Use both the 4" hole saw AND a 4.25" hole saw together. The 4" will fit in the existing hole and the 4.25 will cut out the .25".

Others have commented about nesting one hole saw inside the other. If necessary, put a spacer / washer between the two so that the smaller hole saw extends further than the larger hole saw.

My wife is a ER Nurse of nearly 30 years and I am a retiring Paramedic after 45 years in Fire and EMS. You guys are my hero’s! I bought our 37’ 5th Wheel this summer. Came with the Splendid Washer and dryer. First lesson learned was don’t wash large brand new cotton blankets in RV Washer, plugged up the drain pipe. Second lesson learned; I saw someone already wrote keep grey tank open when doing wash. Absolutely one load can use as much as 30 gallons of water. You will know your grey tank is full when your shower backs up ;-). I put a drain pan under my washer Should have come with the combo as well. I would call Camping World back! The water sensor is also a great idea. Good Luck Y’all. Maybe will see you on the road!

😂 that happened to us! Our washing machine backed up into the shower! Lesson learned. 😂
I hate the washer dryer combo - extreme creasing when it washes then spins and dries - now I stop the cycle after washing to remove and shake out the laundry wrinkles before putting it back in and setting the dryer.

We have learned to either open the valve on the gray tank when using the washer , or be sure it is empty. The washer doesn't know when the tank gets full and can overflow at the drain . Even with a sensor, by the time you turn the washer off you'll be mopping .

To prevent splintering when you first start drilling, start drilling with the drill in reverse until you get a circle in the wall.

I just watched your washer/dryer install. That looked like it was fun and definitely a learning experience. There is only one thing I would like to recommend. • @kckettridge
    @kckettridge 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

You guys did a great job on the install. I wouldn't worry much about the aluminum stud you drilled through. There is enough rigid foam insulation encased around it that it shouldn't be a problem. I like how Dexter showed us his "sidewalk superintendent" skills.

  • @ajherry837
    @ajherry837 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

We enjoyed the install you two! We were waiting to see Dexter with the instructions…lol.
The sticker is NEVER where it’s supposed to be…I think it’s put on while blindfolded.
Also, don’t use silicone; use Butyl tape for a watertight seal.
For your next project, you can replace the flex with a solid, insulation wrapped dryer tube. We know from experience, that flex tube will become an unwanted heat source.

Another tip for using hole saws: Once the hole saw bites into the workpiece, stop drilling. Remove the hole saw from the drill and install a small 1/8 inch bit. Drill 4 holes with the 1/8 bit in the perimeter of the large circle. Just place the small bit in the grove made by the hole saw at 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock. Drill those small holes all the way through. Next, put the large hole saw back on and complete your cut. The small holes will help prevent the hole saw from overheating, they will give waste material (dust and chips) a place to go, and they will help prevent binding. You will be amazed how much easier it is to cut a clean hole. I learned this trick years ago in my contracting business and never went back to doing it the old way. Good luck Hanks. We love you!!

My wife and I did a combo install in our motorhome last summer. The combo weighed in at 335lbs. We had to get it in the doorway (had to remove the grab bar) by sliding it up some 2x6 lumber. I then had to go and purchase a hydraulic lift table because we had to get it over 32 inches high to get past the fireplace shelf leading to the bedroom (no way we could lift it that high). The lift table only went to 30 inches so used some 4x4 and plywood. We then had to get it up to 35 inches to slide (well force)it in the top cabinet. Then had to lean over the top (only about 15 inches of room) while standing on a 3 step ladder to make the vent connection and then push everything back. First time we ended up pinching the hoses and had to take it out and do it again. Drilling the vent hole was the easy part, used a stud find to make sure there was nothing in the way. Don't forget the leg locking tabs to keep the machine from bouncing when going down the road. P.S. we are both over 70 and we will never attempt this again!

In the morning when it's cooler, take a look at the outside wall and see where the changes in condensation are, when the conditions are right you'll see the framing. Take a picture for later reference. Not for hole cutting but so you know what that horizontal frame beam is connected to. I would guess it's a stability cross member and in that case shouldn't be a big issue. Also your cut forms an arch which is a stable shape.

If you ever need to make a hole bigger when using a hole saw here's an easy fix. Get a piece of wood like 1/8 thick cut square that is bigger than the hole you need to make. Then you can either screw that piece onto the wall or use a hot glue gun to attach it temporarily over the smaller hole. You can then use the hole saw to drill the hole bigger and then remove the scrap of wood.

A lot of those studs are 2x2 so it looks like he nearly drilled all the way through. That whole side of the trailer is going to completely fall off going down the road and the vortex will rip the washing machine right out the side.

