Marlin started the crossbolt safety in 1983. I also do not like it. Bear tooth mercantile in Cody WY sells a kit to replace it with a screw. Works well and looks great too
I love lever action rifles and single action revolvers. They are just classic pieces of history and they have so much nostalgia associated with them. I am looking into getting one of these in the near future. Great video, thanks!
Thanks for the review. I am patiently waiting for the Cowboy action shooting version with the octagonal barrel and will buy one. PS I bought a Remlin version of a Marlin. Had to spend as much as the rifle cost to fix it. Remington incapable of doing so and refused to admit they had issues. Pissed me off to the point I wrote an email and then later a certified letter to their CEO and didn't get a response. I was somewhat pleased when they went bankrupt. Marlin is in much better hands with Ruger.
I have been on the hunt for that exact rifle for awhile. On Monday (eclipse day) my wife and i stopped in our local little gunshop . To my surprise they had one in the rack, told me it just arrived 9 days ago. I said, well, it won't see a tenth day here, she's coming home with me. What a great day it was!!
Clicked through because I saw a marlin and enjoyed your review. I have a few spare skinner sights sitting around for a 94, happy to send you one Sheriff if you have a PO Box as I’ve enjoyed them and they sent me an extra last time I ordered one that I don’t have any need of. Just let me know.
I've got a Remington/Marlin .357, LOVE IT!! Put Williams Fool Proof sights on it and love it even more!! The sights are available from Brownel's, for $90.00 , plus $75.00 to have them professionally installed. Money well spent.
have a taurus 38/357 rifle, have 180 grain bullets loaded in 38 special cases that are hearing safe out of a 20" barrel, great for coyotes and indoor practice.
You may come to like that pivot screw on the lever. It makes it super easy to remove the bolt so you can clean the barrel from the breech. Glad to see the 1894 back.
Nice, a fairly powerful straight walled case round; rimmed. As it should be. In the ‘80’s I was working in NM , talked to an old rancher. He told me most all ranch rifles saddle guns, used to be .25/20 & 32-20 . He said these were considered “varmint cartridges” in the early 20th century. So, your .357 seems very traditional, yet MORE powerful. A pretty good combo.
This is the first time I've seen a video on the ruger marlin 357 classic. I love that rifle. I've wanted one since they started talking about it a long while ago. Thanks for sharing
I really like your videos because they are from the real worlld without pushing a personal preference or trying to emphasize a point with bad language. I'm subscribed so please keep posting.
I have had a lever action in mind. Nice review Sheriff. I will see into this Ruger Marlin more. I like a two point sling on a rifle and factory able is always good. Thank you.
Very nice. I like how you can see if there's a round in the magazine at a glance. Late 1980s was the first time I seen a lever action with a safety in inventory. It was not accepted well by the customers. Winchester was really hurting in those days. And started putting high-grade wood on their standard 94s. The Italian company that owns it now only puts out the high dollar commemorative model.
Took mine to a gun smith and had mine polished to feed ammo better. It now loads any and all ammo effortlessly. Spent about $90 and it was worth every penny.
Howdy, Sheriff! That’s a sharp lookin’ rifle out of box. Thanks for sharing. I’m old enough to remember Chuck Connors “Rifleman” intro. and that look into the camera. 🤠
I enjoy any law enforcement who supports the 2nd amendment and doesn’t feel above law abiting citizens trying to enforce laws that infringe upon the citizens I’m from California so feels good to see some one for the people
so you got a really nice .357 the only mistake ruger made is not making enough rifles they also need to expand the number of calibers really glad you took the time to make this presentation
I can only say if you’re on the fence about buying one, jump on it. I was recently given one of these by my neice and her husband ( God bless ‘em!) and it’s everything the Sheriff says it is. Beautifully made, like they used to be, maybe better. So far I have lightened the loading gate and added a sling and peep sights, and can’t think of anything else it needs. If you reload, be mindful of the overall length of your rounds, and shoot away. Thanks for the video.
