Most of the actors in Clue are comedy legends and many of them had acted together before. Their smooth, 'on point' way of merging from one to the next was pure talent. Even the actress that played the cook was a comedic actress, more well known for being one of the nurses in MASH.
Please watch any of the first six "Road" pictures, with Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Lamour was a very by the script without deviation, while Bob and Bing would treat scripts like guidelines and improvise large sections causing Lamour to become lost in the script. As they produced more Road Pictures she did learn to add her own unscripted jabs at her costars. The seventh and final Road film lost much of the momentum and even feels like it went backwards because of some behind the scenes drama involving the replacement of Lamour as the lead actress. Another Bob Hope film to watch is called the "Ghost Breakers".
Clue is easily one of Tim Curry’s best and underrated roles. His comedic style is perfect for this movie. The slapstick comedy and one liners are all well used throughout the movie.

Clue is one of the best movies of all time and it never gets old. And after you see what an amazing ensemble film it is, you understand why the credits are just in alphabetical order. Everyone really gets to shine and everyone has quotable lines.
FYI, the 3 ends, in the theaters, the movie only played with one ending, and different theaters would show one of the 3 different ends, the joke being after people saw it, and talked about it with friends, they would only then find out they saw different ends, causing confusion.
Although I never saw CLUE I remember seeing the theater listings in the paper. They were marked "A" "B" and "C" So you could decide what ending you saw and then if you went back you could choose a different theater and a different ending.
I’m usually against remakes but i see how it brings great films to new generations, and I do think Ryan Reynolds understands comedy -i tend to trust his eye

I loved this film growing up. My mum recorded it on vhs for us and me and my sister watched it on repeat to the point where we could say every line from the entire film and re-enact it. Watching it as a grown up really gave me a new appreciation of it, of the cleverness and wittiness as well as the silliness of the whole thing. I adore this film and never, ever tire of watching it!

And to think this movie BOMBED when it first came out. Like it was a massive bomb. The script is a masterpiece of comedy in my opinion. It’s SO good and the casting was perfect too.

Noises Off is a great movie. The cast is amazing. Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, Marilu Henner, and others. Highly recommended for anyone who hasn't seen it.
One of my favorite movies of all time. I've watched it literally 1000+ times in the 35+ years since it came out. My parents got it on VHS as soon as it was available and I watched it all the time from then on. It's a comfort movie for me, I'll have it on in the background or while I go to sleep. And despite having watched it all those times. Every once in a while a new detail will come up that I missed before. And it's still funny every single time.
For me, this cast makes the movie. Michael McKean (Mr. Green) is one of the most underrated actors of all time. He's best known for Lenny from "Laverne and Shirley", "Spinal Tap", and more recently, the Witcher in "Good Omens". I first saw this movie in the late 80's, on a rented video tape, and was already a fan of Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd and Madeline Khan at that time. Even back then, the "french maid" was a cliche, so I'm not sure where that originated, unless it's just a stereotype of british mansions to have a french maid.
gotta add Michael McKean was also the State Trooper in Planes, Trains, etc that Shan just watched a little while ago too. I think I liked him best on Martin Short's Jimminy Glick show but that might only be because I've seen Spinal Tap and all the Chris Guest flics about 65 million times each. helluva imdb huh..... the man's got a resume with everyone's name on it.
I would totally do a reading for this. Shanelle, I saw this as a kid. After revisiting as an adult, I have come to the point where I now watch it multiple times a year EVERY year. It's just too easy to sit down to. Especially around Halloween.
We did this years ago. We copied the costumes down to the fabrics and accessories (I was Mrs. Peacock/Eileen Brennan). We had "Cantonese" food delivered and served it fancy dinner party style. Our friends were renting a Victorian brownstone townhouse at the time, so we used their place and hid clues and weapons in all of the rooms and had an all night scavenger hunt. Later we went to a nearby bar in our costumes and got strange looks from all the patrons.
Murder games where apparently commonly played in earlier times. In Harpo Marx's book he talks about how he played a game like that with his Algonquin buddies in either the 20's or the 30's. He was the murderer and wrote 'You're dead.' on the toilets-paper roll in the least used bathroom of the mansion. Took the one playing the detective hours to find the victim, they had to delay dinner for it. Not sure anymore who the victim was, but she didn't mind it. She spend the time on the bathroom floor plotting out her next novel. Once found however, they instantly knew Harpo did it since he had several spelling errors in writing those two words and he was the only non-writer of the group and also an elementary school drop out.
I always assumed when Tim Curry says to Madeline Kahn, “You were jealous that your husband was shtupping Yvette,” that it was a callback to her role as Lilly Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles.
Have you ever seen Blazing Saddles? Madeline Kahn was in that, and she nailed it. She used to do all sorts of Mel Brooks films, and she kicks ass in all of them. She's hilarious!

