Let’s keep it real. The cost of living in the Philippines is only going to keep rising and as a result your money doesn’t go as far and the citizens there will become more desperate for money making you a mark everywhere you go. Who wants to live thinking everyone is out to get them, whether it’s true or not? Don’t get me started on everything else.
I'm guessing he watches Peter Zeihan's geopolitics channel. Repeated a lot of his assertions. I agree he's probably tired and won't admit it. I'm never going to understand this kneejerk empathy towards the Philippines. I first visited 20 years ago and it was much different. The men especially were much more friendly and I think it's time to accept that they do view foreign men as competition now. You can feel the vibe shift with the men, and even some women. There are something like 300 countries in the world and all but a handful of them would be expensive for a well-to-do American. It's probably time to start looking at some other spots. PH feels played out. But he is right about the threat level there. It's the most exposed place on the planet to natural disasters. If something really shitty ever did happen, maybe a super volcano that plunges earth into cooling like the last time that happened in 1851, or god forbid something even worse, I cannot think of a worse place to be stuck. Especially when you could be stuck in the best place being as a US citizen. The US is nearly self sufficient. You just have to make plans to defend what you have, which is the case everywhere. But living in a US city would be a huge mistake in any scenario like that.

Paul, there are some people in the world who when you ask for the "time of day" they tell you how to build a watch. You found one of those in the boonies of PI.
He seems like a decent guy, but gets A LOT of things wrong. Where to begin? "The Chinese are poor." - Yes, they're GDP per capita is 1/6 of the US. But they have the largest economy in the world by PPP which provides a more accurate measure of living standards. In their 1st tier cities living standards are comparable to the West. "Their first aircraft carrier was a cruise ship, they put a deck on it." - No. He's referring to the Liaoning. It's a Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier that they purchased from the Russians. The Chinese have 3 carriers not '1 and a half'. "They have 600 vessels, we have like 200" - No. The US Navy has 415 vessels, the Chinese PLAN has 714 - but most are smaller costguard ships or patrol boats and none of their ships are of comparable quality to the US Navy. "Taiwan is a big thing, but they're going after the Spratlys for the oil." - They don't need a war to do that. They're already drilling for oil in the Spratly's. They've constructed 70 artificial islands in the South China Sea to facilitate and defend their operations. "China has a deep history of rebellions." - Yes and No. The average Chinese dynasty lasts a few centuries. The CCP aren't going anywhere anytime soon. "China's ageing population will lead to collapse in 10 years." - Every country faces the same problem. He doesn't factor in things like AI and automation that will replace much of the human workforce. Most of the green tech including EV's are being made in China. They've bet the farm on it. The Chinese want Taiwan for 3 reasons. 1) China is vulnerable to blockade and so they need to dominate the first island chain. Taiwan is integral to that. As General McArthur said, "it's an unsinkable aircraft carrier in the South China sea. 2) They see the 1949 Chinese Civil War as unresolved and its existential for them. 3) Taiwan has the most advanced chip industry in the world and they would love to control it. A US think tank in Washington estimated a 50% chance of 'some sort' of conflict between the US and China before 2045. They've already been in a trade war since 2016 so its a possibility but not for the reasons he suggests.
China also builds some of the best electric cars in the world. They are also the main supplier of batteries around the world. Look at BYD, they are self sufficient, they make their own parts.
US GDP is 25% of the total world's GDP. China's GDP is 17%, having grown 7% in just 5 years. We need to watch out: the cross-over point cannot be too far away.
Not a terrible idea as the martian mhm exchange rate is great right now. However, you do realize you can't own property there right? It would be in your martian wife's name.
I live in Taiwan, I was in the US Coast Guard for 20 years and worked alot with the Navy. He is being nervous about nothing. First he doesn't understand Chinese mentality. They are just making noise. They can't invade and if they even try their economy will absolutely tank. He's overthinking stuff things. Hell, he has a higher chance to get hit by a car or scooter in Asia the the invasion.
Economys flounder and suffer, not becaus of a negative event but rather the possibility of that event. Regardless, people see Cina's provocation of the Philippines and wonder if maybe Thailand is a better retirement option. The internal political turmoil regarding the empeachment of VP Duterte, is a serious matter that can bring political instability and the subsequent impact on tourism, foreign investment, and tourism to name just three.

