In the books Sophie literally befriended Agatha just to do a good deed and be accepted into the School of Good. It is a big part of their relationship and who she is, showing since the beginning why she is put in the School of Evil

Yes I agree. There is just simply too much plot that was lost trying to fit it into the length of a film. Plus there are too many characters as well so that the film doesn't give you enough time to explore them, not just with the main characters but also other characters like Dot, Anadill, Hester, Hort and even the other boys of the school for good. Makes it hard for those who haven't read the books to really connect with them.

I do agree that it should be a show instead of a movie because there are parts that the movie didn't cover. Like Tedros true love is Agatha, him choosing her over and over again rather than them casually talking. And completely changing there chemistry like literally Tedros hates Agatha because she's a witch but after the trial by tale (Agatha saving Tedros) he starts seeing Agatha as Good. Also Sophie slowly accepting that she's Evil not Rafal manipulating her which sucks. This seems to shows that Sophie was just a victim of being manipulated to doing evil stuffs. I think if it were a show though the production may not be as grand as this.

i totally agree with the village not knowing the school exists- a huge plot line is sophie’s father trying to stop her from getting kidnapped and she is actively trying to be taken. also people get taken every 4 years, which makes sense, meaning that everyone is in the same year and when people graduate new people come in right away.

i couldn't shake the feeling that they did that to make sophie more likable. in the books sophie is so mean and awful, but she's ridiculous and funny and entertaining so we love her anyway. the writers/producers probably didn't have faith that the audience would be able to enjoy or root for a female main character that was so objectively bad, so they added this "corruption" by the school master and removed any responsibility for her evil actions. i can enjoy the movie as its own thing separate from the books, but that's something that disappointed me the most.

they literally missed the whole point!! like sophie’s whole motivation was not to end up like her mother- this is stated sO many times throughout the entire series. sophie was afraid of being alone and unloved, and that’s what fueled her. agatha’s motivations are similar (she wants to have a friend) and sophie is all she cares about- NOT BEING BEAUTIFUL. LITERALLY AT ALL. until like the fourth book, she never really brings up her insecurities and actually emphasises the ridiculousness of beautiful = good. agatha is supposed to be a contradiction to the fairytale rule and they completely missed that in the movie. they made sophie’s character shallow, using her vanity as her motivation rather than her fear. i was actually so disappointed. also- why on earth did they bring raphal in like that?? like??? there was absolutely no reason to have him as such a main character. sophie’s transformation seems so much more excusable because of his involvement. like no- sophie IS evil, even if she doesnt like it. she wasn’t supposed to be controlled by raphal, and i hated that they took away her accountability because they wanted another romantic plotline which didnt even fit in with the other plotlines. overall, the movie was crowded and rushed, and i think they totally missed the whole message that soman was trying to send.

    • @Jaguar470

Yes!!! They COMPLETELY missed showing for every character what truly motivates them, for Sophie it is her fear regarding herself, for Agatha her insecurity, and Tedros his fear of ending up just like his parents. They are all very personal motivations that the book beautifully and brilliantly shows (and for Tedros it literally took ONE page to show it! And in the film could have literally been addressed in a 2 minute flashback) and yet they missed showing those motivations for each of them completely, and so they missed the mark on what these characters are like completely and either started with who the character BECOME LATER in the series (in regards to Sophie and Agatha) or get their character COMPLETELY backwards in the way they think (Tedros) it’s SO infuriating because it doesn’t give a proper representation of this book and these characters AT ALL. Especially regarding how in-depth they are written, especially later on, it’s all based on those initial motivations and reasons for why these characters act the way they act, so for them to COMPLETELY ruin that from the very beginning I fear they won’t be able to properly developing these characters like it was done in the books, especially if you can’t get their basic motivations and characterizations down from the beginning. Then when I read them again later on they became my favourite book series and I love it

    • @Jaguar470
      @Jaguar470 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