My family loved "who-dunnits" so I grew up loving this film from a young age, It's a perfect rainy day film. Great analysis, must have seen this film hundreds of times and never noticed the broken chandelier not being present in later shots.

As a child of the 60s and 70s, Clue was one of our favorite board games. When the movie came out, we were excited, and the gimmick of different endings in different theaters just added to the excitement. Tim Curry was outstanding, as was the rest of the cast. Thanks for this reaction.

1976's Murder By Death has a similar vibe to this, although it's sending up specific murder mystery detectives - Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Nick and Nora Charles, Sam Spade, and Charlie Chan. Beware, though, because it's definitely a product of its time. The Charlie Chan analogue, Sidney Wang, is played by Peter Sellers in yellowface.
The thing with the endings you need to remember is that when this was released, they had three different prints that were each distributed to different theatres, often in the same city. So depending on which theatre you or your friends went to, you each might think someone else did it. When they did the home video release is when they combined them all.
Yes. And It also got you to go back and see it three times because at the time, video release took FOREVER. They called it "Clue A" "Clue B" and "Clue C" I believe. There's also a really fun farce that I saw around this time (though I think it was older) called "Murder by Death" which was a play on many famous literary detectives. Great cast.
53 yr old here so I've seen LOTS of movies ever since I was fascinated by the yearly run of The Wizard Of Oz on tv. During this pandemic, I've gotten into movie and series reactions on TH-cam. This is honestly one of the greatest movies ever made. 🥰 I would LOVE to play Mrs. White in a reading of this! I quote her "I hated her, SOOooo much..." line ALL the time. Also have to agree with everyone saying watch Young Frankenstein! Trivia: this was one of the first videos priced to own ($20) at a time when most were priced for video stores to buy and rent out ($100+). As a result, this was widely purchased by people who hadn't bothered to see it in theaters, becoming a cult classic and helping change how movies are sold.
I remember my video rental store (where I later worked) having a catalog of their movies and the prices next to them all were over $100. I guess they just used pages from the catalog they themselves bought from.

My local video store would make deals with customers where they would get extra copies to rent and, after 3 months, they would sell the extra copies for $35. That's what I paid for my copy. A year later, new copies were selling for $20. Oh, well. It was a thrill to own it at the time. 😊

(why do we remember this stuff better than our phone #'s now?) our city's first video store would sell for $100-$150+ and buy back at about half price..... my first video was Psycho on Beta..... watched it half a dozen times, and had seen it before on TV..... traded it for 2001:A Space Odyssey.... and kept that one, still have it. I never bought a copy of Clue but I did see it at a Drive-In and I recall seeing all 3 endings, maybe because it was close to, or maybe after, video release time when we saw it.

I loved watching your first watch of Clue. I was a kid when this movie was released, and I was already a fan of the board game. We did see it in the cinema, and we got the "real" ending. When it was released on VHS tape, I had my mom rent it out from the video store so much that she decided to buy me a copy (and it was my first store-bought VHS movie), and this was when a brand new VHS movie cost $60 (at that time, people rented movies, but did not really buy them). My brother and I memorized the entire script from start to finish (and we can probably still recite it by heart even now), and we would quote it all the time. At the time, I never understood why the critics did not like the film (and I still don't). As you mentioned, the script is impeccable and the cast just knocks it out of the park with their amazing skills in comedy. Madeline Khan and Leslie Ann Warren were always my favorites, but they all did so amazing with this film. I am glad that people continue to respond well to this film.
I've had some friends say that once you see Back To The Future, you can't watch CL in anything else without just seeing him as Doc Brown. I had that same experience with CL, except seeing him as Jim Ignatowski.

