I actually love the immediate attraction Suki and Sokka have towards each other. Neither of them have ever left their villages, so this is likely the first time they are seeing anyone their age that they didnt grow up with. A crush is pretty normal in those circumstances. What i want is to see how it develops beyond just a crush of convenience

    • @lamented-musings8932
      @lamented-musings8932 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Nah it's forced. In the original there were plenty of guys suki's age in her village so the attraction meant more. Here it's just a forced attraction. Her attraction to Sokka in the original was from his personality and willingness to take accountability mostly. That means more than attraction to looks.

One thing I love about the new intro is that it shows just how powerful and formidable the Air Nomads actually were, which is something we never really got to see in the Original Series (since Aang, while an Airbending Master, is still a child and is focused on mastering the other elements throughout).
But yeah, they're such beasts that even Sozin has to admit, "You may have prevailed on another night..." And while that line is added in this adaptation, it's backed up even in the Original Series by his choice to attack the Air Nomads only with the aid of the comet.

In this series they knew how he got the scar but don't know that he got it by saving them. It adds impact when Iroh later tells them and they call him "their" prince.

This kind of comment is why many streamers/film makers hesitate to take on these projects. No matter how hard they try to be accurate, entertaining, etc, the fandom inevitably whines about it being flawed, not perfect, etc. Point being, if fans keep doing this "I liked it but..." crap, they'll soon find no one will want to make the effort. They don't make things because they expect appreciation from everyone, but mostly because they think its worth it. If people enjoy it and appreciate the effort, neat.. if someone doesn't - they didn't make it for those people.

I’d say it’s good, it’s not great, but it’s miles better than any other hypothetical live action attempt, and I do hope it gets a season 2 because I’m interested to see how the changes they’ve made will affect the plot.
As for the changes, to me most of them range from “I don’t mind” to “I actually like it this way a little better.” Imo it’s like all of those Cinderella adaptations: they kept the important parts the same, and then played around with a lot of the finer details to create their own version of a familiar story. Like they rearranged puzzle pieces to create a similar but new image.

Well I had a chance to binge the entire season and then watch 3 reactions to episode 1. I am glad you put together the first two episodes. The other reactors were so critical about minor things that were different from the original animated series. They knocked on things like Gran Gran's line delivery. This is something I happened to like and recognize as a kind of authentic story telling tone for an elder native American woman. (Enjoyed her performance in Reservoir Dogs as well.) Anyway, I like how much more upbeat you were and how you appreciated the new adaptation for it's differences. I know you will be impressed by what's to come and I have subscribed to your channel so I can watch these along with you. Keep up the good work and positivity. We heard a lot about the changes to Sokka’s character and how his misogyny specifically was taken away. But I mean I can still kinda see it. He tells Katara she should be in the village seeing to her duties rather than water bending. And when Suki shows up in the woods he tells her he can “teach her the basics” with his boomerang. I actually thought this connection with Suki and Sokka was much more natural and even endearing. Being isolated from so much of the world her whole life and focusing all her energy on being a Kyoshi Warrior means she has little experience even being around a boy so on one hand shes intrigued, on another she finds herself attracted to him. Being so isolated and focused however means that she has no idea how to flirt so when she sees that Sokka is interested in warrior culture and her training, she uses that, the main thing she understands, as a way to connect with him and clumsily flirts such as their first sparring session.

Absolutely agree that the animated show vs the film is such a high bar/low bar dichotomy. I think the show is great for what it is - a show created today, where seasons of television have essentially become 8-hour long films. It's not going to have the same narrative beats as the animated series, because it's a different medium and TV has changed so much since the days of 20+ episode season arcs.

This is something I’ve been posting on a few other reactions for the show and I still stand by it:
I’m halfway through the season and I can see how it’s a mixed bag. But I don’t agree with the people saying this is trash. I knew going into it that they were changing things, which helped me manage my expectations better. I do agree with the person who said that it helps to think of this live action version as taking place in a different universe. It means you can separate it more from the animated version. Nothing could ever beat the original, but I’m at least entertained by what I’ve seen so far. It’s not perfect, but I can see what they’re trying to do. My hope is they can learn from the critiques and do better if they get seasons 2 and 3. There’s potential here. The execution right now just misses the mark.

I personally think it’s a refreshing take on the beloved series. The VFX stands out for the most part, contributing to the immersive world-building. The inventive meshing of storylines adds a unique flavor, although the kids' acting falls slightly short of the standard set by shows like Stranger Things. Despite this, it remains serviceable. Zuko and Iroh steal the spotlight with compelling performances, making them the standout characters. The incorporation of the original OST enhances the nostalgia, likely contributing to my overall enjoyment of the series.

