Madeline Kahn is, quite simply, one of the funniest human beings who has ever existed on this planet. And presumably on any other planet, though I'm sure Uranus has some real cut-ups.
Hahahahahaha totally agree. And I don't know, I've always hear Uranus is full of some pretty shtty people.. (that's right, I took the low-hanging fruit joke)
Makes sense to do so. I’ve heard that low hanging fruit are often found hanging down around Uranus. And Madeline Kahn is a one of a kind comedic talent. No cap.
Fun facts - when this was released, there were movie theaters that only received 1 of the 3 endings and if you wanted to see all three back then, you had to go to three separate places to see the other endings. The singing telegraph girl was played by Jane Wiedlin, who was a member of the one of the most successful all-girl groups of the 1980s, "The Go-Gos," she also had one solo top 10 hit in 1988, "Rush Hour" that peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1988. Colleen Camp, who played Yvette, had a minor role playing Reese Witherspoon's mother in the dark comedy (and it's frigging GOOD), "Election." Mr. Green, played by Michael McKean, gained fame as Lenny (of Lenny & Squiggy) on "Laverne & Shirley" Both Eileen Brennan & Leslie Ann Warren had recurring roles on "Will & Grace." Eileen played Jack's acting coach, Zondra & Leslie Ann played Tina, the woman who was having the affair with Will's dad. Leslie Ann was not supposed to be in the movie as the actress who was to play her had to withdraw because she was entering rehab because of her drug/alcohol addiction and that was the late great Carrie Fisher. Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) was the original choice for Wadsworth, but the director didn't think he was well known at that time and that's why Tim Curry was given the role. This was "Friends" before the TV show, as all actors were paid the same salary, no matter who was more well-known then the others.
Not only are there alternate endings, if you buy the DVD or Blu-ray you get all three and it'll pick one at random to show you, so you can be surprised. You can also choose to play all three endings in a row to see all of them.
I actually yelled "Oh my GAWD!!" when I saw this. I wanted something fun to watch while I had lunch. And the first thing I saw when I opened TH-cam was this, my favourite reactors watching one of my favourite movies!! I saw this when it was first released, and even went to three different theaters to see all three endings. 😄🥰
Awww thank you!!! That’s awesome! And so nice :) Yeah honestly I didn’t know that theaters showed different endings. That’s so cool and a brilliant strategy on their part actually, to attract repeat viewings. I did the same with repeat viewings of Titanic, but every time the ship still went down and Rose hogged the whole door for herself. 🤷♂️
I was going to watch it but I found out it had no diversity. The only LGBTQ person only PRETENDED to be gay. And the only black person in the film was brutally murdered almost immediately. No thanks. I need diversity. Diversity is our strength.
@@StaceysprobablycryingSame. It’s one of my comfort movies that I put in if I’m feeling a bit blue. Never fails to entertain. I’d say it’s pretty close to a perfectly executed production.
A movie that was released quite a few years prior to this and is every bit as fun and funny as this is the hilarious all-star cast film "Murder by Death." Eileen Brennan was also in that film. It is naughty, funny, clever and also a murder mystery in which you'll never guess the ending! It's well worth the watch!
I LOVE Murder By Death. It's so obscure and I've never seen anyone react to it but it is such a classic. So funny and clever and way ahead of its time as a parody film.
Two bits of trivia: I read that the house was (sadly) a set. But a couple scenes, like the ballroom, were filmed on location. I was amazed when I found out that Madeline Kahn improvised her "flames ... on the side of my head" speech. The lady was a genius. And a suggestion for another reaction, since you enjoyed Clue, is Murder by Death, from 1976. Similar in that it's an all-star cast comedy murder mystery set in a creepy manor house. It also stars Eileen Brennan, and Maggie Smith, and a load of other legends.
I am SHOCKED that was improvised, but then again, I probably shouldn't be. She's amazing. Just found out about Murder by Death, and it sounds awesome. I wish that was a real house :( I'd be happy with just one secret passageway lol
There are a lot of little clues and Easter eggs in this movie. At dinner, Colonel Mustard says "the female of the species is more deadly than the male," and in the first two endings all the murderers were women. Wadsworth says the police will arrive in 45 minutes and that how much time passes until the cops come, the secret passages and layout of the rooms is the same as on the board game, etc. And just like in a game, any player could be the murderer, which is why the 3rd ending is what really happened.
9:48 There was a musical stage productions based on the movie back in 1997/98, it lasted 29 performances and 17 previews it included an interactive feature in which audience members randomly select cards that determine which suspect committed the murder, which weapon was used, and in what room the murder took place. Based on the cards drawn, the mystery has 216 possible endings, for which the script provides appropriate selections of dialogue to be delivered at the show's conclusion.
@@DavidvsFilm Actually this movie came out in 1985...but there is now a musical based on the movie that will be playing at the Ahmanson Theater in downtown Los Angeles this summer.
Another great movie that is often underrated is Oscar starring Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Tim Curry and Chazz Palminteri. A 1991 comedy with the same chaotic comedic energy as Clue.
I actually saw this! Years ago. I had a friend who recommended it, and so I watched and thought it was great. :) I don't think Marc has seen it though.