Exactly!! The complexity of the characters is what defines the series!! This is, first and foremost, a character driven story, so the fact that they got rid of the most important part of the books makes me SO mad! The characters are flat and not fleshed out, which they could have been with a few good backstory scenes, such as for Tedros, and the fact that they started Agatha and Sophie who they END UP being by book 3 instead of who they ARE in book 1, ruins any chance of character growth they could have had because they now have nowhere to go in terms of character development from the first three books. It’s infuriating because it is the characters growth, development, and complexity (a PERFECT nature vs nurture story) that makes this series SO good, and the fact that they fell flat on ALL of that in so many ways makes this such an unfaithful adaptation to the books. It’s honestly almost like a parody of the book (and when you think of it like that, it makes the movie infinitely more funnier to watch 😂😂) and so I watch it like that, because if I took it seriously or as a serious adaptation of the books, I just feel infuriatingly sad.

It’s SO important and that’s why I fell in love with him and his books as a kid also! Because he never treated us as kids, but as equals. And he reflected that in his writing and gave us depth he knew we could handle and don’t listen to adults that said we couldn’t! That’s why I’m so glad he wrote the books the way he did! In the book I really liked how agatha sacrificed her good grades (saying to the teachers that she had the plague) just so she could help sophie with her work in the evil school, it shows just how much agatha wants to go back home.
Also, in the book, tedros had Excalibur, his father's sword, but he mostly used his training sword. I think it's because throughout the book he said that he didn't want to make the same mistakes that his father did.