I swear, I thought I was gonna have a good time with the fans because we can have a 'reunion' but a lot of people just hating on it not being a 1:1 adaptation with cosplayers that resemble characters... It's so tiring and really sad.
I never went into the live action thinking it SHOULD be this, they SHOULD look like that but it's pretty obvious that despite the flaws, this adaptation was made with love and care. To compare it to M Nights ONG, and say they are equal in quality... I feel so gaslighted into thinking it is bad. And sadly, this will spread like wild fire. I feel 80% who were mad about this adaptation are shallow fans or not fans at all because they came into this hating it. So of course theyd have something to complain about.
It's so bizarre that some of us who have loved this series for more than a decade actually appreciate this attempt by netflix(which is a respectable adaptation), but people who are apparently "experts" bandwagon on shitting on it.

I love the set design, the fight choreography is good, cgi is impressive considering how much they had to use, casting is good, but the most important thing really fell short. It’s like the writers and director missed the lesson on show don’t tell. All the characters say exactly how they feel, drop buckets of poorly entwined exposition, and talk like they’re reading from a script. Sometimes I can’t tell if they’re acting is also bad or it’s solely the script. Aang’s acting especially needs improvement, but he does capture the character so much better than the movie. Either nobody is showing enough emotion, or their emotions come on and off like a light switch. I hope the creators receive the needed criticism about their writing and improve in coming seasons.

I have posted this elsewhere and shall post it other places as I see more reactions. This is what I said on my Facebook page after watching the first two episodes.
It is not the same, but it is good.
Imagine if the events of Avatar the Last Airbender were real and happened 200 years ago. Nobody today was around to see it happen and there are no doubt many histories which may not all agree on every point, depending on who wrote them. So someone today created the animated series to tell the story, and they did a good job of telling it as they understood it. Then later another person does a live action version and they also try to tell the story and do a good job of it, but the two tellings put different emphasis on things and perhaps use different sources for the details and in the end, both tell the story well but neither is perfect telling of it. Neither includes everything that happened because there would be just too much to include it all and some details might be arranged differently to make it all work a docudrama - because in both cases, they are telling it as a story, not as a dry history book.
That is what this is like. If you assume that it was a true story being told by people who only have historic accounts to work with, both tellings are likely to be imperfect but they capture the essence of the history. That's how I choose to see this and on that basis, both are great jobs but they are not identical.
Also like the many tellings of the story of Robin Hood - there are multiple great jobs of telling the story but none of them are the same, just similar. There are also some bad jobs that have been done with Robin Hood - just as Avatar had a bad job done of trying to tell the story in the Movie that Shan't be Named.

@@LeeAra-e2c It's not great compared to season 2, where you have Toph's introduction, Zuko's character development and his relationship with Iron, Azula being set loose and introducing Mai and Ty Lee, The Library, Tales of Ba Sing Se, and introducing lightning, metal and sand bending. Season 1 set up the story really well, but everything interesting in the series happens in season 2, which it sets up the whole narrative of season 3.
It's not really fair to compare the emotional range of a whole show, to the first season of a live adaptation, that also has far less episodes. But even without considering the animation, I was emotionally attached to the live characters from the first episode. I don't know what to tell you, if watching the people of the Air nation being eliminated didn't make you feel anything. The acting, visuals and music is all there, so maybe your expectations just weren't matching up with what you saw? In any regard, the popularity of the live show is enough to make a season 2, so we'll see where it goes.

I'm only four episodes in so far, and I have to say, I don't hate it, which is a huge relief!! Nothing can touch the sheer brilliance of the original animation, but I'm enjoying most of the changes they're making. And it's obviously leagues better than Shyamalan's version! It gives things a different perspective while honoring the source material. Don't get me wrong, it falls into exposition traps, and I disagree with *some* changes--when the writing doesn't quite deliver the intended impact that would have helped the change make sense--but for the most part, I'm enjoying their creativity when it comes to adapting this much-beloved series. 💕 I recommend listening to the entire credits song! It starts off the same as the animation, but then they have a super pretty orchestral rearrangement that jumps in!

From the previous avatar series. Monk Gyatso most probably isn't died because they fire bend him, instead he suck all the air from that region and got suicided himself.
I thought the first avatar state revealing would be more epic.