    • @bounderchris
      @bounderchris 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@BarkyWalruslol, i think that piece of aluminum was there for the vent to be drilled into… they do things like that, for example when you have your antenna on the roof, or the ladder, they put sheets of aluminum down for something to bite into…

    • @BarkyWalrus
      @BarkyWalrus 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@bounderchris I’m aware they do that. I’ve drilled plenty of holes in numerous campers. A wood filled aluminum tube, that is the same construction as the support structure of the camper seems like an interesting choice from the factory as a drill through location and a bit over kill for four little screws to hold a vent cover, where typically they just go through the fiberglass laminated luan with screws and slap silicone on it. One thing is certain. That stud is holding up the entire wall of the trailer and it’s going to fail like a final destination movie.

Hey Hanks, love ya’ll. Look for you every week. I have been looking into this combo washer myself but have been warned that it takes forever to run (that isn’t an issue for me), that it does not dry properly (although I believe that is an issue for the non-vented) And that it holds like 1 towels and one shirt (which cannot be realistic).
If you could, please demonstrate the use of the washer. How much clothing (use towels or something) that washer holds at once, how long it runs per wash & dry. How dry do the clothes come out?
Would appreciate any demo you can. There are only one or two others who show this. Thank you.

A tip for anyone needing to drill through the outside wall like this. Take the smallest drill bit and drill some test holes from the inside. You only need to about .5 inch deep. You're just checking for studs and it's not very noticeable. Drill every inch or so until you find the clear 5 inch section you're looking for. You should only need a few test drillings.

We installed a stackable washer and dryer in our Rockwood trailer and hubby did his homework first...First of all, our sticker was in a completely wrong spot that said "Drill Here". Thank goodness he didn't believe it. Next he drilled a small hole where he guessed it should be. Next he took a wire hanger and poked around inside the wall to make sure there was nothing that he would hit while drilling a big hole. Three years later, his install has been perfect and we have youtube to thank for the heads up.

Additions for suggestion.... Get a dishwasher water catch pan to put underneath machine. Maybe even a foam or rubber mat under that for vibration and shock absorption. The sensor is a good extra touch as well. On the 4.25 hole to the outside.. (its in now so maybe not) but use spray foam to fill the gap. Helps with vibration and also insulates. I already mentioned in a reply to someone elses comment, on the side wall "hole", you could have or should have put the 4.25 hole saw on then the 4.0 on next... 4 goes in hole you made and acts as guide. You're done but hope these suggestions help the next person.

Not sure if anyone else tossed this one out but I thought I would share an idea to enlarge a hole once you cut it. You can take a small piece of luan, or plywood and attach it over the hole you just cut. Then you can use your new hole saw and go through that new piece and the existing hole and the bit will bite just fine.

Haven't seen a comment on the sewer line, so you'll definitely want to tie down the hose where it enters the drain tube. Those can easily pop out from the pressure of pumping the water out of the washer.
If you notice, there's a hole on the plastic bend that you can zap strap to the drain. If there's no hole to attach the zap strap to, you can fasten it to the plastic backing in your little "wet bay" with a small self-tapping screw.
Love following you guys on your adventures!!

Nice work you two! I love how you keep working past the obstacles. Couple suggestions, definitely replace the water lines with braided lines, especially in an RV. Second, instead of using the collapsible vent line, replace it with a solid vent line, less potential lint collection and you won't have to worry about something in the cabinet piercing the vent line.

