I dressed up as Hi one year for a Halloween party. Short sleeve button down over a wife beater, toy gun tucked into my waistband, panty on my head, and a pack of Huggies hiding an MP3 player with the theme song on repeat. Only three people got the reference. 😂

Yeah, but they were the three coolest people at the party! How many people do you think saw the movie in the theatres when it came out? I did, and I doubt there was more than 10-15 people in the whole joint. Even less when I went to see "Blood Simple". In the 80s, there were only about two or three cool people per town! Definitely not some "golden period" where everyone was grooving to great work. Well, what do you expect "with that sonofabitch Reagan in the White House....." 🤣 The beginning of the head-up-the-ass, sell-out-the-future era.
@@Kainlarsen I’m built more like 80s Nicolas Cage than Tex Cobb, and Hi’s getup was a helluva lot easier than Leonard Smalls’ would’ve been.
From "You sonofab!tch!" to "Everything's changed!!!", the yodelling chase might be one of the funniest sequences put to film. Everything about it just keeps getting crazier until the craziness piles up and HI escapes unharmed.
One of the best chase scenes in cinema history.

Scraping the knuckles on the textured ceiling is so hysterically specific that so many people can relate.
One of, if not my favourite detail in the film. You can almost feel it.
I've done it a lot but worse, when I was 10-11 we lived in this apartment and at some point in this places history some real evil or real stupid person decided to do that to all the walls you never really think about how much you touch walls in your life... Until you get reminded every time

Tex Cobb was a heavyweight boxer who once fought for the world heavyweight title (Thanksgiving 1983). It was a miserable fight. The champion, Larry Holmes, smacked him around for 15 rounds (then the length of a world title fight; it was reduced to 12 rounds because too many fighters were getting killed after the 12th round). Cobb apparently couldn't be knocked out. He told an interviewer, "The ability to take a punch is a gift, darlin'." He's quite intelligent and extremely funny in a dry way. He once fought Earnie Shavers, acknowledged to be the hardest puncher ever. Tex won, but he said, "When he lays leather to you, the effect is just astonishin'."
A prominent sportscaster of the time, Howard Cosell, called the fight. He spoke of how disgusted he was even during the fight. The next day, he announced he would never call a fight again, and he never did. He had become well-known by calling Muhammad Ali's bouts.
Tex later became a kickboxer, which you can see when he beats up H.I.
Okay, then.
Did some searching. Apparently the couple watched only 1 other movie with him in cast. Naked Gun 33⅓.
Before he went into Pro Boxing, Tex was World Heavyweight Kickbox Champion. Before the Holmes fight Johnny Carson had him on the show, and said he must be very dedicated and hardworking to be a prizefighter at that level. Randy replied, "I'm the laziest person I know. I'll fight anybody in the world to keep from getting a regular job!" and Johnny about fell out laughing so hard. Tex had the gristle removed from his nose when he was a kickboxer so it wouldn't break - and that was a big reason he could take a punch so well.

Neat little point: when the brothers show up and HI wakes up, HI mutters 'Merry Christmas.' At the end of the movie, he's dreaming of a family dinner, at Christmas. Which means he's been having that dream throughout the movie.
I never noticed until now.
To me, it was one of the best comedies of the 80s. The Biker, Gale & his brother, & Glen's family were all out of control cartoon characters. I think that Nathan Jr. captivated the convicts because they also yearned for a family-life whether they knew or not. Of course, Ed was just heartbroken about being barren and could think of nothing else except getting a baby to raise. I'm glad he wasn't taken by Glen & Dottie based on the behavior of their brats! The whole Unpainted Arizona story element was just humorous to me by nature (I had bought furniture like that in the past here in Texas). It's a top tier Coen Brothers movie to me.
Raising Arizona is basically a live action Loony Tune. The extreme situations & characters, all the shooting & explosions yet no one is really hurt until the bad guy is destroyed, the chase scene & the humorous one liners in reaction to the absurdity. H.I. is Bugs Bunny, Lenny Smalls is the Tasmanian Devil, Ed is Granny & the baby is Tweety.
I'll admit to judging reactors by whether or not they leave in the "Unless round is funny" line.

I lived in Arizona when this movie came out, and we did have that exact couch
I grew up in Tempe and got to see them filming parts of the chase scene; the exterior Safeway was just down the street and the railroad track jump was in front of where my mom worked. I think I was thirteen? When it hit cable I watched it daily on that same ugly couch, as everyone's aunt or grandma who smoked too much had the entire set.
That having been said, I am an Arizona native and "Well okay then!" IS a part of my vocabulary as a result, life now imitating art.
And no, we don't sound a thing like that, Emily.

