Thank you so much, we have always been wondering how we can make some awesome baklava. It's honestly one of the best desserts it's sweet, flaky, a little bit savory. So delicious!

One more thing people, after you pour the syrup on the baklava, DO NOT COVER IT! It'll steam and make the baklava soggy, I've made baklava about 7 times, and the first time, I covered it and it got soggy, then the second time I didn't boil the syrup long enough so it didn't get absorbed by the pastry, and also the syrup and pastry were both hot, so it was just horrible, so remember to pour the syrup once its cooled over the still hot pastry, then it'll get absorbed quicker and properly. Again, DO NOT EVER COVER YOUR BAKLAVA WHEN IT IS IN THE PROCESS OF ABSORBING SYRUP.
I’ve been buying food from a sweet Turkish lady who moved to my neighborhood and just tried baklava today! Wowww. My kind of dessert. Had to see how it was made ❤️

He did a lot of local radio commercials over the years and i always knew it was him when I heard them! Funny guy too!
I made this recipe last night with my boyfriend as a date night idea. I cook and bake often, but my boyfriend doesn't at all. We each made our own batch from start to finish, and they both turned out amazing! We made the phyllo dough from scratch as per part 1 of this video, and we made the baklava exactly like this recipe. It turned out SOOO delicious. It will take a LONG time to make if you mess around like we were, but it was so worth it. Not eating it after it came out of the oven was the hardest part. We waited 40 minutes and had some while it was a little warm, but it honestly does taste better when it's just room temperature. Highly reccomend this recipe!

As a person of middle eastern descent, I've made this since I was knee high to a grasshopper. A couple of tips: don't add the syrup to hot baklava - it will make the bottom soggy and chewy (unless that's what you want); Second tip: Use a glass baking dish so you don't have to guess the color of the bottom layers.
I made this and it was inCREDible. Because I used store-bought phyllo dough it took hardly any time at all. Best part is it can sit out for a few hours and if people are late getting to your party it's still amazing later.

Since it's a Greek and Turkish dish I consider myself lucky that did have it my youth. Because it really is an amazing bite of food that should be on everyone's bucket list.
This was amazing. Indian here and I made it for my Bulgarian friend's birthday and came out perfectly. The filo cooked a lot faster so I had to reduce the temperature but the flavour of the syrup was on point and overall very delicious. Got over in less than 2 days. Thanks a lot Chef John.
The Turkish version doesn't use honey, just simple syrup. The Greeks use honey. Wars have been fought over this. Chef John has taken the hybrid approach, which the Greeks and the Turks will hate.
As a Turkish I want to write something about origin of the word of baklava. Baklava comes from two indipendent Turkish words which are 'bal' and 'oklava'. So push the two words together, balli oklava turn into baklava. In Turkish 'bal' means honey, 'oklava' means rolling pin. So baklava is etymologically a Turkish word and also a Turkish food.
Chef John: I made baklava the other day; I confess I saw several videos from which I took little somethings from but your video was the one that really taught me how to make baklava. Your instructions are extremly clear and the voice tilt makes one pay attention to every detail. I've done succesfully several recipes thanks to your videos but this was sublime, thank you so much! The baklava was a total hit even among persons that hadn't tasted one before, somebody even told me it was a slice of heaven😊 I can't begin to convey how good it was, thank you!
Oh my god thank you!!! I have had this food very rarely over the past years and i have never known what it is called!!! Im making it tonight... on a weekday at midnight
I remember my first taste of authentic Baklava 40 years ago as a teenager. I had no idea that I was in for the purest, most sensational, delectable treat the world has ever known. It seemed to intimidating to bake myself. Chef John just gave me courage to try!
O.M.G. I made your Baklava last night and now I’m a super star cook among my family. It was simple and delicious and not very hard to make. Thanks a million.
I can’t wait to make this. I made the Salisbury steak this evening. My neighbors (two 29 yr old bachelors and their gf’s) they absolutely loved it. You make baking and cooking so much fun and so easy. Love your sense of humor 😂
I love how you put the emphasis on the LAST syllable. It's almost like French but NOT quite. I feel myself getting ready for THE emphasis. You've stumbled onto SOMETHING hypnotic.
