I Straight Piped My Turbo Diesel Mercedes! Loud Turbo Spool & Weird Cold Starts

  • After installing a 3-inch catless downpipe on my Turbo Diesel E320 CDI Mercedes I had to hear it with no mufflers. In this video Matt from Driven Performance and myself, straight pipe the CDI and it sounds awesome and really weird at the same time. I never thought it would sound like this especially at cold start. Comment below what you guys think. Should I install AMG mufflers or leave it alone?

3’ single pipe with a resonator would sound pretty good I think... But if you want the quad exhaust the e63 mufflers are some of the best according to amg community.

Kind of sounds like a truck. Not all bad. Try some mufflers back there that are designed to be loud, it still won't be louder. Way back Thrush made "turbo"mufflers, they sounded really good on a 4cl or two of them on a V8, though not loud.

I'd say add a resonator from an e55 in the middle to take the harshness out the turbo whine. VGT turbos are a lot harsher whistle then a fixed vane turbo. Or the e63 mufflers which would allow more engine tone with damped turbo whistle. My 7.3 psd with a big turbo has a straight through resonator and muffler. Sounds good a the perfect amount of turbo noise.

My entire life I have always been a huge fan of loud exhaust. Till I bought a house and neighbors knew it was me coming home at 4 am lol so now I prefer a sleeper. I honestly don’t think straight pipes sound good but performance 1st. Does back pressure effect diesel as it does gas? I lost performance with my exhaust system believe it or not.

Exhaust Mods are the wrong approach for this diesel engine. Try to get your hands on a 2014+ Mustang Sound Pipe. It is a pipe that attaches from the air intake and dumps the intake sound right into the pedal area of the cabin. It has a membrane in the middle and 2 foam mufflers, which are removable/adjustable to your liking. You can build a fitting onto your air intake and get right to that turbo sound. Result: As much Turbo Sound Inside as you like, Whisper Quiet Outside. th-cam.com/video/tbJFlDK8hrA/w-d-xo.html
I might even try this mod for my stock M113 w163 and post a video.

The STOP/START button on the 420CDI gearknob made me first think "whiat's this?" I knew that only V8/V12 versions had that. Then i checked the factory sticker. It’s got a bit of Detroit 71 series rasp (but quieter of course). Love it - I think I want one

If you want an even louder turbo get a cold air intake. And if you want some boost in power (not much), get a custom intercooler which will keep the turbo cooler.

You can actually hear that it's a six cylinder now, which you can't with the stock exhaust. One of the things I didn't like about my E320CDI when I had it. Sounds great, keep it that way. Putting mufflers on will only return it to somewhere near stock again IMO.
