EV's are a Temporary step towards no private transport at all.
Wife just bought a Volvo XC60 hybrid. Has two screens, heads-up display, navigation can be in one or the other. Slightly larger than her Crosstrek she just sold. Took two trips down to Southern Iowa and averaged 35 MPG and 33 MPG. Super quiet inside and better ride compared to the Crosstrek and a Toyota CRS she had as a loner when Crosstrek was being serviced one time. And it was assembled in Sweden. Hopefully it will be as reliable as the old boxy Volvo wagons.

I have a Polestar 2 for a rental right now and have never driven an electric car before. I will say this thing is a riot, and with regenerative braking I haven’t had to touch the brakes once! Not even slowing down from 60 to 10 to match traffic. I’d definitely consider one if they turn out to be reliable and they get the range up, but this Polestar (Volvo) has no rattles and feels sooooo well built and safe. I’ll be back in my gas car once it’s repaired but I will definitely remember this experience if electric cars catch on.

I have one of these ...excellent Scandinavian understatement. Does everything I want from a car, I have never spent more than 30mins charging and by leasing, my overall motoring costs are £50 a month less than my last diesel Jaguar plus I get 230miles from a full charge. The one Scotty is driving is a MY2023 slight facelift of the first 2021 model. The new MY2024 will now achieve over 300 miles. Superb vehicle in Europe, you are paying for superior build quality and better thought out functions - plus it runs on Android Automotive so has Google Maps built in.

That kind of excessive speeed is seriously serious offence for us .
I doubt the nightmares. Germany invaded Belgium with just a small amount of damage. The SS had a regiment ("Westland") with people from Belgium. During the war most people in Belgium did not suffer under the Germans and after the war a lot went to Germany for work as Germany was in need of working force for rebuild and make friends there.
I was twice in Antwerp and had a talk with some old guys, been to their bookstores. They actually did not fear their bigger neighbour. WWI was quite a different story, but that may be too long ago.

Well, electric motors have great low-end torque, and that usually means a car with wonderful acceleration. That’s a big part of the fun!

Scotty you are an absolute riot! I laughed more in the last 10 min than I have in the last 10 weeks. As much as you don't like Ev's I was surprised how much you loved this Volvo. Looks like a beautiful car though,

An interesting comparison would be if you could review one built in Belgium and one built in China side by side.
Chevy Volt is a hybrid discontinued in 2019. Stay away from Hybrids. They're terrible.

I think that was actually a good thing as far as he is concerned. Its Mexico, China and some others he wouldn't like so much.
My Nissan Leaf has been un-useable in the shop for the last 15 months waiting for a battery cell they no longer make. No way I'm replacing the entire battery for $10k on the POS. Screw electric. I just got a Mazda MX-5 ND2 RF manual and having more fun on the road than I ever thought possible. Thanks Scotty for steering me right!!
Nissan products are crap anyway. I don't know what made you to buy from them.
Old leafs didn't have a cooling system on the battery leading to premature failures. All EVs have a cooling system now

scotty would love an old T5. the thing about volvos, you can read about the engine and the horsepower but that feeling they give you when you drive them, that's not measurable.

My cousin recently bought an Chinese middle priced EV. It absolutely fits his driving style- pedal to the metal almost every time. He destroyed any kind of transmission on all previous cars he had. So maybe EV is the best choice for him, but time will tell.

There is no doubt for acceleration ev is where it’s at. That said, I made sure to get a hemi charger before they discontinued them. The hk audio is great. I don’t like the wool seats in the Volvo, lots of static shocks. The battery is not going to last and will cost a car to replace. It runs on almost half coal and 35% oil and gas, so it’s not green. I just don’t see how evs will stick around, especially with the windmill companies shutting down and people don’t want nuclear power plants. Poor little kids mining for cobalt in deep dark holes. I’d prefer to spend a few k replacing an engine every decade. The future solution is unknown as of yet.
Batteries have an 8 year warranty. And all evidence points to EV batteries lasting longer than ICE engines so far. Very little degradation at 100k miles. EVs become greener on average than ICE cars at around 16k miles. New Batteries use little to no Cobalt and there's no evidence of children mining it any more.
@charleskidder7001 ya but batteries can also rapidly degrade or just stop taking a charge etc. A maintained engine can easily last 20+ years. I don't see batteries doing that especially in Canada and the north east US where we deal with winter. I'll keep my ICE.

