People, in Crystal they are exactly as they are in the manga, which is the original Sailor Moon version ever. So, their relationship is the one we can see in Crystal, and believe me, it's waaay better than the old anime :)
Finally we have Mamoru's point of view as well, not just Usagi's. In the 90's anime there were no Mamoru point of view.
He's also younger, if I remember well. In the 90s version their romance was uncomfortable.
I like the manga and the first anime... but I have to agree that I'm happy that Crystal's Mamoru is more like the manga version. In the manga he is much more passionate and affectionate! In the old anime Mamoru is a lot more conservative.

People who judge bad abt SM crystal should read the manga. The manga portrays two sided love between mamoru and usagi and nothing could stop them but the old 90's anime, seems to picture like usagi is the only one showing love to the cold hearted mamoru which I find it distasteful. Even to kiss her in public he think twice eg: sailormoon the movie- promise of a rose. Go check the manga and know the history of it before judging blindly on the new SM crystal. Coz it's my favorite. End of story.

Woah man! Slow down there. Remember Mamoru was a lot older (or seemed to be) older than Usagi in the original 90s anime. Those second thoughts was just Mamoru trying to think of how young Usagi is, not just that but also their maturity gap.
I did read the manga and Crystal made the story suck by taking out everything that made it great and made Usagi and Mamoru’s relationship lame.
Call me strange, but I prefer the original Sailor Moon from the 90s! I grew up with it. So, it will always be a part of me!

I'm reading most of the comments here and I'm getting kinda disappointed. Why does people only see the graphics, the way it looks? That isn't the most important thing! I speak for myself, for me, the story is much more important than any other thing. If u don't like it only because of the graphics, that means u really never liked the anime at all! The manga has a much better story; the way Mamoru looks, the way sailor moon looks... it's much more serious and realistic.
I'm not saying the older one was bad, but this one has a deeply story in it. And usagi was truly immature and in this story, she really grows up. A bit fast, but it really doesn't matter. And sorry about the english. :/

I totally agree with you. The fact that they had Mamoru push Usagi away cause of those "dreams" his future self sent him always pissed me off. Come to find out that was in the anime version only. Read the manga, much better and they actually show Usagi and Mamoru acting like a real couple, not just the crap interaction they had in the anime.

So... CUTE... So happy ^^ currently rewatching the old anime and gonna watch this as well. Ahhh! I can feel the 90's nostalgia coming back!!
I like the new adaptation. From what I've seen, this is a closer adaptation to the original manga. Don't get me wrong, I live and breath the original anime, but this looks great. Sometimes the art throws me off a little, but Usagi seems smarter and more true to the manga Usagi than the basket case in the original anime.
At the moment I'm kinda watching the old version as a filler while waiting for the next episode of the new one and I have to say I absolutely love crystal. it feels more mature (you can still feel the age group they were aiming at, but not so into your face as in the old version) and it's drawn beautifully! (except for the transformation:( ) I already watched the old version when I was younger (though I always preferred wedding peach), but even nostalgia goggles can't make me like the old version more than the new one^^;
As a fan of the classic, manga reader, and crystal...I have to say, other then the less clean cut animation and lack of episodes to transition usagi from monster to beryl in the first season, I love Crystal so much more. Usagi matures and gets a little stronger with each episode, Mamoru is kind, Venus is mature and strong, Rei isn't a backstabber, chibiusa isn't abnoxious, and Makoto shows her feminine side more. As I got older I just found the original annoying. Mamoru was a jerk who treated usagi like dirt, usagi kept on reverting to her immature self, Minako was ditzy, vain and boy crazy, Rei deliberately hurt usagi, and chibiusa was an abnoxious brat. Matoko and Ami were okay, but Luna took on the role of an old teacher vs a loyal companion, and I never could get attached to Artemis.
I actually find Crystal much more graceful and mature. You see just how scary the enemies are and the blood and suffering is much more graphic, escpecially in the Crystal Tokyo arc. As much as I love the comedy of the original, I would choose crystal over it any day.

