I think the biggest thing as a beginner is just to make sure you use enjoying it. There’s no point in doing it if you’re not enjoying it. And when you’re a little bit down the line and not enjoying it anymore, change it up! Change you’re terrain, change your schedule, change something to make it new and exciting again!
One of my biggest mistakes as a newbie runner was to join a rather competitive running club - the training was much too demanding for me, and it was all a bit too serious. Having dropped out I then found an all-ability and very social running group which keeps me motivated and is also fun. So while I totally agree with you about joining a club, I'd advise beginner runners to look for the type of group which suits their physical ability and will make running fun.
Finding the right club is so important! When I came to try out my running club and ended up having a really long discussion about cake and then we had tea and biscuits after the run, I knew it was the right one 😂
Very true - I actually had this experience the other way round, where I started with a social club, then my ability and wants outgrew what I was getting there, and I've now been a member of my club for a few years!
One thing I learnt, was to buy running clothing. Once I swapped to a top that wicked the sweat away, it was so much better. Also, I didn't run in shorts for the longest time as I started in winter. But when I swapped, it kept my body temp lower and my heart rate lower too. Also, wear a cap!
Hey Daniel, Love the vids. Looks like theres some kind of corruption at 4:50ish for around 10 secs? could just be youtube still uploading but thought i'd let you know in case. Keep up the good work :)
Yes on the slow running! It's really hard to go slow. I like to compliment myself. I'll be at a heartrate of 130 ish, hobbling along saying to myself 'Wow I'm so good at running slow' and it helps hahaha. Especially when people are passing you by. Also I think the mindset of not wanting to walk during runs or else they 'don't count' is very common in beginner runners. Building fitness is all about keeping that heartrate up for a long time. Walking breaks make it easier to keep it up for a long time, so they might just make you fitter in the end. And it still counts!!
Yes!! Walking is not talked about enough for beginners. I was run walking for a a good month before Phily trusted me to run for 15/20 minutes straight, the fitness needs to build sustainably
For people who live in hilly areas but also get bored of running the same route every time because the canal is the only flat area; the biggest mistake I made was tackling too much hill too soon. It can be great for intervals but trying to run a hill before you're ready is gonna kill the rest of the run, so just walk it if you're adamant about doing that hill. Walking uphill is just as effective for building fitness. Similarly, going too fast downhill. It can cause injury especially if your posture/form isn't great.
Daniel, great advice!Ii think everyone has done most of these, even someone like me who started running over 50 years ago (yikes!!!!😳). I always tell new runners that your shoes are the most important think you can get. Go to a running store and try on every pair then narrow them down till you find one you like. Wow you are lucky to have a live in coach, she is fantastic!
Instead of trying each shoe wouldn't it be good to go to a store that offers a proper, full video gait analysis done. I got one for 120 € BUT it was fully refunded if you bought a pair of trainers afterwards. They were fully stocked with all brands. Had me a pair of Brooks Ghost for 150€ as daily trainers but after that I now buy pre-season's shoes online for 80-110€ which normally cost 150-190€ in stores.
Right on all points, Daniel! 1. I definitely paid for it early on by training in some old running shoes. Ended up with pain in one foot and the other knee. Much better after getting some new shoes. 2. For a long time my training was also just longer and faster every time 3. S&C has worked wonders on staying healthy 4. Definitely did not have a separate easy vs hard days 5. Also used to stop running immediately after a race, then it was so tough to get going again for the next one.
Joining a running club has been amazing for my training! Just being around more experienced runners you absorb information, and the track sessions my club do that are included in our membership fee are absolutely amazing! Such good value for money!
#4 all day. Phily's first challenge with mw was unlearning a couple of years of running easy runs at the top of Z2 and into Z3. We've moved my easy and long-easy focus to RPE/feel and I try to just use my watch as an occasional spot-check on HR rather than being fixated on it and my 'feel' for easy has definitely recalibrated. 6 months on I'm happy running low Z2 and even top of Z1, no concerns over pace relative or otherwise. I actually take a real sense of achievement if my average HR for an easy run is low! Looks like you're making great progress - particularly post-race recovery avoiding the return of injury. Love the 2 x 5 x 400 session, it's a real challenge but also very satisfying. Almost as good as a set of Strides! Looking back at training log and the first 'big' session our coach dropped on me was 16 x 400 sub-5k pace... brutal. Reps 10-13 were awful! She's made it easier since then by making it 2 x 8 x 400m, somehow chunking it up makes it mentally more manageable!
I loved the “don’t compare” comment, and just wanted to add that it’s easy to think that our running heroes, be they mega-star elites or ‘normies’, (with all attendant love and respect) have found the whole process easy. My problem was thinking that progress should be linear, and that if I followed the plans I’d just keep seeing results. Not so, it seems. I’m still guilty of giving myself beats when I have a crap run, (often) and wondering if Phily ever came in from a run looking like she’d been baking in an oven for an hour and was about to expire…. Thanks for the content, Daniel. It’s brilliant. 😊
My saving grace as a new runner is that I've come from a weight training background. In fact, my PT has told me to drop the amount of weight I'm using. 🤣
Great video Dan ... but loot at the camera..... if we were talking I'd say look at me while we talk..... 20:40 Phily solid advice enjoy the run...... if you have an injury one of the best tips is to return to a run you enjoy..... it's always about your ENJOYMENT
Cant wait for those of the shelf S&C training plans, I really need that. Because I don't know what to do and so don't do anything and that gets me injured way to much.
When i 1st started running during lockdown, i ran in trainers from sports direct in just a bog standard pair of trainers (which were actually okay in though they were basketball trainers) I then stopped for a year or 2 due to spinal injuries I was previously a bodybuilder also but the spinal issues killed that off, then bought some Mizuno waverider (amazing) then bought a pair of Hoka Bondi one X (gave me horrible shin splints) I now have some Saucony Guide 15 (amazing) I have also ran without a plan even though my partner is a running coach EEK (now a member of a running club) I am out injured at the moment, I decided on a sprint finish at parkrun, and 15-20 metres from the finish line, my calf muscle popped and i tore it. That was 3 weeks ago. It is still sore, so hopefully it heals ASAP.
Mistake no. 1: Reading ‘Born to run’ and thinking trying barefoot running was the way to go. Buying some fivefingers and learning the hard way that I have slightly deformed feet and that these are the last things I should be running in 🙄.
Yo yo love you and Phily's content! Im a larger runner who has been at it for a few years now but can relate a lot to your content as well as learn from Phily. Checked out the site for some PB merch but only goes up to XL. Any chance you two can offer XXL at some point? Would love a PB tee or sweatshirt to add to my gear. Thanks!
For me, running certain distances didn't become "easy" until I started training for beyond them. 5k didn't become easy until I could do 10k. 10k didn't become easy until I could run 20, etc. I find this works up until about 30k. So if you want to be good at one distance, learn to run further. Suddenly the shorter distance is no problem.
@DanielMoves Well done for sticking at it. I started jogging then running as part of a (very successful) weight-loss lifestyle overhaul, so that was motivating in itself. Now, I'm addicted to running and setting myself new and bigger goals - couldn't stop now if I tried. 🙄 (Still run my easy runs too fast though, including today's).
Open question to people who might know more than me about this. If someone only runs twice a week, to follow the 80/20 rule they'd only have a moderate/hard run every 3 weeks. Is this productive? I've always been curious about the limits to this rule 🏃🏃
Thanks for everyone pointing out the corruption in the video, was an issue with the upload on TH-cams end 🤦🏽 apologies!!

