BGC is the fanciest part of Manila. Explore Manila's slums if you want to see the 3rd world reality of the Philippines. It's heartbreaking but normal for most Filipinos.

Expats from different countries and I don't blame them. If you can live in a place for half to a third of the cost where you can have almost all of what the western nation can provide, why not? But BGC is not all Philippines, well in fact BGC is not all of Taguig City or Metro Manila. We have serious third world problems, no doubt about it, but it's HOME.

@@walterdayrit675 Even in America there are lots of people who are homeless, beggars, and drug addicts lying on the sidewalks, that's the reality of Uncle Sam, is it normal to most Americans? FYI, there's no perfect country in the entire world, I would rather live in a third-world country full of smiles, and hospitality, than in a first-world-class country like in the West & Europe full of hate, discrimination, and racist.

When I was in Manila I went for a walk in Tondo and felt completely safe.
No place is perfect but I get tired of so called first world countries acting like they are the best place ever.
I’ve spent plenty of time all over America and the U.K. plus Europe and have family in 9 countries on 4 continents.
I’ll take the Philippines 🇵🇭 over all of them 100% !!
It’s not just the cost of living but more the people than anything else.

Me and my husband are already retired in US. Our income is more than enough to live in the Philippines. The development in the Philippines is too fast. We are planning to buy condo unit in the City and construct a vacation home in the province where we can find helpers to take care of us. US is too expensive for Seniors right now. Philippines is not third world anymore, the GDP in that Country is leading in South east Asia.

My advice for you and your sweet senior husband is to get him Philhealth first thing in philipinese then to have 10,000 US dollars 💵 untouched for medical emergency, in Philippines the medical care system has skin tax in place, your husband most like will be overcharged for every thing , if you manage to fly your husband out of Philippines to either Guwam or Vietnam, you will save 80% of what would you pay in philipinese for health care plus he will be treated in far better facilities than the one in Philippines, the medicen in Philippines is Crazy expensive, bring at least 3 months supply, in Philippines they really humiliate those who can’t afford their medical bills such as tie them to the bed and confiscate their passports and seized their assets , I am talking from experience, take care and God bless .

BGC shouldn't be the Main basis of "being developed" as what described by foreigners. It's a small city in Manila, they don't showcase Filipino Culture ,restaurants and Cafe came from Western Influences, Italian Pasta ? Wolfgang Steak ? Ramen ? Where 's the filipino Spirit ?come on man .
Business owned by Foreign Corporations most of them at least . . It Is is created for " Consumerism " and Foreign Infrastructures which mostly foreign expats can benefit but Locals Can't even afford to live there (too expensive). Giving job to manilenos yes of course but Don't Say it represent Philippines because it's NOT .
Go to Province ,Cebu ,Davao, Siquijor ,Palawan,Ilocos,Mindanao ,Batangas etc. They represent Filipino Culture .
Observe the Way of living of locals this is where you measure if its developing or struggling .
Many parts of provinces has slow internet which is basic commodity of modern living nowadays . You get that in BGC but they don't cater to serve that in many Local Provinces. If everything makes sense .

"third world" has been a very misused term... It really just originated from the world war, and third world just means any country that's not the allies or the axis. Germany isn't even "first world" in that definition.
"Developing country", as you say, is the correct economic descriptor. Poverty is in any country, at different levels and in different forms. So, honestly... Calling it in the classical "third world" which most people really mean is "under developed" like really really poor economically, is not even correct for the Philippines anymore.

The thing is, BGC is a place tailored specifically to cater to the rich and the foreigners. They keep everything as neat and clean as possible to give off the best impression, and they make sure the strays or homeless beggars that wonders in be relocated immediately lest they risk dirtying the eyes of the precious money dispensers. Sadly, the further away you go from BGC Center, the more you see the 3rd-world-ness of the city. 😢

The philippines is NOT a poor country. What the PH has is a poverty problem. There is a very huge discrepancy between poor and rich. The rise of the middle class alleviates this but it won't be enough until the nation's growth will be inclusive. The problem is even if the the GDP is one of the fastest growing worldwide, the benefits are not felt by the people living at the bottom of society. So while the PH is not a poor country by any means, it certainly has a glaring "poverty" problem.

I mean, if you’re in poverty and you also produce three children, you’re all the more in poverty because you can’t really afford those three children . You’re only seeing the tourist bubble of Manila, but that’s not the real Philippines. Venture beyond those areas, and you’ll quickly find the reality this is a third-world country. I’ve explored it myself, and while the poverty is clear, the people here are genuinely happy with so little. It can put things into perspective for any foreigner that true happiness doesn’t come from the distractions of a lavish lifestyle. To really understand the Philippines, you need to see it for what it is, not just through the lens of a tourist.

The major problem with the Philippines is that there is no Middle Class. You are either poor or rich. The inequality is quite obvious when going to an exclusive subdivisions for the rich to your typical barangay area.

There's a middle class. The mother of my kids is middle class and so is her family. Some of my close Filipino friends are also middle class. They work. They have money. One of them even has a brand new car. They're not rich (not even close to it) and they're not poor.

Metro Manila's poverty rate is 5%. However, for the whole country, it's 18% which is quiet high. The government target is to have a single digit poverty rate for the country in 2028.
New residential settlements are being built for the slum dwellers.
in Metro Manila alone, slums have been significantly reduced over the last 10 years. to give way to new commercial districts, railways, expressways, condos, roads, etc.
PH needs to catch up a lot with its richer Asian neighbors.

Reminder that the term "3rd world" actually refers to countries unaligned or have no solid stand between the "1st world" (mostly european, NATO/US-aligned) countries and "2nd world" (communist/Russia-aligned) countries during the Cold War. The term just stuck around as most of the unaligned countries had relatively slower economic growths and mostly had to pick themselves up after WW2. A more appropriate means of scaling, i think, would be the world bank's classification: least developed, developing, and fully-developed countries.

    • @jasonleyson7825
      @jasonleyson7825 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, we could say that the Cold War-era definitions are largely out of context with the current meaning of "third world." Originally, the terms "first world," "second world," and "third world" were purely political classifications based on alliances, but these labels have since shifted in meaning.
Today, "third world" is often used to describe countries with lower economic development, less infrastructure, and social challenges, which doesn’t necessarily correlate with their Cold War alliances. The term "third world" is also increasingly replaced by terms like "developing" or "emerging economies," which better capture the focus on economic and social progress rather than historical political alignment. So, while the original context is interesting historically, it no longer aligns with the current use or understanding of these terms. So, possibly the World Bank's classifications of: "least developed", "developing" and "fully-developed countries" would be a better fit.

In my opinion, I don't care if they call Philippines a 3rd world. At least it will save the country as it had been for the last 80 years. Other country will just be shocked to see Philippines becomes progressive, modern, rich, and ahead than other countries.
Isaiah 60:1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. 2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. 3 And THE GENTILES (not chosen) SHALL COME TO THY LIGHT, AND KINGS TO THE BRIGHTNESS OF THY RISING.
Isaiah 42:10 Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; THE ISLES, AND THE INHABITANTS THEREOF.
Isaiah 60:9 SURELY THE ISLES SHALL WAIT FOR ME, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.
Isaiah 2:2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain (people) of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains (other nations) , and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