It's going to take forever, but I really can't wait for them to get the later series. There was so much in the manga that they never even touched on in the original, the last couple of series are going to be fantastic if this doesn't get cancelled.
If anyone is interested in a little series breakdown, removing all the filler, and judging by how closely they've been following the manga, each volume of the manga works into about 5 episodes, and the entirety of the series should run for 90 episodes, under half what the original aired with. Series breakdowns should start with the original series lasting until episode 20, Sailor Moon R will be 21-about 33, Sailor Moon S will be 34 until around 55, Super S will be from 56 to 75, and Sailor Stars will run from 76-90. All in all lasting about three and a half years to complete it all, at one episode every 2 weeks. This, of course if they keep it going.
Despite it ruining some of the nostalgia, I can't wait to see some of the things the original series never touched on though. The origins of Queen Beryl's four generals, the Asteroid Senshi, and the real story that ended the series, which explains how Serenity can possibly be alive to rule Crystal Tokyo in the future; something that was never explained and formed a major plot hole in the original run of the show.
Can't agree more. The lost back story was always one of the things that bothered me after I read the manga and saw how involved and in depth it was. I'm glad this follows the manga more.

iorekbyrnison1 Me too. The way they ended on episode 200 of the original was a huge let down compared to the manga. I'm not looking forward to the super sad moment (minor spoiler inc) where Usagi leaves the 3 cats with her mother though. When her mom starts crying saying that Usagi left like she's never going to see her again, the realness of that moment makes me cry in the manga. T_T I'm probably going to cry like a baby if the series gets to that point and pulls it off well.
***** Never mind there's so much of it - the five series plus three movie spin-offs generated soundtrack albums for each, plus a 10 CD compilation (Memorial Music Box) as well as a 6 CD compilation of the songs (Memorial Song Box), several CDs worth of instrumental renditions (orchestral, orgel, piano, brass), a choral fantasy, and even versions of some of the songs done in stereotypical French style. Most are now out of print, but several websites have archived the album tracks (e.g. sailormusic dot net).
According to Wiki, altogether over 40 Japanese music albums were released for the anime, plus 33 different CD singles. Can any other anime get anywhere near that success?!

The manga is so much better than the old tv show of SM as it shows a much more genuine and heartfelt love story between Usagi and Mamoru. I think that's why I'm loving the new SM Crystal more than the original as it follows that story more closely.
I always felt that their love in the old show wasn't properly developed as they only decided they loved each other after they found out each other's identities and before that they just hated each other. Also it felt like at times like their love was a tad one sided as Mamoru always seemed exasperated with Usagi whereas in the manga I love how caring Mamoru is and how he even gets jealous of Haruka.
This is going to be two comments long, because one of the episodes I will mention would take up a similar length.
I don't think it happened all at once in the original anime. I mean, when they found out they were mutual friends of Motoki, they did try to tone down their banter.
When he finds out that he himself is Tuxedo Mask (the hero whom Usagi (Sailor Moon) is crushing on), he still keeps trying to help the Sailor Guardians whenever he can. Note that he didn't know she was Sailor Moon yet.
In episode 17, Mamoru gives some advice to Usagi about how a serious cameraperson needs to capture their subject's inner qualities, not just the superficial aspects. This is the first time he refers to Usagi by name. In addition, Usagi (as Sailor Moon) does take the advice to heart and gives this lesson to the monster of the day.
In episode 28, when a shy artist decides to use them for her paintings, they do try to get along enough for the portrait to be done. They do gain some respect for each other.
In episode 29, Mamoru (rather playfully) greeted Usagi and Makoto when they go to the arcade to confess to Motoki. Not knowing they already knew about Motoki's girlfriend Reika, Mamoru told them what Motoki told him, which is that he (Motoki) only views them (Usagi and Makoto) as little sisters. Usagi still goes in, claiming she doesn't need his advice, this causes Mamoru to wonder if something was up. He asks Mako if she and Usagi already know that Motoki has a girlfriend, and Mako (calmly) confirms it, which makes Mamoru realize that they were more aware of this than he thought. He mentions that they _might_ have a chance if Reika decides to study abroad in Africa, something Usagi and Mako did not know. Mako demands to know more (though she accidentally goes overboard, and regrets it). He does take a mental note, do not ever get on Mako's bad side. So it's implied that offscreen, he told a more patient Mako (who later told Usagi) what they needed to know. Note that when he did that for them, it was by his own choice.

