Scotty! Here’s a little inside info on the GM light truck rear end / front end differentials. GM sold American Axel to the company that took the manufacturing to Mexico. Now when it was American Axel, they did a partial pre-assembly of the Ring and Pinion gears and punched marked them so they new exactly which teeth had to match up. They then lapped in the ring and pinion to make them a matched set. After the set was lapped into tight tolerance, the set was dis-assembled, cleaned and final assembled to the punched marks they had been lapped into. Now when the assembly went to Mexico, they still lapped In The ring & pinion gears, but without the punch marks to match them back up. So after they were lapped, dis-assembled and cleaned, when they put them back together for final assembly the units have a mix-matched set, which have an oscillation of various degrees depending how out of match they are put back together. This resulted in so many warranty claims, GM brought back the differential production to Grand Rapids, Michigan where they completely refurbished 1/2 of a GM plant. To your point, all about profits.

The radio being mounted vertically was also just plain dumb. Did they really think any aftermarket companies would design a stereo for such a piece of junk? The radio was AM only. Honda or Toyota or don't bother, had just about everything over the years and these 2 manufacturers are the only 2 that have proven long term durability with sensible maintenance and running costs.

Pre-Renault Nissans, Mazdas, and Hyundai (preferably 2000's and early 2010's models) are all modern, good choices that don't hurt the wallet, nor do they break down as much. The hand-crafted German vehicles and old Volvos are also decent choices, but they're all pretty old now, but they're decent if you don't mind the age.

*whiny voice* "oh but they're so expensive to buy new or used! Chevy/Kia/etc is cheaper!" "yeah, because they have no resale value because they're lower/much lower quality"

My Fords have been as good as my Toyotas. Including the 80's Toyotas. Less rust, and more fun as well. I mean yeah if you had an Aspire or a Tempo or a Contour those sucked. My 94 Probe GT would whup Scotty's Celica as well.

Not if you keep paying for it just to keep it running. True value is expensive but comes with high reliability and low cost of ownership.

My grandpa had a 1975 Fiat 128 for 5 years and put 100k without an issue. My father, when stationed in Germany in the 90's had a souped up 1980 Fiat 131 Abarth for 2 years. Speaks fondly of it and on occasion amuses us with the wroom wroom and squealing tires sounds...

I remember the GM motor mount recall but I believe they use steel cable not a chain to patch the problem.
At least it was that way on the ones I saw.

Some years ago I was around a Oldsmobile VP of something or other and he said we as Americans “have to” buy GM even though they made lower quality vehicles otherwise the company would fail and it was too big of a company to fail.

I have been driving a '93 Dodge Ram D-150 for almost twenty years. It has a 3.9 liter V-6. I blew the tranny almost 10 years ago, replaced it and I have replaced the water pump twice but by and large, it has been a very reliable truck.
