I wanted to examine and appreciate how closely the new Sailor Moon Crystal anime followed the original artwork, layout and direction from the source material. This is a side-by-side comparison!
This is more of a comparison of the artwork than the dialogue, so I wasn't generally interested in including word bubbles if the images didn't match. There are a handful of frames from the manga that are repeated if the scene in the episode was a little longer or changed shots a few times, and there are a handful of images that are not in the exact order they appear on the page; I was more concerned with keeping them alongside the anime. This does not happen often, though, as the anime is extremely faithful! I did take SOME liberties in choosing what images to include, so please be mindful that I'm WAY overthinking this.
If it was not included in the episode, I did not include the artwork from the manga, and any large portion of footage not accompanied by manga artwork indicates that it was not a part of the original book.

I feel like they got everything right with crystal except the eyes
they just look....kinda off?
Yeah, the critical part in crystal is that they make the pupils way bigger than in the manga version, specially when they show surprise expressions: The pupils should be very tiny when surprised, and a little smaller when showing a neutral expression. As a good point, the outline of the eyes is consistent with the manga.
Also, in the manga there are still tiny elements of super deformed faces, like sweatdrops when characters are ashamed and veins in the face or eyeless faces when they're upset. They didn't respect that style in crystal.
The pupils shine also is slightly off compared to the manga. They show 2 spots shinning, one in the upper left and one in the lower right, but in crysta they show only one and the one in the lower right it's just a blurred spot.
Keeping the subject with the eyes, in the manga they're drawn sharper than in crystal. Not so much "antialiasing"
The hair also doens't have many details in crystal, like hair lines (See Naru's/Molly hair at 1:08). They also put too much shine in the hair, like it's always wet in crystal
Those little details may prove to get far more acceptance to the new version. Respecting the manga plot is by far a very good point. The stronger argument to the crystal version is that they tried to stay as close to the manga. They just needed to polish those little details to improve it a lot and show a new proposal

I think that the emotions and expressions from the manga are more from the original sailor moon. The characters from the crystal have like no personality and lack of expressive emotions and the original Sailor moon does have all these things. Omg I wasnt thinking of watching sailor moom crystal since I didn't like how the animation or art was design at first, but just seeing season 3 beautiful opening with the lovely song made me cry because its as close to the old generation sailor moon which is and still my favorite. Serena and the sailor scouts now look a lot to the old sailor moon characters and I'm very proud and thankful for that.The animation drawings has improved a lot and I've decided that I should be giving a chance to crystal now that I know overall it won't bring me disappointments as I thought before. Hopefully the expressions and emotions also improves. I can see that season 3 animation is beautiful now but deep inside I know that the old sailor moon generation is my deep love which no words can explain how much I love it and how it will always be in my heart forever💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖. I would make sure that crystal gets a special part in my heart too.❤
Melanie Vasquez I hate to break it to you but the manga series IS the original story. The 1990s series was an animated adaptation with a lot of filler episodes (the studio was waiting for new chapters from Naoko Takeuchi so they decided to make the stories longer), not the original work. Plain and simple

It seems to me, did they just remove in Crystal all the emotions and funny faces?
Man I wish they kept this art style , she would have looks amazing in eternal and more regal. I hate how they look to generic like every magical girl now .

It’s way better than how the eternal movie look, they don’t look regal anymore and now they all look like your generic magical girl and they look the same.
@@BriEntAnderson The artstyle of eternal were so much beautiful than season 1 and 2. and I'm glad that they decided to make Sailor moon cosmos with the eternal art style
i read the sailor stars manga is very different between the animei, the stories are very good
I don't really hate SMC S1-S2 artstyle but it's just need MORE EXPRESSION!!!

But it looks COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! Usagi is way too "prettified" and doesn't have nearly as much expression, the most expressive scene is when she's buried in her bed ignoring Luna. I seriously do not understand how people can think they look similar at all.
To its credit it tries to capture the look of the more detailed manga artwork but it hardly looked like that. I’d argue that season 3 looked the most like the manga
Honestly I really like the storyline of the anime better than the manga. I really, really don’t like the manga that much.