so bottom line you got termites, no problem. termites rely on wood. hire a carpenter to go up in the attic and one by one trade all the attic coco lumber for metal 2x4's. carpenter makes a few pesos per day, metal 2x4 real cheap, capenter can estimate that cost. for a few hundred bucks end of problem.
I spent 13 months in the PI and decided it wasn’t for me at all. I really really wanted to like that place and did my best to make it work. It just didn’t. I am back in the states and so grateful that I have the option to simply get on a plane and leave that mess behind. I feel so bad for people who can’t. Thank god for my American passport.
Just a thought….you should have tried some of the neighboring countries while you were in that region. I visited the PI right before the pandemic (January/February 2020) and knew within a few days it was not for me. I lean more toward the Latin American region and explored most of the countries before I settled on Colombia (not the expat areas). At least you actually got on a plane and went there 🤷🏻♂️
@ I have been to over 80 countries and every country in Asia. I spent over four years there. I also spent nearly a decade going through ALL of Latin America. I can say unequivocally and without hesitation that the PI was the absolute worst of them all time ten. My one year there was the loneliest and unhappiest time of my life. I would rather go back to Iraq and Afghanistan during the height of the war for green than get paid to be back in the PI. It was so horrifically awful there.
@ retired. I joined when bill Clinton was in office and retired when Donald J Trump was going in. I did six tours in the Middle East. I would rather be in Iraq than the PI. It was so unbelievably awful I get PtSD just thinking about it. If you don’t drink, smoke, or do drugs and don’t like to gossip incessantly and or tear people down then you will be lonely likely you never knew there.
Jerry G.... The Philippines is the country of Filipinos and it doesn't matter for them that you like it or not. I am living in south east Asia for 35 years and these countries really don't need the judgement of western countries...
The technique of gold salesmen too, the world is always about to end. But look at termites, when you kick over their ant-hill they are back in business a week later. Humans are the same. Try selling your block of gold in Mad-Max land
Reminds me of the movie Airplane where the guy talked so much telling his story, that everyone next to him killed themselves. Made it to 12 and a half minutes, and can't take it anymore listening to Col. Sanders. I'll wait for your next video.
Good video Paul, great guest. I appreciate the sharing of his opinions balanced by the stoic chill of yourself. The friendly banter was also enjoyable 👍
And I thought the guys who tell me, with my 3 COVID vaccines I got, my cars navigation system would be better now! Or the guys who told me that the government could now track my movements. Seriously? Do Americans lose some marbles when they hit 50? 😂
This guy is one of the major reasons that I left america. His arrogance and privilege is glaring not to mention his fear based analysis. WoW ! I feel for his partner.
@@Photojouralist123china is absolutely massive and you think you got an accurate picture from the tiny part you saw? The demographic thing is definitely a huge problem and they are increasingly aggressive toward South China Sea countries. So he’s not necessarily wrong here.
When I was growing up in the 70's it was predicted that we would soon have a major water problem, the oil supply was going to be gone in 40 years, global cooling would be freezing us over, and, of course, get under your desk because we are all going to die from nuclear war. I can't imagine being a grandpa and still falling for these dooms day scenarios. When you get older you understand that there are problems and sure, something very bad can happen, but living according to this is a fools error. And if I was, for some strange reason, retired and giving a FK about geopolitics, I'd take one look at the US national debt (which can not be paid) and the perpetual war machine before considering that I wanted to double my cost of living and move there. Now to give his thoughts some credit, when I started looking at retiring to PH I did think about the Chinese tensions and the possible Taiwan situation. As a prudent man, you would want a pantry of food and water plus cash under the mattress in case the banks go down for some months, but if global sh!t goes down then nowhere is "safe." My final point is that he is not considering his immediate and IMO highest risk. Filipina and American divorce rate is 25% And, a K1 visa puts him financially responsible to her for 10 years. His risk of heart break and significant financial cost for alimony is higher than any Chinese dooms day scenario. I'll be officially a grandpa next year. I'll be 62 and retiring. I want to be happy and healthy and will place almost all my thought into protecting my heart and my money because the risk of taking a hit to those, perhaps too late to recover in old age, is too significant to gamble with.
The whole 'war with China' thing seems like a bit of red herring. Yes, it's a low-moderate risk in the next decade (although not for the reasons he says). But it's all just a bit abstract. I suspect he came to find a partner, he's done that and now he wants to take her home. Simple as that.
Great deduction, I'm definitely not buying his story. From tropical PH, which he loves, apparently, back to freezing cold Montana, no way. Does his poor wife know what to expect? Why not just move to Thailand or Vietnam, etc?
Video summary: I was finally ready to settle down and came to the Philippines to find a quality, traditional woman and I prefer living in the advantages of my home country. Seems like a nice guy. Pretty much what he's talking about is this. Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times
Yes, his point is that many American expats in the Philippines are weak men: many left America because they cannot afford to live there. So those who are well to do should go home to enjoy the rest of their lives in comfort with good healthcare, infrastructure and safety (on the roads, etc)
Paul, please tell your friend the US is a third-world country massive migration, and the homeless communities in all the major cities is embarrassing . We are sending billions to other countries while people are dying in the streets, our infrastructure is crumbling, and inflation is out of control. The average family can not afford to live in their own country . Guys, I'm going to the Philippines, see you soon.

