I Installed A Catless Downpipe On My Turbo Diesel Mercedes & Tested 0-60 MPH. Listen To That Turbo!

  • Every turbo diesel needs to breathe so in this video we make a custom catless downpipe for my 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI. We also do a before and after sound clip and 0-60 MPH to measure the performance gain of removing a gigantic restriction in the exhaust. This downpipe should work even better with the larger turbo that's on its way and once we increase boost even more.

      So do the Feds... I've always heard it was a $10k fine to remove emissions equipment. I mean, it's his car, and more power to him, but I'm surprised a shop would do it on camera. I hope I'm just being a worry wart, but they could get in trouble for something like that...

Also, 0-60 numbers don’t matter that much, because of the circumstances. You are definitely gaining a bit more hp and torque but don’t expect that high numbers.

    Love your videos man! Thought - Could you reduce the cat matter material by half to maintain partial exhaust cleansing and still lose that half boost for power gain and remove the muffler for sound quality? Cut a door into your old cat and remove the front filter matter, then mesh what is left and weld the door back on. That is why I need a shop in my garage! So I can further mod my S550.

    If you want to change the intercooler, try thinking to put an air to water one. It reduces the lag of the turbine to almost 0. But if you don't or its a to high cost ,let the original one and the new turbo. Otherwise you will have big turbo lag,and a small wide band of power.

    As far as i know you want to loose as much temp as possible right after the turbo to gain power by getting more exhaust gasses away from the hot side(hot air has more volume than cold) so wrapping it with heat isolation can get it worse. What i think would be the best compromise is just wrapping the upper part so the intake does not get as hot as now but wrap it as minimal as possible to get it to cool down as fast as possible
    By letting it cool down the difference in density will cause like an vacuum allowing more gasses in the same time to get out

    • @karenthomson9749
      @karenthomson9749 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You got it wrong.. more expansion and heat with a wrapped tube leads to greater velocity and therefore exhaust efficiency.

  • @ketillundsrensen6167
    @ketillundsrensen6167 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have the optil to make a better flowing in and outletcone on the Cat. That would help a lot combined whit a bigger exhaust under the car to the rear mufflers (hot exhaust gasses needs more space than colder gasses.) combined whit better a header and turbo type you could increase the cars potential and drivability. De-Cat is never a good idea.
    But I maybe been damaged since i work with DPF and SCR systems. It is not easy power its Dirty power. i think that there is better ways to gain power, for example water injection, better Intercooler, cleaning the intake and porting the heads, better turbo, exhaust manifold, better injectors, better Highpressior pump. ECU optimizing. Oil catch tank.
    If you ajust the engine to make as little sod at possible you will get more NoX but when you don't get the oil in the manifold it would be easy'er to keep it clean. It's not free but is is a better way to do it. You can tune and still be green ish. And when you do that you learn a lot..
    Other wise i love the video's one of them help my friend trouble shorting on his W211 e270cdi.

      I had a 220cdi w210 once, just a recommendation: do a complete straight pipe with a small muffler maybe where the DPF normaly sits.
      Its not too loud like that (the muffler takes away alot of the high pitched noises) and it leaves a really throaty sound :D
      The car smokes alot less like that because the big muffler at the end of the exhaust is not there anymore.
      A lot of diesel soot collects in there and once you give it full throttle, you blow all of that soot out of the exhaust.
      also turbowhistle all the time :D Believe me, car parks are REALLY fun like that :D

    I am thinking to buy a Mercedes GL 420 CDI or an GL450 CDI Which one has the best engine? And is 200,000KM or 124,000 miles too much? The models I look at have 120k+ miles on them. Hope you could give me any advice where to look for. Thanks!

    Great video! Thank again. Have you tried a throttle response modulation device like Sprint Booster ($290) or Pedal Commander ($300) or Pedal Box ($325)? I assume allowing the drive-by-wire throttle body on these cars to just snap open, rather than slowly opening, would decrease 0-60 times. They look like they're just plug and play so you could give them a go on both E models.

      drive by wire? its a diesel it does not have a throttle valve

    How about instead of modifying the second hand cat by cutting it up just punch out the honeycomb inside the cat therefor leaving it stock looking from the out side .

      Cut the pipe's at each end of the cat weld a straight pipe through the cat weld the original pipes back on and problem solved flow issue gone while keeping the stock look.

    Try doing cold air intake, that intake above exhaust is weird and I think it's reason for heat soak. Also, big intercooler too

    • @calebdutka3285
      @calebdutka3285 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gedas Alekveravičius Not sure adding a cold air intake would would net any gains due to the fact a Diesel engine prefers warmer air in its cylinders since its compression ignition. Increasing the size of the intake if it’s restrictive could help, but not to sure a cold air intake would do much since the air needs to be compressed and heated in the cylinders anyway to ignite. The new turbo for sure tho will help since it’s forcing more oxygen into the engine , not by means of cooler air but by the amount of air it’s drawing in. Being heat soaked is bad for power but a cold air intake isn’t going to do much. Insulating the turbo, and a better cooling system would be more beneficial .

      Hehehe, I've also thought the same😅 but still, even in diesel, colder is better, also if you increase the boost, more molecules in the cylinders, they get compressed even more, even more heat to ignite, so really it would be better

    • @calebdutka3285
      @calebdutka3285 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colder is better for diesel motors? They wouldn’t need glow plugs or a system to preheat the cylinders if that was the case. The only thing in a diesel that you want to keep cold is the exhaust system. EGTs are way more important then intake temps.

    • @jakehoehn4146

      The air in a diesel engine needs to be hot enough after compression that the fuel ignites when it enters the cylinder. There’s no other method to ignite the fuel. If the outside air is very cold, and the motor isn’t warmed up, compressing the air doesn’t heat it up enough to ensure the fuel ignites.

    • @gedas3419

      @@calebdutka3285 colder is more dense, more oxygen molecules etc, as petrol engines. Colder is better coz more oxygen, so more fuel can burn. Yes engine can run on cold air, it can run on - 50degree Celsius, but yeah, start with glow plugs and it won't run if engine is not warmed up. But compressed air will heatup enough to ignite the diesel, but cold block will not

    Sounds great, mufflers are next to go though.. if you’re not liking the diesel smell, try running a biodiesel blend- B10 or B20 should be fine depending what is available to you.

    • @jruerph
      @jruerph 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      B10 - B20 is aplenty here in Illinois. Due to the corn lobby and tax incentives it's actually easier to find than #2 diesel. BUT, Mercedes doesn't recommend anything over B5.

    • @matthewshambler2644
      @matthewshambler2644 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know Mercedes only recommended B5 and lower, I assume that is only on the common rail engines? Old mechanical injection OM616's etc. will run on filtered waste vegetable oil quite happily- as long as it's not too cold, so Illinois in the winter might be tricky!