Chef John, you're by far my favorite Chef on TH-cam. About the Baklava, as an Arabic person I say you nailed it. not quite like my mother's, but pretty close. :) much love from Algeria.
Thank an' a hat tip...wonderful presentation! Baklava is one of my all time favourite desserts since I was a young boy. My sister made it. Filo dough is much more available in stores than it was 50 years ago so making this at home is so much easier now. Rolling dough out on a marble slab with a marble rolling pin is more than I want to do!
Baklava is one of the best desserts in the world. For my taste buds and texture preferences, it's absolutely the perfect dessrt imo. I love cinnamon, I love nuts and I adore pastry. Fantastic combo. I salute the original baklava creators lol
A Lebanese Jewish family I knew growing up in the 70's used ROSE Water in the syrup. I don't know how traditional or not that is but it tasted absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS! Thanks for all your magical recipes.
Just today my sister picked this up at a store. I said one day I want to make the phyllo dough and the baklava. So here I am in NY at 12:38 am looking at your videos. Easter for my family is in 2 weeks. I might just try it. I dislike store phyllo due to the use of palm oil. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for being so fun to listen to.
i agree he just starts of really high then goes down and stops and then goes really high again but its not gradual it just one massive jump which makes it extremely difficult to watch but i need to watch it because his videos are really useful
The cadence of your voice is so unique and at first I wasn’t sure but I genuinely just kind of listen to the way you talk at this point😂😂😂 I love it. 🧡💛💛
Oh man, Chef John! For once I made one of your recipes and it actually turned out exactly like the photo. Taste/texture was excellent. I used store-bough phyllo dough and I subbed 5-6 drops of orange oil for the blossom water. At first when I tasted the syrup, I was worried that the orange flavor was too strong. But after the syrup-soaked baklava had cooled for a few hours, it was the EXACT right amount. Just as you described: not enough to know that it's there, but you'd know if it was missing. I was feeling a bit rebellious, so I tried brushing the butter instead if drizzling. I guess I got lucky; my dough held up fine, so I was able to get maximum butter coverage. I might add just a half pinch more cinnamon next time, and possibly boost the two middle layers up to 4 sheets instead of 2, but honestly, it was still excellent just as is. Thanks for helping me and the wifey have a lovely dessert after dinner.
@@GelatinSpacecraft It's probably because they specialise in these types of sweets, especially during Ramadan. It's like having an Italian judge a pizza or a Frenchman judge a croissant.
i don't know about the op but this recipe looks very similar to an Arabian dish called passtila the only difference is that we put chicken or sea creatures (like shrimp fish and octopus ect.) under the nuts mixture.
Benn Limos Everybody in Eastern Europe or Middle East claims it at this point. People claiming the dish for their own country just for the sake of it is very annoying. Baklava was a dish served in the Ottoman palace back in the days, it was an important dish and it was well documented so we still have the exact recipe at this point. There are some speculations regarding the origin of the dish but I don’t think anybody else worked as hard as Turkish people to perfect it and that’s why I don’t think others have the right to see one day that Baklava gained popularity and start to call it their own. The origin may or may not be Turkish but I’d say it’s very well a Turkish dish.
Finished the baklava! 😋🥰 First time making it and also testing it, I didn’t have this treat in South America. Thanks Chef John, it came out like heaven!
I like the extraordinary stuff that you add to syrup such as honey and cloves but vanilla extract, not for sure. Orange blossom water is also used in North Africa but not in baklava's homeland. Last, eat the baklava upside down. The bottom, tender side of baklava should touch the roof of the mouth. I strongly advise you to try Sütlü Nuriye and Şöbiyet.Thx for the recipe by the way.
This looks awesome. My aunt used to make it like this and the only differences were that she spread the butter over the filo layers with her fingers, and when making the syrup after the cloves she'd add a little lemon zest. I'm going to try this one. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
im syrian and this is a traditional food in my country, now that being said i actually never made it my self as its kind of difficult to make , but this recipe of yours is much easier! finally i will dare to make it this weekend, thank you ^_^
I made it. As Sam LSD said, it's very, hm...it's alright, nice. Bland. It isn't very much like actual "cheesecake" at all. If you like Sara Lee pound cake from the store, I imagine you'll like fluffy Japanese cheese cake. I'd be perfectly comfortable feeding it to a baby.