by far your most interesting vlog and guest presently, i follow world affairs and this particular vlog has enlightened me further on this subject. can you do a part 2 where he explains his theory about obesity? what is his background? so one of my takeaways from this vlog is - after people get wind of this the property values in the philippines will drop because of the possibility of war, and it will drop even further because ph is headed for an economic slump within 18 months
property values have risen in the last quarter of 2024 based on bank listings, many of it has doubled. so if hes correct they will drop again sometime in 2026 if the china situation doesnt drop it first
People always want to think they are more important than they really are. When he opened his dialog with - "I solved the problem" - I knew he was a nut job like me. I've got no time for people's filibusters on how they've got the inside info - and how people should listern to them.
i believe him, it has already been solved, not by him but some scientists and doctors have already solved it in the past decade, its just that big pharma and big food spend billions to bury the correct science data. low carb or carnivore is the future as it was in the past for millions of years
@CharlesWhite-j4f ...I thought some of the stuff he talked about was on point. And some of the things weren't correct, but to break everything down would take to long. But I see all the negative comments on this guy...which didn't shock me. Americans are to busy sitting in sports bars and worrying about football games and baseball scores. And then when they lose their jobs, because it went overseas or their Union gets busted or weakened...then they start crying in their beers because they weren't informed in what was happening in their own backyard. Just like the trillions America spent on these crazy wars that accomplished nothing accept make a handful of the 'right people' rich from war profits. And yet the healthcare system...infrastructure...higher education...childcare...social security...so forth, are all in dire straits. Americans don't like to look at reality, and when somebody touches on it they makes excuses to ignore it.
To be fair it's obvious to anyone paying attention that ultra processed foods are causing obesity. Problem is all the huge corporations that depend on selling trillions of dollars of year of ultra processed foods are obfuscating that message. This guy is selling a bs course to make money off the problem....
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about..China is not poor anymore. The country has been able to eradicate extreme poverty and has a growing middle class. It's no longer a 'shoes and shirts' workforce (as Paul said), but rather a very skilled one, able to manufacture complex and sophisticated products.
Most likely won't happen but if you pay attention to what is going around the world, you wouldn't blame some people being paranoid. I can list 5 on top of my head that's happening around the world that might make you think
This guy looks like he's in his 70s... he should be enjoying what's left of his life. He'll be 6ft under if there is a population collapse. Which probably won't happen anytime soon since AI has increased productivity and efficiency.
Your guest today would be the last guy in the world I would ever want to go have coffee with or a beer. I didn't know how uneducated I was until he told me. I'm guessing he lives alone.
This is the very man that I would enjoy sitting and having coffee with and just chatting. He makes me think of the old adage, if you are the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.
This is a prime example of why I love your channel so much called. You always have the most interesting and intelligent guest on your program. We are very much alike, I do not panic easily and I turned 80 years old this month by the grace of God.
Jason’s claims about China’s manufacturing capabilities and the likelihood of war with the U.S. oversimplify complex realities. While China’s manufacturing has historically been low-skill, it has significantly advanced in sectors like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Militarily, China compensates for traditional weaknesses with asymmetric strategies, such as hypersonic weapons and cyber capabilities. His assertion that demographic collapse and economic strain will lead to war ignores China’s adaptability and the shared interest in avoiding conflict due to economic interdependence. Small skirmishes, like those in the South China Sea, are unlikely to escalate into full-scale war, as both nations have historically prioritized restraint.
He could have told us why he's leaving in two minutes. Instead, he babbles on and on about his amateur opinion of world politics. Could you find a dryer subject...no.
Yo Paul ! What’s going on brother ?? I can confirm the skilled trade shortage. I’m 54 and run a maintenance department for a university and I cannot find any skilled labor. All of them have NO or little experience at all.
Wasn't there a point in your life you had no skills, no experience? Someone has to give a first shot and train them... Why not you? That's the problem, everybody wants the low hanging fruit. If your University or company is not willing to take in people without experience and train them, they are part of the problem and don't get to bitch.