Uh-oh, need to make a hole saw sized hole bigger?
We've all been there, done that, and tried to fix it, but probably failed miserably in the process even though the end result "works".
These days, I have a hole saw kit with an interchangeable arbor pilot bit (the drill bit in the middle) and can swap out different sized hole saws onto that arbor bit. So, I just put the desired, larger hole saw onto the arbor, size up a hole saw blade for the too-small hole, add the smaller hole saw onto the arbor bit, and use the smaller hole saw as a guide in the too-small hole to drill the new, larger hole, but that wasn't always the case.
So a long time ago, I wrote down a little 3 step reminder sticky note that I still keep with my hole saws for what I found that worked for me 99% of the time:
*Hole Plug --> Center Bit --> Guide Hole*
That's all there is to Mr Sticky Note, but for a better explanation of the sticky note:
    ********************
Here's how you can do it in 3 easy steps:
** If you drilled the wrong sized, too-small hole:
    ********************
1 - find the circle "plug" piece that you just drilled out of the too-small hole
2 - insert the center hole of the "plug" onto the new hole saw drill/guide bit
3 - line up the "plug" in the exiting hole and drill out the larger hole using the "plug" as a guide for the larger hole saw
    - clean up as necessary
    - enjoy your new, bigger hole!
    Note:
    - if drilling through an aesthetically sensitive area, tape off the backside edges of the hole where the new hole will be to reduce blowout when finished drilling the hole
    - if drilling through an aesthetically sensitive area, first drill in reverse-mode to cleanly "score" the wall before drilling in forward-mode to complete drilling the hole
    - if you don't have the "plug" piece, drill out a new plug from a piece of scrap material (wood, plywood, drywall, etc..) using a holesaw that matches the smaller hole, then follow the above steps.
    ********************
Now, if you don't have the smaller "plug" piece, you don't have a hole saw that fits the smaller hole, you only have a hole saw for the new, larger hole and you don't want to buy a hole saw for the smaller hole to make the smaller "plug":
    ********************
1 - find a piece of scrap material (wood, plywood, drywall, etc..) that's bigger than your current hole
2 - drill out the new, larger hole in the scrap material
3 - cover the current hole with the scrap material that has the new, larger hole and line up the holes to have an even gap around the edges between the smaller and larger holes
4 - attach the scrap to the wall (nails, screws, tape, etc.. whatever keeps the guide from moving on you)
5 - line up the larger hole saw blade in the newly created scrap "guide" hole
6 - drill the new hole
    - clean up as necessary
    - enjoy your new, bigger hole!
    Note:
    - if drilling through an aesthetically sensitive area, tape off the backside edges of the hole where the new hole will be to reduce blowout when finished drilling the hole
    - if drilling through an aesthetically sensitive area, first drill in reverse-mode to cleanly "score" the wall before drilling in forward-mode to complete drilling the hole
    ********************
Honestly, I'd say that when I mess up a hole saw sized hole (which, I swear, feels like every other time I use a hole saw) it's because I need a bigger hole than what I just drilled, so I just kept my little sticky note with my hole saws and wrote the other methods down in my notes app for if Mr Sticky Note ever fails me and I need to search for the other methods later (which I think has only been once or twice in years and years). Then again, I've certainly gone too big on the needed hole size on more than one occasion .... which is always a terrible can of worms of options for remedying that I truly don't wish on anybody. Eventually, I'm sure I'll get around to measuring it right the first time....surely...but until then, the arbor bit and Mr Sticky Note can keep coming to my rescue.

I learned a valuable lesson drilling drains in my custom-built RV: If you screw up, get a piece of plywood and drill a hole the size you want through it. Then put the plywood over the hole that is too small and use that to hold your hole saw in place while you drill through.

When I had a motorhome was planning to install a CB. Had to mount the antenna to a metal structure. One morning it was all the perfect weather conditions and dew formed on the outside, expect for where the aluminum studs ran due to them being close to the inside temp of the RV. Like a skeleton. Quick took several pics all around it. Saved them for future reference. Now I knew where I could drill/mount anything down the road.

I use a stud finder that flashes and blinks when it spots plumbing or electrical wires. It will also detect metal plates.. it’s not the newer x-ray type just a simple type you can get at HD. Works great and prevented me from drilling holes where I shouldn’t.

Tip. Drill Just enough with the hole saw from the inside to get thought the Luan, then peel it off to see what's behind. Now, drill the pilot hole all the way through and then drill from the outside.

Great job you two! If you're concerned about the aluminum section you drilled out, all you have to do is get a foot or so of flat aluminum (maybe a 1/4" thick) and screw on the inside to the stud with multiple screws. That way the stud is supported across the section that was removed. Good luck.

Yeah, I installed our by myself, and at 65 years young then it went pretty good I also watched a lot of TH-cam videos before I drilled that 4.24' hole in the side of our 5th wheel. Our had the sticker that you were talking about but I have heard that sometimes they don't put those in the correct spot, so what I did to make sure I didn't hit metal I took one or two magnets and slid them on the side of the inside wall and if it stuck I know that is a metal stud.
The dealer told me that to install the washer & dryer combo it was going to cost me 2,700 dollars, lol, well I bought the washer & dryer for about $1k and installed it myself, but once you get it installed we were so glad we did. Oh one more thing when I drill the 4.24" hole in my 5th wheel I use that blue painter tape so the fiber glass wouldn't rip but I see that it came out pretty good, you are going to love it.

You ALWAYS want to drill from the inside out in an RV. Loosen and push the pilot bit nearly flush with the hole saw blade. Drill slowly until the inside wall paneling is cut. Stop if you see aluminum shavings. Doing this allows you to move the holesaw if you happen to choose a spot with an aluminum tube. You can glue the paneling back in and move the hole. Also some better deep wall stud finders can locate the aluminum studs.