I love the subtly in the full scene at 7:13 where Mrs Peacock nodded along when agreeing with a theory, then immediately starts shaking her head when someone debunked it. Just blindly going along with anything someone says. So perfect for her character.

Just showed this movie to my granddaughters last weekend. When it first started I got the eye rolls whinnying and sighs. Then came the wired faces, with the exclamation that, “these people are crazy.” Follow by giggles, and falling over laughter. Ending with best movie ever, until the youngest was introduced to Narnia for the first time.
I saw this in '85. One of my favorites. Please check out "Johnny Dangerously" from 1984. (His name is an adverb and Marilu Henner has got "those". He likes "those").
Fun fact. Most of the cast was reunited on a episode of (2006) Mystery Comedy “Psych”. Spoofing this movie, during the 7th or 8th season. Also with an alternate ending episode.
If you love Tim Curry, than 1985's Legend is for you! He plays the Iconic Lord of Darkness. He is phenomenal and the movie is a classic. Fantasy SciFi awesomeness.
It's one of the few movies that I never get tired. To me Ms. White has the best lines, her line "husbands should be like tissues, soft and disposable" is my favorite.
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this or not, but when this was in theaters, you only saw a single ending as opposed to all of the different scenarios. You had to go see the movie three times in order to see all three endings. Of course, on rental tapes and DVD's you get to see all of the endings.
The singing telegram girl was the member of the GO GO's "Jane:" that left the group. She was also in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. She played Joan of Arc. And yes she is very cute.
Legit one of my favorite movies ever. It’s sooooo fun, the cast is incredible, the writing is stellar, and it’s a genuinely great whodunnit. Also based off a board game, it’s just so great.
This is my favorite movie of all time. I must have watched this in excess if 100 times over my life. I didn't get to see it in theaters when it came out (because I was like 4 years old) but my father bought it for me on VHS when I was a little older. I remember wanting it because I loved the board game so much. I did eventually get to see it on the big screen just a year or so ago when a small local theater near me was doing their retro movie BYOB night. Talk about a great time! I've never seen an audience so engaged with a film before. Laughing. Quoting lines the whole time. It was an amazing experience, just like this flick!

The first time I saw Clue, my aunt was babysitting me and brought her VHS copy over (this was early 90's) and I LOVED IT. So I asked her to bring it over every time she came.

All the actors in this film are brilliant; some were bigger than others, but at the time they were all pretty much known for their amazing ability to deliver a line and they all had excellent comedic timing. It was well written and well cast.
Madeiline Khan's 'Mrs White', attempting to describe her hatred of Yvette with the 'flames' description is comedy genius. 'Clue' remains an absolute favourite of mine. For an older vibe, similar scenario and clever writing, consider watching Robert Moore's 'Murder by Death' (1976}. It has a screenplay by Neil Simon and again stars Eileen Brennan (Mrs Peacock). It has a fantastic cast with a great premise in regards to the characters.