I’m 42 and grew up watching this movie over and over. My family still quotes this heavily in every day conversation. I loved watching y’all react to this. It’s so damn funny.
This is such a fun movie! When it was in the movie theaters, each theater was given one of the three endings. So it ended differently depending on where you saw it. You didn't really know the other endings unless you watched it all three times.
The interior of the house was a set on the Paramount lot. The exterior was partially the Max Bush mansion in Pasadena with set extensions painted to make it look bigger.
@@DavidvsFilm Madeline Kahn's entrance is so iconic 😭 I love her so much. And Tim Curry is brilliant. I'm so glad I didn't have to make any editing decisions lol I'd have had a breakdown 🤣
The game 'Clue' came long before the movie, and is based one the British board game 'Cluedo'. Kellye Nakahara (Mrs. Ho) portrayed Nurse Kellye Yamato in 169 episodes of M * A * S * H.
Thank you so much!! I suspected as much but wasn't sure. And thank you also for the trivia about Mrs. Ho! The theme song from M*A*S*H signaled it was time for bed all through my childhood ;)
My all-time favorite movie! Fun fact: The interior layout of the house (studio set) is the same as the original board game, including which rooms are connected by the secret passages! (Apologies to anyone who already mentioned this trivia tidbit-I didn’t have time to read through the multitude of previous comments)
I always thought the floorplan of the house from the game board would be very interesting if made into an actual building. No two rooms share a wall, so each room would be practically soundproofed from every other. A completely inefficient use of square footage, but definitely interesting, architecturally.
My favorite interaction and quote: The Chief: Good evening. Have you ever given any thought to the kingdom of heaven? Mrs. Peacock: What? The Chief: Repent. The kingdom of heaven IS at hand. Miss Scarlet: You ain't just whistlin' Dixie. The Chief: Armageddon is almost upon us. Professor Plum: I got news for you - it's already here. Mrs. Peacock: Go away. The Chief: But your souls are in danger. Mrs. Peacock: Our lives our in danger, you beatnik.
Hecccckkkk yesssss!!!! I love this entire interaction just like you do. This is my beef with TH-cam and copyright though- I want to leave the whole scene in! I know I can't and I realize I'll most likely get dinged if I try to, so I have to pick and choose. I left in "I got news for you, it's already here" because I've actually been paraphrasing that quote at home since we watched this haha. Marc (texting from work): "I ordered something from Amazon that should be delivered today." Me: "I got news for you - it's already here."
@@DavidvsFilm 🤣😂🤣😂 oh no... poor Mark! He's gonna be hearing that a lot now! My favorite is "Our LIVES are in danger, ya beatnik!" And then the way she slams the door. But I use Miss Scarlet line so often, nearly daily "You ain't just whistlin' 'Dixie'". I use it anytime someone says something that I would respond to with "Right!?" Another one of favorites is the one that cracked you up: Plumb: What are you afraid of, a fate worse than death? Peacock: No, just death, isn't that enough? It's just filled with so many great one-liners and quotes. It's a classic. It's actually recently (past twenty years or so) become the new Rocky Horror Picture Show in terms of live performances where the audience shout the lines of dialogue.
I collect the game and am obsessed with the movie. The og game Cluedo was created in the UK by Waddington Ltd in the 1940s. US bought the rights to sell the game and started selling it in 1949. The US is the only ones to change the name from Cluedo to Clue.
The more you watch this the more you see the details. In the game, each character is wearing their character’s color, however, in the movie, each of their cars is the color of their alias. When you think back to Mr Boddy being the butler, you realize when you rewatch it just how desperate he was to get out of the house. Then he resorted to trying to have the real Mr Boddy killed so they could be free. Btw if you love this watch Oscar with Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, and Tim Curry. It’s a supper fun a satirical movie.
Love this movie. All of the actors were great. I was a fan of Leslie Ann Warren. She's also in Victor/Victoria in another comedy role alongside Julie Andrews, James Garner, Alex Karras and Robert Preston. The game came first. Each of the endings showed in a different theater. They weren't all shown together until they put it on vhs. because finding a huge house that matched the layout of the Clue board game almost exactly probably would have been an issue, the filmmakers opted to build the interior of Hill House on a soundstage on the Paramount Studio lot in Hollywood, California. All interior scenes were filmed at the Paramount lot, except the ballroom scene. The ballroom, as well two driveway exteriors, were filmed on location at a mansion in South Pasadena, California. This site was destroyed in a fire on October 5, 2005.
I love it too. And thank you so much for the trivia!! You know how much it warms my heart :) I remember you telling me how great Victor/Victoria is, and I still plan to watch that one! I didn't realize that Lesley Ann Warren was in it too.
@@torontomameNumerous sets, props, and original film prints were unfortunately destroyed that way. Ever hear of the infamous Universal Studios fire that destroyed a ton of film history?
Love this movie. Tried catching all the characters missing from scenes and I never can. Shot in such a wonderful slap stick style. Another great ensemble cast movie shot like it could have been a stage production is Noises Off. Y’all would love it.
I love that you picked this line from the movie for your title! It's one of my favorite lines and Madeline Kahn's delivery of it is stellar. She was such a gem and like many others, left us too soon.