In episode 34, this one's going to be a long bridge to cross.
When Usagi sees Mamoru walking by, she decides to greet him positively. It's important to note that the times when she wasn't so thrilled to see him, it was because of an accidental collision, or when he had gone up to with her.
This time around, he also decides to be nice enough to part on good terms (hoping she'll always remain upbeat) with her before he goes off to face Zoicite.
When Usagi notices the blood on her hand, the blood coming from Mamoru's shoulder (which happened when Zoicite harmed him as Tuxedo Mask), Usagi was worried about him, so she (shyly) followed him.
When Mamoru found her and asks why she's going up to him, she (shyly) confirms that she was worried about him because of his injury. Mamoru telling her to mind her own business, while harsh, was mostly to keep her from getting involved, and by extention, getting hurt. While Usagi was offended at his tone, she didn't just choose to leave him to fend for himself, she chose to continue on because she was concerned.
When he finds out that Usagi kept following, he is a bit miffed (and scared), because she got herself into this mess with him. When they both get transported, Mamoru asked for Zoicite to spare Usagi before they follow through with their duel. Zoicite, however, planned to kill the two of them before they could reach him.
When the ceiling started to cave in on them, Usagi panicked, and Mamoru told her to keep running until they got to the elevator. When Mamoru clings onto his already injured shoulder, Usagi notices again, and notes to herself that Tuxedo Mask got injured on the exact same shoulder. When she noted the similarity, she quickly denied it, though less aggressively than she usually would have so.
After the tension is out of the way, Usagi asks why Mamoru wanted the Rainbow Crystals, though quickly apologizes, and understands if he would rather keep it secret. Mamoru decides to tell her since there was no use hiding it anymore. He began to explain why he needed the Rainbow Crystals, and Usagi is shocked (but not scared) to know thatbhe even know about the Legendary Silver Crystal. At the age of 6, he and his parents ended up in a car accident. He survived, but his parents did not. Due to the traumatic incident, he wasn't able to remember anything about his past. Mamoru also explains that he had a recurring of someone telling him to find the Silver Crystal, which would lead him to find out his past.
As he ends his trip down memory lane, he then expresses a soft chuckle, since he never thought he'd tell Usagi or anyone about this. Usagi, after listening, then opens up herself, saying she used to think he was the worst person (aside from villains) she met, but now softly says he was the "second-worst", with a little blush. This implies that he wasn't as bad a person as she thought him to be.
Mamoru is flattered, and gives her a humble thanks. Once he looks away from her, Usagi then sees a bit of Tuxedo Mask in him. Usagi quickly denies it again, and like before, it's not out of disgust.
When Zoicite planned to burn Usagi and Mamoru alive in the elevator, Usagi was left with a choice sacrificing her secret, or their lives. She ultimate chose to transform, not caring if he knew her secret anymore. Mamoru is quite shocked (The girl he often teased was the same girl he fought alongside with?), but is grateful that she chose to save his live too.
After the explosion, Zoicite plans to walk off and (try to) lie to Queen Beryl that Mamoru perished in an "accident". Sailor Moon, however, called out to him, and vowed to "punish him in the name of the moon" for all the suffering Zoicite caused other people, especially for trying to kill them (Usagi herself and Mamoru). Note that Usagi makes it known to Zoicite that she was Sailor Moon.
Regardless, Zoicite does note that he'll kill her along with Tuxedo Mask.
Sailor Moon is caught off guard. Note that this time, she isn't even going into ga-ga mode at the mention of Tuxedo Mask. As Sailor Moon wonders what Zoicite means, Mamoru then reveals himself. Sailor Moon is actually shocked, and denies it internally, but once he reveals the rose, and goes through his transformation, Sailor Moon is shocked (The guy who often mocked her as Usagi beforehand was the same guy fighting alongside her as Sailor Moon?) After memories of Mamoru and Tuxedo Mask's separate quotes came to mind, Sailor Moon/Usagi finally comes to terms that Mamoru IS Tuxedo Mask.
Now aware of each other's identities, Mamoru commends Usagi on her bravery, and volunteers to take over. Usagi says not to, because he was still hurt, and begs him to leave while he still can. Mamoru, however, does not leave, because he wants keep Usagi safe.
When Zoicite now challenges Tuxedo Mask to fight, the former attempts to kill Sailor Moon. Mamoru moves inbetween Usagi to take the hit. As Usagi watches in shock, she is distraught, and begs him not to die.
Whether anyone sees it as platonic or romantic, it's obvious that it's genuine love between them this time, because of high concern for each other's safety.
While the original anime strayed a lot from the manga, it managed to make a great gradual build-up.

