A lot of us have taken a strong stance against the existence of this movie, I think the fandom did a pretty good job in denying it's existence. I just wish they hadn't recommended this movie, it just adds a bitter taste to the whole series. So Netflix is promising a 'great' live action but the fandom is kind of on edge about how they might butcher this series once more, I can only hope Avatar studios can wash away this bad era for ATLA.

Some of it is nitpicking (as someone who saw the movie without seeing the show and who saw the show later). Like the Appa stuff is definitely nitpicking as for this time frame it wasn't that bad for an animal character. The contrast with Avatar is stark but Green Lantern was around this time so it wasn't out of place. And the visual casting of Katara and Sokka wasn't bad, they just weren't written or acted at all like the show characters. Zuko, I feel is a bit off visually but with better scripting, I think it could've worked especially since the actor is talented. Uncle Iroh, honestly if he didn't drink tea and mispronounce his name, I don't think anyone would recognize his character at all. Again, I'm sure the actor might be fine but it's a miscast for sure. Uncle Iroh being overweight is part of his innocuous appearance and part of the deception of his character that people underestimate him. The fire lord could definitely be worse - he's passable (could look a bit meaner), just not as good as Mark Hamill's voice.
As a standalone movie (ignoring the show), it's not a great movie, not even good but it's watchable in a late-night Netflix kind of way. If you compare it to the show, it really gets dragged down though, and becomes nearly unbearable.

In2010 as a senior in highschool who had literally grown up with the cartoon on Nickelodeon I went into the theatre sooo excited, happy, and ready for more of what I knew and still know to be one of the best original IP/american written cartoons in existence. This is right up there with some of my favorite anime, which this drew heavy inspiration from. From the very first moment Sokka opens his mouth and there is not an ounce of humor or happiness from him I knew there was a problem. Then when I heard the very first bastardization of names and how they pronounced Aang as "oong" My excitement turned into twisted despair, and I could feel a piece of my soul being ripped from my body. By the end of the movie I needed to be carried out of the threatre I was too weak to move. I couldnt look at a tv or mirror for two weeks because all I would see was the black void of nothingness that this film represents. Reaching out to take yet another part of me. Screw everyone involved with this film. I cannot imagine netflix will do any better.
Edit: I returned from the future... Netflix version was not much better. what a damn shame....Better, but not by much...

I had followed all the fan accounts for years, every set piece and casting call sent out I followed. So when the movie finally came out I was beyond hyped! Twilight Eclipse came out the same weekend as The Last Airbender and my whole friend group wanted to see Twilight; I, being a fool, said "No Avatar is going to be 1000X better I am going to see that instead!" So my friends called me a loser and I dragged my boyfriend, now husband, to see The Last Airbender. The theater was empty except for 2 other teen couples. I remember being shocked with how empty the theater was but I didn't care because my favorite show was coming to life! I had a smile on my face from the moment I sat in my seat; the lights went down and I became giddy with anticipation. The movie started and my ear-to-ear smile faded being replaced by a look of pure annoyance. The opening scene with the elements being bent was what made me release the Twilight lover's were right this was going to SUCK! I sat in the theater disappointed and upset by the ending 1/3 of the movie all the couples decided to make fun of the movie, which made the experience better. When Katara says, "They became friends right away" we all burst out laughing and one girl yells "the exposition in this movie is exquisite!" Watching your reaction reminded me of how I felt seeing it for the first time and how funny some parts of the movie were even though they weren't supposed to be!
Also, love your videos love from rural Wisconsin!

When The Appleton Oak said “WHY ARE THERE SO MANY WHITE PEOPLE HERE?!?!” I really felt that. It really buggs me to no end the fact that essentially the entirety of both water tribes were whitewashed AND they made the villains be people of darker skin tones (I'm pretty sure there's a name for this phenomenon but I cant quite remember it).
Also, regarding the name pronunciations; most of the names in the show are Chinese/Japanese/Indian, Korean (East and South East Asian mainly) etc., inspired. So, since this is an original american cartoon; during the original tv show, they went with the AMERICAN ENGLISH pronunciation and in the movie, they tried to go with the TRADITIONAL CHINESE pronunciation (hence, Iroh sounding like Yeh-Roh and Aang sounding like Ong and so on). Which theoretically speaking is in fact the correct way to pronounce those names, but I think it would've been better if they:
    EITHER
    a) Had gone with the traditional Chinese pronunciations since the origin of the tv show
    OR
    b) If they had kept the american english pronunciations for the sake of CONSISTENCY
Anyways, props to you guys for watching this film (which does not exist in Ba-Sing-Se), it's a tough one

I was 16. I just got my license. My two best friends and I were obsessed with the show and couldn’t have been more hyped about the movie. When I tell you I was excited about a film… I can’t even tell you. I had a dedicated notebook to taking notes about the production, the casting, the premier date… all of it!
We show up to the theater. And I knew. I KNEW something was wrong when we showed up and we were 3 of 5 people in the screen room. Then…THEN. the opening scene with the 4 elements and then Katara narrating the beginning and I knew… I knew it was over. Every time a name was said wrong my soul died a little… the acting, the writing… those, like, 8 earthbenders sending one rock floating across the screen at 5 miles an hour *facepalm*, and they did Appa SO👏🏻DIRTY👏🏻My god… I’ve never, NEVER been more disappointed in a movie in my life. I can’t even call it a film. It doesn’t even deserve that!