Very nice carbine! I'm looking for a good 357 lever action and I'm trying to decide between Marlin, Winchester, and Henry so I've been watching gun review videos. Thanks for this video!
@@peterb2346 My Henry Big Boy is picky about ammo. My Remlin has never had a misfeed with any ammo. But my Rossi 92 is the smoothest and fastest shooting and has never misfed. Accuracy is good across the board.
Really great *actual* review...subscribed. Just yesterday I saw online that the .357Mag 1894 will soon be available in the SBL version. I *WILL* be getting one of those.
Looks like Ruger is doing a fine job with the Marlin line of rifles. I've not heard any negative comments about them in reviews so far. I believe Marlin came out with their safety in 1982 or 83. They had a role mark on the barrel CS, for "carbine safety" This is was a good review, Sheriff. Might want to support the rifle better next time with a front and rear rest from shooting off the bench. Small groups are what you're looking for in order to move your point of impact with sight adjustments.
I took a ride, a bit of a ride, out to Grafs. Needed some powder/ reloading supplies. Didnt know they sold firearms. I enjoyed the place. I have the new Trapper, Its been a fine gun. I also have a Henry X .44 and an All Weather. 357.
Good morning Sheriff! Just found you!! My Dear friend who has passed was Bill Gough who was sheriff in Cass Mo. for 17 years. Stay safe sir !! Thanks for the video!!! Bud Cary Grandview Mo.
Very nice carbine! Ruger has done a great job bringing back Marlin. I bought a new "Remlin" 1894 in 357 mag when I heard they were going out of business. It was $649 and worth every penny. I've never had any issues with it. Some people weren't that lucky. I have had many JM Marlins through the years. The only difference I can tell is the Remlin has a semi-gloss receiver. At the same time I bought a Remlin 336. Again it functioned flawlessly. I would never hesitate to buy one if the price was right. But like you I MUST take my 16" Rossi 92 357mag everywhere I go! Maybe your Ruger/Marlin will be better than the Rossi, but that's a tall order!
A fine purchase. My only gripe about it is that the loop should be alittle longer to accommodate my 4 fingers when handling it and not have to put my index over the trigger gaurd. It just feels awkward. I've been wanting a marlin .357 ever since I bought an old 336 in 35 remington.
Looks like it shoots well, enabling to keep it in the shoulder pocket while cycling the action... Like a proper lever gun, should run 👍🏾 Thanks, Sheriff 🗽
Great review. 😊 Was about ready to pull the trigger on a Rossi R92 to replace my 1970 something Marlin 336 I gave to my youngest son as a deer hunting gun. Your review sent me looking elsewhere, and I managed to find this gun in state at least.😂 Should have it mid next week. 😊
I like Ruger. It seems they are well made and designed for shooting. More of a shooters gun than a prom queen. These look like a prom queen. Almost to pretty to shoot. Henry has a competitor. I reload this caliber combo so this offering is attractive.
i am torn between getting the new Marlin or a Winchester model 92. l have a couple Henrys, a Uberti !873, and a Marlin texan thats chambered in 30-30. My first experince with lever guns was in 1966 and i have loved them ever since.
I have an older model Marlin .357 ('70s) carbine that I carried a few times as a deputy as it matched caliber with our revolvers (versus the issue .30-30 Winchesters carbines). By the way, I would hesitate to add a powered scope to my carbine but I find a red dot is about a third time faster back on target that the rifle sights. That can be important in a SSS...serious social situation.
I have to admit, I've never heard of SSS....serious social situation. Give's a whole new meaning to "An armed society, is a polite society." Clean-up on isle 9 😎
Check Ranger Point Precision for nice aluminum alloy replacement loading gates. I have the 20" Cowboy model and love it. Enjoy your new rifle! One word of advice.. don't try to baby the lever.. up and down with authority and it works every time.
