    The HR spikes might be cadence lock. Where the watch can’t get a good HR signal and ends up picking up your cadence. This can sometimes be if the watch isn’t nice and flat against the skin and is a bit loose and moving around.

    Brilliant, Daniel. You and Phily are such an inspiration. I've raced bikes for the last 30 yrs, but have moved to a city where riding a bike is a deathwish. I had both legs broken by a drunk-driver 25 years ago, so I never thought i could run. You and Phily have inspired me to take up running, and it's working so far. Thank you so much for your storytelling--you're so great at it. Lots of love from Sydney. Hxx

    Hey, I've followed Phily's channel for a while, and just wanted to drop a comment re the chronic migraines- I've suffered from the same myself over the years (of the vestibular variety, so I tend to get spells of vertigo and dizziness, as opposed to head pain), but have never come across another male around my age with the same, let alone one who also runs! Totally understand the challenges of juggling this alongside running, but equally the benefits running can bring- all about finding that balance. I'm thankfully on a pretty effective treatment these days, and hope you can get the same with the new preventative meds!

    Training for a half marathon as well - my second which is in Prague in April so we're in similar training blocks! I run about 4 times a week with one long run, one speed session, one easy run, and one paced run! I run in San Francisco so it almost always includes hill training no matter what run I do :) Love seeing these videos keep it up!

    I used to get those hr spikes too. I've done two things to fix that: 1 move my watch up a bit more because the meatier part of my arm gives a better reading than the bonier part of my wrist. 2 my arms are pretty hairy and so I trim the hair on my arm right where my watch sensor sits. It's been going well for weeks now.

    Did my first 2 half marathons in September & October last year and now training for my 3rd at end of April. I run 3 times per week. Mistake I made in my first half was not fueling enough in the race (I had 1 gel at around 8 miles and died at the 11 mile mark). Second race 7 weeks later and I had a gel at the start and then another at 5 miles and a second at 10 miles. Worked a treat. I'm about your height, build, and speed so hope that helps as a barometer. Good luck for the rest of your training.

    That "squeee" moment at 10:45 where you pan over to two world-class athletes running on the next two treadmills and a world-class coach in the background...
    Same coach as you (aren't we lucky?), a half the week after you out in Lisbon. Training very similar, quelle suprise!
    Slightly different volumes/paces but I agree on the tempo sessions being good, had 20/15 on Tuesday that felt great. Just "finishing up at work" **cough** before heading down to the gym for the Friday session, 8 x 3min @ 7:00-7:10/mile pace...with varying gradients (Bart's workout), much less pleasant! It'll be good to get done though before ordering a curry!
    Longest run of the block on Sunday - 21.5km in a touch under 2 hours - ongoing gel practise! there's something deeply satisfying about knowing you can run far and not be dead!

    I run twice a week, and cross-train for the aerobic adaptation. Last year I was training for a half and my legs couldn't adapt to the increase in frequency quick enough, so I was battling constant niggles (luckily it was a trail half so my hiking experience kept me in the game, as there were so many awful hills everyone had to hike them!) After the race I pulled it right back to focus on proper adaptation. My HR spikes when I run (not a wonky watch sadly!) so for me, cross-training is essential for aerobic gains and I need to strength train so my legs don't fall apart. I'll increase to 3 runs per week when it gets cooler (it's summer where I live (Australia) so the heat is DISGUSTANG!) You're doing amazingly!

  • @DanumRunner
    @DanumRunner 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Well done Daniel, it must be hard to keep motivated when you see Phily running so much faster, but you should only compare yourself to your previous self and every run (good or bad) is building adaptations in your body over time.
    I never imagined I could run a 10k a few years ago and have now finished marathons and ultra-marathons.

    About the heart rate spike, mine hit 170 + and stayed there for about 4 minutes in the middle of an easy run. Then jus as inexplicably as it shot up it went back down to 135 (normal). I really think the problem was not my actual heart rate, but the device malfunctioning due to interference or some other external reason. Just something to consider.

    Nice work on the long run! I agree with what others have said about watch HR being wonky. I had the same thing happen to me and got the Coros armband for xmas. HR data is WAY more reliable now. Nice work on the long run! Love watching your progress because it's very relatable. I ran my first half marathon last summer. I'm running another next weekend!!! Shooting for sub 2hr on this one. Very excited that I'm finally to the taper portion of this block!

    If your cadence is about 170, it might be that your watch "locks onto" your footsteps instead of your heart rate. It used to happen to me regularly, so I started to use a chest strap more often to get more accurate heart rate data.
