I remember watching my first MrBallen video (just happened to be about cave diving) and really liked the way he presented himself and the content. Then he started talking about the intricacies of deep diving/& cave diving and i rolled my eyes like yea sure Mr diving expert. Then he casually mentions he's an ex Navy Seal and I was like well that will do it! About as qualified as 99% of the population along with myself who has never scuba dived. Don't judge a book by it's cover and all that.

Woody’s comment, “They don’t know what they don’t know”, is on point, and demonstrates their high level of skill in diving. That’s actually the first stage of competency, unconscious incompetence, in the hierarchy of competence learning model, which describes the psychological states involved in the process of progressing from incompetence to competence in a skill. I’ve used that phrase frequently when discussing medicine and similarly in diving, this is the stage where people and situations are the most dangerous. Love watching you guys, thank you for creating dynamic and engaging content!

After I learned about cognitive biases like the Dunning-Kruger effect, I have been fascinated with theoretical models of learning associated with the administration & management fields. (Been out of school for a while, but I have a B.S. in psych & a B.S. in crim; I think both psych & crim can benefit from economic & business theory and vice versa.) Do you think the Peter Principle can help explain why dive instructors, with no cave diving training, think they are competent enough to enter a cave? I can kinda see how that cognitive bias could result in a diver dismissing the old Grim Reaper warning, especially if they have minimal cave diving experience, leading to greater (but faulty) confidence in one's own ability. And I dig your using learning models in medicine (another field psych & crim can & do learn from).

Its closed because there is a critically endangered fish called "The Devil's Hole Pup Fish" that only lives in the first few feet of water at the opening of Devil's Hole. The population of fish has ranged from 20-200 over the years and is very sensitive to changes in their environment.
Maybe if you did the dive as a "Save the Pupfish" dive and used it to raise awareness of endangered and sensitive ecosystems you could get the park system to go along.

Loved the interview with Jonathan & Mike. Non-diver here, but am a fish keeper. Interesting to hear the divers mention that the water was 92°F. I would imagine the oxygen levels in the water would be lower than normal at those temperatures. There are not a lot of fish that I know of that can live in those temps. Those pup fish have evolved to be able to live in some unusual conditions.

The actual reason it's sealed is much cooler--there is an endemic species of pupfish that only exists in this single 20' x 40' pool in the middle of the desert. The population fluctuates from a few dozen to a few hundred depending on conditions, if I remember right, so any human activity could severely disturb their habitat and potentially wipe them out entirely.

Ugh… worst fear. As a cave diver myself it’s always been that one disturbing fear I have. Diving somewhere we know bodies have been lost but never been found… just the thought of someone dying, and then just in there, in the dark, floating in the water for eternity. And one day when you’re not even expecting it, boom, there they are. Seriously is my worst fear. I used to listen to my parents talk about this stuff when I was little and I would have nightmares about it…. Still do. Gives me the willies!

Since I heard about Devil's Hole, I get the feeling the only way to visit would be to have a very well formulated research proposal. Which I guess could be doable to try and answer some of the mysteries around that system. I read an article about local folklore, where shamans would appear and disappear, apparently travelling via underground waterways. So there seemed to have been local knowledge of a large system there. It's also where I miss having acccess to academic search engines, ie an ability to pull up every previous bit of research around that area.
It would be interesting to have a mapping project, ie ROVs and sonar to map out the upper chamber, and potentially what lies beneath. But I guess that would be expensive, so might take a couple of reasearch teams pooling grants.
I also read that the pup fish are still potentially threatened by falling water levels due to their environment largely being confined to a shallow section near the open entrance. AFAIK there are breeding projects to try to maintain the population, but may not be successful in their original environment, if that changes. Which I guess could be a further incentive to understand the topology and hydrology at play. And then maybe Woody & Gus could tag along as support divers :)

Whenever I think about diving, I remember a moment I had as a kid at summer camp where they used to take us to a pool at a dive center; with us kids swimming at the shallow end around 4-6 feet, with the deep end being used by the dive center for training at 15 feet.
I remember playing with one of those torpedo pool toys with friends underwater one day in the shallow end when someone threw it toward the deep end, so we all decided to try and swim down to get it. I will ALWAYS remember the primal fear I felt when i was almost 10 feet down, as a 4 foot tall kid, having so much water above and below my head. I’ve always wanted to dive, but having that experience spooked me so much as a kid I still get wiggly when I think about diving in huge open areas

I got down pretty far, but scared myself with how long it took me to swim back to the surface -- wonder if that's partially why I'm not a fan of deep water of any kind today or whether it's just an instinctual revulsion.

I got interested in diving by reading Sealab: America's Forgotten Quest to Live and Work on the Ocean Floor

The original Sealab was 1963 and some work into breathing gas at depth had gone on in the years prior. So it's just barely possible a heliox mix or early rebreather would have been available at the time of the Devil's Hole incident, but obviously not to random civilians. I highly recommend the book!
