I was not aware when I visited Leipzig about this Symphony and the song before today, being a musician from India I rarely followed western classical. However today was magical and I am writing this comment travelling back Leipzig to Berlin and listening to this on youtube on RE train. Something has changed in me today after understanding the English meaning of this song plus the legendary music from Beethoven. I am one step closer to the creator. Thank you Schiller, Thank you Beethoven.
I would say that ¨A¨ human, named L.V.Beethoven has ever created. ¨We¨ just can appreciate this genious musician and composer. I've got nothing to do with his extraordinary talent.
My father was a huge fan of Beethoven and played his music all the time, he collected the records of Beethoven's music, but only when Karajan was conducting. In the 70ties I remember that Miguel Rios performed "A song of joy", and I told my dad how much I loved it. So he sat me down and we listened to the "original". Whenever I play that piece (on a record), my father is close by.

I have lived with this and loved it for 70 years. I knew it was about joy but I had never been curious about the words because...well, I don't read and write so well. Seeing the translation is like seeing this piece in colour for the first time. I have to go away and do a bit of research and catch up on what I have been missing. Just when I thought it could not get any better. Wow!!
Yes, Schiller figured he knew more about "joy" than anyone so he wrote it in a poem. Who would appreciate it more than Beethoven, who knew so little of it.
You are right about this feeling of enjoying An die Freude in 3D or full colour for the first time. Although I don't know German, I have always wanted to enjoy the music with the original lyrics, and have even tried to listen to performances holding the German lyrics and their English translation printed side by side on a sheet of paper, but this is completely different. Feeling so happy! 😇
Before Schiller called it "to joy," he wanted to call it "to freedom." Not many have this in mind, but it is important to understand that joy at the end is the subleme result of ultimate freedom.
As i understand it, the NINTH SYMPHONY tells us that joy is the force that unites all people and peoples before God. How do you improve on that? The message is timeless.

Beethoven's 9th Symphony changed music forever. This is the welcoming of those resurrected mankind on Paradise Earth including Beethoven and all the old masters. Acts 24:15 and Revelation 21:4
I bought the 9 symphony box set including this performance for my dad in LP format probably in the 70's. I have to admit that I wore out the grooves of the album on this 9th symphony performance.
Karajan and the Berlin Phil are the pinnacle of the Beethoven symphonies even though they are the product of the 1960s. Reason is that the combination of Karajan interpretive genius and the BPO only come around once in a lifetime! Greatness.
Thank God for gifting us with such a glorious piece; it really gets to the bottom of my soul & helps my faith in the Almighty. Just came from my Catholic Church so this awesome piece has eternal meaning. I only wish that more of this world would appreciate Beethoven. 🌟🌼🇺🇸✨
This is the first time I have been able to follow along with the words to the music, beautiful! If possible, the words give the music even more depth of feeling.
I came across this by accident, and it is the most astounding video ever! Wonderfully done and Maestro Von Karajan drew out a stellar performance. Not to forget to mention the camera work...amazing. Mahalo from Hawai'i.
I have never been in the audience for this glorious work, only the chorus. I must reverse that omission! Even after 40 years I remember my part! Well, ok. I always end up singing with the recording so it's constantly reinforced in memory. After the final notes have sounded I always remember the first time, when the audience leaps to their feet cheering and carrying on almost like a football game! There you go, Dr. Kodaly, people as excited by classical music as by sports! 😊
Possibly one of the greatest piece of music written by the greatest composer and performed by the greatest orchestra by the greatest conductor of music.
I can't remember a production so slick, so simply beautiful. The music is beyond marvellous of course but the direction of this video in all respects, was superb.
Ode to Joy is a another piece that is difficult to play. I did this one in High School, what a trip it was to do. I play the clarinet. Doing the 1812 Overture was just as fun. 😊😊
Sencillamente MARAVILLOSO, MAGISTRAL DIRECCION, VIVÍA CADA NOTA MUSICAL, IMPONIA MAJESTUOSIDAD A CADA MOVIMIENTO.
I had the honour to visit the Beethoven House Museum in Bonn last spring and at the same time they had an exhibition of Bernstein and Beethoven in Berlin performing this concert. The most moving part of the exhibit was a picture of Leonard Bernstein chipping away at the Berlin Wall along with numerous other “concrete woodpeckers.”
The choir's separation and enunciation of each quarter note is top-notch! We did this in my undergrad - we had the vocal forces to do it but I felt the singing was too legato so the listeners couldn't distinguish between the syllables in the "main" (forte/fortissimo) sections.
When you listen to Beethoven's Ninth in full, you understand the reason for the legend that when the audio compact disc format was in development, someone (usually the story says it was the president of Sony, his wife, or Maestro von Karajan himself) insisted that it had to have a capacity of 72 or 74 minutes, as long as the runtime of some performances of this symphony, instead of a more even 60. It really is a supreme masterpiece of music, one for the ages!
No matter how many times I listen to this masterpiece I remain in awe of the genius of Ludwig Van….
Filmed in 1968. To this day, one of the most phenomenal performances ever recorded. God's preview of Heaven.