I will always have a special place in my heart for the 90's anime , but Crystal( which is closer to mangae-which is all I ever wanted) is strictly speaking much better. The animation could do some sprucing up( in its weirder moments), but compared to the 90's one it's much better and this scene , my God, there's a lot more to offer.
I think how they met in sailor moon Crystal is more romantic than the original tho... just my opinion... I also think her new voice really goes well with her character since she's very whiny!

2:05 I see not only Usakis number of wisp of hair have actually changed due to the new version but also her attitude toward Mamoru. Still I stick to the old version because as the opening theme already said it - She´s the one SAILOR MOON!
And I need to say this: 12 years have been past since the old anime was aired and the backdrop still looks the same! They just should have quit the new 3D transformation, which makes the whole anime look trashy by the way and should have spent their money on a high detailed backdrop instead. Then the anime would have been just great not as great as the old one but it would have come out more "freshy" and newish then it is now.
Please, give it time and it will grow into you. Let's all appreciate something I would have died for lol.
Gabi Orchita I don't like the CGI either, it feels "weird". I think I will get used to it, though. The art does need to improve, though. There have been some poorly drawn faces and limbs.
pyr0static u see I was very disappointed at first but CGI is acutely similar to manga,the drawing and such. But I do also believe that they did it for profit,if they could be reasured that all this project will be profitable they would have put more effort into that

Personaly i think she's doing a good job. Usagi was whiny in the manga and I don't think it would feel the same if the voice actor was different.
I don't like Usagi's voice actor for Crystal. I know it's the same voice actor from the old Usagi but her voice is very expressive so it fits the old Usagi but the new Usagi is less expressive so it sucks,

Crystal is the only reason I like Mamoru now. I did not like him at all in the 90's. I didn't think he was handsome (he looked like average Joe/schmoe to me), he seems more refined, mysterious, and dare I say not a jerk this time around. I like this version of Mamoru because NOW I can understand his appeal.
Personally, I love seeing my first childhood anime come back in it's new reincarnated form. Despite the earlier artistic faux pas (i.e. CGI transformation, and inconsistent animation) , I love Sailor Moon Crystal! I had always hoped that Sailor Moon would have new life breathed back into it, and I'm glad the team decided to grant that dream.
I love them both; the new one seem to be more serious, barely any funny scenes so far.
Guys the Crystal is not as best as the classic yet I think that crystal is giving more emotion I mean when usagi met mamoru for me in the classic there was no romance at all. In the crystal from the episode 1-6 I can see that the "new" mamoru seems more emotional than the "old" one. Well I don't really having a problem with that I think that it was right to change a little mamorus character that way the story can be more romantic than 90' I think...

I like SM Crystral, he's a bit nicer and DARIEN WAS A COMPLETE JERK, i don't care what nostaglia people say (i wasn't even alive then) Mamarou is more tolerable
a good thing SM Crystal did was that they made less of a guess then before on usagi being the princess. I thought she was when I saw the first episode of the original serious.
I like Crystal, because it's more than the manga and the girls looks older and cuter.
Love the original better but gotta admit Serena/Usagi is pretty in the new one, especially as Princess Serenity. But will still always love the other Sailor Moon though, can never replace my childhood.

