In the last 4 years, I've travelled to PI four times. I found a great woman and now currently live here for the last 9 months. All of your points are good, I guess. It just depends on your personality and what your expectations are. Everything official is printed in English. The thing that I find most disrupting is the heat, with that additional killer element, the humidity. Most malls and Govt buildings have AC. Believe me you WILL have it in your home. The food here is pretty basic, either loaded with sugar or salt. I don't live in a tourist area so I'm typically the only American around, but that's cool for me. The amenities, those things that would make your stay here most enjoyable are available. High speed internet, Solar systems, etc Health care is available but you cannot use your Medicare here. All in all, it is what I expected, and I plan to stay. The wealth disparity is stark, but that just means our dollars go ALOT further. That's a win. PH is LOADED with hotties. Depending on what you are looking for, you might find you like it. Hell, California wasn't perfect, I assure you. I lived there for 20 years....

I'm not familiar with walking Makati, but I walk 10-12km nightly in BGC. Unless it's raining. Never had any kind of issues. I stumbled and fell on a dark sidewalk nearly midnight. The passing cars stopped and pedestrians crossed the street to help me up (I'm old and disabled). I got up and people got back in their cars after helping me. That doesn't happen in America. Been here 2 years, no regrets.

Loving this list. I would add that if you're a glass half empty personality--or you are quick to anger or criticize, or are very impatient--you may find certain aspects of life in the Philippines difficult. Arrive with the attitude that you will be calm, go with the flow and interact with your fellow human beings respectfully and positively. Often you should not complain even when you have every right to, because it will be considered disrespectful--not just by the person you are complaining to, but by everyone else around you.

Something for those considering the move.. Once you get tired of the huge malls and plethora of restaurants; There aren't a lot of things to do in Manila. BGC and Makati are nice, but the reality of 15 million people, most of whom are very poor, sets in. Everything is dense. Even higher end neighborhoods have tightly packed houses and narrow streets. The people are the best part of Manila. And the best parts of the Philippines are outside of metro Manila.

What a lot of rubbish I have been coming to the Philippines since 2001 and currently have been invited by a Filipino family to volunteer at the local Presbyterian church with free accommodation. The family including the mother who was valedictorian at University was a teacher of English at a Secondary school for 17yrs, then worked at the local Mayors office for 27 yrs now retired.
I have been here almost a year now and its a wonderful experience to be invited into a Filipino family. I am living in a smaller city 320klm south of Manila.
My previous time in the Philippines was for nearly three years in Muntinlupa mentoring a group of inmates on both Bilibid and Medium security prison in the Toastmasters system for public speaking as they were studying at University level to become Church Pastors.

lived here 13 years permanently now still, this video is very disingenuous - it isn’t walkable in most places unless you consider walking in the road as mostly there are no sidewalks, food prices for mcdonald’s big mac value meal is 278 pesos just under $5 USD. Most expats will admit the novelty takes a few years to wear off, but, they will also explain to you difficulties dealing with locals once they realize you are not a tourist and you have no desire to just give away money. If you go to an area and are not related to someone from there, and it is not a tourist spot, be cautioned. There is a reason the US department of state has a travel caution for the Philippines. Videos like this cause many to come totally unprepared. There are many good things, but a lot has permanently changed since the pandemic and I see more and more youtubers hyperinflating the good qualities while missing important marks concerning safety and downsides - which there are many.

I went to Manila in the summer and I like how much cooler, less humid it is than places like Texas and Florida. The filipinos were dropping like flies from heat exhaustion when I went to Enchanted Kingdom. I felt relieved to get away from the Phoenix heat and cool off. What should be pointed out is, the mall that has 999 on the outside sells cheap stuff, isn't worth it. I got 3 pairs of shoes, Adidas and Nike Air Jordans. Sounds great but they only lasted 6 weeks each. The padding on the bottom is paper thin. Not worth the 1300 php.

All points well taken. I’m a local, but been to most metro areas abroad as well. Philippines is no more dangerous than any of them, but has a good proportion of peace loving, patient and faithful people. Poverty exists in droves, so are the crazy rich. You got everything here, just don’t be stupid, don’t rely too much on anyone or the government, and you’ll have a fine even wonderful time. I can live anywhere, but choose to stay here. I live and will die in my home country.

Mostly true, or at least once a day, every day, for long stretches of May-December. That's when there isn't a typhoon passing through. The dry season tends to get very hot by March-April-May, in Luzon, so that really is no improvement, and people begin hoping the rainy season comes early.

I think the title should be DON'T GO TO THE PHILIPPINES..( UNPREPARED) I see so many people going to the Philippines with no plans and no extra money...in the past a guy would sell his house in the US ...let's just say for $200,000 ...he would build a house for $100,000 and have $100,000 in savings and live off his pension.. retirement or SSI ..there was no need to even touch the savings account..it's SAD People go to the Philippines and never buy property or a house...they live paycheck to paycheck just like in the US...

This is very much a matter of taste. You will need patience and you will have to deal with often distressing realities - poverty, dirt, traffic (not mentioned is horrible Manila vehicular traffic - even just Makati-BGC), flooding, and the often disheveled state of buildings, private or public- look folks, its a poor country, and it shows. If you have the grit to deal, it can be charming and wonderful. But its not for everyone.