This never gets old!! The board game was based on Cluedo that was first made in 1949 in England. When the movie first came out, the movie only had one of the endings. All of them were available but depending on where you were in the country, you didn't know which ending you were going to get. They didn't have all three until they released it on video.
Clue is one of my favorites..total stellar cast, great writers, just everything worked..Tim, Madeline, Eileen, Martin...they were and are the epitome of greatness...
When I was watching Knives Out I thought it had Clue vibes, and I agree it's a good example of taking inspiration from an older movie but not just copying it.
Like the idea is the board game; this movie was to have multiple endings; 4 to be exact, but the fourth was cut before it was finished filming. The movie was released with one of the 3 endings, and they gave you a mini Clue sheet to keep track of who the murderer was. I was able to see 2 of the 3 endings in theaters, but I didn't see the final ending until the movie was released on home media. The only other movie like this was Murder By Death (1976), and also featured Eileen Brennan amongst its cast. Great movie and cast Thawte as well, but that movie will keep you guessing well after it ends
Same to you!!! And oh I could not agree more!! All I remember about watching it as a kid was the cool secret passageways and my mom having to explain what "mitts" were when Scarlett says, "Get your mitts off me." lol
My favorite part of this movie was the pacing and the line delivery. This movie never would have worked without the actors’ impeccable comedic timing. Both Knives Out and this are homages to Agatha Christie. I mean classic mystery in general but mostly Agatha Christie. One’s not a copy of the other. This has a lot of And Then There We’re None elements in it.
This has been one of my favourite movies since I was a child (it came out when I was 6). Every time I watch it I think to myself, "Pay attention to who's in the kitchen when they discover the cook," and every time I forget because I get pulled into the plot. A great movie that always entertains.
Totally agree! I love her, and she was definitely gone too soon. I really like how each of her roles (that I've seen anyway) are so different, and yet she's so great in each.
Omg i nearly choked on my drink when Mrs. Scarlett says "I love getting presents from strange men" and David said "like syphilis" 😂😂😂 caught me so off guard and i havent laughed that hard in awhile. The extra hilarity from the way he said syphilis...good lawd hahahaha!!!
This film was H I larious! My brother and I watched this again and again and again growing up. Madeleine Kahn was absolutely amazing in everything she did and I miss her! Film: “I enjoy getting presents from strange men” David: “like syphilis” 🤣🤣🤣 The set! Oh my lord! However, I would hate to clean it 😂 The endings were given out to different theatres and no one knew which the real one was until they finally released the VHS tape. I’m so glad I got to watch this with you! The one liners from the two of you kill me ❤
Thank you my friend!! OMG you’re right about cleaning the set btw lol. Very true. Tough cleaning the Home Alone set or ANY Tarantino movie is probably worse lol
Great reaction! I LOVE this movie, and I’m glad it has become a bit of a cult classic. Great writing, and brilliant acting. I saw this in the theater when it came out, and as some mentioned, audiences initially only saw one of the 3 endings. I think in our theater, you could see other endings by waiting for the next release…like every 2 weeks they’d release a different version. Another movie I think you’d enjoy and also didn’t seem to get the props I think it deserved was “Noises Off”…another star-packed cast including John Ritter, Carol Burnett, and Christopher Reeve. If you do watch it, I will say that the first 15 minutes may seem a bit boring, but it is setting up the rest of the movie, and it’s totally worth it. So funny!
Totally agree, although I have to say that Mrs. Peacock made me laugh the most while I was watching. Madeline Kahn's deadpan performance as Mrs. White is just iconic though, and I can't imagine anyone else doing that part as well.
So all along, it was Marc and David, in the reaction studio, with the movie! I might’ve known. You two are always killing it with these videos. Happy New Year! You’re certainly off to a great start.
This movie is brilliant. I always loved how there was different endings. The version I watched would randomize the ending, so you didn't know which killer it on rewatch unless you watched for the clues.
Love Clue! Who did you guys play as when you played the board game. Everyone tends to have a favourite. I always liked Scarlett (so original 😅) . Eileen Brennan who plays Mrs Peacock is so funny. She's so good in Private Benjamin with Goldie Hawn.
I LOVED Eileen Brennan in this!! Honestly she was my favorite, and the one who consistently made me laugh out loud on repeated watchings during editing this reaction. Re: who we played in the game.. I asked Marc, and he said he never played it. As for me, obviously Scarlett as well! haha
Man I miss Tim Curry. I know something happened to him in recent years that affected his health, but he's one of my fav actors for a reason. The board game is one of my favs. I was already used to the game before I saw this movie on VHS in the early 90s. Our board game version had 4 extra chars and more rooms, so when this movie came out, I was like, "Where's this char?" lol. My mom had to tell me that our version wasn't the original board game lol. The four extra chars were Miss Peach, Sgt. Gray, Madame Rose, and Monsieur Brunette.
