    The fact that Brandy and Paolo are returning to be Queen and King in the new descendants movie shows how important their legacy is and is still making an impact today.

    Still my favorite live action Disney film. The acting, singing, costume, and casting was chef's kiss in my humble opinion. I listen to the Whitney/ Brandy collab song quite often to this date. So glad my kids ended up liking this too. 🥰

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear that you still enjoy the 1997 version of Cinderella and that it's become a beloved film for you and your family. The casting of Brandy and Whitney Houston was definitely a groundbreaking moment for representation on screen, and their performances were truly amazing. It's wonderful to know that their collaboration on the film's soundtrack still resonates with you today. Thanks again for sharing your positive feedback! 🎉👏🏽👍🏽😊

    Imma be honest i think what made Brandy Cinderella work 30 years ago was the movie had house hold names (brandy, whitney, and whoopi, Bernedette, and George from Seinfeld), the cast was diverse and the prince was a newcomer . The magic scenes were well done and the outfits were amazing. There also was not this backlash to anything perceived as "woke" like there is now and social media did not exist either . The little mermaid t unfourtunatley is lacking with these qualities even though i love halle singing. idk if it will do good but I plan on watching.
    And i will add if remakes bother you either watch the original or make your own movie!!!

    Yes to discussing Brandy on this channel, highlighting the beginning of her acting career. It’s important to note that before live adaptions of Disney princesses from Black girls/women, Brandy, along with Whitney was the first to do it. Just like Halle Bailey is going to be an Ariel with red locs, Brandy was the first Black Cinderella with braids ❤️❤️❤️. Representation matters 👏🏾.

    What makes this so powerful is that Brandy was ridiculed for her looks growing up because she was dark-skinned and wore braids but then she’s presented with the opportunity to be the first BLACK Disney Princess in history! Wow, look at destiny

    I will definitely be supporting young Halle Bailey and watching the Little Mermaid movie. We cannot forget that even Eddie Murphy was swapped out for Robert Downey Jr in Disney Dr Dolittle franchise. Although Rex Harrison played the original. Eddie Murphy popularised it and the RDJ version was awful. The selective outrage is unreal.

      tbh i think the only reason people are upset is because of social media (people just go on social media to be negative about everything) , the grievance backlash to anything considered "woke" and to be fair the cgi in the remake of the little mermaid looks kinda bad.

    Yeah same thing I thought, because some people have no lives they make issue out of any little thing. When she was cast, yeah I was a little disappointed since I like stuff to be exactly like the thing I liked but after a while I said well this is something new. And this actress is very beautiful and talented.
    But back in 1997 people just did stuff. Things are so polarized these days that people care about a Disney movie's casting. Like wow. I had no idea that there were any bad reviews of the Brandy movie. Whitney and Brandy were super stars. The movies success was basically a sure thing. Every talented actor was in it and the source material was good. The best costumes, the best of the best working on it.
    Which makes me think maybe because Halle Bailey is like Justin Beiber famous. Where they were discovered online. And so people did not take them seriously? Brandy was an established artist and well liked Halle basically came out no where. But the role she is playing is very young. So most that will be cast to play the role will be relative unknowns. Unless you were a famous child actor or something.
    Looking forward to the movie thanks for the deep dive!

    As usual, great analysis!!! However, when is Disney (or any other major studio) going to produce a film with an African kingdom as the main story (The Lion King does not count). Africa is the second largest continent on the planet, there are plenty of stories to draw inspiration from. They were able to do so with other non-European cultures: Aladdin, Mulan, Moana, etc. What is taking Disney so long to present us with an African Princess and Prince on the screen??!!

    • @devanshepard9118
      @devanshepard9118 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They never will this is why people need 2 make their own movies instead of looking 2 Disney all the time

    • @phillinsogood
      @phillinsogood ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve been saying this for years. Africa has so much folklore & stories they could draw inspiration from. Seeing a princess from Africa with dark skin, braids and talking animals would be bomb. And the animation would be stunning as well as the music

    • @the_groove
      @the_groove  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for your comment! You bring up an excellent point. It's important for major studios like Disney to continue pushing for diversity and representation on screen, not just in terms of casting but also in the stories that are being told. There are so many beautiful and unique cultures and stories from the African continent that would make for amazing films, and it's time for these stories to be given the same attention and care as those from other cultures. Let's hope that in the future, we'll see more African princesses and princes on the screen, and that these stories will be celebrated and embraced by audiences worldwide. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts!

    • @LadyHoney214

      This would be fantastic! @AfroAngola
      Fun fact Mermaid folklore like almost everything in the history of the world originated in Africa. Over several hundreds of years ago, several different water spirits were said to live in West Africa. In stories told by the Igbo people and others, some water spirits were half-fish, half-human, but many looked like snakes or crocodiles. In the 1500s, ships with statues of mermaids on their prows began arriving from Europe.
      Over time, the European mermaid legend blended with local stories, and more and more Africans came to portray their water spirits as half-woman, half-fish. So there could EASILY have been an African mermaid film, as well as several other films surrounding Africa as Africa is beautiful and rich and immense stories to delve into. Due to jealousy and ignorance there is clearly an concerted effort to prevent the true beauty of Africa or the African Diaspora as a whole to be portrayed on film. But don't get me started lol

    For me Brandy as Cinderella worked because firstly it wasn't a remake of the Disney classic it was more of an alternate timeline version. Secondly it wasn't made during a time when Disney was remaking eveything it had done previously. Disney was making true classics in the 90's and this film is no exception. It has the Disney formula and and magic imprinted into it.
    Making versions of something that already exists is more acceptable. Look at spiderman for instance. Myles Morales isn't a replacement of spiderman he's a version of spiderman and the films help make that part clear and are done well.
    Halle Bailey in my opinion is being used as a pawn to say that the reason the film isn't doing well is because of racisism and the story is great but a bad movie is a bad movie but I hope Halie bailey gets more roles as she clearly has singing talent

    LILY JAMES is the live-action version of Disney's Cinderella, not Brandy. The 1997 film was free from controversy from the get-go, because it wasn't attached to a previous film, unlike the Little Mermaid remake which is exclusively a remake of a movie that already exists, including the characters from it. Unlike Cinderella, Ariel is not in the public domain, she's not a creation of the original author. Ariel is an original and very recognizable character, so to idiotically portray her with brown skin and tied up hair comes off as a slap in the face. Might as well give her a different name because she's so unrecognizable; they did it with all her sisters and that was fine. Why the hell did Halle's mermaid had to be named Ariel anyway? Keeping that name instead of changing it only did harm. Halle is not Ariel, she's Black Ariel. That's all there is to see. She'll never be known as just Ariel.
