Don't forget to change out the nylon plug every year when you flush the tank. The plug is part of the pressure safety system with a Suburban water heater.

Drain: run hot water first; put as much baking soda down the drain as you can get; pour vinegar; close the stopper. That last part is important as it will force the goo down and out.

Next time when you do the baking soda and vinegar, heat 1 cup of vinegar WITH one hot water and do it again. ALSO heat it in your microwave and you can clean your microwave at the same time. 😉

Regarding teflon tape, wind the tape so that the tape goes with the threads. If your threads are righty-tighty, put the tape on with the loose end on the left at the top of the threads and you wrap the tape going on clockwise around the threads. Make sense? Otherwise, the threading action will unwrap the tape as you thread in.

I'd bet this last anode rod was Aluminum and the first was Magnesium. Al corrodes at a lower rate than Mg. Which makes it a little less "sacrificial" and protective, but still plenty good enough. I seem to remember the "stock" rod in mine was Mg and all the readily available replacements were Al.

      @thomasstone4340 ปีที่แล้ว

Also wonder if some of it is because of the Teflon tape. They always drilled into me on boats never to use it on heat exchanger zincs because of the electrical connection that the anode rod needs to the water tank.

I love Ney Ney, her antics are Great! If you leave air at the top of the Hot Water tank, the Air will come out your Faucets. There is no reason you can't use household drain cleaner in an RV!

  • @rvhome5599

Hanks, some helpful tips from 5 year full time rver’s( till this year now we are part time)
there is a special screen they make to go in the shower drain, I believe KYD showed it and we tried it and love it… it keeps the hair out of the drain so it doesn’t plug up. It’s called the TubShroom Ultra Revolutionary Bath Tub Drain Protector Hair Catcher/Strainer/Snare, Stainless Steel, Stainless Combo! You can get it at lowes, Home Depot or Amazon. This works great! Never put anything down your shower drain as most new Rv’s no longer have a pea trap in the shower drain, they have what is called a bladder and this material can be punctured easy and it is not recommended to pour any chemicals down the drain or vinegar and extremely hot water as it can damage the bladder! Your plastic drain snake can even puncture it.

You need to get an extension to use with the socket.
Wrap some electrical tape around the head of the new anode, it wont take much just 1 or 2 layers, you want it to fit firmly into the socket. Then use the extension and socket as a handle to start the anode into the water heater. Once its tight peel off the tape.

It is amazing the yuk that builds up in drains! I haven't had to do that in a camper yet but do have a device similar to yours that I will occasionally use in the shower drain to grab the hair. It is super satisfying to have the water drain nicely again after a thorough cleaning.

Hi Hanks and Hi Dexter, A tip that i picked up from watching an RV tech that was flushing out the water heater. He said, do not buy the anode rod that come 2 in a pack from Amazon with the black tip because they have the potential to break off. He said to stick with the Camco anode rod. As they are better. He also mentioned to clean the water tank and replace the anode rode every 6 months. He also opened the top valve to let the air out as well. Just sharing what i learned from another RV TH-cam channel. Take care Hanks Family ❣️

next time you want to drain the hot side, if your rig has valves on the low point drains, just open the hot side and Let R rip. Also a socket extension is a big help. tip on the TPR Valve (Temperature Pressure Release) its quite common to get a small leak, after you have opened the TPR , you can go to Home Depot, Lowe's, Menard's, ect to get a replacement if you cant get it to seal by flipping it open and closed a few times. Entertaining video as always!!!!

Wait what?!? You have to replace that every year? Now I’ve got another chore added to my list. If it wasn’t for you guys I wouldn’t know these things about maintenance. Thx Hanks!

Visited the new Buc-ees in Florence SC for the first time yesterday after a weekend camping with the Boy Scouts at Lakewood Campgroud in Myrtle Beach. The brisket sandwich is killer.
I thought about you guys when I passed the RV repair center next to Lakewood where you had your camper repaired. Boy, were they busy!

I have a tankless in my airstream, and I'd say - water heaters are the real winners here. Filling your gray tank while you're waiting for the tankless water heater to get warm and flush out the stale cold water in the lines - what were they thinking? I'd prefer a tank.

Last trailer did not have an anode rod, only a nylon plug threaded into the drain of the water heater tank. Heard about one type of water heater where the tank is made out of a specific metal / material that is not recommending the old style sacrificial rod. (Have not researched that *hear-say story* yet.... Things keep on changing. Thanks for the fun video! Always a good time with the Hanks! Thanks!

Your timing is perfect. I was just considering changing mine. A friend changed it for me last time so I wasn’t sure how to do it myself.
Thank you for showing me how.
One question though. My anode is only 5 months old but my hot water has been smelling like sulfur. Could that be the anode or do you have any ideas what it could be?

The single best advice i could give anyone with buying an rv is make sure you buy one with a minimal of a 10 gallon water heater. We went full time with a 5 gallon. You get to rinsing in cold water with a 5, and that’s with shutting the water off in between while you soap up. Also, our 5 gallon was propane only. That uses allot of propane, especially in the winter with the furnace running as well. Our 38’ fifth wheel had the 10 gallon hot water which ran on gas or electric. We loved the electric, too. Good job on the maintenance of your rig. It will pay off in the end hanks.

We drain ours a lot more often, but we are weekend warriors. Not sure if we are doing it too often? We love the water heater rinsing wand…thanks for the link!