I was so excited for the movie when it was first announced. The School for Good and Evil (only the first book) remains one of my favorite books ever. Unfortunately as more and more movie details were revealed to us, I became less and less enthusiastic to watch it. Finally, I sat down in front of the TV with my dad (who hasn't read the book) and a couple of friends (who have). My expectations were lower than the floor, I was fully prepared to be disappointed. This comment will probably be an entire essay but I am very upset pls bear with me.
I'll start off by saying that representation is very important in media, now more than ever, but so is the faithfulness of the adaption. Right off the bat, I didn't like that Agatha was played by a black girl. And this casting choice was revealed right after Annabeth Chase, whose actress I personally can't wait to see in action. My issue with SGE is that unlike Annabeth, Agatha's appearance is fully known by the viewer. Each book's cover illustration has her looks clearly defined, and in-book descriptions place tons of emphasis on how her hair is straight and unwashed, her skin pale and pasty, she even presented clear reasons why she always wore shapeless black (blends in well, easier to clean). With Sophia Wylie playing her, it only makes things easier for me to disconnect the movie from the book, because I go into adaptions to see the characters and story brought to life, not to see people who look completely different from the characters pretending to be them and making the plot happen.
Let me touch upon the girls' relationship in Gavaldon. From the beginning, we are shown that Sophie is vain and narcissistic, but seemed to genuinely want to be friends with Agatha. Agatha on the other hand, spent time with sophie because she had nothing better to do, and showed disdain towards Sophie often, only tolerating her presence. However, it's shown that it's actually the other way around. Agatha really enjoyed Sophie's company, as prissy as she was, and Sophie was only there for the good deed, to say she's friends with the witch girl for brownie points.
And that is put into perspective with their kidnapping.
Sophie has her bags packed, cookies on the windowsill, and she broke all the locks her dad put on the window to keep her safe. She was ready to leave as soon as possible, not caring about who she was leaving behind.
Agatha didn't want Sophie to go, let alone to leave herself.
The School Master takes only Sophie, and while she's complaining about the lack of fancy carriage and bidding a dramatic farewell to Gavaldon and her boring life, Agatha is pursuing her, so determined to not lose her only friend that the School Master doesn't even need to grab her. Sophie left her behind, and Agatha fought to bring her back out of the goodness of her heart. That places their contrast very early on, clearly showing who is really good and evil here.
I'll jump to talking about the uniforms. The start of Sophie's villain arc was killing the Beast, but the start of Agatha's princess arc was just, starting to wear the uniform. She left behind her comforable black dresses (though notably kept the shoes) to blend in with the rest of the students and learn in classes, under the pretense that it was just until she found a way to get her and Sophie back home.
The whole shock factor of Sophie and her surprising dresses and looks was that she was modifying the evil uniform, which generally students were only allowed to wear their uniforms, not anything else. How she stood out during that arc was the fact that she was adding sequins and high heels, straight up making kimonos and gowns, dying her hair and cutting it even shorter than the Beast did, all with the backdrop of the rest of the students in the same drab black clothes. This became downplayed in the movie with the simple fact that they let the students wear whatever they wanted, making the people who gawked at her (including Tedros!!!) look even more shallow than they already were.
Let's not forget about one of my favorite details that had no reason to be cut: the bridge.
In the movie, Agatha decided to go to the school for evil, steeled her nerves, and just waltzed across the bridge with no interference. Just left through the front door and walked across.
In the book, the bridge was a mystery. It was down in the mist where most couldn't see it, below the schools. You can get a clear image of what I'm talking about just by looking at the non-movie version of the book cover. The only way to reach it was by going through a portal usually situated in a pool of water, and even if you reached it there's another barrier, quite literally. There's an invisible wall on the bridge that you won't know where it is until you run into it. Once you do, it'll become a mirror, and your reflection will tell you to get your behind back to the school where you belong. Specifically saying 'Good with Good, Evil with Evil, go back to your tower before there's upheval', then 'girls with girls, boys with boys' and 'old with old, new with new', the latter two with their own respective rhymes.
What made this a fun detail was that every time Agatha went across the bridge (at least once per book, the first three anyways), she would riddle out a way to twist the mirror's words around and eventually have it believe she belongs on the other side of the bridge, and therefore it would disappear and let her pass freely, without raising any alarms.
Don't get me started on how they handled Lesso's, Dovey's and Sader's characters. When the school master appeared at orientation, I thought he was Sader, because no way would they cut such an important character! But no. Lesso was never in love with the school master. That was Evelyn. Lesso personally torturing Sophie was so stupid and out of place and ugghhh. And I'll just say, Dovey... what happened?
I don't want to rant about every little gripe I have with the movie, I could probably make my own youtube video if I did, but I will talk about something that I just wish the movie got right above all else, and that was Wish Fish.
Not just the scene at the lake, but the chapter. Probably my favorite chapter in the ENTIRE series was Wish Fish, for lots of reasons.
The chapter was mainly there to establish two things for Agatha. 1) that she had the power to grant wishes, 2) that every animal and beast at the school was a 'failed' student.
All the other girls in her animal communication class are wishing for boys they haven't even spoken to once. Agatha doesn't want a prince, she wants to get home with Sophie. But she probably shouldn't ask the fish for that, so her mind starts racing, until it settles on... giving. Using the wish the fish are granting her for someone besides herself. And that someone is the fish themselves. They transform into a young Good student, who softly thanks her, says it's been over a hundred years. Then she dies, scattering into lights and fading away.
Far in the distance, Agatha starts hearing distant cries. The voices of hundreds of animals, screaming, calling, begging her to free them too. The only thing Agatha can do is run, into the school, up the towers, onto the roof, the mass of frantic creatures stampeding the halls of the school in their efforts to reach her. Alone among the gardens, Agatha is assaulted by the fire of a gargoyle, who sets the greenery ablaze and makes a mad dive for Agatha. She's ready to die, but the gargoyle stops in front of her. This guardian who had previously frightened Agatha, nearly killed her itself, pleads with her. And Agatha obliges. She takes its hand, granting its wish, and it starts shifting to the form of a young boy. Another child wronged by the school and who only wants to be free from the place.
But before the transformation is complete, Tedros appears from the flames, indiscriminately swings his sword, and slices off the boy's head.
He says Agatha should be grateful, that he saved her from a monster and she should fall at his feet, but she gets angry. So angry. She yells at him, "HE WAS A BOY! A LITTLE BOY!" but Tedros refuses to look upon her tear-stained face with compassion, only with surprise that there is one girl in the school who doesn't want to kiss him.
The movie's version of this was bad, for more reasons than just, they didn't follow what happened in the book. The inclusion of that one character (forgot his name again lol) who turned into the Stymph wasn't a good choice. Irrelevant, but I got death flags as soon as his first scene arrived. But what's worse is that the portrayal was all wrong. Agatha witnesses him fail, but how did he fail exactly? Agatha knows it's him when he's a Stymph, but how? Stymphs don't attack Evers anyways, so the whole scene just felt wrong.
Plus, from my PoV, the impact of the revelation didn't come from an established character being mutilated and killed. It came from the fact that we DIDN'T know them. That they were nameless, faceless children, whose only connection with the protagonists is that they also went to the school, they were simply less fortunate. We will never, ever know them. And that's the point.
I could probably add more, but I think this is good for now. God knows I'll be back to edit this past typos at some point.
Hi what's up, I'm a teenager, I'm an author, and I automatically analyze things when I consume them but have no outlet to express my thoughts. I should probably start a review channel or something. Some books have been ruined for me, some become elevated, but the fact remains I think about things a lot more than I probably should.
If you've read this far, have a nice rest of your day/night and thank you.