As a fan, I was amazed at what they were saying: “This is gonna be huge!”, “We got the kid from Twilight!” No one in the room had seen the show and I had to bite my tongue at how bad it was (I was low on the totem pole at that time). For the casting aspect, the creators were pretty open about their inspirations. The clothing, the architecture, some of the customs and even the names! Like the air nomads lift their references straight from Tibetan Buddhism, the fire nation was inspired by imperial Japan, but also some of communist China, as well as having its architecture taken from Vietnamese temples. The earth kingdom was ment to me diverse, with cultural inspiration ranging from Korea to the Indian subcontinent.
And yes, the water tribe was inspired by inuit and other arctic circle native cultures... but notably NOT the Sami of Scandinavia who have a very distict garb and culture of caribou herding, things not referenced in the anime. So I think it's safe to assume that the water tribe were not blond haired, blue eyed Europeans.

Obviously it's not one to one, but in the animated series, the Water tribe were based on Inuit culture, as you said, the Fire Nation was Japanese, the Earth Kingdom was Chinese, and the Air Nomads were Tibetan and around that area.
I know you said the firebenders "were Asian" Oak, but actually they were ALL based on Asian descent. The Avatar world is basically if everyone was Asian, and a lot of the concepts of bending and chi and everything were based on parts of East Asian culture.
Shamalyan casted the firebenders as South Asian, as Indian, which TECHNICALLY fits in with the theme, but considering the Fire Nation was based on Japan because of their huge industrial revolution esp during the WW2 Era.... like....it's a strange choice. They could have gotten away with making them a subsect of firebenders (like the Swamp Benders in the animated series) or even of the Air Nomads (like the monk Aang unlocks his chakras with in Book 2). In fact, I think the different Air Nomad temples were different culturally as well. One of the Nomad temples could have very well been based on Indian or South Asian descent. We never saw any of them alive.

Don't think it's too tricky where M. Night might have come up with the idea to add some Indians to the world considering he is ethnically one as well. It also likely explains why he cast two Indians in a role where they didn't necessarily match up to the physical description from the animated series. He was attempting to make the cast more diverse (at least to Indians) while weirdly leaving everyone else white.
It's the decision to have everyone else be white while mixing it up with the Firebenders that's the weird choice. Had he made every group a bit more diverse, maybe it would've worked better.
As pointed out, the Avatar's world is not ours so you could mix up the races as our races don't exist there. But, that would definitely isolate some fans of the show for sure (purists).

    • @MrBrock314
      @MrBrock314 ปีที่แล้ว

It's bad, but if you can ignore the terrible naming and its source material, it's definitely watchable in a late-night "there's nothing left to watch...oh this is something I haven't seen" kind of way. It's better than some Netflix and Prime videos I've seen for sure. This has a low rating (4.0/10) on IMDB but I've seen things that are 2.8 and 2.2 and they are (accurately) worse so as bad as this movie is compared to its source material, it definitely can be worse.
For example, this movie does still have a coherent plot even if it's much worse than the original concept. There are movies that don't have a coherent plot and they're much worse in effects, script, etc.
This movie is notable mainly for how bad it is compared to the source material, not how bad it is on a raw scale if you never saw the tv show.

I am curious to see what you guys think of Legend of Korra, it does seem to be a mixed bag of people liking it or not. In my opinion it doesn’t live up to the original, but it is decent. I tried watching it a couple times but I finally finished it recently and it helped that I read the comics as it fills in some of the time skipped.
Netflix is doing the live action show and the first season should be coming this summer, I think. There will also be an animated adult team avatar film, a new animated series for an earth avatar (after Korra), an animated Zuko film, an unknown animated film and two unknown animated series which will come out over the course of the next 5 years or so.

Random things that i notice in this movie i found hilariously bad:
    1. The bending is so SLOW, nonbenders would've dominated the fight so quick if they just charge first
    2. There is one establishing shot in one of the air temples where instead of they do a reveal of the temple (like from behind the rocks to reveal it) they first reveal the temple, swipe so the rocks cover it, and then reveal the temple again. Lol.
    3. They full on revealed Ozai's face in the least intimidating way possible and then acted like they never revealed his face, give him a booming voice, and shoot his tapping finger when General Zhao was talking to him about the blue spirit. Like??? Did they forgot that they revealed him or...??
    4. Them focusing so closely on their faces when they discussed going village go village thing. Like, i knew the actors must've been like 👁️👄👁️
    5. That dude who betrayed aang having his hand hanging just expecting a pay day. Okay ✨purr✨
    6. Also, the characters explaining their whole entire back story over and over again everytime they meet a new character 😂. Like why was katara telling Zuko she's the last water bender in her tribe? What was the point of that??
My 1st time watching the movie was in a theater with a bunch of avatar fans and ngl it was the BEST watching experience of my life. I think everyone watching, since they are such a fan and has been looking forward to the movie was in shock and denial the whole time, everyone was laughing at everything and throwing jokes left & right.
