    When Quentin says that "you have a father's love for the child" to Giles, that's the point I think that Buffy forgives Giles.

    Weirdly, she talked to the Watcher, the Witch and the Vampire about being powerless and never talked to Xander who has been helping her for three years with no powers and no training.

      there's nothing weird about that. she was upset that she was losing her supernatural gift and naturally shared that with people who could sympathize. if this had gone further than that, if she'd come to a point where she needed to come to terms with how to live as a normal person, then talking to xander starts to make more sense.

    His name is Jeff Kober and he's amazing!! I also loved him on Sons of Anarchy and General Hospital. He's also a really nice and interesting guy in real life. 💕

    The vampire she has to fight is such an amazing actor, he's always fantastic as any villian/bad guy. I loved his evil character in The Walking Dead too. He's got such a unique face and i wish he'd get more parts! Has your sister seen TWD? Fantastic show to binge too.
    BTW you two are my favorite reaction channel to buffy. Bel is such a hoot, she kills me.

      Thank you so much, Laurannah! Yes, Bel has seen most of TWD. She stopped watching when... well, ya know, when the guy with the bat showed up.🤯 But I watched it all and I remember seeing that actor pop up and I was like "yep, not at all surprised he's playing another bad guy." Lol. He's so good at it tho. Thanks for watching with us! ❤

    "If someone were free, they could take their daughter, or their student...or their Slayer." is a real clue to the resolution at the end. Buffy could have easily gotten Angel to take her to the show. But she's identifying with Giles as the most important man in her life...and a third party assessment of Giles' love spurs her forgiveness.
    The Cruciamentum , as a voluntary rite of passage would have tremendous value. Buffy has gotten WAY too cocky, and then her immediate succumbing to panic when confronted by Kralik, illustrates its usefulness in maturing her as a warrior.
    But conducted as a sink-or-swim surprise exercise, and emphasizing the control and loyalty check aspects, is indicative of how the Council views the Slayer as a disposable weapon, instead of a literally priceless asset. Buffy(and presumably, other Slayers) has literally saved the World. What is the plural of Apocalypse?

    • @Sisnerdly
      @Sisnerdly  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that the proper plural form is "apocalypses". But I'd rather say "apocali." It just rolls off the tounge better. Lol! Thanks for watching feudist!

    Helpless was a very good episode exploring trust and betrayal. Many were so angry watching this at the time that Giles could do such a thing. You can see the anger Buffy has towards both Giles and The Council and just know she will want get her revenge on The Council in the future, and yes The Council are highly irritating throughout the whole show. This episode reminds us of course that Buffy is indeed human, and all the weaknesses and fears that go along with that. Even though she passes her test, we still feel cheated for her you can see Giles hates doing it too, and has nothing but contempt for Quentin Travers. This episode actually was a watershed for Buffy as she was now truly leaving her adolescence behind and becoming an adult. A very touching scene at the end when Giles tends to Buffy's wounds. A very good but disturbing episode.

      Yes, these sister pay attention, get into the show and tell it like it is. Most gen z kids reactors have to keep saying "I didn't see that coming" or incessantly predict the outcome for every scene. However, they all eventually quit doing that to just sit back and enjoy this classic.

    Just how many slayers, I wonder, actually survive this "test"? Wouldn't be the first time the claimed reason for something is the real reason. I mean, that younger slayers would be much easier to control than older, more mature ones has _nothing_ to do it.

  • @hardybryan
    @hardybryan ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bad parents everywhere you look this season.

  • @Buffy8Fan
    @Buffy8Fan ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The power trip the patriarchy social system The Watchers are on believe that they need to control the slayer. That is the underlying real reason for the test. The whole purpose of the real test is that if the slayers survive, The Watchers have a more obedient slayer to their cause, and if they don't, they can start afresh with a naïve, young girl who doesn't understand that she is being used to wage The Watchers war. There is something to be said about the idea behind the test, but if you cannot guarantee the slayer's safety, it isn't worth it and what is said above is the Watchers Council's true goal.
    Buffy learning Angel stalked her is one of the few times she comes off way too close to Bella Swan. I think the only reason it works is because of the mindset she's in at this time concerning her relationship with Angel is confused and she's supposed to be that way. Hugging him while acknowledging it (and Angel's metaphor of how he feels) was gross. If she learned about his stalking before their break-up and was all right with it, it would be 100% Bella Swan and undefendably toxic.
    The point of Hank Summers missing Buffy's birthday is that he's becoming more distant. He'd already been pulling away since the divorce and Buffy feared it was her fault, as was her fear in 1x10 _Nightmares._ Now her fears are more real than the supernatural fix that 1x10 showed. The last time she's seen her dad was the summer between season one and two. So, also the reason Buffy is so excited about their ice show trip is because there wasn't one the previous year and she's not not acknowledging that fact as well as stating it was a yearly father/daughter event. Thus the flowers go in the garbage when he doesn't show up.
    It's not just that she has no slayer strength, it that her muscles, in general, are weak.
    I love the tone of the climax of the episode. The most horror movie moment in the series. Technically the whole episode plays like a '90's slasher horror movie. Buffy even goes up the stairs when she shouldn't. Good gag without breaking the horror tension or winking at the camera.
    I love that the camera holds on Buffy when Quentin Travers is saying Giles has "a fathers love for the child." It shows, to me, that despite Giles doing what he did, he and Buffy have a starting point to fix things now that she is aware he cares about her that way. And from _Never Kill a Boy on the First Date_ until Travers revealed said fact to Buffy, her and Giles's relationship has been about their dynamic as a watcher and a slayer. This episode shows that with her biological father not willing to be around, Buffy was hoping he would go to the show with him, but she didn't know, "[Giles] had a father's love for [her]." He just has to fix the mistakes he made with her. Quentin's words were a good first step in Buffy's eyes, I feel.
    David Fury, as a freelance writer, wrote _Helpless_ with the intent that Giles would be rehired at the end, until it was realized the character could be explored more if he were fired. It initially panicked the freelance writer, who as a fan, realized he could have long lasting effects on the show even as a freelance writer. He explained this in a TH-cam interview of writers and cast members talking years after the show was over.
    Xander's last moment is meant to come off as comical, but whether the character realizes it or not, it isn't. If he had been able to open it, it would've been worse. Both his lines do and would've aged the joke, but him not being able to, showed how dumb it was to suggest "sometimes you need a big strong man" in any time period.

    • @Sisnerdly
      @Sisnerdly  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow! I did not know that about David Fury or the Giles story line. I'm gonna have to go watch some more interviews. Clearly, I've missed some important information. I'm so glad Giles stayed unemployed. Can you inagine the rest of the series without the Magic Box?! Lol. Thanks Buffy8Fan! Always so informative.

    I hated Giles for a while in this episode, but rushing into the house to assist really helped. Still a bit of a mutherfucker, though.
    And i like how much they made it look like a horror movie. But attacking Joyce, really? That's going over the line a little.

    They got the watchers in training here to play the equivalent in Supernatural for their watcher storyline. The absolute worst season of that show & the most shamless rip-off of Buffy they did. A that's saying something somethings considering the show was created to replace buffy