Only watched it a few years ago myself, I was born in 1985 and kind of found it as I started to look more and more at older movies because I don't feel much good is still released these days, too often it follows the same formula. But I really like Clue, the writing is very clever and everyone gives a great performance, I bet they had a lot of fun making the movie. I couldn't stop laughing at that singing telegram, it always gets me. Legend was made the same year, it's kind of crazy thinking this is how Tim Curry looked like at the time, not intimidating at all and so very different in Legend which I believe is his greatest performance. He was very uncomfortable under all the prosthetics yet acts so casually charming, and plays the definitive version of a devil. Intelligent, cunning, seductive, charming. And scary when he needs to be. Madeline Kahn was an amazing comedic actress, one of the funniest women I've seen for sure, died way too young sadly enough. I can recommend watching Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles, she has good and very different parts in both. Young Frankenstein I think you'll love for sure, it is this beautiful homage to classic horror movies, shot in the same way too, it is a homage and parody in one and also with a great ensemble cast. Blazing Saddles is still really great at showing how ridiculous racism is, Cleavon Little's stare as dumb racists say their piece says it all. And I love how he turns their own idiocy against them. He had a talent for comedy while he was a more serious actor in his other roles. Gene Wilder is also great as his sidekick here, never overshadowing him and Madeline Kahn has a great scene as a worldweary burlesque dancer.
Stumbled upon this in my recommended videos...love this! Clue is a favorite (a friend is actually making a documentary about the flick). In my opinion it's an absolute master class in comedy.
i saw this in the theater in 85, with the Mrs. Peacock ending. i grew up playing the board game with my family, and i remember i liked the movie, but at the time, wasn't super impressed with it. several years ago, i bought the DVD and now i've watched it many times. i like to watch it with all three endings - my favorite being the one where they all did it. now that i'm older i can really appreciate the script and the wonderful comedic timing of the actors, and i just love how silly it all is. :)
When I was a kid in the late 80s my local fox station had a Sunday afternoon movie. Clue was shown frequently for that, and I watched it so many times that I still know where they put a lot of the commercial breaks.

Noises Off doesn't get as much love as it deserves. Apparently critics aren't fond of it, but it is solid, IMO.
One of my favorite movies of all time. I've watched it literally 1000+ times in the 35+ years since it came out. My parents got it on VHS as soon as it was available and I watched it all the time from then on. It's a comfort movie for me, I'll have it on in the background or while I go to sleep. And despite having watched it all those times. Every once in a while a new detail will come up that I missed before. And it's still funny every single time.
For me, this cast makes the movie. Michael McKean (Mr. Green) is one of the most underrated actors of all time. He's best known for Lenny from "Laverne and Shirley", "Spinal Tap", and more recently, the Witcher in "Good Omens". I first saw this movie in the late 80's, on a rented video tape, and was already a fan of Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd and Madeline Khan at that time. Even back then, the "french maid" was a cliche, so I'm not sure where that originated, unless it's just a stereotype of british mansions to have a french maid.

We did this years ago. We copied the costumes down to the fabrics and accessories (I was Mrs. Peacock/Eileen Brennan). We had "Cantonese" food delivered and served it fancy dinner party style. Our friends were renting a Victorian brownstone townhouse at the time, so we used their place and hid clues and weapons in all of the rooms and had an all night scavenger hunt. Later we went to a nearby bar in our costumes and got strange looks from all the patrons.
Murder games where apparently commonly played in earlier times. In Harpo Marx's book he talks about how he played a game like that with his Algonquin buddies in either the 20's or the 30's.
He was the murderer and wrote 'You're dead.' on the toilets-paper roll in the least used bathroom of the mansion.
Took the one playing the detective hours to find the victim, they had to delay dinner for it.
Not sure anymore who the victim was, but she didn't mind it. She spend the time on the bathroom floor plotting out her next novel.
Once found however, they instantly knew Harpo did it since he had several spelling errors in writing those two words and he was the only non-writer of the group and also an elementary school drop out.
I always assumed when Tim Curry says to Madeline Kahn, “You were jealous that your husband was shtupping Yvette,” that it was a callback to her role as Lilly Von Shtupp in Blazing Saddles.
Well 'shtupp" is the Yiddish word for 'fuck' (as in to have sex), so it's also a way around censors.
Have you ever seen Blazing Saddles? Madeline Kahn was in that, and she nailed it. She used to do all sorts of Mel Brooks films, and she kicks ass in all of them. She's hilarious!

My family loved "who-dunnits" so I grew up loving this film from a young age, It's a perfect rainy day film. Great analysis, must have seen this film hundreds of times and never noticed the broken chandelier not being present in later shots.

As a child of the 60s and 70s, Clue was one of our favorite board games. When the movie came out, we were excited, and the gimmick of different endings in different theaters just added to the excitement. Tim Curry was outstanding, as was the rest of the cast. Thanks for this reaction.

