It made perfect sense moving Avatar Kyoshi up to the Kyoshi island episode. That conversation she had here was basically the speech she gave in Book 3 when Aang was looking for any way to face the Firelord that wouldn't end with Aang having to kill him. "I should have known better than to ask Kyoshi!"

    • @seriouslydon_t
      @seriouslydon_t 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I might misunderstand you but are you saying it makes sense to have a conversation that's supposed to happen at the very end... at the very beginning? Because I'm not going to lie, while I did like that scene with Kyoshi fighting I absolutely hated that speech afterwards as I feel it basically broke much of the show's potential. You can't simply move events around... There's a reason that speech happened at the very end in the cartoon!

The entire story of Avatar is about Aang learning to be the Avatar when he doesn't want to be
This version of events still fits in that same theme, with Kyoshi telling him that he'll have to be a merciless warrior, which is antithesis to who Aang is as a character

  • @andersonjoshua18

    • @ItsAsparageese

Yeah, this! We didn't really get the "Sokka is sexist but gets taught better" arc. I love that the Sokka/Suki relationship got more complete development, that's awesome, but I feel like it was important for his character for him to be humbled a bit and also have the realization that someone can be a girl AND a warrior.

Kyoshi did not show up on Kyoshi Island in the animated series; she later takes over Aang’s body to prove how Chin the Conqueror was killed. Getting to see her here was AMAZING!!!!!!
I think the reason people get so disappointed is because they expect an exact carbon copy of the original when things are made into live action, and that is totally on them. I liked the changes they made, especially with the amount of time they have to tell the story. We’re still getting the same story just told slightly differently, and I am 100% OK with that. What’s interesting is that the director said there were things they wanted to do in this season that, for whatever reason, they couldn’t. So they want to take those things and put them in season 2. That makes me wonder, if it happened, how would they change the story to fit it in? Also, the next two episodes I loove so much. I’m looking forward to your reaction to it. You’ll definitely be surprised… 🎉 🔥

I just genuinely hope that Netflix makes the rest of the series to this despite some fans just absolutely ripping it to shreds. I'm like Answer, I've been watching this show since it first aired on Nickelodeon when I was a young teenager and it has been my comfort show ever since, and I absolutely LOVE this live action adaptation! It is so visually stunning and I was genuinely moved to tears multiple times. There's room for improvement on certain aspects sure, but nothing that they changed was offensive or ruined the original for me. And the way this first season ends left me wanting more just like the original always did. Love your reactions as always guys!! Can't wait for the next episode!

The choreography for all the moves, the fighting, and just everything has been perfect this season. As well the locations and views have been amazing, they if nothing did well in nailing the choreography and locations. When I got to this episode it felt like they decided that instead of Roku possessing Aang for the first time, it will be Kyoshi. Not a bad decision since it played the same purpose. I agree.
      spoilers below:
Mae's casting was a huge miss for me. And the dynamic shift and reveal of Ozai and Azula's relationship........and Azula's looks just doesn't look cunning enough. Not fat shaming, I think she's super charming in interviews, but maybe lose some weight for the role of Azula? The low camera angles absolutely does nothing for her. Also the biggest issue for me was the dialogue. It felt draggy at times, like the point could've been made with shorter sentences. Also how we don't get to see Aang BE goofy and chill and instead have him tell us that he's just a kid and loves to good off and eat banana cakes, and then tht he's scared. Show not tell.
The biggest thing tht I just couln't look last was Katara. Girl has the same expressionsssions all the time and rushes her lines. Line delivery is a problem. I've seen her in Anne with an E and she was pretty good there. So I'm blaming the director for this. They need acting classes to up their game in the later seasons.

Kyoshi appearing was a bit of a mix of two moments from the cartoon. There's the time Aang went to see Roku at his temple in the fire nation and Roku took over like Kyoshi did here. And then there was the episode where Aang went on trial for Kyoshi killing the town's leader and Katara dresses Aang up in Kyoshi's armor, but then he becomes Kyoshi and she tells the village how things went down, basically confessing lol.
So yes, in the cartoon Aang was possessed twice by previous incarnations, though the fighting one was Roku and it happened mostly off screen.

So yeah, I'd say hard core. I love the live action but it is very different - that's ok, because I find it true to the original concept. This is more real world and so of course it is different. We are talking a world that has had a world war for the last 100 years - that in itself is dark. The animated version kept us a bit removed from that and from death in general and that was fine, but getting a real world version is also good. The two offer different views of the same story and I love each for what it is.

There were only 3 seasons of Avatar. Not sure why you keep saying 4, the only thing I can think is during the original release is season 3 got split release date due to some studio stuff or such that happen at the time. But all 3 seasons were similar length though so even though season 3 was split release it had same total number of episodes.
So live action would only be 3 seasons if they follow the same layout. For the Anime it went: Book Water first seasons focused on island hoping and ended at Northern Water Temple. Book Earth focused mainly going around Earth Kingdom and ending with the fall of the Ba Sing Se. Lastly Book 3 probably felt like two seasons because from what I recall part 1 ended with the failed attack during the Ecplise and then was like over half a year before the remaining episodes released leading up to the end.