I own an original Marlin and with a red dot Tasco from 1999 I can do about 2 inches at 50 yards with 158 grain so I consider that ok with pistol cartridges and with 180 grain it would make a white tail gun out to 100 yards. White tail deer are thin skinned and a shot behind the shoulder in the heart and lungs would easily do the job. That gun looks great , thankyou and I thank Ruger for acquiring Marlin, love those lever guns.
I’ve been spoiled by my R92, it’s an old 1990s 20” stainless steel, pre safety. I don’t know if the USA got this variant of the rifle, but mine in Australia has a removable magazine tube with bottom loading port so never use the side loading port, these are reasonably common here I have been told. (Have not seen one yet) I am tempted by the new Marlin in 357, stainless with laminated stock or will wait for the Colt lever to come out n 357. Either way will get the 16” Rossi for exactly the same reasons you like yours (and see if the bolt will swap with my pre safety)
Thank you Sheriff Oller for your review, It is good to know that it looks like Ruger has the quality back up to snuff. I HATE to be a "Safety Nanny" here but, safety glass's work best when placed in front of your eyes, not the forehead......;)
Nice gun, video. I like most guns. Level actions are cool. My first deer rifle was a 30/30 Marlin. I want to get another one and 45/70. Thanks for the video.
Nice rifle ... good overview of it. Good job, love these damn rifles! I think you ejected a live round at the beginning when you were shooting which would explain the missing 8th shot on target. Unless it was fired off cam and was a spent casing. So, we have a few Rossi rifles here, Henry Big Boy Brass in 357, a vintage Marlin 336, vintage Winchester 94 and I am impressed with the new Marlins though we don't have one yet. I will give big praise for the new Rossi R95 and the R92 Laminate which has no loading gate issues, seemingly now remedied by Rossi.
I bought two lever action 357 rifles a while ago off GB. One was Marlin and other was Rosi stainless steel. After shooting it, there was ejection trouble and I took it to my gunsmith. He said he couldn’t do anything but send it to Rosi they have lifetime warranty. They said it would cost me over two hundred dollars to fix! I said what about the life time warranty? I forget what they said. The marlin works fine even being older.
Enjoy you new Gun it' looks beautifully built I love the wood I presume it's walnut ime watching in Ireland unfortunately it's almost impossible to own a Gun like that
I had a rossi bubble barrel 12 ga it was no good with hammers it was pot metal shot a couple of times and u had to fix the firing pins rossi I would like my money back or a new gun are you any better
I have just bought a CBC/ Taurus .357 Magnum " liver action " rifle in Brazil. I do feel good. Cause a I have revolvers in the caliber it was a " simple decision ".
Did you clean the barrel before you shot it. I bought a 1895 in 45-70. Ruger made the stock 13.5 inches way too short for most folks. Comb is so low a scope will require you to build up the comb
No nonsense, no drama, no cursing. Nicely done sir.
BTW....there is a reason I have nine lever action rifles. They put the class in classic.
Totally with you on the cursing.
I prefer cursing
Glad they're finally getting these out again. Even better that they're good rifles again. Kudos to Ruger fore reviving these guns.

Great video Sheriff. If you want to see that Marlin come into it's own top it with a Skinner peep sight. They set your eyesight back 30 years.
I've often thought about one of those. Maybe I'll give one a try, cuz my eyes are 51....... I'd love my 21 year old eyes back again!
I changed out my buckhorn sight on my Henry with a Skinner peep and it made a world of difference.

Looks like a good home defense rifle as well.
Good stuff Sheriff Matt. Keep em coming!

Hi sheriff, you only shot 7….the first of the 8 you loaded was ejected when you racked the lever.
Apparently he doesn't count his shots. ;lol
No he fired 8
That is a very nice looking rifle. I am a huge Ruger fan. I have several Ruger pistols and riles. Nice video too.
Got urself a new sub. In my mid 50s am now going back to revolvers and lever actions just where I stated.
