change the battery 😊
Video starts 5:29 🎉
No charging?
Then you missed all the info he gave about charging costs.
Buddy, just woke up and started making video. But pretty cool
What do you mean??
I asked chat gpt how much tesla owners Lost in total .Chat GPT replied we don't talking about it.
Well I mean crap gpt is a credible source
I think now that Tesla purchase prices have come down to comparable to ICE cars it's not that big of a factor. Maybe also look at how long the two types of cars lifetimes will last too
Nice!
2nd and I hate Arianna Grande 😂j/k
THIS is the comparison people want to know about when thinking of Tesla
Haha! Agree!
I still love my gas car.
To each their own!
Seems your algorithm has been putting you into Tesla/EVs 🤔
Good to see you are saving all that money because after another 50K miles and another $4,649 in savings you still gonna be about $6,000 dollars short of what is going to cost you to replace your EV battery. Is well documented that after 100k miles they start to burn 🔥 out. But hey NICE TRY 😂😂😂
Well documented where? My battery is on pace to last over a million miles
First and btw I love Ariana Grande
Did I include an Ariana grande reference unintentionally? Lol
For people who don’t know Buy one they are cheaper than you think. Bought my 2018 lr model 3 for 15k with 106k miles on it.. we do over 1000miles a week on a vehicle for work and errands.. and have put over 5k on it in a month.. hands down one of the best cars I have had yet. The rav4 sport we used as a daily pulled 25mpg and this car was cheaper to buy than the rav initial cost .. plus it paid for the level 2 home charger in 3 weeks saving gas over driving our rav so
And no from my experience they are not “super expensive to insure”
Some people just don’t understand
Many tesla owners I know drives like they’re walking on egg shells. Very self conscious individuals…
Interesting
You still need to count the depreciation. EVs depreciate faster.
Not nowadays
That's not an out of pocket cost lmao
There is a video of someone trying to get out of his GMC hummer EV after one year. He lost $30,000 in depreciation and he still owes something like $150,000 on it.
Depreciation does kill any cars value, doesn’t matter what brand.