I’m 2 episodes in, so far I am loving it. It is definitely not exactly like the original, but I love the extra back stories for stuff we knew and how the story is the same but taking some different steps to get there. I can’t wait to watch the rest!!

My biggest criticism of the show is that it *tells* a lot more than it *shows*. We're told a lot of things through dialogue, but they are not really shown.
Some of the other changes aren't so bad, so if they showed more than they told, then the whole thing would benefit.
Also, I feel like they stuffed a lot of refrences and things from later seasons into the first one. It makes me wonder what they are going to do when the story relies on those pieces comes up in the later seasons.

I think people’s expectations were set super high and they wanted a scene for scene adaptation or something more like the one piece adaptation. Although there’s quite a lot of changes, there’s so much more context brought in from the books that you wouldn’t know unless you read the books. It feels like it’s the “missing pieces” and I like the call backs to the series and different episodes. I enjoy the darker tone to the series too. As you said you can feel the gravity of the situation. Although I didn’t love it at first the more I watched I enjoyed the story and the characters and to me it added to the original story not took it away

There's definitely some huge changes coming, and you can't go into this thinking it will be the same thing over again. They've combined a lot of stories, and flipped more stories on their heads. Some of those flipped things have earned me a number of notches on the ugly cry chart. I'm not going to lie, I'm 6 episodes in and I've lost it numerous times. There's some stiff acting in places, don't agree with everything, but holy pig-cow, I can't agree with anyone who says it doesn't have heart. Here's hoping it sticks the finale. 🤞

27:00 for sure, knowing that from Aang's flashbacks of how he used to live with them and just seeing how brutal it was since they never showed that part in the Nickelodeon show is just heartbreaking that it made me cry the whole episode and I can't even process how other reactors didn't even had that much of a reaction cuz I was crying my heart out until the 8th episode when Zuko's flashback scenes were showed knowing that he is what he is bc of u know who which in my opinion was too early I feel like cuz I really wanted to watch this show longer than I would expect it to end but they all just seemed to mash it all up into one

I've only got to watch the first four episodes thus far but I'm really enjoying it. I also like how they made it its own show instead of just doing a play by play. Keeps it fresh so we don't know all what to expect! I watched the first episodes with friends which was a great time, but my one best friend, Avatar was his childhood and he's not really a fan of this version so far. Which is totally okay! But I wanna rewatch on my own so I can determine all my feelings for myself lol.

I think it was very fun to watch. I really enjoyed how they did Zuko, but I'm much less impressed with Azula (and Yue's costume?!). What bothered me most though is the writing for what the characters say. Many scenes would have been better with less words. They often just express sentiments that can be shown with a look and would have been much more impactful that way and every scene was turned into drama. I feel like the drama would hit harder if you get some fun scenes in between where you actually get to love the characters before having them dump their life story on you (This was mainly for the main gang of 3). Other than that though I actually think they did a good job compressing the story so it felt like they still went through a lot a without it feeling too rushed. Many of the costumes and locations looked amazing and most of the cast was great (though the acting directing could've used some work...). I think for both the acting direction and the dialogue it would've really helped if they kept the original authors on board. They really knew how to make you fall in love with the characters. Overall I'm excited to see the second season but I wouldn't call it a great adaptation.

You were quick in getting this out! I know I'm a few days late in responding. Wanted time to watch some of the show myself first. I didn't watch half of the episodes in one day... 😅
I'm always iffy of these live action remakes of beloved tales in hopes that they don't just essentially copy and paste (like Lion King...). This show so far has definitely delivered! I'm loving how yes, you have similarities and it gives you some nostalgia (like the music!), but they are definitely telling more of a story and you can already see more growth in the characters than before.
Of course it's not going to be as good as the original source, yet they are doing such a phenomenal job in really bringing this story to life in a unique way. It's definitely not the silly show for little kids anymore with how brutal the fire nation can be, even within the first 5 minutes of the pilot episode. Things already are seeming more at stake. And yes! I loved how they portrayed Suki and especially Kyoshi! Superb work there!

I love seeing a positive review of this that appreciates what the new medium can bring to the story. Live action is fundamentally different from animation so trying to do a shot for shot remake of the original would not have been a good idea. I thought this was as good as I could have hoped for in a live action ATLA. Live action is not a cartoon and I don't expect it to be. The tone will naturally be more serious and the acting more naturalistic. I also think it looks amazing visually and don't get the critiques of the CGI and VFX. It seems like some people think being snarky or critical makes them look smarter. Not necessarily.
