    1:46:48 Sideways does a good video about this. He talks about how, in the animated Beauty and the Beast, you can hear Paige O'Hare SMILING in the booth as she's singing. And like, it is true. I'm stage managing a show right now. A staged version of a radio show. There are some instances that we tell the actors to smile. And it REFLECTS in their line delivery. You could close your eyes and just listen to the show, and you can just HEAR that they are invested in their character. That vocal performance is not just in the voice, but it is in your entire body. You embody the emotions. You feel them. The song is the emotions.
    The most beautiful songs in musicals are not these grandiose performances, they are extensions of intense emotion. It literally is the basic formula of a Disney musical movie. When the emotions get too intense, you sing. When they get even more intense? You dance. My biggest criticism of Disney's new live action movies (or realistically animated movies) is that there is no emotion. They are afraid to let their characters have emotions. Too afraid to let them fail and learn. They just slap some comedy in and call it a day. Yes, the comedic elements are memorable, but the emotional beats are what make the Disney animated movies just as spectacular as they are. The music is the core of the movies. You cannot remove them and make a story that makes sense - they are the cornerstone of the movie. When you remove them, you remove the emotional beats. When you strip the actor's ability to have a flawed character, you are holding back your actor's ability to actually perform.
    The biggest fail of these movies comes from an emotional level. The most emotional, raw, and beautiful performances are not perfect. They have flaws. Those flaws show those intense emotions. When Disney autotunes them out, you're left with an okay performance and enough of an idea to keep a story rolling, but not a performance that actually tells the story. You scrub the character, the emotion from the song. These songs exist because the emotions are too intense to speak.... But, what happens when you remove the vocal performance? The emotions are no longer there. So, when you remove the emotions from a part of the story that is deeply emotional.... you are left with the shell of something that once was. You remove the whole point of the song to begin with. Why sing when the emotions are not there? Is there a justification for singing? No.

      I know, right??? Just look at The Prince of Egypt. It has some of the most powerful music and songs in the entire history of animated film. You can feel the slaves' suffering in "Deliver Us", God's wrath in "Thus Saith the Lord", and even the Hebrew's freedom in "When You Believe".

      I agree and understand your points about the live action remakes not letting emotional moments with their characters sink in, but what do you mean by their recent animated films, are you referring to Encanto, Raya, etc?

    • @nerdoftheatre
      @nerdoftheatre ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@thesapphireone I don't think I mentioned animated movies. When I said "realistically animated movies," I was referring to the "live action" Lion King. (Even tho the only part of that movie that was live action was the sunrise in the beginning of the movie, the rest of it was animated.) I don't think Disney's animated films have this issue, it's really only a live action Disney movie issue tbh

    The people who make these movies and try to turn every female character into what they think is strong and independent female characters consistently forget that people who are actually strong and independent don't keep bringing it up. They're confident enough about who they are that they just ARE that (you know like Jasmine in the original movie), they don't need to violently shake you and scream "I'M STRONG AND INDEPENDENT! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BELEIVE ME! CLAP FOR ME PLEASE!,"

      It's almost like female characters are not allowed to be people anymore. Theyre just there to get people talking about how strong they are and also not allowed to be flawed. 2023 has been a nice year for female characters....most of them. Yeh.

    • @vetarlittorf1807
      @vetarlittorf1807 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Victoria-sm1sj Not in the original. In the original, Jasmine was sassy, shrewd, brave, confident, feisty and had absolutely no tolerance for any kind of disrespect. Heck, she even has sex appeal and is aware of it. She also had character flaws like having a short temper and being impulsive and vulnerable to her ego, which honestly makes her feel like a realistic girl in her late teens. Plus, something that the remake didn't understand is that in the original, Jasmine is the catalyst for his self-acceptance. She's not some boy-crazy Valley girl, she is the one who instills in Aladdin the notion that he shouldn't equate self-worth with materialism, as she herself would trade all her possessions and royal privileges for freedom.

