I love that when he went to Buffy and Angel, the scene changes to this super dramatic, soap-opera scene. It's how Xander sees those moments, not how we or Buffy would normally see the moment. I love getting a little insight into his world view, because being a normal guy surrounded by slayers, witches, vamps and werewolves, things have got to be over the top way too often.
My favorite episode of the series.

"I like the quiet," is Xander's most bad ass line in the show.

If anyone was wondering, Zeppo was one of the Marx Brothers. Groucho, Harpo, and Chico Marx were the brothers that were famous. Zeppo was the one no one remembered.

Xander gets a lot of hate, but if he hadn't gotten Jack to disarm the bomb it's very possible that most of the gang would have been killed and the Hellmouth remained open. So, guy with no powers saves the world.

Yep. He also brought Buffy back with the CPR in Prophecy Girl. He also was the one to pull her out of the manhole in The Harvest. He's the one that stakes Theresa in Phases. Stops Angel from killing Buffy in the graveyard in Killed By Death... and so on... and so forth. A lot of people hate him but he saves other people and the world without any powers multiple times.

And let’s not forget he resuscitated Buffy after The Master killed her in “Prophecy Girl.” He saved the world that time, too.

I always liked this episode. In the library they're dealing with some cartoon overblown version of the show, what you might imagine if you've never seen the show, and Xander goes through 3 episodes of stuff in a night. Hell of a day, really, and makes for a very fun episode.

@@seanmcmurphy4744 He saved Cordy's life in BB&B after putting her in danger for stupid and selfish reasons, so I think he deserves at most half a point for that one.

One of my favorite Xander episodes. When I first saw it, I remember thinking, "This episode is insane." And it was hilarious how all this supposed "end of world" stuff was happening in the background.
But I especially loved Xander in it. His "I like the quiet" strangely moved me in the moment of that scene.

I think The Zeppo was a brilliant episode reminiscent of the Martin Scorcese film After Hours from 1985, where the main character has crazy nightmare night getting caught up in some strange underworld he can't get away from. The Zeppo refers to one of The Marx Brothers. Groucho, Chico and Harpo were 1930s comedy legends, their brother Zeppo was considered useless in relation to the other brothers. This episode is so well constructed as we have two stories side by side, but Xander's story is the one we focus on and what would normally be the main story is sidelined. The part where he loses his virginity to Faith is also handled well, as it shows how people can hype this up as really big thing in their life, but the reality is that it is often overrated and really is so unimportant in life in general, Faith showing him the door straight away is comic genius reiterating this. The final part is great too where Xander is now not bothered by Cordelia's insults and put downs, as he know he has saved the school on his own and has grown as a person. It's so well written showing the transition towards adulthood for Xander.

thanks nobody ever seems to know about the Marx Brothers, or get the reference in the title, but of course, Xander being the class clown, he knows all about them so Cordy's zinger lands, even if it confuses most of the audience I am sure

It's not that Xander is annoying AF that gets him all the hate, it's that he's such an immature petulant little brat most of the time. This episode finally highlighted some actually character growth for him and imo started his redemption arc

Clever sendup of the series' own melodramatic side, with the overly dire apocalypse pseudo "A" plot undermined by the somewhat less serious, but no less consequential "B" plot.
I loved both Cordy roasting Xander at the beginning and him shrugging it off at the end.
The sex scene with Faith was perfectly character driven for both of them.
The fact that everyone (else)has been thoroughly and brutally beaten to a pulp at the end is just the cherry on top.
One of my favorite "Slayer" scenes is when Buffy is knocked through the doors and sent skidding down the hallway. Before she comes to a complete stop she's sprinting back into the fight.

Yes! I also love that detail at the end where they all have been injured in the fight. Did I cut that scene with Buffy flying out the doors? Can't remember but I love that one too. So many good moments in this one. Thanks for watching feudist!

The term "Zeppo" is reference to Herbert Manfred "Zeppo" Marx, the "straight man" among the Marx Brothers, a very successful comedy group in the early 1900s,. Zeppo Marx was long considered to be the most unexceptional member of the act.

I love this episode Xander is always the comic relief, but all his friends have super powers yet he is always willing to fight alongside them people always underestimate him, Without Xander Buffy would have been killed (and stayed dead) at the end of season one. I never really got why so many Buffy fans hate Xander yes he can be annoying at times but so can Buffy and Willow that's what makes BTVS so good imo nobody on the show is perfect they all make mistakes.

As someone who isn't the biggest fan of Xander I o like him in this episode and find The Scoobies decision to bench him odd considering by their reasoning Buffy should be benched as she is the one who has died and was saved by Xander giving her CPR. It doesn't matter that Xander never would've stopped the bomb if not benched. That was the writing reason it happened. In-universe though, The Scoobies have a poor reason (they don't know about the zombies and bomb so the writing reason doesn't defend why they are doing it). Especially as things are back to normal in terms of him not benched in the next episode.
The way I see the strangeness of this episode boils down to two things no other episode does:
    1. Every other episode is tied thematically in some way to Buffy even when the episode is about another character. Not this one. This episode is a Xander episode through and through.
    2. The scenes with Xander are his perspective on how he sees the world (witch is why they are over-the-top and have broad music playing). The scenes without him are not his perspective.
#2 doesn't mean he lives in a fantasy world or is crazy and needs medicated. It means his imagination activates when dealing with things he doesn't like or cannot handle. That's why Buffy and Angel are over-the top when he's around and why he says, "You should have learnt by now, if you're going to play with fire, sooner or later you're going to...I wasn't finished" when facing Dickie.
Episodes where the world ending is the background plot instead of the focus are kind of interesting, and usually fun.

I’d like to think Zander as an old man, still keeping this tale to himself, with that same self-assured smile on his face as he remembers this moment.
I mean, if for no other reason than Faith alone..! 😝✌🏽
One of the best of season, best of show; one of the best period.

  • @warrengday
    @warrengday ปีที่แล้ว

    Zander...
    ...fancies Buffy.
...dates Cordellia-whom Buffy said Buffy was like in terms of shallow-ness before becoming the Slayer ("Spordelia").
...loses his virginity to Faith, a Slayer.

  • @warrengday
    @warrengday ปีที่แล้ว

    Spoiler:
It's interesting that Zander doesn't recall how easy it is for Jack to resurrect someone when the Scoobies are looking to resurrect Buffy at the start of 6, though obviously what Willow does is bring Buffy back without any physical decay, as is shown here.