I must have watched this 100 times back in the day. I taped it off cable. Both Miss Scarlett and Mrs. White were influences on my personality. Let's not lie, Peacock was too. 😂
I was so happy to see you reacting to Clue! I absolutely love this movie. And I feel like you would both also enjoy watching Murder by Death which predates Clue by nine years. It’s so funny and I really do hope you’ll consider doing a reaction of it. Your videos always make me feel better. 💐
Happy Movie Sunday, David and Marc! 😊 Great reaction you two! Oh my gosh! I love this movie so much! It's one of my top favorite comfort movies. So much fun! And with a great cast. The scene where Wadsworth is explaining how the murders were committed is one of the best scenes. And I love all three endings. Fun Fact: Madeline Kahn's short "Flames...on the side of my face" monologue was ad-libbed. Fun Fact #2: Carrie Fisher(Star Wars' Princess Leia) was originally supposed to play Miss Scarlett. But had to go to rehab four days before the start of filming. For another great Christopher Lloyd movie that I very highly recommend the 1988 "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". For another great Leslie Ann Warren(Miss Scarlett) movie I very highly recommend the 1992 movie "Pure Country". Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊
OMG Pure Country!!! I forgot about that movie! I’ve never seen it from start to finish, just snippets of various scenes. And I’m pretty sure “I Cross My Heart” was played at every school dance in my hometown for the next 20 years lol.
@DavidvsFilm YES!! I hadn't heard anything about him in awhile so I recently pulled up some info bout him & was greatly saddened to see how he's had such a rough decline in health. I can't imagine how difficult life must be for him now. But he's such an icon & don't even get me started on him in Rocky Horror Picture Show!!!❤️❤️❤️
I love this movie so much. My all time favorite. Tim Curry is a legend. I watch his movie so much that my VHS ate my tape. Good thing I got my Blu-ray. I love how they used the color of each character's car is the same color as their playing piece in the game.
OMG THANK YOU!!! This is one of my favorite movies. I saw it the first time when it was on Comedy Central around Christmas 2001. Fell in love with it. This was when I got really into Tim Curry, and I discovered Rocky Horror Picture Show by the following Halloween. It was a very interesting time in my life.
I love love the last line of your comment, “It was a very interesting time in my life.” That’s perfect. I’m going to follow any story I tell with that now lol.
Ugh… this movie is *SO* fucking good! Brilliance such as this is only possible when you have an *incredible* script/writing being *expertly* brought to life by genuinely *amazing* acting! In my opinion, it’s pretty rare to have to have an ensemble cast in which each and every actor *murders* (Pun intended! lol.) their role! They used to play this on HBO/Showtime/Cinemax _and_ several different cable stations when I was a kid, thus I know the movie inside and out!! As far as a remake goes… I _really_ don’t think that they should _ever_ attempt to make one. I mean, there _are_ writers/directors/actors out there who are able to pull of films in a _somewhat_ similar, murder-mystery-comedy vein (See: Knives Out & Glass Onion.), Clue is the definition of “lightning in a bottle” and no matter how good of a remake they were to do, they could simply _never_ capture the magic of the original!
Yes, the game came first. The game was invented in 1949! The movie, however, was set in 1954. They made a ton of references to it in this movie... all the characters, locations and weapons from the game appear in the movie.
I do love this movie, especially for the cast. Some of the best comedic work from them. I hope you two are surviving the cold! Windy and cold here, but minimal snow, unlike our neighbor to the west with their 2'!
Hey hey!! It's getting pretty chilly, but I think we'll make it lol. If we get any precipitation at all, it will be the usual: literally 1/4 inch of snow/ice, and kids will pile it together with dirt to make a sad "snowman". On the bright side, we stocked up on booze and Doritos.
Great reaction. Such a fun movie. It did awfully at the theaters. I used to work at a video rental place at the time. So, I got a discount and was able to watch a lot of different stuff. This is one I took home and wondered, “Why wasn’t this popular?” I think maybe… 1) it’s a bit too kitchy for some and 2) the theater version didn’t show the multiple endings. So, most theater viewers probably thought… “meh, cute… but whatever”. The rental and, eventually, DVD market really drove this movie. It’s fabulous. And the cast My advice… react to the similarly oriented movie Murder By Death. A ****way**** underrated movie with a similarly phenomenal cast. It’s a little more subtle with its ridiculousness. So, you need to pay attention. But it’s fabulous. And, unbelievably, one of the main actresses is in both… Eileen Brennen. Give it a watch. Murder By Death. Great film!
Thank you so much! I completely agree that this move is incredibly fun, and I’m so glad that its long-term appeal outpaced its contemporary shortcomings. :) I had not heard of Murder By Death prior to reading the comments for Clue, but I’m really excited about it now! Even if not on the channel (though I’d like to include it), I want to give it a watch. Thanks again!!
I love this movie so much! It was my favorite movie until 1994, when The Crow came out. (I wore out my VHS tapes of Clue and Labyrinth!) I had SUCH a crush on Tim Curry! And THEN I saw him in Rocky Horror Picture Show, and loved him more! And that voice! Be still my heart. And every time I hear someone saw "To make a long story short." I say "Too late!" to this day! Great reaction!
This movie is a hoot. Not sure you knew but when it was released it was released with one of three endings and you could choose which ending a,b, or c. Also if you liked this one you’ll like Murder by Death. That one’s about mystery book characters being brought together for a murder mystery. It’s more on the subtle comedy side but still quite funny.
I did NOT know that at the time, and I think that is awesome. Both as a movie goer and also from a marketing perspective lol. I also had not heard about Murder by Death until a few hours ago. I took a quick peek at the imdb and it looks like something I would love, actually.