There are a million things that could force any foreigner out of the Philippines. It sounds like over justification of something he was going to do anyway. He may have a point but has totally missed the mark on Chinese politics. Their main philosophy can be summarized by reading and comprehension of “The Art of War” by General Sun Tzu. This applies to competition and conflict in general, on every level from the interpersonal to the international. Its aim is invincibility, victory without battle, and unassailable strength through understanding the physics, politics, and psychology of conflict. A more accurate understanding of the Chinese mindset would be “The Art of Not Going to War Unless You Really Can’t Avoid It And Then Still Avoiding Fighting as Much as Possible. So with utmost respect to your guest; he does not understand the Chinese political system and their philosophy.
Jason. How did you solve obesity? My two nieces work in that field. They run and own their own clinic. I have a good idea myself but am interested in what you come up with.
I remember a guy who had his "13 keys" and made predictions about the election. Jason reminds me a lot of him. I wonder what Jason's track record is on his predictions?
Don't make the BIG MISTAKE of bringing your Filipina back home ! China and the Philippines might be a problem but for sure your Filipina will be YOUR PROBLEM in the USA! She will look for a better deal no matter how good she has it in your home country !
This is what I consider a high quality ex-pat discussion, very interesting hearing about the geopolitical issues that are potentially affecting this region, enjoyed this discussion very much. I do wonder if the advent of hypersonic missiles will render a large navy obsolete.
I really didnt get whynhes leaving the Phillipines even when I jumped to the end. Whats the gist of why hes leaving, sounded like he was expecting WWIII?
In 2017, I had a period of mystical psychic visions, which included seeing the pandemic before it happened. During that time, I had a vision of hundreds of warships all facing the coastline near Manila. I'll assume it was the Chinese, since they have expressed intentions. I think there will be a stand off between China and the USA over the Philippines. This likely will occur if the USA gets more involved in the Ukraine or Israel situations. I don't think a war will result, China will back off when the USA flexes. Most of my visions have come to fruition, and this is one of the few pending ones.
My opinion is that the rest of the world will never let that happen. Both eastern and western countries are already conducting joint military exercises in the region to "warn" China against any act of war. But it is interesting what he said about a "cowboy" captain being the "spark." And I've been wondering what China's "end game" was in doing this...distraction of their populus provides a logical explanation. Also interesting are his takes on the well-documented demographic issues in various places in the world.

2024, US GDP: 29 Tril, China: 18 Tril ..
@@jbuzzyMaking batteries and electric cars has very little to do with this topic.

Fantastic! In the first 30 seconds he managed to insult pretty much everyone and tell us how much smarter he is than everyone else.
There’s probably some truth to that, but better to keep it to yourself. (After 2 minutes listening to this guy, I fell asleep).
As a prudent man, you would want a pantry of food and water plus cash under the mattress in case the banks go down for some months, but if global sh!t goes down then nowhere is "safe."
My final point is that he is not considering his immediate and IMO highest risk.
Ya never know, stupider things than minor regional wars have happened. Always have a plan B.
Great deduction, I'm definitely not buying his story. From tropical PH, which he loves, apparently, back to freezing cold Montana, no way. Does his poor wife know what to expect? Why not just move to Thailand or Vietnam, etc?

Yes, his point is that many American expats in the Philippines are weak men: many left America because they cannot afford to live there. So those who are well to do should go home to enjoy the rest of their lives in comfort with good healthcare, infrastructure and safety (on the roads, etc)
Paul, please tell your friend the US is a third-world country massive migration, and the homeless communities in all the major cities is embarrassing . by far your most interesting vlog and guest presently, i follow world affairs and this particular vlog has enlightened me further on this subject. can you do a part 2 where he explains his theory about obesity? what is his background? so one of my takeaways from this vlog is - after people get wind of this the property values in the philippines will drop because of the possibility of war, and it will drop even further because ph is headed for an economic slump within 18 months
Can't really buy it and hard to sell it. So.........
property values have risen in the last quarter of 2024 based on bank listings, many of it has doubled. so if hes correct they will drop again sometime in 2026 if the china situation doesnt drop it first

i believe him, it has already been solved, not by him but some scientists and doctors have already solved it in the past decade, its just that big pharma and big food spend billions to bury the correct science data. low carb or carnivore is the future as it was in the past for millions of years

Man, this guy is unbelievably ignorant about China. It's obvious he has never been to China.
My opinion is that the rest of the world will never let that happen.