1976's Murder By Death has a similar vibe to this, although it's sending up specific murder mystery detectives - Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Nick and Nora Charles, Sam Spade, and Charlie Chan.
Beware, though, because it's definitely a product of its time. The Charlie Chan analogue, Sidney Wang, is played by Peter Sellers in yellowface.
Yeah, they made that movie when people had more of a sense of humour. The Wang character was a send up of white people playing chinese characters.
Literally I grew up on this film. Literally. This was my favorite movie growing up and it holds up over time.
The thing with the endings you need to remember is that when this was released, they had three different prints that were each distributed to different theatres, often in the same city. So depending on which theatre you or your friends went to, you each might think someone else did it.
When they did the home video release is when they combined them all.
Yes. And It also got you to go back and see it three times because at the time, video release took FOREVER. They called it "Clue A" "Clue B" and "Clue C" I believe. There's also a really fun farce that I saw around this time (though I think it was older) called "Murder by Death" which was a play on many famous literary detectives. Great cast.

53 yr old here so I've seen LOTS of movies ever since I was fascinated by the yearly run of The Wizard Of Oz on tv. During this pandemic, I've gotten into movie and series reactions on TH-cam. I had never come upon your reactions before and was surprised at how well done they are and how informed. Not sure why you don't have a higher number of subscribers. Anyways, love Clue! Trivia: this was one of the first videos priced to own ($20) at a time when most were priced for video stores to buy and rent out ($100+). As a result, this was widely purchased by people who hadn't bothered to see it in theaters, becoming a cult classic and helping change how movies are sold.
I remember my video rental store (where I later worked) having a catalog of their movies and the prices next to them all were over $100. I guess they just used pages from the catalog they themselves bought from.
The VHS was $79.95, priced for rental. It was re-released a while later at the $19.95 price point.

My local video store would make deals with customers where they would get extra copies to rent and, after 3 months, they would sell the extra copies for $35. That's what I paid for my copy. A year later, new copies were selling for $20. Oh, well. It was a thrill to own it at the time. 😊

I never bought a copy of Clue but I did see it at a Drive-In and I recall seeing all 3 endings, maybe because it was close to, or maybe after, video release time when we saw it.
I loved Clue. I remember watching it on VHS not long after it came out when I was a kid. it being 35 years old now makes me feel even older because I remember when Cary Grant was an old actor and now Tim Curry is an old actor :(

I loved watching your first watch of Clue. I was a kid when this movie was released, and I was already a fan of the board game. We did see it in the cinema, and we got the "real" ending. When it was released on VHS tape, I had my mom rent it out from the video store so much that she decided to buy me a copy (and it was my first store-bought VHS movie), and this was when a brand new VHS movie cost $60 (at that time, people rented movies, but did not really buy them). My brother and I memorized the entire script from start to finish (and we can probably still recite it by heart even now), and we would quote it all the time. At the time, I never understood why the critics did not like the film (and I still don't). As you mentioned, the script is impeccable and the cast just knocks it out of the park with their amazing skills in comedy. Madeline Khan and Leslie Ann Warren were always my favorites, but they all did so amazing with this film. I am glad that people continue to respond well to this film.
I've had some friends say that once you see Back To The Future, you can't watch CL in anything else without just seeing him as Doc Brown. I had that same experience with CL, except seeing him as Jim Ignatowski.

I love the subtly in the full scene at 7:13 where Mrs Peacock nodded along when agreeing with a theory, then immediately starts shaking her head when someone debunked it. Just blindly going along with anything someone says. So perfect for her character.
I LOVE this movie! First saw it on tv when I was a kid and we recorded it in the late 80s. Every time we watched it and it ended me and my sister would look at each other and i would say ‘again?’ And she’s reply with ‘again’. We’d rewind it and watch it again, and again lol

Just showed this movie to my granddaughters last weekend. When it first started I got the eye rolls whinnying and sighs. Then came the wired faces, with the exclamation that, “these people are crazy.” Follow by giggles, and falling over laughter. Ending with best movie ever, until the youngest was introduced to Narnia for the first time.