I made it for several occasions, and I beg to differ! If you use Cooking with Dog's recipe, the cake will definitely come out to be one of the loveliest desserts you have ever tasted.
Theophilia Hanson Same here! I come here to watch tasty looking food be cooked and end up either turning the volume all the way down or just turning it off as soon as I start hearing his insane fluctuation in his voice

Yum, born in Armenia, this was on all of the holiday tables, absolutely delicious, my mom used to make those thin filo dough layers by hand back in the 80s since there was no prepared ones at that time.

I remember my first taste of authentic Baklava 40 years ago as a teenager. I had no idea that I was in for the purest, most sensational, delectable treat the world has ever known. It seemed to intimidating to bake myself. Chef John just gave me courage to try!
Remember, people: You are the Frank Sinatra of your baklava !
Spaceship bit of a stretch but ok.
If he makes it here we can make it anywhere
Spaceship
I did it my way.
@@terrypeart3875 😂
I grew up on this stuff. Mom always made homemade phyllo dough. It really is delicious and it truly was a labor of love to make. Thanx mom 💕
I really like his voice.
It's full of joy and kindness and everything beautiful... It's like a baklava in voice form
It is that wicked baklava. It does something to his voice😕👻💙
This may be my new favorite channel. Every recipe we try, has left us just shy of weeping in foodie joy..
O.M.G. I made your Baklava last night and now I’m a super star cook among my family. It was simple and delicious and not very hard to make. Thanks a million.
I always see these yummy treats on sale during the Saturday morning markets. I will need to try some soon.
Baklava is Greek
fahd s baklava knows many variations, in many different countries.
Oh boy here we go
fahd s It started somewhere in Turkey of Armenia, but with the emergence of the Greek empire it spread west and throughout the Middle East.
Annabelle The Alpaca it was ottoman and was spread by the Ottoman Empire
I remember my grandmother making this with 200 layers, so so good. As a kid I would help clean the nuts with a hammer.
I believe of all the non-Turkish baklava videos, yours is the most visually authentic one chef! Nice as always.
uhm im pretty sure the bad puns are the sole reason why atleast 40% of us are here, no??
Oh heck yeah! I watch these vids while munching on a Big Mac!
Last of Brunnen G hahaha so true
Last of Brunnen G Yes. And, also, Lexx!!
Yup. And of course the recipes.
"We do not under any circumstances want a soggy bottom" 😂😂😂
hahaaaaa...me too I laughed
I read your comment just as soon as I heard him say that. The timing....😂😂
That level of crispy DESERVED a rake of fork tongs!!
I didn't want to wreck the perfect top! ;)
Food Wishes You can wreck my perfect top
he is the King Kong of his fork tongs.
I'll just have to go re-watch your onion rings video and imagine the glory that could've been :)
you do know we love your puns :-)
You are the Mario Bava of your baklava.
Turn around Chef John...I wanna see your puns...
nice one
Thanks for giving me the idea :-)
your welcome :-)
Baklava is one of the best desserts in the world. For my taste buds and texture preferences, it's absolutely the perfect dessrt imo. I love cinnamon, I love nuts and I adore pastry. Fantastic combo. I salute the original baklava creators lol
This goes perfectly with Arabic coffee 👌🏽👌🏽😍
Baklava! Woooot! Yeah! Right on! I'm SO happy right now! I'm so happy!
Lucky Jester well did you make it?
I was just going to ask if op made it. With all that running around, you'd think so. XD
No he was too busy running around ام مقداد
A Lebanese Jewish family I knew growing up in the 70's used ROSE Water in the syrup. I don't know how traditional or not that is but it tasted absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS! Thanks for all your magical recipes.
With all the recent uploads I'm going to open up a bakery
That's the spirit!!!!!!
After all, you are the Mike Arredondo of selling your Bizcocho.
Feta Cheezz lmao 🤣😂
Karen Ortiz I'm glad I was able to make ur day 😬
OMG you voice tempo is insane. Like running up and down a hill
That's what makes it hilarious😂😂😂
haha
It’s called up-speak
Just today my sister picked this up at a store. I said one day I want to make the phyllo dough and the baklava. So here I am in NY at 12:38 am looking at your videos. Easter for my family is in 2 weeks. I might just try it. I dislike store phyllo due to the use of palm oil. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for being so fun to listen to.