I grew up on sailor moon and just was and remain a huge fan, really when I heard they were doing another I went fanatic like so excited; how do I say this though it's just that this new version it throws me at times and it's not the story line it's the art. Like it seems too animated if that makes since I feel it's so...take the transformations for example. Not at all putting it down though I love sailor moon and will always watch and wait for more.
As someone who grew up watching the original, the new one is inferior in every way judging only from this scene comparison. This isn't nostalgia speaking, I can list off the ways it is inferior. The animation is stiffer and lacks the vibrant energy of the old (and likewise, the new animators have shittier drawing fundamentals), the character designs are too visually "busy", lacking the clean, slick and immediately appealing visual impact of the old one (I get they're trying to stay closer to the shoujo manga, but anime is its own medium and characters should be redesigned with maximum dynamism in mind). The timing and editing alongside the diaolgue (flow/ story beat) is clumsily handled, making for a drawn out, uninteresting scene, again, unlike the snappy, economical original. Oh, and not included here is the blatant CGI transformation! Barf! All transformation sequences should be sakuga animation. But what gives, the things I listed happen to be common problems that plague so many anime nowadays...
Couldn't agree more! Especially the timing and editing is disappointing and not only in this scene, but overally in the series so far. I just don't think anyone would be bothered watching if it wasn't for the nostalgia factor. It's not even that close to manga, as the last episode (4th) showed.

Well, that makes both of us eagerly awaiting this reboot, yet only one of us have actually stopped to think why Naoko's publishers threw some of her ideas out of the window. 90s anime had many faults, but the potrayal of shitennou is certainly not one of them! I generally don't have a prolem with Crystal not being super-faithful to the manga anyway - I just wish they adapted the bloody thing without sucking all the life and/or personality out of it. Even when it follows manga frame-by-frame, it manages to suck all the fabulous flair out of it - just look at the dialogue, the expressions - it's all so bland in Crystal.
Where did you get these thousands upon thousands of teenagers completely new to the franchise from, when all the non-moonie-sourced reviews of Crystal I've seen are lukewarm at best? And spare me the "have u bothered to read the manga" lines, I still have the original 97-99 editions on my shelf, second manga to get professionally issued in my country.
That is because u prejudged the show and doesnt give it a chance, when u first seen sailor moon the old anime u came in with a blank slate and that how u enjoy it...with this one it's a different story line, different take on the same story; the old one has its charm and this one has its own as well, I love it so far. Most people who complain about the negatives overblown it out of proportion, it not as serious as most people made out to be, just sit back and enjoy. Other fandom been waiting for shows they want to continue and not getting it, here toei release the new sailor moon manga version and all people doing is bitching lol.
I couldn't agree more. The older one, visually was far superior to crystal, which doesn't make sense to me considering they had an entire two years in development for SMC.
***** In my opinion, crystal look more polish and colorful compare to the old anime; the art style is not for everyone I suppose, but that is a minor detail, if u watch crystal u have to accept the art style, and stop comparing to the old anime art style since u will enjoy it better that way, this is meant to be closer to the manga, the character look kind of long and thin I've seen this style used before in other animes so it's not a big deal. If u already watched to ep 4 then u should be used to the art style by now.

