At least, thats my experience watching them. Now combine that with an unknown to most people, underwater exploration, and their is a lot to enjoy :)

    From what I read about this, there were regular attempts to find his body over the next few weeks. They supposedly passed within 120 ft of him but during those searches rescuers couldn’t hear him. He wrote in the sand to his wife and mom that he loved them. So sad.
    I actually think this is more horrifying than the other videos on Dive Talk about divers dying in caves. Even worse than the video about the Dolphin oil explosion. They’re all bad but this guy really suffered. For three weeks he suffered until he starved to death. That must be an awful way to go. So much time to think and agonize over having to leave your family you love.

    • @yamihikarilightdark9

      As gruesome as the dolphin oil explosion was, they must've died instantly, or damn close to it. It's gruesome for the people that found the bodies, but thankfully the victims didn't suffer a long death.

    I want to comment specifically on something Woody said regarding why we don't dive open circuit on a single tank in a cave. He mentioned gas endurance, and while it is true that proper gas management would lead to a very short dive on a single, I just want to point out to the community here that the more important reason for diving doubles in any environment where the surface is unavailable is to have at least two independent first stages so that you can accommodate a regulator failure, similar to why you carry bailout tanks to accommodate a rebreather failure.

    I would have loved to hear about what the procedures are these days when a diver is lost. It doesn't seem like, in a cave that is very possibly full of air pockets, that rescuers would give up and police would block the cave after only a few hours of searching. And even if they were convinced he was dead, I'm sure that they would continue searching for the body. In the Thai cave rescue, the kids and their coach weren't found for over a week after they'd gone missing, and no one gave up. I've seen some of your videos with Edd Sorenson and it can take him a few days to get somewhere, and he still searches. I'm just shocked that they searched for this guy for such a short amount of time and then wouldn't let anyone else in.

Secondly, even if detail based on safe assumptions - for example, an island inside a cave system is almost definitely going to be "rocky [and] sandy" - is added for descriptive and dramatic effect, it doesn't change the story in any meaningful way whatsoever. It's an almost universally deployed device in retelling ANY true story as entertainment ... and sometimes, even in journalistic editorial.

    I don't think it's the rate of cave diving deaths that people worry about so much, as you said, it's rare. I think it's a combination of the fears of being underwater, tight spaces, the dark, drowning and getting stuck that come together to make it a terrifying death.

    I just wanted to thank you guys for adding clarity to cases like this. I do enjoy MrBallen's videos but they had given me a huuuuuuuge paranoia about cave diving and diving in general. I discovered your channel through his and you have made both much less frightening. I still wouldn't go cave diving, simply because I know my limits and how I would react if something started to go wrong (very poorly, I tend to panic), but you and your videos have helped decrease my fear of it by a lot. I remember reading a book on risk by Michael Bane (Over the Edge?) and he mentioned that anyone can call a cave dive if they feel things are getting too unsafe, similar to how anyone on a shooting range can call a ceasefire. Could this cat's buddies have called the dive and sort of forced him to comply?

    • @chuiduma
      @chuiduma 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They could have called it, yeah. Not sure how they could force him to comply, but one of the things you learn in even basic open water courses is that anyone can call a dive. If you're in a group maybe some people ascend while others continue with the dive as planned. But if I'm diving with only one other person and my buddy thumbs it, I'm going back up, no questions asked.

But these were well explored areas and with qualified guides so clearly a very low risk. I also joined a diving club, but after a non related accident I stopped going and so never qualified. Neither of these pastimes scared me, but to combine them just adds so many other potential dangers. And to then explore unknown areas is clearly a task that should only be tried if you take every single precaution possible. But huge respect to you guys who do it for fun. And the reason you are still here to continue that hobby is because you're smart enough to be sensible and make sure you have a back up in case something goes wrong.

They entered an area with a swiss cheese wall, as she was tired she told her friends she would wait if they wanted to explore. The guy went into one tunnel on the left and the girl on a tunnel to the right. Both explorers got lost and asked her to call to them to follow her voice back. She said they both returned but from opposite walls to what they started at, and neither crossed the other. She was really freaked out, but added the cave system is really complex.
    The entire group was told (at the very beginning) not to leave or stray from the group as it is easy to separate and get lost. It is pretty serious. Edit grammar

    Watched that Mr Ballen vid for the first time literally yesterday and genuinely thought, 'I would love to see Dive Talk react to this.'
    Also Woody, you cracked me up with that hat. Keep on being awesome, the pair of you :)

    You 2 guys have the best channel ever in the history of the universe. For real, thank you guys for all the videos and safety information and your reactions.
    Got scuba certified in Fiji on my honey moon. My wife had a 104 degree fever and we were on Vatulele island. I got the nurse and she helped her. I said babe I won’t leave your side for the next 10 days. She said go learn how to dive if I die at least you learn a skill and have something good out of our honeymoon lol.
    I had 11 dives and it was amazing.
    Oh yeah my wife survived too!!

    Love the hat Woody! MR. Ballen is Da Man. All his content is Great. I also, am not a cave diver, however a dry caver. Cavers rely on people like you. Professional cave divers to explore where we can't. The expert cave divers can help exploration, continue to expand and map and give us all a better idea on what to do next. I have met a few cave divers; they are great folk. Would love to see you comment on Snail Shell cave in TN. One of the longest underwater caves in TN. The problem is that I think there is no data (VIDEIO) on this Cave. if you guys get bored and have the time, please check into this. If anything, you will be impressed. Managed by the SSCI. Thanks.

      90% OF BALLEN STORIES ARE FALSE. He just invents the details (fiction). He should do more research to make sure the stories are accurate

    Never come across this channel before and I normally try to avoid videos about caves when they do pop up in my recommended, but that Hat caught my interest in the thumbnail, and so I watched.
    It was a very interesting video, I didn't know most of this stuff about cave diving (i knew about the tanks, but that's more of a thing about diving in general. You always bring a backup tank, or at least have someone nearby with a tank, even if your gonna be connected to a boat by a tube through which air can pass. You may not ever use the tank, but at least you will have it if something didn happen) honestly, makes me less worried about my friends that do wish to go cave diving.

    This is seriously some of the best content I've ever seen. Been binge watching your videos and seriously considering getting into cave diving now!
    Question I had from this video: at 11:27 you explain that you can tell where someone dove because of silt. But didn't you also say multiple times that often there's a current? And I imagine after hours even a weak current could spread the silt in a way that it's equally distributed or maybe even gone at that point. :) Not a criticism, I have no idea, just a question ^^

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some caves have current, that's correct.

    • @MadBinxx
      @MadBinxx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't hours though. They turned around and he was gone. Their advice was for turning around and your guy is gone, where as youre trying to argue about recovery after the fact. Seems like you didn't understand that point.
      Hope you never go cave diving. You obviously think you know more than you do, making suggestions to experienced divers and using passive aggressive emotes to imply you know things.
      But hey, you do understand the ocean has currents. So there's that.