Great reaction guys! I've always heard of this movie, but I've never seen it. I didn't know there was so much comedy though! I always thought that it was a drama/who-dun-it. Tim Currey should have been a hint for the comedy, but he does do dramas from time to time. I wasn't aware of the rest of the cast, so I didn't know Madeline Kahn was in this. But this almost has a "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie element to it, but this has more comedy. (A group of strangers are invited and brought together to a house under false pretenses, except they are all being accused of killing someone from their pasts. They too are not allowed to leave, because the house is on an island only reached by boat. Then over the course of a few days, they all are killed off one by one, never knowing who it is and never meeting their supposed host, until they realize one of the guests has to be the murderer. Then they all start turning on each other).
Ohhh yes, you are so right. I wasn’t thinking of that one at the time, but I actually read that book. As well as Murder on the Orient Express, which is somewhat similar as well (could have been anyone, all had an ax to grind, etc)
For some reason I absolutely love Mr Greens final line of " I am going to go home and sleep with my wife" Showing that hes been in character the entire film
This has been a top movie for me since I was a kid! Played the game all the time too! When I saw my favorite quote as your header, i had to watch it for both reasons. Hard to believe this was released the same year as I saw your reaction posted!
People probably mentioned this. But the reason there were three different endings is because when this released in theaters, they would give each theater a different version of the movie with one of the three endings. This way, nobody could spoil the ending for other people because there was a 2/3 chance that they would see a version of the movie with a different ending.
I'm not sure how old the game of Clue is, but my family has the board game from DECADES ago. I would say ours is at least from the 70s and we still occasionally use it.
Can't go wrong with Time Curry. Also, the actress playing Evette was Aunt Ginny in A Few Good Men, and the wife of the Arcade owner in Wayne's World...
Omg I did NOT remember her in Wayne's World at all, but I do remember her in Four Christmases and in a movie called Walk Like a Man. Which, by the way, I don't think anyone saw except for me and the cast's families.
At 12:44 ... Mrs. Peacock bops Mrs. White's boob .... Mrs. White's facial expression is like "Oh, the audacity!" Hahaha!!!! A fun film flub that most people miss. Great reaction!
Funny you mentioned it would be a good stage show. I saw two live productions of it about a year ago. The moving sets the theater set up on the sides of the stage to represent the different main rooms were impressive. And they also did multiple endings. lol. It's definitely a fantastic stage show. My favorite part of the set was the large portrait of Tim Curry in the foyer.
I was going to try and hold off watching this so I can watch it during a family get together that I wanted to avoid but I just couldn't. Guess Ihsve to rewatch 😂
"Even if you were right, that would be one plus one plus two plus one, not one plus *two* plus one plus one." -Wadsworth "I'M NOT SHOUTING!!!" Great reaction fellas. Thanks for the laughs and the reaction. Keep on keeping on and Gritos from Tejas. "Can you keep a secret? (Answers yes) ...so can I."
The game came out first, in the 1940s. A couple named the Pratts invented it during WWII when they were stuck inside every evening due to air raids on London. Sort of like picking up a quarantine hobby. In everywhere except North America, the game is called Cluedo. I wonder if the movie was released under that name in other countries?
I actually played the cop in a community theater production of the play. It was amazing and is so funny if you have the right cast. Edit: it’s even more hilarious with no doors or walls and just tape on the floor to mark the rooms!!
Sesame Street. Anyone born between 1974-1981 remembers the occasional Ms Kahn duet with Grover. While on, both of my parents would go “I’m so tired, tired of……” and b/c they were too cool allowed me to watch Blazzin’ Saddles at age 8. Why? The orchestra in the desert with the high five. I also saw Airplane! At a much too young age. Edit: the last line of the movie is as if Norm MacDonald wrote this flick. Someone else said that, but I agree strongly.
So in 85 you didn't know which ending you would get. There were the 3, for the DVD they put them all on. I also remember eventually theaters were advertising the ending they had.
@@DavidvsFilm Yes! I had the board game long before the movie came out. It included secret passageways, and it got my imagination all fired up every time. The movie added more of that feeling, and then down the road, it helped me desire an enormous mansion with gorgeous woodwork. FWIW, Mrs.Peacock has always been my favorite character. Thanks again!
Happy New Year fellas! Great reactions from you both to a very fun movie. Just the thing to watch as I sit by the fireplace on this cold, 10 degrees in Akron, Sunday afternoon. I could use a hot Toddy...or a hot Bobby, maybe a hot Ronnie. Anyway, if you enjoyed this satire, I think you'd like MURDER BY DEATH (1976.) It's a parody/satire involving fictional literary detectives all being invited to a mansion for a weekend by an unknown host and needing to solve a murder. Wait until you hear Maggie Smith say, "I want my Dickie." Think Ten Little Indians with eye rolling puns and sight gags.
10 degrees???? Wow, that's a tad chilly lol. It's 32 right now, so we officially hit freezing for the first time in '24! I had not heard of Murder by Death, but I checked it out and looks awesome to me. And obviously, I love Maggie Smith. ;) lol @ Hot Ronnie haha. Clever.