If you love Tim Curry, than 1985's Legend is for you! He plays the Iconic Lord of Darkness. He is phenomenal and the movie is a classic. Fantasy SciFi awesomeness.
It's one of the few movies that I never get tired. To me Ms. White has the best lines, her line "husbands should be like tissues, soft and disposable" is my favorite.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this or not, but when this was in theaters, you only saw a single ending as opposed to all of the different scenarios. You had to go see the movie three times in order to see all three endings. Of course, on rental tapes and DVD's you get to see all of the endings.

This is my favorite movie of all time. I must have watched this in excess if 100 times over my life. I didn't get to see it in theaters when it came out (because I was like 4 years old) but my father bought it for me on VHS when I was a little older. I remember wanting it because I loved the board game so much. I did eventually get to see it on the big screen just a year or so ago when a small local theater near me was doing their retro movie BYOB night. Talk about a great time! I've never seen an audience so engaged with a film before. Laughing. Quoting lines the whole time. It was an amazing experience, just like this flick!

The first time I saw Clue, my aunt was babysitting me and brought her VHS copy over (this was early 90's) and I LOVED IT. So I asked her to bring it over every time she came.

All the actors in this film are brilliant; some were bigger than others, but at the time they were all pretty much known for their amazing ability to deliver a line and they all had excellent comedic timing. It was well written and well cast.

Madeiline Khan's 'Mrs White', attempting to describe her hatred of Yvette with the 'flames' description is comedy genius. 'Clue' remains an absolute favourite of mine.
For an older vibe, similar scenario and clever writing, consider watching Robert Moore's 'Murder by Death' (1976}. It has a screenplay by Neil Simon and again stars Eileen Brennan (Mrs Peacock). It has a fantastic cast with a great premise in regards to the characters.
Murder By Death is such a fun movie. Pairs very nicely with Clue.

Only watched it a few years ago myself, I was born in 1985 and kind of found it as I started to look more and more at older movies because I don't feel much good is still released these days, too often it follows the same formula.
But I really like Clue, the writing is very clever and everyone gives a great performance, I bet they had a lot of fun making the movie. I couldn't stop laughing at that singing telegram, it always gets me.
Legend was made the same year, it's kind of crazy thinking this is how Tim Curry looked like at the time, not intimidating at all and so very different in Legend which I believe is his greatest performance. He was very uncomfortable under all the prosthetics yet acts so casually charming, and plays the definitive version of a devil. Intelligent, cunning, seductive, charming. And scary when he needs to be.
Madeline Kahn was an amazing comedic actress, one of the funniest women I've seen for sure, died way too young sadly enough. I can recommend watching Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles, she has good and very different parts in both.
Young Frankenstein I think you'll love for sure, it is this beautiful homage to classic horror movies, shot in the same way too, it is a homage and parody in one and also with a great ensemble cast.
Blazing Saddles is still really great at showing how ridiculous racism is, Cleavon Little's stare as dumb racists say their piece says it all. And I love how he turns their own idiocy against them. He had a talent for comedy while he was a more serious actor in his other roles.
Gene Wilder is also great as his sidekick here, never overshadowing him and Madeline Kahn has a great scene as a worldweary burlesque dancer.

Stumbled upon this in my recommended videos...love this! Clue is a favorite (a friend is actually making a documentary about the flick). In my opinion it's an absolute master class in comedy.

i saw this in the theater in 85, with the Mrs. Peacock ending. i grew up playing the board game with my family, and i remember i liked the movie, but at the time, wasn't super impressed with it. several years ago, i bought the DVD and now i've watched it many times. i like to watch it with all three endings - my favorite being the one where they all did it. now that i'm older i can really appreciate the script and the wonderful comedic timing of the actors, and i just love how silly it all is. :)
When I was a kid in the late 80s my local fox station had a Sunday afternoon movie. Clue was shown frequently for that, and I watched it so many times that I still know where they put a lot of the commercial breaks.
