- Small-bore sportbikes like KTM’s new RC390 and Yamaha’s R3 are making a big splash, and tire manufacturers are taking notice. Michelin, Bridgestone, and Shinko have all recently released rubber in 110 front section widths and 140 and 150 rear section widths suitable for small-displacement sportbikes. That’s adding to existing options from Pirelli and IRC, which means consumers now have lots of tires to choose from.

I tried to finish off IRC road winners with a burn out once.. I ran out of gas.
+Alex S LOL, man I actually bust out laughing after reading this... good stuff. I have them on my recently acquired Ninja 250 and I've taken them to the edge on parking lot drills, so definitely okay grip for stock tires.
I'm surprised you did t run out of top end first...
Got a 8 year old set on my CBR250R; definitely need to be replaced by now but I'll replace them with more IRC's.

i would like to point out that suzuki has extraordinarily low interest rates. if you're tier 1 or tier 2, you get 0 percent fixed rate for the entire loan. it's not a limited time thing, it's the entire freaking loan and it's their normal rates. the maximum rate if you have the worst credit possible is still less than tier 1 rate from kawasaki. i know because i just bought a bike from a kawa/suzuki dealer. i would have gotten 14% interest from a kawa, but i got 0% from suzuki.

Great review. I own a 1988 VTR250 and there has always just been but a few choices available. Now manufacturers have found a new rider category and the tire folks have come through.

New Rosso II's on my Aprilia RS125. Great handling tyre, super happy with the confidence they inspire. Definitely have to look at the Shinko next time though, that price point is insane!

May I ask why the Metzeler Sportec M5 Interact have not been featured here. They are stock here in India and I am assuming other countries as well. They are pretty awesome soft compound tires as well. Would be nice to see how they match up to the US / UK spec tire.

I've got the Michelin Pilot Street radial and as you said, they're really good in the rain and last a good 15'000km (a bit under 10k miles), you can still use them on twisty roads if you don't put crazy angles which you shouldn't on open roads ;)
Thanks for this. Very handy. Ever since michelin discontinued their single compound pilotpower road sport I've been curious to find out what else suits. Have tried the s20s and found them good, but not as good as the michelin road sports i used to have.

great video, i couldnt say enough about how important tires are on any bike especially these little sportbikes that people often start out on. more grip and control is the kind of confidence a new rider needs out of their tires. i started out on a 2008 ninja 250r with some sort of cheap stock shit tire kawasaki chose and i just thought that kind of tire performance was normal until i upgraded to a more expensive michelin brand

Ari, how about a comparison between small bike track tires? I would love to hear your opinion of the Bridge-stones VS Alpha 13's Vs Pirelli Super Corsas. Also, why doesn't bridge stone have the r10 in small bike sizes in the states?

The RC's comes with metzeler tire in India by default. Any idea where it stands in comparison ??
No Pirelli Supercorsa SC? or Dunlop Alpha-13? I swapped the stock Metzeler M5's on my RC390 with the Alpha-13's and the Alpha-13's were much better, the M5's feel like a reasonably sticky road tyre, where the Alpha-13's feel like a road legal track tire.
If grip is your primary concern then I would get either one of these two tires.

After hearing spacepods review on the rosso 2 being a new rider, I bought them and loved them as I have a lot more experience on bikes and have tried different tires. Hands down the bstone s20 evo is king. Grips better and lasted me 3 months rear compared to 1 month with the rossos. I am a track oriented guy and love the s20 evos and now the s21 for my 750. Pirellis wear extremely unevenly. If you buy the rossos once you pass 1500 miles check your tire, pref when cleaning your chain to spin the tire and check it out. The pirelli will look fine until you get to the other side and see where your cords are about to pop through. Looks like the middle of the tire is splitting open for those who don't know.
Ari, are you considering to test those tires on streets or rainy conditions? If you did already, what was your experiments? In Turkey, we always choosing to use most soft tires like Rosso II and Pilot Street and avoiding to use IRC's
I'm getting Rosso III's. Do you reccommend 140/70 or 150/60?
I only care about feel/grip/handling (disregard wear, price, strightline stability or looks)