@@tacticaldesigns8794 IIRC, the rear exterior shots and a few of the interior were from the Safeway on Broadway & Rural. They had just emptied (or were about to empty?) the store for the roof replacement and remodel, so they had the lot for a few nights.
Nathan Arizona Sr was played by Trey Wilson, who also played the manager of the Durham Bulls in Bull Durham, IMO the greatest baseball movie ever and an absolute must for the channel.
I really like that actor. Sadly, I think he passed away suddenly not long after this??

Coen Bros are such creative filmmakers...whether it's more comedic or more dramatic, they just seem to have so much skill at bringing stories about characters with...unique personalities, makes their films always entertaining.

This film has been a staple of mine since it came out. I knew exactly what I was getting into when you two decided to do this film. I am absolutely living vicariously through Matthew since he knows exactly what’s coming. This film was made for this channel.
I was 16 when this movie came out. And, I live about a mile and a half from the convenience store that was robbed in this movie!
All of my friends and I used to stop there in the morning on the first day of school before we went dove hunting.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Along with The Big Lebowski, probably tied for the movie I’ve seen the most times. And, like Lebowski, it’s always fun to watch this movie with somebody who has never seen it before.
Oh...This is by far my favorite of these guys movies. It's just non-stop goofiness and quotes. The greatest gif ever is Ed punching HI. Thank you internet for that.
You're right, there's nothing wrong with improv when the outcome is gold. However, it eats up time like a thief, and if a person thinks they don't have to listen to the director it goes straight downhill...
Or if the director let's them babble for too long for the sake of making it funny through being awkward instead of actually funny("Ghostbusters:Answer the Call", etc;)

This was one of my mom's and my fave movies for several months when it hit the cable channels. we both would laugh till our eyes watered.
This is one of my favorite movies ever. The music track is called "Way out there" and is a remake of an old cowboy song from 1934. My favorite verson is the techno one thats playing in the grocery store 😊

Yep, my grandma had that couch when I was growing up! As far as the accent, I don’t think it represents how people from Arizona speak. At least those people I know from there. And I’m from roughly nearby (Colorado). And I have also noticed movies and tv shows set in Colorado often also have characters speak with Southern accents (though maybe not as exaggerated as this movie). I figured it was one of those things where Hollywood seems to have this idea that everyone not from California or the Northeast speaks with Southern accents. Especially if they live in rural areas.
I saw this when I was 13 in 87. I’ve been using so many quotes from this movie ever since.

The Coens were really intent on working with Holly Hunter after a scheduling conflict prevented her from being the lead in _Blood Simple_ . But she suggested her roommate Frances McDormand, so at least Joel got a wife out of the deal, as well as his frequent leading lady.

One of the most quotable movies ever.
It's really difficult to explain what a revelation this film was at the time. The magic realism was, for some of us, something we'd never seen or really experienced before, at least in an American film. I'm tickled Emily enjoyed it too.
This is my favorite Coen Bros. film, so funny. Love the dialogue. I also recommend "The Hudsucker Proxy".
Randall Tex Cobb was a boxer before he was an actor. He once went 15 rounds in a championship match with Larry Holmes and 2 of the 3 judges scored Cobb losing all 15 of them without being knocked down. He later explained his strategy on The Tonight Show, the video is on You Tube, it's hilarious.
I just remembered him from "Uncommon Valor" in 83. That movie had some tough subject matter but was full of talent.

I never thought about it before, but I think Greg Garcia was inspired at least a little by this film when he came up with My Name is Earl...because the similarities of Earl and Hi are remarkable, both characters were bad petty criminals with good hearts...and the staches, I mean, come on. haha.
For an even younger John Goodman, watch Revenge of the Nerds. There are a couple classic scenes that are extremely "Me, too" nowadays but it's still a must see!

Raising Arizona is a great 80s comedy. It has the right amount of quirky and odd. The little details that are in the background (like the sound fx, but also the side characters and even the props) give it more depth than the usual stories. For me it's an 8.5.
As a suggestion for another fun movie to watch: I suggest "Nothing to lose" with Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins.
Somehow it gives me similar vibes to "Raising Arizona".

This movie ruled my life as a child.
I loved this video. I took a summer class in college called Films of the Coen brothers. It was awesome. I would defintely recommend "Miller's Crossing." I has a completely diferent feel from any of their other movies. Also, "The Hudsucker Proxy" is a ton of fun and, coincidentally does have Bruce Cambell.

This is one of my favorite 80s comedy movies! The biker dude used to scared me as a kid, This movie is super funny the part when the biker dude was struggles to remove the grenades then he got blown away it was hilarious. 😂😂

The Cinematographer/Director of Photography is Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the two live action Addams Family movies and the first three Men in Black movies, amongst other films.
This is my favorite comedy movie. I showed it to my mom and she almost had a heart attack, laughing. Literally had to take a nitro pill.
Back when this movie came out and I was in high school, I actually worked in the movie theater when this was showing. I remember this woman storming out of the theater in tears. She demanded to talk to the manager, and when she did, she wanted to know how she could be showing such a horribly violent movie in her cinema!
Woman: “I demand a refund!”
Manager: “Okay then.”
"GODDAMMIT! YA NEVER LEAVE A MAN BE-HIIIIND!"