Worth watching "What's Up, Doc" Madeline made her debut in that movie. Funny and chaotic movie with Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neil.
DEFINITELY TOP 10K
I'd put her in the top 10, but not the best...

Colleen Camp, who played Yvette, had a minor role playing Reese Witherspoon's mother in the dark comedy (and it's frigging GOOD), "Election."
Mr. Green, played by Michael McKean, gained fame as Lenny (of Lenny & Squiggy) on "Laverne & Shirley"
Both Eileen Brennan & Leslie Ann Warren had recurring roles on "Will & Grace." Eileen played Jack's acting coach, Zondra & Leslie Ann played Tina, the woman who was having the affair with Will's dad.

I saw this when it was first released, and even went to three different theaters to see all three endings. 😄🥰
Awww thank you!!! That’s awesome! And so nice :)
Yeah honestly I didn’t know that theaters showed different endings.
This movie along side what’s up doc are two of my favorites anytime I need a laugh I can watch either one
I can't believe how criminally underrated this film is. I think it's fun and hilarious! =D
Yes!! Completely agree.
This is no joke in my top 10! So many things going for it every which way you look at it 😊
@@StaceysprobablycryingSame.
I’m not a Frenchy, I’m a Belgie. That movie is classic
Maggie Smith is in it, too!
yES! I used to watch both of these all the time!
I LOVE Murder By Death. It's so obscure and I've never seen anyone react to it but it is such a classic. So funny and clever and way ahead of its time as a parody film.
Two bits of trivia:
I read that the house was (sadly) a set.
The creators said that they mostly stuck to the script & there was very little improv, but they allowed her to improvise. Who wouldn't? lol
Same house as Murder by Death, along with Eileen Brennan again.
Yes, Murder by Death is, in my humble opinion, even MORE genius than this.
@@sproductionsincpeople like that, you don’t tell them how to do their job.
9:48 There was a musical stage productions based on the movie back in 1997/98, it lasted 29 performances and 17 previews
it included an interactive feature in which audience members randomly select cards that determine which suspect committed the murder, which weapon was used, and in what room the murder took place. Based on the cards drawn, the mystery has 216 possible endings, for which the script provides appropriate selections of dialogue to be delivered at the show's conclusion.
Thank you for telling us this :) I would have loved to go to that kind of show!
@@DavidvsFilm Actually this movie came out in 1985...but there is now a musical based on the movie that will be playing at the Ahmanson Theater in downtown Los Angeles this summer.
I hope they don't ever remake Clue, it would never be the same, especially without the chaotic energy of the wonderful Tim Curry!
Another great movie that is often underrated is Oscar starring Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Tim Curry and Chazz Palminteri. A 1991 comedy with the same chaotic comedic energy as Clue.
Oscar is hilarious and so worth the reaction! I wish more people knew about that movie.
I actually saw this! Years ago. I had a friend who recommended it, and so I watched and thought it was great. :) I don't think Marc has seen it though.
@@DavidvsFilm For some reason, it got panned by the critics. Guessing they couldn't get past the very idea of Stallone doing a comedy
I’m 42 and grew up watching this movie over and over. My family still quotes this heavily in every day conversation. I loved watching y’all react to this. It’s so damn funny.
Thank you so much!! Haha I could see that. Especially, “To make a long story short..” “Too late.” lol
@@DavidvsFilm Yep, that’s one of them. 😆
Yep. I do the “flames” bit daily.
This is such a fun movie! When it was in the movie theaters, each theater was given one of the three endings. So it ended differently depending on where you saw it. You didn't really know the other endings unless you watched it all three times.
That's so awesome! I would have loved that personally.
I have this movie entirely memorized. 🥰😂😂🥰 It never gets old, endlessly quotable, iconic!!
That’s all I need to know to realize that we would get along. 😁 Thanks so much for checking out the video- and commenting! :)
The interior of the house was a set on the Paramount lot. The exterior was partially the Max Bush mansion in Pasadena with set extensions painted to make it look bigger.
Movie magic! Shame though because I really would love to visit that house.
This movie is so damn iconic
You are right about that! One of the hardest edits because I didn’t want to cut anything.
I never understood why they added the "do" on the name of the game in Europe.
Edit: ok apparently it combines Clue with Ludo, Latin for "I play".
@@3DJapan A neat pun!
@@itzakpoelzig330 Never thought of that, but I love the “realistic” architectural implications 😁
My favorite interaction and quote:
The Chief: Good evening.
One of my favourites (it's impossible for me to pick one) is the "Why would he want to kill you in public?" bit. 🤣
I loved this too, @torontomame
Hecccckkkk yesssss!!!! I love this entire interaction just like you do. This is my beef with TH-cam and copyright though- I want to leave the whole scene in! I know I can't and I realize I'll most likely get dinged if I try to, so I have to pick and choose. I left in "I got news for you, it's already here" because I've actually been paraphrasing that quote at home since we watched this haha.
Marc (texting from work): "I ordered something from Amazon that should be delivered today."
Me: "I got news for you - it's already here."
I use it anytime someone says something that I would respond to with "Right!?"
Another one of favorites is the one that cracked you up:
Plumb: What are you afraid of, a fate worse than death?
