I often get asked about UK pedestrian crossing by learners and even full licence holders, so it appears it is a common area where people lack knowledge, in this video I address questions on pedestrian crossings such as:
- What is the difference between all the crossings (Puffin, Pelican, Toucan, Equestrian/Pegasus, Zebra)
- What does flashing amber mean?
- what do the white zig zag lines mean?
I hope this video help you to understand pedestrian crossings more, but if you have any further questions about them then please leave a comment.

To summarize:
Pelican - designed only for pedestrians
Toucan - designed for pedestrians and cyclists (two-can)
Puffin:
>Intelligent crossing
>Has sensors
>Only stops traffic for as long as it needs to
>Can cancel requests if it detects the pedestrian has walked away
Pegasus: A modified crossing made accessible to mounted horse riders, they have buttons two metres above the ground.

Hi
Thank you so much for this explanation, I have been struggling with the difference between a pelican and puffin crossing and you have explained it really well, thank you so much keep up the good work.

Will do x
The Pelican Crossing was introduced in 1969, the Puffin Crossing is effectively an upgrade of the Pelican Crossing using modern technology as described in the video, although new Pelicans have not been installed, existing ones can still be seen in operation in some places, which shows that Pelican Crossings have withstood the test of time, unlike the Panda Crossings which they replaced. Panda Crossings were decommissioned virtually overnight.
The real life visuals are so helpful thank you x

I passed today! Thank you so much for your help 😁

@@donaldmorris1165 did you pass?
I'm more confused than I was before.
Toucan- two can cross
Equestrian- horses
Puffin- new one with sensors so no flashing amber phase needed
Pelican- flashing amber light to indicate you can go as long as no one is on the crossing
Zebra- the one with two black and white poles and an orange bit on top
Great visuals, have my test tomorrow so will watch this again before I go 👍🏾
Update: I passed 🎉🎉& the flashing Amber was a question on my test so thanks 😊

Thanks for that. I never knew the difference; and why they were so called.
Glad the video helped, liking and subscribing helps to shows your appreciation :-)
So much better than just reading from a book! Thank you this video explains important types of crossings so clearly!
I've struggled to remember these for my theory test. Thank you. Such a good tip about using hand signals if you see a car trying to overtake you whilst giving way to pedestrians at a zebra crossing.

@@UKDrivingTest already done.
I wish you could be my driving instructor … shame I’m in New Malden
ah, thank you :-)
I hate having to pull out my ocarina just to use an equestrian crossing 🤦♂️
got my theory later today at 6 very helpful thank you and wish me luck!
Best of luck!
Wondered why all these crossings were named after random birds and why the spelling is wrong lol
Also never heard of a pufin crossing before my theory course I'm currently on, I presumed they were just more modern pelican crossings. Said course wasn't particularly clear on the exact differences between the two so this video was particularly helpful for me.
Thanks for not only the clear explanation, but the additional detail about each one, really helped my confidence going forward. Last thing I'd want to do is put someone on foot at risk in particular.
2 days till my exam and I still can't remember the bloody crossings
Although I've been driving for over thirty years overseas, am studying for UK theory/driving test now and this video about crossings is very helpful. I think the UK driver protocol is the best in the world. P.s. the first time I ever saw a zebra crossing was the Beatle's Abbey Road album cover🙂
Glad the video helped, liking and subscribing helps to shows your appreciation :-)
The zebra crossing are replacing the standard cross walks in CA. They cost a lot more to paint and keep up the paint but it's CA, they don't care about tax payer money there.
Thanks for clarifing the differences between them, first time when I heard about the equestrian crossing

Amazing what a pelican crossing can do.
We need this in Australia
Also we need the UK Keep left Blue arrow here in Australia.
Ours is way too American :(
Because we didn't sign the Vienna convention on vehicle traffic rules..
Do you know much about our crossings?
Do you know about our famous Crossing sound. And the crossing 🚸 in general?
PB/5 CROSSING signal?
I want lollipop lights here...
We also have zebra crossings and very much like the UK in all other respects.
Thanks mate!
Now I understand everything except why it's zebbra instead of zebra? When did the e get changed in zebra, while the b's stayed the same?
Equestrian crossing is more correct, for this type of crossing as Pegasus was a flying horse he could fly across and wouldn't have need for a crossing. There is also DUC crossing... Dick User interface Crossing....where someone doesn't obey correct procedure and just runs across in front of traffic.
You are “approaching” a traffic light red and amber is showing , what should you do?
1) carry on if the crossing is clear?
2) stop and wait for green light?
3) give way to pedestrians waiting to cross?
4) give way to pedestrians on the crossing?
You were explicit enough and i learned important basics. Thank you very much
Put video at 1.25 speed
great video, you should add some timestamps to the video aswell so a viewer can easily go back and forth between the acronyms for each of the crossings
You could add them for us.
@@interestedlen8823 I'm not your guy
6:53 hahaha this is GOLD footage! 🤣🤣
more like driver being half asleep, not realising other vehicles are stopping to give-away, and therefore extremely dangerous! Could have easily killed the kid on the bike on another day.
I've never understood why they introduced the flashing amber. The original lights, red, red and amber together then green was fine. After all, green only means go if it's safe which is exactly the same as flashing amber. That said, that was a very good explanation from you.

