    The idea of not clapping between movements is relatively new.
    It was not uncommon to not only applaud but to demand an encore of a particularly brilliant movement. This true of Mozart through Mahler symphonies in Europe. As a conductor, of over 40 years experience, I remember when I was young I hated when people applauded between mvmts. Then I reached a conclusion that has stayed with me. It occurred to me that those who were clapping had never gone to a symphonic concert before, did not know the "etiquette" and clapped because they like what they were hearing for the first time. I realized how wonderful that was and ever since I have loved it whenever I conduct,

      A 'podium' is what one stands on (from Latin "pes, pedis," foot). The conductor is indeed standing on a podium. What he does not use is a lectern, the stand on which a score would be placed, if he used one.

      Haydn liked Eroica, but apparently he felt as if it completely rewrote the symphony, making Haydn's early 10-minute symphonies obsolete. I think it was just evolution. Beethoven justified each note of the 3rd, and thank God, because it's sublime.

      Exactly !
      And it seems imho, that composing this magnificent symphony ,
      with the royal D-major splendour
      and the two up-lifting and highly energetic main themes of the enthralling first movement ,
      with the enchanting beauty of the "Larghetto" and its tender melody,
      with the grim humour of its "Scherzo"
      and with the sheer vigour,
      agressive dynamics, sharp contrasts and the rhythmic ecstasy of its final movement,
      was his way or even his personal cure to overcome his deep depression and desperation with even suicidal thoughts, that had befallen him, when he realized ,
      that his hearing problems were obviously uncurable and would lead to progredient loss of his hearing until clinic deafness.
      So his second symphony is very special in this regard indeed .

      Exactly not. The piece is four movements. It needs to be acknowledged and appreciated thusly. Audiences who applaud intermittently are basically saying "I have no idea what I'm doing here"

    • @MartinHatchuel
      @MartinHatchuel 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ewetubeviewer Those people who attend music events and say "I have no idea what I'm doing here" are the people who are most to be applauded. For haven't they got out of their comfort zones and come to learn something new? Or is 'serious' music only for those who are 'educated enough?' (and is that, perhaps, why it's become elitist in so many ways?).
      Personally, I only took music to the third grade, so I really haven't even scratched the surface, and I haven't a clue about much at all: but I learn every time I listen. And - and this is what Daniel Barenboim made clear when he delivered the BBC's Reith Lectures - I feel things, and understand things in a non-verbal way when I truly listen. If other people do that too, who cares a flying shit when they applause?

    • @hastyscorpion1
      @hastyscorpion1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ewetubeviewer Why does music have to be appreciated in silence? there is no rule that says that. In fact it is only classical music that has that stigma associated with it.
      And who cares if people have "no idea what they are doing there." Beethoven is not yours simply because you know more about him. Beethoven belongs to the world and anyone who wants to listen to him.
      It is not up to you to decide how they are allowed to appreciate him.

    • @nikolaspediotidis2804
      @nikolaspediotidis2804 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because if you are not quiet while the music is playing you cant hear it well and cant apprieciate it. It is not a stigma and is not to show anyone anything is just to be possible for you and the others around you enjoy the music. If I go to metal concert I am gonna sing along,scream, jump, throw my hands in the air and thats because I am not going for the good quality of the music but to see my favorite band live and to get excited about the whole thing. In classical music I go to concerts because the quality will be actualy better than the disc.

    The audience weren't so much ill-educated (other proms videos show no such behaviour) as delighted by the entire night. The warmth of feeling directed towards the Barenboim West-East Divan project by a British audience fundamentally supportive of its ethos was unmistakable.
    Being at the classical end of Beethoven's symphonies not only was clapping historically accurate but also musically appropriate; nothing was lost, only atmosphere was gained.

    Cellos in the middle with the 1st violins and 2nd violins on the outer edges is sometimes a preferred setup, depending of course on the repertoire. Music such as this, with prominent cello lines and very distinctive parts between the two violin sections, is advantageous in that it allows the cello sound to come more to the fore when needed and provides a stereo effect with the 1st and 2nd violins separated.

    This is a really good symphony, by any standard. It sits well with the 3rd and is a real departure from the 1st. The orchestration is glorious at times. There are colours of the 3rd in this. I think, by this time, he had really learned about the orchestra. At 31 or 32, he was about to deal with the biggest challenge a musician can face, and then move on to greatness.

