Apparently large earthquakes in Japan, Indonesia, and Chile have made water slosh in Devils Hole which is just incredible to think about. What an insane thing to have formed somehow. Not only is it somehow connected to South America, it has a connection to East Asia. I can't even begin to fathom it
Poor gus just trying to shut up Woody when he is talking about the hole. I can just feel the second hand embarrassment. 🤣 this video makes my day so much better.
That story is just incredible. The small hole that was discovered at the bottom of devil's hole is called Infinity Room and to make it clear how big the ocean under Infinity Room is, 2000 miles is double the distance from Vienna to Moscow.
It is sealed off because of an endangered fish, walking on the ledge destroys this fish's only habitat these fish are only found in this cave and another a bit farther away. Yea Endangered species act.

I had to stop the video at 2:34 To burst out laughing "Dear Nevada, I want to promote your Hole" That sounded strange 😂 I love your channel by the way, and respect what you do - and I am not laughing when the stories turn tragic. 🌹
Jonathan bird got me into watching dive videos like 5 years ago. He is my freaking favorite. I found dive talk this year and fell in love with the channel. It’s cool to see Jonathan on this episode
Kudos on clearing up the Mr. Ballen confusion. People will jump to conclusions, assume they are right, and tell you that you're a fool without even checking the facts. That's TH-cam for you.
I love woody going on about “promoting and penetrating Nevada hole” I was dying from laughter due to his innocence and ignorance of the double entendre while you kept trying to clue him in rofl. I love your videos and appreciate all you guys do to promote diving and safety.
Ugh… worst fear. As a cave diver myself it’s always been that one disturbing fear I have. Diving somewhere we know bodies have been lost but never been found… just the thought of someone dying, and then just in there, in the dark, floating in the water for eternity. And one day when you’re not even expecting it, boom, there they are. Seriously is my worst fear. I used to listen to my parents talk about this stuff when I was little and I would have nightmares about it…. Still do. Gives me the willies!
just image if that guy really sucked in that hole on bottom off the cave and someday his suit with bones in it will pop out somewhere 2000+ miles away.

The actual reason it's sealed is much cooler--there is an endemic species of pupfish that only exists in this single 20' x 40' pool in the middle of the desert. The population fluctuates from a few dozen to a few hundred depending on conditions, if I remember right, so any human activity could severely disturb their habitat and potentially wipe them out entirely.
came down to comment just that- as I recall they're one of the rarest known vertebrates on the planet! They're also beautiful little fish, especially the bright metallic blue males
Mr Ballen makes up a lot of “facts” in his videos though to make the videos “more interesting”, and intentionally rewrites details, like saying a victim of a home burglary had a _gun_ collection when in fact he had a _guitar_ collection. He is not a reliable source and he spreads a lot of misinformation.
Yay! I love your Mr. BAllen reviews. That's how I found Dive Talk to begin with. If he has kept up on his diving skills, I think you 3 should make an actual dive vid collab. How cool would that be! Just don't give him comms during the dive or he'll either terrify you with the strange, dark, and mysterious delivered in story format, or else his smooth storytelling voice will hypnotize you like a siren's call lol. I’m extremely thankful to have found this channel before I started learning SCUBA. The more I learn, the more humbling it is. I can definitely see how some people dive and don’t follow your channel, during lessons when learning about what can go wrong, could think, “that won’t ever happen to me.” That’s the attitude that leads to it happening to ‘em! Woody, may you one day be able to deeply penetrate this hole!
Since I heard about Devil's Hole, I get the feeling the only way to visit would be to have a very well formulated research proposal. Which I guess could be doable to try and answer some of the mysteries around that system. I read an article about local folklore, where shamans would appear and disappear, apparently travelling via underground waterways. So there seemed to have been local knowledge of a large system there. It's also where I miss having acccess to academic search engines, ie an ability to pull up every previous bit of research around that area. It would be interesting to have a mapping project, ie ROVs and sonar to map out the upper chamber, and potentially what lies beneath. But I guess that would be expensive, so might take a couple of reasearch teams pooling grants. I also read that the pup fish are still potentially threatened by falling water levels due to their environment largely being confined to a shallow section near the open entrance. AFAIK there are breeding projects to try to maintain the population, but may not be successful in their original environment, if that changes. Which I guess could be a further incentive to understand the topology and hydrology at play. And then maybe Woody & Gus could tag along as support divers :)
19:39 that's incredible to think that this small hole may lead to a gigantic underground ocean.... if that is the case, then its likely that tidal forces would cause the hole to either suck water in or push water out depending on whether its high tide or low tide... but not only that, imagine all the undiscovered life forms that may exist in there - especially if it's a closed system.
That's terrifying to be honest. There _has_ to be life down there because the pupfish. There is an ocean underground. Under the driest places on the planet. Scary.
That’s actually a cool thought, if the direction of the hole does switch depending on high tide or low tide, could you theoretically plan an expedition in?
You mean to tell me there's a chance that that nasty titan centipede from AOT really may be lurking around in underground water down there?🤢🤮 Nope nope nope nope!! Noo thank you. Leave it where it's at x.x
@@sissysovereign1294 I'd imagine at that depth it'll be hard for anything to live down there. Even in the deepest parts of our oceans at the veeeery bottom there isn't much but decayed carcasses and things that eat that decayed stuff like Sea Pigs and Hagfish. Sadly, I don't think we'll see a Ghost Leviathan from Subnautica in it.... that being said we just don't know yet!