Omg that footage of the car trying to overtake! What in the world, soo dangerous. Thanks for the video!
yes quite scary, and unfortunately not the worst example, there is one recently where a father has to pull their child out of the path of an overtaking car as they are trying to cross the road at a zebra crossing.
Not really sure what goes through these drivers heads.

Hi are you expected to know the difference between the toucan, pelican and puffin crossings on your driving test? As the only visible difference is the screen where the buttons are.
You don't need to know how to identify the different types, HOWEVER you need to know how to respond to each type and the rules, such as 1.) priorities at zebra crossing 2.) what flashing amber means 3.) what solid amber means etc.
LOVE how you’ve literally broke this down into LAYMAN TERMS…THANKS 🙏🏾

Right can anyone tell me the answer to this question? I took my test in 1982. And I was told that if the lights are on red and nobody is near or around then as I was advised at that time is that you don’t have to stop. Only if someone is near or approaching the crossing. I know that was a good while ago. I must add. This is if the lights are on red. ?
sounds like a load of rubbish, sorry.
Just someone making up rules.
Many thanks, very helpful
How much does the government fine you if you illegally cross the road???
never heard of any circumstances where it is illegal to cross the road, except motorway.
UK is not like the USA where there are laws of 'jay walking' or what ever it is called.
Thank you so much my dear want to pass my exams .
This really helped me , thank you
It's INTELLIGENT: "Pedestrian User-Friendly INtelligent"
Brilliant video thanks!
Although I think it unwise to do so, isn't it the case that cars need only stop at a zebra crossing if the pedestrian has actually stepped onto it ?
Also, I see in the video that a man was teaching a child to ride across the zebra X, whereas again I'm sure the ruling is that's only right on a toucan.
I'm astounded at the whimsicality of British punning humour, and the anagrams in the crossings' names. I always wondered why these animals names had been chosen. I also now know how to spell 'pelicon' and 'pellicon' , 'pufin' and 'puffin' !. ( I didn't know that puf(f)fins are more 'intelligent' than pel(l)icans !.
A superb reminder about the value of still knowing the correct, (ahem !), but now surely non-existent hand signals.
If the two above points could be addressed, I'd be grateful.
Thanks very much.
Legally you only need to stop when a pedestrian has stepped onto the crossing, true.
But like you say VERY unwise, most pedestrians will not look at Zebra crossings and just walk towards them and keep walking, so on approach it's best to treat it like a give way, plan to stop (might not need to fully stop, depends on visibility), scan for pedestrians, and only proceed when you can see no pedestrians approaching the crossing.
Yes technically no suppose to cycle across a Zebra crossing, like how you are not meant to cycle on the footpath, same thing. Only allowed to cycle across a toucan crossing.
Cheers for your video, most appreciated ;-)

We used to think that if you turned the cone the traffic light would turn red quicker 😂. How wrong were we…
Wish me luck my test is tomorrow 😅
I got used to all these civilised luxuries in Britain, then I moved to Naples where traffic does whatever it wants, including running red lights routinely and ignoring/parking on zebra crossings (not that there are many). There are no pedestrian buttons to press and pedestrians basically take their lives into their own hands constantly throughout the day.
Part of me now thinks "we don't need all the nanny state toys to cross the road like we had in the UK" and that the UK goes too far with pedestrian aids.
My test is on friday 😭😭😭
I thought 3 different brands made those crossing mechanisms. I guess it makes sense that they all do something different.
exams in 2 hours
How did it go?
@@UKDrivingTest passed 😁
wow... this is complicated. Here in Germany we have two crossings. Automatic timer red/green and press a button and wait. Bicycles follow the normal car traffic lights (except in very rare cases cyclists have special smaller traffic lights, but they work the same as for cars). You even have special for horses? - lol. Horses just follow the normal car traffic lights here.
This is a great video, thank you. Very clear and easy to understand.

There's a zebra crossing I use every day. I was walking across when a car pulled into the second lane (one way traffic). I gave him a look, he shouted "there's two lanes *****". BUT I never knew about the zigzags and I bet they're painted there! I had a feeling he was driving badly and maybe this is why.

Had some new crossings pop up near me that look like pelicans (WAIT button, green/red man on opposite side of road), but have sensors and act like a puffin. Would these be considered a pelican, or puffin?
Sounds like they might be a pedestrian crossing at a traffic light controlled junction.
In which case it is debatable what to call them, possibly puffin due to sensors, but it does not really matter, just deal with them correctly.
Thank you very much sir. I definitely needed this. I was always getting it confused.

At the end of the video, you mentioned about using the hand signals. The thing I wonder is, would someone overtaking just before a crossing remember what the signals mean?
I think they probably would, the hand signal are fairly obvious, well imo anyway.
But even if they didn't someone sticking their hand out of their window would at least confuse them and likely to cause them to slow as a result.

There is also a pelican crossing without the flashing amber sequence
Do you mean when the crossing is part of a set of traffic lights at controlling a junction?
As you can get the 'yellow box' for a pelican crossing there, i.e. it says "WAIT" on the box, but as it is part of a traffic light controlled junction there will be no flashing amber.
@@UKDrivingTest yes them