sailor moon crystal was based more on the manga, so technically its not a 'real reboot' so id say sailor moons crystal
THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ OR WATCHED THE ANIME(S): I think the thing I liked more about the old one is the fact that they did well at hiding the fact that they were lovers from the past. and it made it seem like they didnt know who the princess was in the old anime. Crystal while it has its cutesy romantic moments between the two and the characters are beautiful dont get me wrong. The thing that irks me is the fact that you clearly know who this lost princess is by the title cards, the ending theme and even the fact that they center more around Usagi and Mamoru. They arent fooling anyone lol. Now if you are new to the anime, and havent read an ounce of the manga or whatever the case you can still see this. Even the fact in ep 6 where Mamoru says something that makes her say something about her "being apart of a group of soldiers (or something along these lines) and she cant help others cause she doesnt have "special powers" and such" then she is like i cant transform cause he will know I am Sailor Moon and when Mamoru tells her to transform and she is like " Wha??? You knew I was Sailor Moon and I had the WTF moment on my face ._. ....LOL YOU JUST TOLD HIM YOU WERE THE LEADER!!! im like ugh. Now I know it follows the manga and while I greatly appreciate that because when it was announced that we were getting SM Reboot I was like SHI*CHEA (pardon my simple means of censoring that...you know kiddies and all ^^) but it feels like I am being cheated because while reading the manga, there is no hint of who this princess is other than she is the "Moon" princess. Woah really? XD but the fact that they animate this and show the Hair, Title cards and even the break cards then you show me this stupid ending. I feel cheated lol but I love Naoko for the childhood she gave me with Sailor Moon. I am sorry that this turned into a rant of some sort but I needed to state this for some reason...
In the manga, mamoru was wearing a tuxedo but they dont have the chills when they met like in the sailor moon crystal. :/
Only thing I like about Crystal is that the story line follows the manga BUT I wish they didn't do a weird, deformed looking transformation. ;w; But that's just me.
I still love the old one which i grew uo with and the crystal ver isnt fun like the original one, and i know crysatal follows the manga ver but the reasom why the 90's ver has skip parts is because they only choose parte which they feel is best for the audeience.

First one for the win. The second one is Love at first sight, pfftttfpfppf, so cliche.
I grew up with 90s one but I now love crystal version now. Why? Because at least we get a romance from the start between them. In the 90s one they never showed any attraction or love they hated each other, and that romance only showed up because of their past memories which implied that if usagi hadn't remembered her love for endymion and that mamoru was endy and tuxedo mask then she wouldnt have loved him and vice versa with Mamoru. At least in crystal there's love and attraction shown pre-memories

Crystal version would be SO enjoyable if only they had done a better job with the designs of the characters like they did in the 3rd season. Mamoru is just not as good looking as he was in the 90s anime. Rewatching the original series you can appreciate how all of the characters were drawn so beautifully compared to other 90s animes and how they all expressed so much emotion throughout all the moments. The original story is more interesting tho, I wish i could rewatch Crystal episodes :/

Similar, but I find SM Crystal so annoying with all the bubbles and the shininess. It's as if it is marketed for even smaller girls than the original.
I think it's just cause the manga was filled with bubbles & sparklies and the idea was to be more similar to the manga then the old anime was. This will also be a much, much, much shorter run than the old anime (basically removing all the filler) so they have to find ways to establish the attraction between Tuxedo Mask & Sailor Moon right off the bat. The manga (in my opinion) shows a MUCH sweeter and gentler "getting together" of SM & TM. There's no love triangle between Rei & Mamoru & Usagi and Mamoru pretty much just aims straight for Usagi without hesitation. Also, it's nice that they clarify that he's a highschool student in this anime. In the old Anime, he looked like he was already in college (no school uniform) and was Motoki's age. Motoki & Mamoru are at least 2 years apart minimum. Oops, sorry, I'm ranting. lol

I actually didn't know that Mamoru was a high school student when he met Usagi. That surprised me. I really did dig the "much older man" attraction! Still, I'm definitely going to continue watching the whole thing. Really curious about how it turns out. Thanks for the reply!

Well, nothing's stopping you from watching the old ones again! :3 Plus, they re-dubbed them in the new blurays, uncut, keeping the cultural references, the ORIGINAL names and not cutting out or changing the nature of the characters (ex: Haruka/Michiru relationship). So it might be worth it to re-watch them and have a new experience with the classics! :)
As for my opinion on Usagi/Mamoru age difference... well, I'm probably bias since I'm a mom but if my 14 year old daughter was dating a 17 year old, I'd already be a bit nervous (I'd have to really stress the whole sex talk with an older boyfriend) but I'd be really, really nervous with a 14 year old dating a 19 year old. That's not even legal in my country. lol

The animation and drawings on Crystal are much less expressive and they move like dolls, I can see that as a professional, at least in this clip.