Good suggestion! And glad you found the right group in the end

Same for me
Apologies for this one, must have missed it in the upload, original file is fine 🤦🏽

I feel you! I’ve switched to running in the flat even if it is a bit boring as hills just kill me and ruin the run for me

I’m ready for those “off-the-shelf” training plans…and the new merch of course!

Self reflection like these videos I’m sure helps-basically the new way of keeping a journal. Helps us learn and grow. Keep growing and “journaling!”
Great idea!

Thanks for the feedback, when you’ve been trained for 3 years not to look at the camera it will take a little time to break the habit 😂
Cant wait for those of the shelf S&C training plans, I really need that.

Your channel is my fav content on youtube at the moment :)
Thank you 🙏🏽 that means a lot !!

The man is finally running Ks. Just keep the settings ❤
🤦🏽😂
Thanks for the tipo 👍😃

Ohh no 🤦🏽♂️ I hope your feet are ok!
@@DanielMoves I wear Hoka’s now with custom insoles! 😁
Hi Daniel, are you an Philly changing your upload schedule? I love sitting down on a Sunday evening and watching your videos when they come out.
We try our best to get the videos out on a Sunday morning but sometimes life gets in the way 🥲
Me too - I'd get back from my Sunday arvo long run, and two new videos would pop up right on cue. I was a bit lost and confused this week!
Yo yo love you and Phily's content! Im a larger runner who has been at it for a few years now but can relate a lot to your content as well as learn from Phily. Good list! Suspect my list is a lot longer, must be a challenge living with a professional running judging your sessions!
She’s very understanding, the issues us beginners/amateurs go through are very similar to the pros they just run faster 😂
4:47 - all goes a bit mental! 😂
For me, running certain distances didn't become "easy" until I started training for beyond them. 5k didn't become easy until I could do 10k. 10k didn't become easy until I could run 20, etc. I find this works up until about 30k. Guilty of mistakes 2, 3 and 4. 😔
I'm alright for running shoes and not wanting to stop, though! 👍
Well I’m glad you didn’t want to stop! Those first few months for me were tough 😂

All this PB merch is all well and good, but how about something on the DL, if you catch my drift
I have some ideas in the pipeline 😉

Half this video was an ad for merch and your coaching.
Mistake: doing a 5k PB attempt while training for a marathon. Result: Injury.
Yes I’d advise against doing that 😂
Your biggest mistake was actually stating publically that you will do a half marathon if you got 5k subs.😂😂😂
😂 the opposite actually I wouldn’t be doing anything of the sort without the pressure of you guys!
Can I get your collab email?
how come your coach let you do such mistakes. Shame on Phily for not paying attention, or maybe you weren't listening to her valuable teachings.
Most of these mistakes were made when she didn’t coach me 😂
