  • A special thanks to the two Rush Fans at The Landis Theater last weekend 1/27/2024 who caught the drum solo. I (Vince) cut your videos together and would like to share 'my' attempt at this. I've always loved his drum solos over the years so I thought I'd take some of my favorite moments from those solos, knit them together and try and play them as a song so we can remember those wonderful moments. Still a BIG work in progress but I hope you all enjoy!

@@maness2112nah it wasn’t that he didn’t like the fans he didn’t like the adulation that was obsessively overdue by fans.. he said it was wrong but he appreciated fans no doubt

Actually you think that Neil is still alive....unbelievable. I have seen that drum solo in Frankfurt at the R30 tour, the one on DVD. I will never forget that night, the best Live gig I have ever seen.

Amazing! I have to ask, how long did it take you to learn to solo over that 3 note Ostinato? To me, that's the most amazing thing. Even The Professor himself said that it took him quite some time to become comfortable enough with playing that Ostinato that he could solo over it. I think drummers are the only ones to notice that Ostinato. I hardly ever hear non- musicians comment on it.

Danny, thank you for the nice comments. This is a work in progress Vince here I was reluctant to even do a drum solo within an Rush tribute because it’s just so personal so what I tried to do was play several of his elements from his drum solos over the years and stitch them together And really play it like a song as best I can so the answer question yeah, the 3 over 4 is always something I’m working on to try and smooth out.

Great job! I understand your kit is set up to be a replica of Neil's kit, including placement. Do you find the height of the toms and the hi hat being set that high uncomfortable to play? Or is that the way you prefer it as well. To me it seems like a "reach" to hit those high toms, and to me would be uncomfortable to play.

    • @therushexperience7208

Tony - Vince here and thanks for the nice comments. To answer your question. When I decided I was going to play in a Rush Tribute years ago coupled with the fact I'm a HUGE Rush fan; I wanted Rush Fans that came to see the band play instantly recognize the drumkit as something they've seen a 'Real' Rush Show. So, I forced myself to play the kit as Neil had it set up. It took some time to get used to for sure. Now I love it. What's interesting is sometimes I can't bring this kit into a room that we might play at that doesn't have direct access to the stage. So, I'm at the final stages of bringing my "B" Set-Up, which will be on a fixed drum riser and is a 1:1 Replica of Neil's RED TAMA's. Now that's taking time to get used to again, with the Ride Cymbal being so far to the right.

The dudes definitely got the investment into the whole Neil Peart rig complete with rotating riser and tripod-less stands screwed into the drum board. That said I couldn’t get an accurate idea of what this solo truly sounded like live. Was this a recording direct from the mixing board or was this a recording from someone’s camera. Regardless I’ll give my opinion off of what I hear. My expectations are set really high because it’s a Neil Peart tribute so it should be close to perfect. Every Rush tribute band I’ve seen the drummer either has a crappy drum set and no skills or he has an almost identical drum kit and STILL no skills. I’m not kidding. Based off what I can hear this guy is okay but with the rig he’s got he should be killing it. I’ll leave it at that because I don’t want to trash someone else’s hard work.

I see what you're saying and share the exact same opinion, but in all these guys' defense, not even top drummers can sound remotely as accurate and sophisticated as Neil when attempting to play Rush song's or even some excerpts/highlights from his solos. so I never ever expect lower level drummers to sound any good at all whenever I see a tribute band or someone covering Rush on youtube.