Shinko tires are the #1 tire I sell at my shop. Best bang for your buck for the everyday street rider!
Zig Ray I hate those tires on my RC-51
I bought a used 2016 Goldwing with the expectation of new tires before I took ownership. I thought I’d get the OEM tire but they put the Shinko touring tire on it. I didn’t go 50 miles before I put new tires on it. They would have killed me. I thought the shop installed the wrong Shinko as the sidewall couldn’t handle the weight. I was wrong as their website called out that tire for the Goldwing. I’ll never use anything but Dunlop again.
I just saw the video! and I'm surprise that IRC RoadWinner price there was over 200$, here in Indonesia (its manufactured here I believe) only cost 80$-90$ per sets, and yep all 250cc bikes comes with that tires!

howcome you didn't test the Metzeler sportec M5s? They come stock with the bike here in India and I personally feel that they are great tyres however since I am new to bikes and this is my first bike, I haven't tested any other tyres in the category. I'd love to know what Ari has to say about them he's kinda like an idol for me :P

M7's are best used on tracks. Waste of money if using for daily commute
I use Michelin pilot street as a daily driver and believe me when i say this, they are better than stock metzeler H rated!

Honda really needs to do something with the baby CBR to make it competitive with the Ninja and R3. Tires alone aren't enough to save it.

Oh I hope that happens. I love the CBR250R with Repsol paint. I just want more power and/or less weight without having to modify.

I am looking to get new set of shoes for my R3, your review has really helped. You didn't comment much about Pirelli 140 rear. We get here 110/70 and 140/70 here in India, but a H rated one. Would really like to know how would it fair against the M7rr 110/70 and 150/60? Would be kind of you if you can help make a decision here.

The ktm 390's comes stock with Metzeler types in my country which are pretty awesome.

I am looking for the best combo on a 250 sm for grip not milage. I would like to run a 130 110 combo on 17s and I can't find alot of choices. What's your top pic? any other input would be appreciated.
The Michelin Pilot Streets are really let down by that rear tire. The problem gets even worse when it gets a little wet. The rear has AWFULL grip in the rain. It feels really good and planted untill you give it just a smidge of lean angle. At that point the rear end completely loses grip and you have to do a big correction to not lose it.
If they can find a way to fix the weird grip levels in the tire I think it would probably be the best "around town tire" for small cc sport/naked bikes.
Wet weather riding becomes really scary when 80% of the intersections in your town are roundabouts.

Where did you end up buying the S20s from? I couldn't find any S20s in 150 rear! I ended up buying Pilot Power 2 CTs.
Has anyone tried back to test or S20 evo 140 vs 150 rears? I am going to get the s20 evos for my Duke 390! I just cant decided which tyre size 140 or 150? 140 may sit better on the 4" rear rim, should be lighter (unsprungmass is very important in how a bike handles and the stock wheel are a little weighty for the size), may also be a softer compound. does anyone have any experience on them? or can confirm my assumusions?

I wonder why Bridgestone battle-axe isn't more popular in supermoto. It's my favorite tire on a sport bike.
So does a rounder profile allow more grip at leans? Or is a flatter profile better?
Is it some regulation rules in Europe regions....have always seen ktm rc 390's having their blinkers on the fairing where as in India we have good looking blinkers integrated with the side mirrors itself and both of them are led blinkers
running a 160/60-r17 on the back of my 2016 r3 and the stock 110/70-r17 on the front, Both are Michelin pilot power 2CT tires i had to ditch the 140 rear as they do not make this tire that small, Bike is day and night compared to the stock pilot streets and even the two sets of pilot street radials i had, Definitely worth it to get the good tires.