I love how he raises his voice in literally every sentence. "So we go ahead and BUilT Up OuR bottom"😂
Whatever you do, you don't want a soggy bottom, remember.
Sakucheery12 He's funny i like the part where he said And if u know what ur doing which i dont ?! Lol
Sakucheery12 LOL
I actually hate it. The up and down modulation makes it almost unwatchable - and I love his cooking.
i agree he just starts of really high then goes down and stops and then goes really high again but its not gradual it just one massive jump which makes it extremely difficult to watch but i need to watch it because his videos are really useful
What a sweety, lovely instructions an he sounds so happy and gentle
Oh chef John never fails to make me laugh while watching his videos! Been 7 years since I subscribed and still his sense of humor is amazing.
I love the narrator and the script and
“If you feel you have a much better way, feel free to keep that to yourself.”
As an Arab guy, I'd say this looks absolutely delicious! Can't wait to try this recipe myself
as an american guy, I'm confused why you being Arab matters... be human bro ;)
Colm O'driscoll i believe baklava is a levantine dish so...
FINALLY, but please, do kenafeh next, if you don't know what kenafeh is, it is the best dessert ever
this mans voice is so calming i love this channel
Finished the baklava! 😋🥰 First time making it and also testing it, I didn’t have this treat in South America. Thanks Chef John, it came out like heaven!
Thank ypu soo much Chef John. Thank you for putting up with me and all my harrasment.
I hope that you've finally found peace. xD
Your name is vaguely familiar.
Sebastian Michelis I had been rooting for you, my dude
Thank you Sebastian!
I hope you make some!
Bless you for making this recipe with orange blossom water! That stuff smells and tastes amazing!
“Feel free to keep that to yourself” LMAOOOO
꧁Long Legs꧂ Chef John is a funny guy!
I have had it in Singapore. My brother had got it from Turkey. My it tasted so yummm... It is a very very rich delicacy. All of us enjoyed it 😊👍
I can onlymspeak for myself, but, I love your bad puns and vague references!😍
At this point TH-cam pretty much controlls my life. No idea why this is in my recommended, but i’ll be making this.
This looks awesome. My aunt used to make it like this and the only differences were that she spread the butter over the filo layers with her fingers, and when making the syrup after the cloves she'd add a little lemon zest. I'm going to try this one. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
im syrian and this is a traditional food in my country, now that being said i actually never made it my self as its kind of difficult to make , but this recipe of yours is much easier! finally i will dare to make it this weekend, thank you ^_^
Please make Fluffy Japanese Cheesecake!
I don't even know what this is and I still want you to make it!
madokaism 木之本 Baumkuchen is a layered cake, not a cheesecake :)
Sam LSD
It really is overrated, To me it tastes like Egg cake because all I can really taste is the egg.
I made it for several occasions, and I beg to differ! If you use Cooking with Dog's recipe, the cake will definitely come out to be one of the loveliest desserts you have ever tasted.
Just used this recipe, everyone in my family said it was the best they've ever had. Thanks!!
omg the rise and fall in your voice kills me lmao but i love your recipes
Theophilia Hanson thank god i wasnt the only one!
Theophilia Hanson Same here! I come here to watch tasty looking food be cooked and end up either turning the volume all the way down or just turning it off as soon as I start hearing his insane fluctuation in his voice
I'm a voice actor/voice over artist... this video is killing me :(
dear jesus, I had to turn off the volume and just watch.
JJ Mars liar
I am looking forward to making this. Baklava is my favorite. I have always been a bit intimidated by it, but no more! Thank you for sharing how to make this!
I made this following your instructions , and I have to say it's worth the effort !!. It was soooo good!
Notification squad, I love baklava. It's one of my favorite desserts
I submitted this like 3 years ago 😂😂😂 finally!!!
Yum, born in Armenia, this was on all of the holiday tables, absolutely delicious, my mom used to make those thin filo dough layers by hand back in the 80s since there was no prepared ones at that time.