      Item #: SCP-066
      Object Class: -Safe-prodest- Euclid-impetus
      Special Containment Procedures: SCP-066 is to be kept in a safe-deposit box at Site 21. Personnel Level 2 or higher may perform experiments on SCP-066 after filing the relevant request forms. Researchers may log their results in Experiment Log 066-Beta.
      SCP-066 is to be kept in a tungsten carbide box in Site 21’s high-value item storage facility. Once every month, this box must be manually inspected for damage to the interior;1 if damage is present, SCP-066 must be moved to a new box. This task is performed via a robotic arm capable of performing the task in under three seconds.
      Description: SCP-066 is an amorphous mass of braided yarn and ribbon weighing approximately one kilogram. Strands of SCP-066 may be taken individually and manipulated; when this is done, a note on the diatonic scale (C-D-E-F-G-A-B) is produced by the object.
      When a set of six or more notes are produced, SCP-066 will produce a benign effect of varying nature and duration. SCP-066 will not respond to manipulation while any effect produced by it is in progress. Prior to Incident 066-2, results have included:
      SCP-066 transformed into a small calico kitten for seventeen minutes. The kitten exhibited significant friendliness and playfulness, and appeared to be declawed.
      A song lasting four minutes, acoustic guitar with vocal accompaniment by singer/songwriter [REDACTED]. The lyrics warned the listener not to use sharp objects without parental supervision.
      A small cupcake, chocolate with chocolate frosting and a lit candle stuck in the top. Notably, the tones produced prior to this effect corresponded to the opening notes of “Happy Birthday”. SCP-066 became responsive after said cupcake was consumed.
      Incident 066-2: On April 18, 2008, D-066-4437 was instructed to use a pair of scissors to remove a portion of SCP-066 for testing. However, when he began to cut it, SCP-066 rolled one meter away from him before stopping and making an unidentified squeaking sound. Before he could be provided with further instruction, D-066-4437 attempted to cut it again; SCP-066 rolled away and produced the phrase “Are you Eric?” in response. After D-066-4437 replied in the negative, SCP-066 morphed into its present state (see file photo) and began emitting loud, dissonant staccato notes until D-066-4437 was escorted from the room.
      After Incident 066-2, SCP-066 began to exhibit behavior highly inconsistent with its previous properties. SCP-066 now displays significant mobility, primarily in the form of being able to move tentacular portions of itself at very high speed. While SCP-066 is either unable or unwilling to use this ability for transportation, it will occasionally attempt to damage its containment by rubbing its strands against the side of the box, gradually wearing it down. This process appears to be unusually effective for the materials in consideration.
      Additionally, SCP-066 will automatically produce notes and effects in the presence of any human, regardless of whether that human interacts with SCP-066. This process takes a minimum of six seconds. In the aftermath of Incident 066-2, effects produced by SCP-066 have included:
      new066-2%281%29.jpg
      SCP-066, after Incident 066-2. Note: The "eyes" are capable of swiveling to track movement and light sources. Photograph taken by Agent Boggs.
      A single bee was released near the containment, stinging D-4436 before flying away. The bee was not captured. It is unknown how the bee survived.
      Beethoven’s second symphony was played at over 140 decibels, causing permanent deafness in three personnel and permanent hearing damage in eight others.
      The room containing SCP-066 experienced a sudden and complete absence of light for five hours. Personnel in the room reported hearing loud breathing behind their shoulders, although no source was apparent.
      When it is not producing anomalous effects, SCP-066 will say the name “Eric” constantly in a deep masculine voice.
      Footnotes
      1. SCP-066 consistently destroys any recording devices placed inside its containment box.

    This is the Rodney Dangerfield of Beethoven's symphonies: it don't get no respect. The Larghetto is just sublime, but while the Scherzo may sound tame today, it was one of the maddest things written up to that point and the critics hated it.
    I like the way the basses come through clearly in this recording. This symphony was written not long after Beethoven met Dragonetti, who inspired Beethoven to pay more attention to the bass parts, making them do more than just double the cello parts.

      When I took the Beethoven course at UCLA, our professor liked to point to the dark harmonic shift at 30:10 as the birth of the Romantic movement. If one has to select a single point at which Beethoven becomes himself and sets the stage for the Eroica Symphony, which is arguably the first Romantic period symphony, you heard it right there in the closing sequence of the second.
