    Some of the information in this video may just be useful to know, like knowing why there is a gap in the roundabout sign, other bits could prove vital to being able to read the road signs correctly, such as understanding how a filter lane is shown of a road sign or how you can tell who has priority by looking at the sign.
    If you can't read the road signs correctly on your driving test it is likely to lead to confusion and you making a mistake, so make sure you understand how the UK road signs work.

      I find it shocking that so many people lack common sense in the comments and knowledge of road signs that are driving on our roads. Don't people have to be prepared and learn to answer road signs questions that randomly may arise in their driving tests anymore ???
      I have always thought that maybe an additional little no entry sign on the entry sign to a roundabout sign.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I would like to think HGV drivers have better knowledge that 'normal' drivers, so yes they should really know this stuff.
      If this what you find, or are some HGV drivers a bit clueless?

      @@UKDrivingTest ... my job was an old school vocation at one time , you kind of fell into it through family but it seems nowadays anyone is up for it , and really since they reduced the age at which you can obtain a license ( was 21now 18 ) I find that the younger drivers are driving trucks like they were in their cars ... driving standards have dropped all through the spectrum and what we need is very good public informative films like what you have produced.. so well done again .

    • @Rroff2
      @Rroff2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Rogue-cg1rm IMO it isn't just standards are dropping but more and more road layouts are becoming an unintuitive mess in the name of squeezing out the last bit of peak traffic flow with the increased levels of traffic. Probably designed by someone in an office who has never actually driven them - while they might be technically correct just far too much information to try and take in on approach to use them correctly through the whole length of the layout. Which is less of a problem for an experienced driver, though still not great, but prohibitive for those without a lot of experience.
      When I passed my test 20 years ago I used to be able to breeze through the town I lived in, quick glance at the sign and get setup in lane - now with much of the road layout redesigned or replaced with complex roundabouts and junctions it feels a bit like trying to pat your head while rubbing your belly while balancing on a tightrope navigating them and I doubt many people new to the layouts get it correct first time because intuition alone won't carry you through.
      A lot of layouts could be simplified as well, with only a small loss of peak throughput, with the use of cross-hatched areas to direct flow, etc. I find it puzzling why there are a small number of really well designed roundabouts where you barely have to think to get it right but most don't use that approach - but I think some planners just don't care to go beyond the minimum which works and others are focussed on purely mathematical min/maxing of traffic flow over the actual driving experience.

    • @Rroff2
      @Rroff2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Rogue-cg1rm On a related note I work in distribution - there seems to be a bit of a brewing crisis when it comes to HGV drivers - a lot of the younger generation just aren't interested in doing it combined with ever eroded rate of pay for doing it - a lot of the older drivers (who are increasingly going on long term sick then leaving the industry due to the way many companies are treating them) started on higher pay than many new drivers can hope to progress towards after a few years of driving now.

    I have my full license, but i like to refresh myself with videos like these every now and then. Just to see if there’s anything I could pick up on. Always learning. A tip for learners is, just stick the basics of lane discipline, stay left unless you know you have to be elsewhere. I consider myself a fairly experienced and very confident driver now, but the one thing I’ve found in my years of driving is lane discipline makes your life miles easier, especially in areas you’re not familiar with. Good luck!

I was already on 9 points and there were even Police helicopters following me so I got stopped.I did the quickest thinking I have ever done and explained I was traumatized after a complete Middle Eastern stranger got in my car in Piccadilly Circus and told me to take him to Harrow (All True but it did NOT affect me thereafter on the journey ). The gaps on the map type roundabout signs have less to do with foreign drivers than you think. This style of signage was introduced in 1965 and was based on the pre-1965 style of signage introduced back in the 1930s, which also had a gap to the right of the entry point to the roundabout to denote which way not to turn. The 1930s were not noted for large numbers of foreign vehicles on our roads.

      Yeah the road signs are generally very considered and consistent. There's no route to the right joining the roundabout so they rule out showing you one. You could still theoretically have circular configurations where turning either direction is allowed, but they presumably mostly died out over the last 60 years of refining the rules and maintaining the roads

    Great, like others have said I didn't realise what these little details meant. The Pease Pottage stub is perhaps a little odd not having a little pointy bit! In my opinion any road that you are permitted to access from a roundabout could be a small arrow like the other main road entrances. The line break in the roundabout is a good idea now that I know what it is there for but I bet not many people do!! Perhaps it would be more noticeable if that missing bit was shown in red. Red used in this way internationally usually means danger or stop. This could be why some people blindly go down the wrong slip road sometimes, assuming they are not drunk of course! Great video and very informative, thank you.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Putting the 'no entry' part of the road as red sounds like a good idea, but of course would cost too much due to extra printing and needed to align it perfectly.
      I question if they even need to put a stub for a no entry on the signs in the first place, I don't see any benefit of doing it.

    A long slow-motion video showing the roundabout/junction it self, and the traffic going around it. So that we can try to figure out when is the right time that is safe to go.
    You might even stop the video your self at critical moments to highlight how you read the road.

      Yes that is on the list, will be a bit harder video to film as need to mount the camera to look out of the drivers window, i.e. where you would be looking at a roundabout. This I can do with one in-car and my dash camera.
      Doing a t junction would be even tricker, i may even need a few cameras as I would need to have one pointing to the right and one to the left, and then edit it to switch between the footage of the cameras. Possibly also having a third camera to film me inside the car looking both ways.

    In Ireland they put all these signs about 2yds from the traffic lights or after the point where you would need to decide on which lane to be in.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question!
      It is a diversion / alternative route.
      This one appears to be for Brighton, normally you would go along the M23 to get to Brighton, but if the motorway was busy or you just wanted to avoid the motorway you follow the diamonds and it will take you an alternative route.
      They often use the symbols to avoid writing Brighton on every sign, at some stage it would have clarified the diamonds mean Brighton, probably when the alternative route started "Follow 'diamond' for Brighton" or similar.
      They also use symbols like circles, triangles and squares, sometimes solid sometimes just the outline of the shape. They do this so they can put multiple diversions on a sign without having to write "Brighton, Horsham, London...." loads of times and cluttering the sign.

    I guess I knew most of this already from many years of driving but nice to have it confirmed. Exception is the reason for the gap, but it makes sense. Being prepared to merge after a left filter is a good point.

    This vid is great, very helpful. Thank you. A few things that I find a bit irritating about driving in the UK, not that I’m from anywhere else.. but... foliage, is very annoying with road signs as you quite rightly pointed out.... but also, road signs written on the road... often rubbed out.... is very annoying, not only because they get rubbed out.... but also... when cars stop over them, Like at traffic lights you cannot read them at all, So not very well thought out in my opinion. Also, as another person pointed out, I wish this was more common knowledge because the amount of dingbats out there is horrendous.

    6:20 nice to see you giving the artic plenty of room. 👌
    7:00 ‘if it’s safe to do so’ is a phrase that is often forgotten by drivers making a manoeuvre, this is usually forgotten the millisecond they receive their full licence.
    Great upload, I didn’t realise the break in the roundabout sign would help me driving in countries that drive on the right, probably would be obvious to me if I ever encountered it, not yet ventured out of the U.K. but if I do then this will definitely help.