Hydrids using super capacitors.. would be somewhere I might start.
With super capacitors, they have lower capacity than batteries, but they also dont really degrade over time. They also can charge super fast, if the infrastructure supported it..
I mean, if you put down 2k and then pay 600 a month, you get a car daily for a price of fancy coffe. So not a bad deal at all.

The most mental ev ive driven (i pre delivery inspection vehicles for a living) was a genisis gv70 with the boost button. Ive driven ionic 5, 6, kona ev, genisis gv 60 and full electric genisis g90 and it feels like the electric gv70 with the boost button is the quickest. Also theres so much torque from the gv60s they have a recall for axel replacment because people are snapping them lmfao. Way too much power for human beings imo.
Tesla Model S Plaid is still the fastest production vehicle. 0-60 in just under 2s. I think it's now under $100k.
@@KidHorn7001No need to go that far the MG4 XPower is 1/2 a second quicker to 100km/h and less than 1/2 the price if speed is all you are after. Both the model 3 LR with performance boost and m3P are also quicker.

Electric cars just don’t make financial sense, for private persons, that is, if the car is not owned by a company. Also, practically everyone leases electric cars because of the question mark that hangs over the longevity of the batteries. A friend of mine has (had) an older Mitsubishi electric car. One of the cells of the battery pack died, and, being an engineer, he replaced it himself. However the Mitsubishi dealerships then refused to re-install/update the software. Now he is unable to use the vehicle.. and it now stands in a barn gathering dust.
Bought a used electric car in Germany this year and they gave me the fuel warranty of 8 years and 160.000 km on top. Almoust all electric cars in Germany come with 8 years warranty. Lexus now offers one with 10 years.
VW offers on their ICE just 2-5 years in Germany, others up to 7. I think this is a silent hint about how durable BEVs are. A battery going bad is quite rare, but I seen a lot of engines (VWs TFSi for exapmle) or gearboxes which go bad on quite young cars.

It’s a really high quality vehicle and high performance EV with only the flaw of very limited range of travel. Im hoping that the entire industry fixes that substantially in less than five years.

My 2002 F-150 with a V8 can travel 500 miles consistently on a full tank of gas. I will stay on oil.
When it comes to CO2 go look up Patrick T. Brown a climate expert.
You know, it's fair to criticize what's in front of you but not every Tesla has build quality issues, a vast majority is still built using robotics which may or may not be a problem, they are pushing car numbers exceeding major brands which probably attributes to complications of quality with a shortage of us workers, not Chinese or Belgium, or Chinese working as expat slave labor which Europe habitually exploits, and a Tesla is half the price of this vehicle at base.
60 grand is over 20k the medium American wage. Tons of factors, conditions and facts Scott leaves out for whatever reason with quite the bias against the leading manufacturer of American electric vehicles.
At that monthly lease and price point you might as well double it and grab that electric Porsche.
With the Battery Electric cars it is not the miles that will kill it it is the battery as it age and being charged de charged over the years.. will the battery last 8 or 10 or 12 years? And what do you do when the battery is gone? Doubt anyone will spend the money on a new battery when the car is 8 10 or 12 years old at $20k

I think hydrogen is the way to go, clean, no big toxic batteries, I work for company that makes cng cylinders, we are retooling to make hydrogen cylinders, Toyota will be one of our 1st customers
Trying to charge electric vehicles in flushing queens is a nightmare. My wife owns same Volvo. We rent a garage stall. We were parking car in it and told we could not charge car in it. Next day told couldn't park car in garage or on property. Fire hazard.