Peacock: No, just death, isn't that enough?
It's just filled with so many great one-liners and quotes. It's a classic. It's actually recently (past twenty years or so) become the new Rocky Horror Picture Show in terms of live performances where the audience shout the lines of dialogue.
I couldn't agree more with David that it's usually better to take inspiration from a classic than to remake it. As an added bonus, it's free.
Boom! So true. Thank you my friend!
I collect the game and am obsessed with the movie. The og game Cluedo was created in the UK by Waddington Ltd in the 1940s. US bought the rights to sell the game and started selling it in 1949. The US is the only ones to change the name from Cluedo to Clue.
This is some excellent information- thank you so much!! Do you have one of the originals?
Clue is one of my favorite movies. I swear every single time I watch it I catch something I didn’t notice before.
Oh no! I know it was destroyed in a fire. That's a shame.
I love it too. And thank you so much for the trivia!! You know how much it warms my heart :)
I remember you telling me how great Victor/Victoria is, and I still plan to watch that one! I didn't realize that Lesley Ann Warren was in it too.
@@DavidvsFilm yup she is..and yw.
@@torontomameNumerous sets, props, and original film prints were unfortunately destroyed that way. Ever hear of the infamous Universal Studios fire that destroyed a ton of film history?
Miss Scarlett (Leslie Ann Warren) was also in Will & Grace. She plays Will’s Dad’s mistress, Tina
Ohhh yes, you’re totally right! ;)
Absolutely!! I can’t imagine anyone else playing this part as well as she did.
This never gets old!! The board game was based on Cluedo that was first made in 1949 in England. When the movie first came out, the movie only had one of the endings. All of them were available but depending on where you were in the country, you didn't know which ending you were going to get. They didn't have all three until they released it on video.
Thank you!!
Yes!! Exactly.
The way Eileen Brennan says “I am determined to enjoy myself” literally changed my life
I love that you highlighted this particular line! ♥️
So many of these lines live rent free in my head and it's all in the delivery. So many brilliant comedians at the top of their game in this move.
I think I saw Tim Curry in this first and then soon after saw him in Rocky Horror.
Happy New Year to you both!!!
This is such a fun movie. The comedy hits different and funnier the older I got, Tim Curry is such a legend
Same to you!!! And oh I could not agree more!! All I remember about watching it as a kid was the cool secret passageways and my mom having to explain what "mitts" were when Scarlett says, "Get your mitts off me." lol
My kid's HS did a stage production of this and it was a Ton of fun.
Love this movie. When wandsworth is running around the house explaining who the killer is, as a kid i would run around my house too
I love this comment- thank you! Totally something I would have done too haha.
This has been one of my favourite movies since I was a child (it came out when I was 6). Every time I watch it I think to myself, "Pay attention to who's in the kitchen when they discover the cook," and every time I forget because I get pulled into the plot. A great movie that always entertains.
I love how Mark giggles every time David says "...esp to returning subscribers....wassup" 😆
Every now and then I think about dropping the "wassup", but then, nah. ;)
nooo KEEP IT 😆@@DavidvsFilm
Eeeee thanks patrons Madeline Khan so good in everything she does direct line to my funny bone 🤣🤣✨️💗
All Eileen Brennan had to do was walk through a door and you knew something crazy funny was about to happen 🤣
Exactly!!! Yes yes yes. I love her.
My favorite movie! I watch it on my birthday every year! 1+2+1+1
That’s an awesome tradition!
Even if you are right it’s 1+1+2+2 not 1+2+1+1 😂 also that’s a great tradition!
This film was H I larious! My brother and I watched this again and again and again growing up. Madeleine Kahn was absolutely amazing in everything she did and I miss her!
Film: “I enjoy getting presents from strange men”
David: “like syphilis” 🤣🤣🤣
The set! Oh my lord! However, I would hate to clean it 😂
The endings were given out to different theatres and no one knew which the real one was until they finally released the VHS tape.
I’m so glad I got to watch this with you! The one liners from the two of you kill me ❤
Thank you my friend!! OMG you’re right about cleaning the set btw lol. Very true. Tough cleaning the Home Alone set or ANY Tarantino movie is probably worse lol
Marc looking like an absolute SNACK in this reaction.
So funny!
My family used to play Clue a lot when I was a kid and the movie is a classic. Mrs. White is my favorite lol
Totally agree, although I have to say that Mrs. Peacock made me laugh the most while I was watching. Madeline Kahn's deadpan performance as Mrs. White is just iconic though, and I can't imagine anyone else doing that part as well.
🎉🎉 I'm so glad Mark is watching this one too. Such an interesting and super fun movie
Yes!!! I agree :)
I saw this in the theater when it first came out. I went to three different theaters so I could see all 3 endings.
So all along, it was Marc and David, in the reaction studio, with the movie! I might’ve known. You two are always killing it with these videos.
Happy New Year! You’re certainly off to a great start.
Hahahaha look what you did there... THANK YOU so much :) I really appreciate your kind words, and HAPPY NEW YEAR to you too
When it was in the theaters, the showings were labeled A, B, or C and you would only get the one ending.
I didn't know that before now, and I think that's pretty cool actually. I would have loved that.