Loved the Kioshi avatar state scene. Almost brought a tear to my eye. Overall I’m fairly happy. I’m unsure exactly if the core messages and themes in the series have been kept intact but I think it’s too early maybe to judge yet.
But, one thing is definitely in the original series Aang was all about peace-not winning strictly through harming others. He did fight-but he was very creative to use his powers so as not to actually harm others for the most part.
And I think too that’s partly why the Team Avatar group was always essentially on the run, hopping from town to town. Because they weren’t really seeking to get into direct conflict with the armies looking for them.
    They really were just kids.
And that’s a huge part of the finale in the original too-how Aang the whole time was avoiding being forced to take the life of someone else-that when he was given the task to take down the fire lord finally, he had a mental breakdown the day before.
    He was just a kid.
This was an extremely important theme in the original series-that hit home for a lot of people. Seeing finally a kid backed into a corner to essentially do the unthinkable.
And we didn’t know till the very end what he would do. And of course we all know that Aang did find a way to defeat the fire lord without taking his life.
But, the whole series, Aang was told by just about every person he encounters that he will have to kill the fire lord.
The warrior lady avatar, Kioshi, she tells him that and he is upset. The other prior avatars tell him the same. His friends think he will have to. Etc.
But, in the end, Aang forges his own path and doesn’t kill the fire lord.
So that’s one theme I hope is in this series too.

Gordon looks very young in season 1 but they wrapped filming on this 2 years ago. He looks much more Aang-like and grown up right now if you see his interviews.
Aang did channel Kyoshi in season 2 of ATLA, but in a very different way. The avatar state scene here was amazing.

Don’t get me wrong I think there is room for improvement but it for sure is not horrible. It’s different from the anime but I think we need to wait for season 2 to see if it the plot will flow smoothly or not.

I can't wait to see your reactions for the other ones. Unfortunatly I saw some bad reactions last week, but it was probably due to too big die-hard fans who wanted to see the exact same thing they wanted to see and they got disapointed. I think my biggest gripe with this adaptation is Katara's characterization. For some reason in live action Katara never gets to have her fiery attitude, they always make her quieter and softer and it's such a disappointment. The script leaves something to be said too, it started getting very repetitive. Besides that though I really loooove the set design, costumes and effects, and the cast picks themselves are amazing!! It's just the writing that's kind of off.

Overall a good episode but i'm really sad Suki has been reduced to this starry eyed girl stuck in a small town dreaming about the world. In the original she has that iconic line "I'm a warrior, but I'm a girl too" and none of that powerful theming made it through here.

They still had the essence of that line with 'I'm not just a warrior, I'm a KYOSHI warrior." This is a world where women are known badass fighters. It never really made sense that there had to be dialogue in the animation to PROVE that. In the original, Sokka pursues Suki and she eventually breaks. In this one, she's empowered to pursue him. I feel like that's being missed by a lot of people. She wears the pants.

The way I see it, they are adapating the whole story, not strictly per book coz some elements are pulled in from other books into season 1. So when they move things around to make the story telling more efficient and time saving, some just don't like it. But then I personally think it's more realistic, they don't have the time and money to show all of it scene by scene

I agree with that. I liked this show so much but I think they didn't show Katara so well. However, personally, I don't understand why certain changes were made from the original series. Especially since they change key aspects of world building and lore. I also have a difficult time knowing that Mike & Bryan (the original creators) left this show because the producers wouldn't allow them to have creative control or respect their vision of what this was meant to be.

This is a retelling of a story I love. Its not 1 to 1 and some of the changes are not what I would have made but the overall story hits all the points I needed it to. It doesnt replace the origionals but augments my enjoyement of the world and bring in fans who may not enjoy the origional medium.

I consider myself a very big fan of Avatar the Last Airbender, though I would say that I'm more forgiving than some, it would seem. When it comes to adaptations from one medium to another, though, I am very firmly in the camp that believes that the story must adapt to the medium. Just look at Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The original format was a BBC radio play, which is different from the book, which is different from the television series, which is different from the movie. They all share the same fundamental narrative backbone, but they are all made to suit their given medium. I even enjoyed the movie and was quite comfortable with the changes they made for it.
Now for this series, I know for certain that they are not keeping the same ticking clock, and will not be having everything happen in the span of a single year. They know these kids are going to age, and they can't pretend that they aren't. So, it is something where they are adapting the timetable to the medium, and having to work with real actors growing up as the story progresses. Beyond that, I don't know much more.

I think this adaptation is a C-, the movie an F-,to the animated series A+++. This adaptation is watchable, but isn’t written very well. It is even more obvious because the animated series was exceptionally well written. Still, I had a lot of fun watching this as an ATLA fan, even with its many flaws, and I will watch season 2, but I hope they improve the writing (in pacing, showing instead of telling, characterization, character development, and dialogue).
It still has potential in my eyes. They haven’t burned the bridge yet, but they can do a lot better. I think they can if they address it now