Good always thinks a princess will have her happy ending with a prince, whereas Sophie and Agatha they don’t need a prince’s kiss for a happy ending. And when everyone realizes this the girls on both good and evil will go against princes and have their own “femininity” awakening while the princes suffer. Also has nobody kissed family members on the lips? Just me? Okay.

This is a smaller detail, but I HATED the fact that they portrayed lesso as being in love with Rafal. Not only does this almost completely erase the VERY IMPORTANT character that is Evelyn sader, but it also ruins the whole lesso-dovey relationship. LITTERALY ANYONE who read the books could tell they were raging lesbians and extremely in love. And what was the point of erasing professer sader??? Like I know he died pretty soon but he was a mentor to Agatha and, again, erasing him meant erasing his sister who has a HUGE role later on in the books. Mostly mad about the lesbian erasure. I mean they did it to the coven as well?? Like it’s canon that anadil and Hester are together but I hic that they’re in a poly relationship with dot so……idk atp💀💀

I feel like their personalities in the film were so dimmed down. Like Sophie in the books is obviously very narcissistic and really does put herself before others. I don’t think book Sophie would have ever defended Agatha from some creepy dude by hitting him, because she just wouldn’t have cared enough unless it was an opportunity for her to seem “good” (at least not Sophie from the first book). While I thought Sofia Wylie was adorable as Agatha, the writers really cut off all of the important parts of her. Apart from film Agatha being very beautiful, they seemingly erased her insecurities and cut out the makeover scene completely (and as someone who originally read this book at age 11, that scene was so powerful and beautiful and really connected with me) not only did it take away from her character development into more princessy Agatha, it also cut her personality short because a lot of Agatha’s quirky and weird traits stem from her insecurities and “if they’re going to hate me I might as well play into it” mindset. Agatha uses her edginess and wit and rudeness as a way to protect herself. Film Agatha was much more sweet and showed people her more caring and sensitive side regardless of how people saw her, but by skipping forward on all of that, her character had no room for development at all. Same with Sophie who showed that she was willing to protect Agatha from the beginning, also cutting off the development she endures in the book. I think what really irked me about the writing of this film was the lack of a meaningful relationship between the two because of the lack of development. Obviously they couldn’t fit in everything, but in the film both of their characters felt flat and static, all of the development they went though was inconsequential and didn’t mean anything on a deeper level. I feel like them being childhood besties in the film also kind of hindered this, because it gave them a reason to want to protect one another where as book Sophie and Agatha have only been friends for a few months (at most, it might have been less). Sophie doesn’t care about Agatha or anyone at the start of the book and has to learn how to care about them as she progresses. Agatha on the other hand, does care about Sophie despite her originally wanting nothing to do with her. Book Agatha wouldn’t hesitate to help anyone despite rather she likes them or not while book Sophie would have probably let Agatha die if it served her best interests. It’s what ultimately determines them as good or evil, but by giving them an established history, it blurs that line and undermines all of their motives from the book. Sorry, that’s just my little rant about it lol