In many parts of the USA solar panels can generate electricity. And many Americans have enough space (large houses / roofs etc). Ideal for electric vehicles, and house airco systems.
I'm sure you have driven the 1993/94 Mazda Rx 7 twin turbo. Now that's a fun car.
RX-2 Coupe and an RX-3 wagon. The wagon was a better drag car though.

Ford. On a Rotary the entire engine needs dissasembly. Not just cylinder head removal. Pita.
@@fromthebackofmymind We aren't talking about the same thing I don't think. I'm not talking longevity, I am saying that the Mazda Rx7 twin turbo with a 6 spd manual was a fun car. That is all. I have built some seriously fast cars and this little Mazda was stock and would walk sideways at 100 mph just under acceleration. No clutching it, just winding it up. IDk about an Rx 2 or any wagon. But thanks for the input.
Currently having issues with my 2012 jeep liberty (I know the issue is it’s a liberty)
The main issue is the transmission is slipping slightly when I have to speed up and it sometimes gets very stiff backing up from being at a standstill.
I know it’s a shot in the dark but I am very open to ideas for anyone who has experienced this.
You could try taking out a quart of the fluid and putting in a quart of Lucas Transmission Stop Slip.
Have you changed the transmission fluid at all before?

I live near the Volvo plant in Belgium (Ghent), one of the biggest employers from the region.
As a consequence, you see these cars and the sister model XC40 so to say on every corner of the streets.
I knew Belgium had an Opel and a Ford plant which closed. Is this one of those factories??? And is it now a Volvo plant? Or like Valmet in Finland or Nedcar in Nederland which are not owned by manufacturer?
@@astafford8865 good question, Ford site in Genk is succesfully reconversed. For the former Opel plant in the port of Antwerp are mostly vague plans. We now still have Volvo in Ghent and Audi in Brussels (E-tron variants).
More of those cars on the road and the traffic fatalities are going to increase greatly.
agree. EVs too fast, n the batteries explode, n car catches on fire.....while driving, and / or charging.
@@jkeelsncHow about using software to slow down acceleration. The instant torque and such quick acceleration are what will cause accidents. Because people aren't used to it.
Finally, scotty you did it, no mention of "Toyota". I own a couple of Volvos, a v70 station wagon with 325 k with the same engine and transmission with no issues whatsoever., and a S60 T8 plugin in hybrid with a Polestar tune. What can I say, you're absolutely right. This thing scares the heck out of me. Before you know it, and unintentionally, you're over the speed limit. I drove it for 7K miles, and I only filled one tank and half so far with absolutely no range anxiety.
Don't confuse people by saying that 60% of electricity comes from non-renewables/petrochemicals. Focus on equivalence. The amount spent on electricity vs how many miles the vehicle can travel. If it's equivalent to 115mpg then you are greener than a car that gets 31mpg, and they're still fun to drive.
I am from Germany and was in Belgium twice. Had a nice hotel in Antwerp, dran 5 different kinds of Belgian beer and came to the conclusion that the Begians are the better Germans.

Scotty free advice do not I repeat do not park it inside your garage incase it catches fire or you'll loose your garage and if it's attached to your house loose your house as well as other people have found out the hard way if it can happen to an ev from Mercedes it can happen to a Volvo ev as well as it's new tech for them like it is for all car company's just getting into ev production

Scotty, I could go 110 MPH down a highway all day long in my 1988 Volvo 240 DL station wagon(600,000 miles, and gave it away still runing), "cornering", not a high point of the car, but solid, and didn't feel "dangerous" at all.

Range is not all that important if charging infrastructure is built out. That's why nobody asks what range is for gas cars. There are gas stations everywhere.

Trying to contemplate how someone was smart for getting a car lease. Then it's an EV. Then it's a Volvo. Then it's overpriced. There was nothing smart about this.

I concur. My first PC was a windows95 chinese knockoff. The Pentium I Cpu's fan failed in the first month.

EVs have been available for 10 or so years now. Think they've found and fixed the bugs. They're actually more reliable on average than gas cars now. Fewer things that can go wrong. Most issue are software related and can typically be fixed via software downloads.