    I found this video SO HARD to get through when it came to the Live Action remake. Not because of you guys. YOU GUYS HELPED ME THROUGH IT. It was the remake itself warning me out. I had never watched it and that’s because we’re in the age where we don’t have to watch a film to know it’s bad. Predictability. I’m sorry parents of 2022, but you can tell me to never judge a book by it’s cover before watching the emoji movie (I’m not kidding, my parents have legitimately said they liked it and I can tell they said such so they can *sound* right 🙄), but I’ll be waiting on Rotten Tomatoes a whole *2 Hours Later* when you return from the slop that is Disney’s unoriginality and lack of faith in original films in the present day.
    Now, for the original film. That, I also haven’t seen in years. There is so much more I appreciate now! I love Will Smith’s work, but he’ll never…in *TEN THOUSAND YEEEEEAAAAARRRRRSSSS* …ever top Williams’ performance as the superior Genie. Thanks again for helping me through another Disney milk-toasted slog of a Live Action remake, saved by your guy’s super entertaining commentary! 😁

    If there’s one good thing I can say about Aladdin 2019, it’s what made me see and fall in love with the original as soon as I did. My grandma showed me just about all the classic Disney movies as a kid through vhs tapes, however, she lost her Aladdin one, so I missed out on it for years. Until early 2019, when I was twelve and I knew my mom wanted to go see the remake, so I finally watched the original through a TH-cam playlist and I fell in love with it. But man, do I wish I grew up with it like I did with Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. 😓

    Also: 2 HOURS! Why is this remake so long! Why would I watch this when I could watch the original, which is much better, TWICE in the same SITTING!
    This is an edit: Why does Disney keep making awful remakes of timeless classics?! It doesn’t make any sense in the slightest because A: Why would anyone watch these god awful remakes, knowing they will be bad. B: The people who have Disney Plus could literally watch the original version on Disney Plus or on DVD if they don’t have Disney Plus. Disney is basically wasting money on remakes, when they could have spend it on, oh I don’t know, ORIGINAL IDEAS! They can’t just rely on making remakes, and expect them to make a lot of money! They need to be creative and put time, thought, and effort in their films, ESPECIALLY THE STORY of their films. If they keep going down on this path, they might go bankrupt in the future, maybe not in a year or 5; But they can’t keep doing this forever.

    The only remake that I personally consider "good" is the Cinderella remake! The film changes a few things about the original, and its opening works to give context to Ella's situation without having to gloss over her backstory in 1 minute with a narration. You see instead of being told about her parents and how their death affects her The film also shows the stepmother's motivations and why she carries so much disgust for Ella. Tho, the movie isn't perfect, but compared to other remakes, this one (and maybe The Jungle Book) are the most decent.

    Im only like 10 to 11 mins in but on the topic of "background text being changed to other languages for different versions", not only is that a real practise but it is not reserved for the blu-rays or streaming releases. And I've seen this happen with other Disney movies in previous years as well.

    I don’t like the 2019 one as much as the original either but I disagree that Naomi Scott can’t sing because she’s literally a professional singer lol. She belted her heart out with speechless, like I agree that it might’ve not fit with the other songs but it still made sense with the story imo. Also the costume design is way more accurate than the original so I don’t see how it can be bad, plus the colors are so vibrant, especially on jasmine. The embellishments and detail really made it one of the best parts to look at imo. And the carpet ride is a night scene so I don’t really know what they could’ve done with that in live action to make it as colorful as the original tbh. For the animation the artists stuck to mainly using the primary colors: red, blue and yellow, which wouldn’t really make sense for live action tbh. Also ik those backgrounds must’ve been a pain for the cgi artists to do so I give them props for that. Plus I thought they did a great job modernizing a whole new world a little bit, so that’s what I was really paying attention to when I saw it. It was never gonna be as good as the original but I think they did a decent job overall and if anything, to me, Naomi and Mena’s chemistry really held this movie together.

      If you’re referring to the logo that appears every few seconds, that’s a necessity to prevent these commentary videos from being blocked for copyright.

      @@GamingMagic13 Maybe in the future you could do full commentary videos so people could sync the actual film with it?

    I wish to see the back to back reactions of Beauty and the Beast (as i liked both the live action and the original)

    Aladdin is a movie that gets better each time I watch it. Same story as the Lion King remake, saw some clips, thought it looked bad, no interest. To give a little more detail, it was mainly the Prince Ali scene and Jafar’s wimpy voice. Jonathan Freeman is one of the best Disney villain voices, so that was painful to discover

    I don’t think the Aladdin remake is terrible, I actually enjoyed it. It’s pretty tolerable in my opinion, unlike some other live action remakes…. (Jon Favero….)