I don't understand why this movie made the choices it did if it knew it was getting a sequel. A lot of the changes made from book to movie here only work if the movie is a stand alone film. Like, if this is a stand alone film, yeah it sucks to cut August, but we have to keep the movie a manageable length and he doesn't *need* to be there. But if you're anticipating needing to adapt the second book, then August has to be in this movie.
If this is a stand alone then, okay sure Sophie can be a halfway decent person and the moral can be we're all human. But if this is a series then Sophie needs to actually be a bad person.

Since I was very rusty on the story, I went in with a new perspective. I used to be one of those people who got angry when even one thing from the book was changed for the movie but I like people getting creative and doing new things. I write a lot of fanfiction so this comes from me rewriting my fave stories all the time. As long as the movie is good, the characters are memorable, and there's a powerful theme, it's good. Also Sophie's costumes were badass! Her character arc gave me Cruella vibes.

I don't ubderstand the grades here, because as much as i remember, in the book you needed to get a Fail three times IN A ROW, not three times IN GENERAL, to get expelled, plus there were grades from 1 to... 20, as i remember, so at least trying was enough for the most of the students to get a grade higher than Fail, and getting three Fails in a row was specifically said to be very rare. Here it was said you just need to get "three fails", means you probably just need to get them in general, which is... just ridiculous. Look at how easy teachers are ready to give student a Fail for not smiling well enough, for falling from the horse you tried to ride for the first time in your life, for fainting from uncontrollable phobia. If the Fails needed to be three in a row to get a student expelled - it would be more understandable as motivation in a form of "get better or you will be expelled", which is cruel, but not ridiculous. Here you can get expelled on your basically first day of the school just from being new to it, because again, there's no ranks from 1 to 20 to replace a Fail, and each Fail will still count even if you won't get it on your next class. So basically you need to survive five school years (as i remember, this schools has five years in the book) without getting a Fail three times in general, when you can easily get it due to not having enough skills yet or just being clumsy and fearful like Gregor. Is it even possibe? Not failing three times in five years? What school in a world gives you a step to the grave - which a Fail is in this movie - for not being good enough from the first try? It's a SCHOOL, it's supposed to TEACH you. So Gregor died because he was clumsy and fearful, and the school refused to teach him to be better at being a prince, which it was supposed to do, instead giving him three Fails and throwing him away? With such system half of the students would be expelled by the end of the first year! It's just ridiculous!
Also, why Agatha did not get terrified when Gregor said her he got a second Fail? He had ONE FAIL LEFT before they'll turn him into something, and by that time she should have already seen that he fails too easily to not get it! I would get panicked for that boy!

So I don’t know if you know this but the author of the books actually wanted the movie to NOT be just a plain re-write but on a silver screen leading to some of the changes,s

Overall I would say that the movie missed the whole point of the 1st book - that appearance doesn't equal reality - which is present in almost every feature of the school/characters:
Sophie looks beautiful so (almost) everyone thinks she's good, but she's actually evil - which is why her whole arc is accepting who she is on the inside
Agatha looks ugly so (almost) everyone thinks she's evil, but she's actually good - which is why her whole arc is accepting who she is on the outside
Tedros looks like a charming, fantastic prince but is actually really stupid, paranoid, impulsive, prejudiced and violent (the movie erased all his character flaws so that he's a love interest for Agatha rather than an actual character with motivations and a character arc)
The fairies look good but are actually evil
The wolves look evil but are actually good
People think the School Master is good because that's what it looks like, but he's evil
The School for Good looks lovely, but is actually an oppressive, outdated place with rigid gender stereotypes (which almost entirely missing from the movie/not pointed out AT ALL which made me angry)
The School for Evil looks awful but is actually better than Good
Grim (who was also missing, again I am angry) looks cute and lovely, but is very violent
Beatrix looks good but is not very nice
Agatha's speech about how Good isn't 'fair and lovely' it's 'honor and valor' was also really important for this
Plus the only character who can see past this appearance vs reality thing is the BLIND one (who got axed from the movie) which was a nice detail
Even Lady Lesso (who they implied was a Reader which made me again quite angry haha) and Professor Dovey fall for these appearances when they are supposed to be the intelligent, wise mentor characters (which the movie forgot) which sets up their arcs for the book (especially Dovey)
Really I just think that this movie was VERY thematically different from the book