Above the starry sky
Über'm Sternenzelt
He must live above the stars
Über Sternen muß er wohnen
Mil gracias por la traducción ❤❤❤
Food for the soul and a salve to the mind. Nothing like classical music and opera nothing.
seriously replayed 6:45 he sings about "Freude" which means "joy" and his constant smirk doing so is just infectious! :D
I love watching his face!
My mind keep inserting in "schadenfreude" for some twisted reason.
@@ms.annthrope415 haha, now I can't unhear it xD
‘smirk’ is defined as ‘smug’ or ‘silly’ or perhaps ‘conceited”…
I would say rather “joyful smile”
This is, to my opinion, the most honest with no exaggeration and clear interpretation of the music. I can repeat listening to this for eternity and don’t get bored..!
Questa è la migliore esecuzione mai registrata. Grazie!
What an absolute pleasure that I was able to stumble upon this beautiful interpretation. Thank you very much.
Such a beautiful masterpiece brings me to tears of pure joy....thank you.
I was wondering why no women in the orchestra. It’s 1968. And saw very little sheet music. Such professionalism, I’m blown away.
Fabulous performance from Von Karajan and the BPO and yet, they didn't ask anyone to buy them a coffee. Thats class!
Oh God what this genius has accomplished, through his music the power of faith sparks within us, this is supposed to be a call to humanity to seek God and to feel him through his creations, oh beethoven even though you were completely deaf when you composed this masterpiece you succeeded to touch the deepest parts of any sensible man.
Profoundly Gorgeous, never heard this version, God Bless you in heaven Ludwig , you have brought heaven to our ears and senses !!!! Thank you, Thank you! Blessings to you for ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤posting this Masterpiece !!!

@@makyhsmakyhs6766 thanks 🙋♀️
best interpretation I've found on youtube.
The most beautiful of melody. Joy to anyone lucky to hear this. Can it be true that Bethoven composed this while deaf? Like described in the comments it is the divine here on earth. Danke Schen to all members of this symphony, singers and maestro conductor. 👏👏👏
Muito bom
He was totally deaf when he composed this.
And Beethoven was totally deaf when he conducted the inaugural public performance.
History records that there was a thunderous reception.
This is like a little insight into Heaven, every tone is full of passion, this is art, Thanks to Conductor Orcester's and, chore passionated dedication!!!
Beethoven's 9th Symphony changed music forever. This is the welcoming of those resurrected mankind on Paradise Earth including Beethoven and all the old masters. Acts 24:15 and Revelation 21:4
An absolutely SPECTACULAR rendition!
You can close your eyes and hear in Stereo, such magnificence and so graceful a Baton. Truly to be remembered.
Maravilloso Betoven
What a marvelous performance! Gorgeous & dramatic camerawork! When & where was this performed? Who are the soloists? I’ve loved this all my life!
In Berlin. Berliner Philharmonic, Herbert von Karajan is the conductor. Sadly, no longer with us.
Greatness.
Well with this performance 3 things come together:
Great composer
Great poet (Schiller)
Great conductor.
They became ONE.
Absolutely right. Greetings from Yorkshire.
How I miss the authentic, heavenly music of the orchestra. This generation has no idea what they are missing.
I am glad to have met you.
Stunning sensational -- way beyond BRILLIANT ---Bravo ,!!!
Thank God for gifting us with such a glorious piece; it really gets to the bottom of my soul & helps my faith in the Almighty. Just came from my Catholic Church so this awesome piece has eternal meaning. I only wish that more of this world would appreciate Beethoven. 🌟🌼🇺🇸✨
Brilliant conductor too
Beautiful music. The voices sound so Angelic. Pure Genius.
Amazing !! I hope my uncle was here and listen that Beethoven..Greetings from Finland.
Great music and cinematography too!
This is the first time I have been able to follow along with the words to the music, beautiful! If possible, the words give the music even more depth of feeling.
')...,.
Magnificent. A timeless joy.
amen
Did you sing in this concert?😮
Is the chorus on the stage for the first three movements, or do they come out for the fourth? If the former, are they seated until the fourth?

Magnificent performance!
una versión majestuosa, que voces, que pasión...
Magnificent performace. Karajan is brilliant 🌹👌
Possibly one of the greatest piece of music written by the greatest composer and performed by the greatest orchestra by the greatest conductor of music.
Karajan, perfeita execução desta Obra Celeste❤
Herbert Von Karajan... Un grande entre los grandes... La Sinfónica, los solistas, el coro... ¡Magnífico!... Grabación de 1968 creo...
simply, divine!
What a riff. Beethoven and Bach - pure metal
I can't remember a production so slick, so simply beautiful. The music is beyond marvellous of course but the direction of this video in all respects, was superb.
Musik und Text wunderschön!
Conductor Herbert von Karajan at Berlin Philharmonic design by Professor Hans Scharun
I am your Brother.
This is beautiful

I am your sister from Australia .. 🤍🕊️✨
The choir's separation and enunciation of each quarter note is top-notch! We did this in my undergrad - we had the vocal forces to do it but I felt the singing was too legato so the listeners couldn't distinguish between the syllables in the "main" (forte/fortissimo) sections.
Einfach Kollosal ❤ an Präzision und Vollkommenheit nicht zu übertreffen ❤ Danke Danke Danke 😊❤
Thank you! Bravissimo! "Spark of the Gods" indeed!
Vielen Dank!Maestro Karajan!
Simply the most sublime pinnacle of classical music.
No doubt very much so
Same here..