I have a feeling the woodpecker tattoo shared by Hi and Leonard Smalls shows that they are actually brothers.
There are other ideas suggesting the tattoo is related to a prison gang, but I don't see why the Coen brothers would go down a dark path with this character.
Hi's bed-head is the best in cinematic history.
I saw this back when it came out and is still one of my favorite movies. And when the situation warrants (and sometimes other times), I still say, "Turn to tha riiiight."

❤This one never gets old....like an early version of Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Another great quirky Nick Cage 80s film is Honeymoon In Vegas. Holly Hunter in Broadcast News 1987 is a fantastic movie and Holly won the Oscar👍👍👍👍👍
One fan theory I heard long ago was that Smalls was actually a version of Nathan Jr. grown up. Which explains the baby shoes and the same tattoo as HI had which we saw for the briefest of moments before he was blown up by the grenade. This is also supported by the beginning of the film he dreams of Smalls and at the end he dreams of Nathan Jr's future. Smalls was basically who he would have become if he remained with HI and Ed as his parents. Again, just a fan theory, but I rather like that.

There's a legend that Sam Raimi and the Coen Brothers were having a "Dolly-off" with this movie and Evil Dead 2. Evil Dead included such tricks as a camera chasing Bruce Campbell through a forest and through a tree prop that split in half to imitate the power of the Deadites. Therefore, Hi's dream, which included the camera "jumping" over a tricycle, up a ladder and into the woman's mouth can be considered the Coen's reply.

One is RAISING ARIZONA.
The other is every other Coen Brothers movie.
My favorite Coen Brothers movie is the criminally underrated "Miller's Crossing." It's actually my favorite movie of all time.
But I do love this movie, Hudsucker Proxy and The Big Lebowski.

I was born and raised in Washington, DC. In the 80s, when I was in high school, I worked for Circle Theaters, a local movie house chain, which was owned and run by Jim and Ted Pedas. They decided they wanted to go into the movie business and this was the first movie they produced. Their production company was called Circle Films.
Randall "Tex" Cobb fought in the last boxing match I ever saw in my life. I used to watch the occasional bout back when Ali was active, and Larry Holmes was the champ after Ali. Larry beat Tex Cobb like that white boy owed him money for 15 rounds. He never knocked Tex off of his feet, but after seven or eight rounds Tex was so rattled he couldn't even throw a punch, he just stood there and got beat on. It was the most brutal display I have ever witnessed, and I watched it to the end just to make sure Larry didn't kill him. I turned off the T.V. vowing to never watch another bout of boxing and I never have.
Many of the early pioneers in the Arizona Territory were sons of the Confederacy, so the colloquialisms and accents of their descendants tended to reflect those of Texas, Georgia, etc. Randall 'Tex' Cobb played Leonard Smalls (The Warthog from Hell). He had been the Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion of The World before he went into acting. This is my favorite Nick Cage film.
This, Airplane!, and National Lampoon's Vacation are my top 3 comedies of all time. No matter how many times I watch these, they're ALWAYS funny, everytime, all the time, just as much as the first time I saw them. That's a rare thing in comedies. Ya know, the more you see/hear a joke, the less funny it gets. But Raising Arizona and those others never get old, the comedy always hits the mark.
You left out the best line, "I think I got the best one."
This was my intro to the Coen Brothers and it remains my favorite of theirs. The quiet surrealist note in there is just right up my alley.
For the record, as someone who (tragically) grew up there, that is NOT how most people talk in Tempe, Arizonia.
I don't know if you already knew this but Nicolas Cage's hair style was the coen brothers' idea. They gave him a "Wiley Coyote" hair style.😂 It's consistent throughout the movie.
A great double feature is "Raising Arizona" and "No Country for Old Men" if you consider Smalls as Anton Sugar and the baby as the money.

I gave Matt a pass for his Big Lebowski take but 6 for Raising Arizona is infuriating😡. Saw this as a kid when it first came out and it definitely changed the way I look at movies…so I have a specially affinity for it. I place this at 2 (behind Fargo) on my Cohen’s best of list.

There was a small budget, and so it explains and if you notice at the end when hi talks about a couple and their children visiting an elderly couple. The elderly couple is hi and ed. But the parents of the kids visiting them are glen and dot.
Saw this sometime in 1990 or 1991, and the bounty hunter scared the ever living crap out of me. This is such a beautiful story
I love this movie so much! Holly Hunter and Nick Cage as well as the rest of the cast were so funny. I still say “turn to the right!” randomly sometimes. There are so many fun phrases and words to say from this film.
Every time I watch this, I play the scene where the brothers are escaping from their tunnel in reverse so it looks like, especially with the screaming, that the ground is sucking them in. I don't know why, but it makes me giggle nonstop.