You know what, I’ve considered what you said and now that I think about it. I think that they really should have a made it into a series instead of a movie if they made it series they would have a had more time to progress the story and the characters which I personally think would be better for the series.

Oof I actually liked this movie, it was fun and cute. I saw some plots that I didn’t like (Tedros and Agatha’s romance) but everything was cool. The world building was interesting and I could see Sophie being the evil one. As she would say multiple times throughout the film Agatha doesn’t not belong at the good school.

    • @johannaelloso9418
      @johannaelloso9418 2 ปีที่แล้ว

But the whole point of it was that the audience was supposed to believe that Sophie was good and that Agatha was evil, until later. And she wasn't saying that to be mean because in their world, they have these specific ideals about what "good" people are and what "bad" people are, so I wouldn't say that believing Agatha is evil makes her evil. Because that's how everyone in their world was conditioned to believe.

@@johannaelloso9418 well, I mean I interpreted it different, Sophie did seem like somebody that’s manipulative. Saying how her friend isn’t the good one. that’s not a good friend. Plus I haven’t read the books, so I have no none of the same reservations that most people in this comment section did.

I listened to the books during work, after I watched the movie, and I LOVED the first book, the second book was weird, and I couldn't finish the third.
In the movie, I wish they would have showed us the exercises, the rankings and the morphing into animals

I loved the books I made it to like half way through the 4 before I stopped reading the series but honestly I’m so sad that the removed the groom room scene with Agatha’s character cause that was my favorite self realization scene like ever I hated the movie but I loved the aesthetics of it but the plot was hot garbage but the toxic remix was worth watching it. But whole nemesis bomb was weird cause in the book it had a build up with the nemesis dreams and idk I have a lot of bones to pick with the movie I hope they don’t waste money on a second one but there’s 3 kissing booths sooo

For me there where to may characters and not the same level of development in everyone so they ended up being just caricatures of themselves: Tedros, Beatrix and her minions... I personally also didn't like how Miss Dovey was portrayed but...okey and also Agatha, Sofía is to beautiful!!! And giving her unruly curly hair doesn't makes it less obvious and the point of Agatha is that her beauty wasn't so obvious from the begging!!!

This was my favourite book as a child, I had all the books and I ordered the Ever Never Handbook as soon as it came out. I loved the book because of it's darker contents, I was like 11 when I read it. The movie was terrible, I really didn't like, none of the characters were interesting and everything was too rushed.
Also I thought the school master was professor Sader, and was very sad when he was not. The Evil School master was pretending to be the good one so everyone was tricked!

When I first watched movie in Netflix, I didn’t know it was a book series. I liked it, but I hated the ending. because like why fall in love with a guy you barely know and killed someone and I kind of hated her friend for not care about her best friend intel like the very end or the very beginning it just didn’t make any sense to me at all . I also never cared for the prince because he was with like three different girls two being the main characters and one other rich girl in good school and his development sucked in opinion. i’ll be honest I like Agatha with Gregor I know he wasn’t in the book at all but they had great chemist

I enjoyed the movie anyways, I read some of the books I don't remember everything about it however what I do mostly remember about the books is it keeps you intrigued mainly because of the Mystery in the novels which I wasn't feeling that in the movie compared to harry potter, I also feel like they could've took this movie seriously without making it cheesy. Lastly even though this is promoted by netflix, I think they could've spent more time with the cgi or visual effects cause it was hit or miss throughout the whole movie.