This movie is brilliant. I always loved how there was different endings. The version I watched would randomize the ending, so you didn't know which killer it on rewatch unless you watched for the clues.
Yes!!
As for me, obviously Scarlett as well! haha
@DavidvsFilm You're a real one, David. 😄
Yes! Unfortunately I read he had a stroke in 2012 I think it was. I believe he mostly does voice acting now.
@@DavidvsFilm Yeah that's right. I hope he's doing okay otherwise.
I must have watched this 100 times back in the day. I taped it off cable. Both Miss Scarlett and Mrs. White were influences on my personality.
Let's not lie, Peacock was too. 😂
Oh heck yes!!! You have always had good taste then. lol
Great reaction you two!
Thank u for watching this!! I haven't seen this movie in years & it just reminded me of why I adore Tim Curry! He's such an icon❤💞❤️
Hey friend!!! Thank you :) And OMG he was incredible in this! The memorization of all those lines, and the rapid fire delivery! so good.
Helloooooo!!! What?? I didn't even catch that! That's awesome.
@@DavidvsFilm I use to love playing the game. There also rumors that they going to do a remake movie for Clue.
Love this movie. So much fun and the one liners are very funny. Great cast also.

@@DavidvsFilm It was around the time I came out as gay, so the timing was pretty perfect for all of it
Ugh… this movie is *SO* fucking good!
So sorry I’m just now seeing this!! Loved the “pun intended” line lol. Thank you so much for commenting :)
Yes, the game came first. The game was invented in 1949! The movie, however, was set in 1954.
They made a ton of references to it in this movie... all the characters, locations and weapons from the game appear in the movie.
For some odd reason, the game is usually set in 1926.
I was 10 years old when this came out but saw it for the first time when I was 14 and I loved it then and love it even more now!!!
And the cast
My advice… react to the similarly oriented movie Murder By Death.
I had not heard of Murder By Death prior to reading the comments for Clue, but I’m really excited about it now! Even if not on the channel (though I’d like to include it), I want to give it a watch. Thanks again!!
Martin Mull(Colonel Mustard) is my grandpa’s cousin 😊
Woo hoo! Future movie! Lol
@DavidvsFilm Oh yeah, I forgot about, Murder On The Orient Express, I guess Clue is just sprinkled with homages to the Agatha Christie genre
"ok gurl" "he got it off his chest" idk why but that made me laugh super hard
haha hey- glad you enjoyed regardless ;)
For some reason I absolutely love Mr Greens final line of " I am going to go home and sleep with my wife" Showing that hes been in character the entire film
@3:42 This movie with its multiple endings shown here in the movie, as each movie was sent to theaters each with a different ending.
This movie is a gem and a true cult classic. Funny and absurd.
I loved this film for years and it makes for a good double feature with “Murder By Death”😎
My all time favorite movie!
This has been a top movie for me since I was a kid! Played the game all the time too! When I saw my favorite quote as your header, i had to watch it for both reasons. Hard to believe this was released the same year as I saw your reaction posted!
"The guy lived in a game of Clue."
-Knives Out.
Eileen Brennan was also in a similar film nine years prior to Clue, again with an all-star cast... Check out Murder By Death!
People probably mentioned this. But the reason there were three different endings is because when this released in theaters, they would give each theater a different version of the movie with one of the three endings. This way, nobody could spoil the ending for other people because there was a 2/3 chance that they would see a version of the movie with a different ending.
Easily one of my favorite movies of all time - fun to watch others enjoy it too
My favorite all time movie. All star cast of comedic actors/actresses.
I'm not sure how old the game of Clue is, but my family has the board game from DECADES ago. I would say ours is at least from the 70s and we still occasionally use it.
Thank you :)
Ahhhhahaha! I didn’t notice that. Hilarious.
I have seen Clue over hundred times! It is my favorite!!
You have no idea how much this comment warms my heart. Thank you!!
"Even if you were right, that would be one plus one plus two plus one, not one plus *two* plus one plus one."

"I'M NOT SHOUTING!!!"
Great reaction fellas.
Bill Murray from wish? Dude that’s Lee Ving, singer of the punk band Fear.
Aww no disrespect to him! I’m just talking. I’m sure he’s a cool dude and he was a great Mr. Boddy.
❤❤❤ coffee with Bailey's! Yumm. I had the same thing for NYE! Happy New Year to you both!
Hey there!!! Haha yaeh, that's a favorite around our house. It's like energy and relaxation at the same time lol. Happy New Year to you too!!
I think that's really cool. I would have loved that if I were seeing in the theaters.
I love how the characters keep getting stuck when trying to pass each other. Just like the game, where you can block other players in the hallways.
That is a great point! I had never thought about it that way. Thank you!
Christopher Lloyd made this movie and back to the future the same year! Two of the best movies ever!
This movie actually has more than one ending. People wouldn't know which ending they'd get, depending on what copy their theater received.
Top Ten best of all time for me. I was 13 when it came out and I saw it 50 times. Thanks for the reaction!!
Thank you so much, Katie!! And did it make you want a house with secret passages?? I totally want AT LEAST a bookcase door lol.
Murder by Death has already been suggested. I just want to point out that the actress that plays Mrs. Peacock plays in both movies.
Clever.