Whenever I think about diving, I remember a moment I had as a kid at summer camp where they used to take us to a pool at a dive center; with us kids swimming at the shallow end around 4-6 feet, with the deep end being used by the dive center for training at 15 feet. I remember playing with one of those torpedo pool toys with friends underwater one day in the shallow end when someone threw it toward the deep end, so we all decided to try and swim down to get it. I will ALWAYS remember the primal fear I felt when i was almost 10 feet down, as a 4 foot tall kid, having so much water above and below my head. I’ve always wanted to dive, but having that experience spooked me so much as a kid I still get wiggly when I think about diving in huge open areas
When I was growing up my neighborhood pool was 15 feet deep. They took down the tall diving board before I was born, but as a kid I always wanted to reach the bottom of the 15 foot side. I got down pretty far, but scared myself with how long it took me to swim back to the surface -- wonder if that's partially why I'm not a fan of deep water of any kind today or whether it's just an instinctual revulsion.
I have never dived in my life nor I intend to do so (but who knows, never say never). Anyway, I can’t stop watching your vids! Thank you for your work and for being yourselves!
You fellas are amazing! I have a little too much respect for the water, as in I don't feel right when surrounded by it in a large body. Your videos make me want to overcome my fears and try some diving. Thank you for sharing your love of diving. It gives me more wonder than fear of what's down there.
Ya Mr Ballen is such a great story teller. When I got a notification for a new video of his I go outa my way to find somewhere to lay down close my eyes and just listen and see the story play out in my mind.
I suck at basic swimming but find watching your channel fascinating and love your compassion and humanity when dealing with a difficult subject. I avoid caves let alone subterranean ones filled with water.
Young people do things like this due to what’s known as a personal fable. They are far from death due to their age so don’t think they will die basically (it’s not on their mind and if it enters their mind they don’t think it will happen to them). That’s putting it pretty simplistically but that’s the gist. As we age caution increases (usually) because we begin to feel our mortality. Very sad these young people died. Great show as always.
The pubfish! I was waiting for them to come up! Id heard them being a critically endangered species was the main reason the govnt is so protective of their environment (I could be wrong because not everything you read online is true). It made sense to me with how sensitive that species is. Im imagining that's why the park svc has all those special procedures with the gear? Making sure nothing from outside gets introduced into the pubfishs world... (me making assumptions) I cant wait til you do a colab with mrb! I think it would be amazing for both channels!

So there are fresh water oceans under the desert and we depend on the Colorado river for water?
@@will.green. What?
@@SKRATCH1988It is likely not continuous open water, but a few large caverns connected by numerous small seams in the rock and huge portions of saturated soil.
Woody should play the “oblivious” act more often . . . It’s so funny when he gets into that mode. Does it with Aliens too. Lol Hilarious.
(Just to be clear, not calling him dumb, not in the least bit)
I like the oblivious woody too XD
@@GrifoStelle OBLIVIOUS! Yessss! That’s the word I was looking for, dumb didn’t quite fit but I knew people would know what I was talking about. But Oblivious is the word I should have used, actually gonna edit that now. Thank you.
What do you mean? Aliens are real. Everyone knows it.
Woody is the male version of Golden Girl Rose.
Not sure how I ended up on DiveTube, but I'm definitely enjoying the videos - perhaps it's morbid curiosity. My fear of drowning combined with claustrophobia had me "noping" throughout the story, but it is entertaining to learn about.
Same here! I've never been diving, have absolutely no interest whatsoever in going diving I don't like swimming in the ocean but I love these videos. I'll live vicariously through everyone else lol but I do love these videos and like learning about it
Yup. Me too. The guys have said before that most of their subscribers are not divers.
I am exactly the same. I also hate horror movies normally. So this is a kind of replacement for it, at least for me^^
3:04: Woody keeping a straight face here is legendary.
I agree with Woody, MrBallen describes things in a way that you can picture yourself in the situations that he's describing. I'm really glad that you're covering these stories!
Yes! Mr. B is the Michaelangelo of painting mental pictures!
I had to stop the video at 2:34
To burst out laughing
"Dear Nevada, I want to promote your Hole"
That sounded strange 😂
I love your channel by the way, and respect what you do - and I am not laughing when the stories turn tragic.
@@will.green.But they do though, sir. All the time.
Omg. I don't know how Woody managed to say that over and over with a straight face. You two have the best dynamic ever. It's awesome to watch.
I love woody going on about “promoting and penetrating Nevada hole” I was dying from laughter due to his innocence and ignorance of the double entendre while you kept trying to clue him in rofl. I love your videos and appreciate all you guys do to promote diving and safety.
He understood the double entendre perfectly, it was a joke with a deadpan expression
"dear Nevada, this is dive talk Woody, and i wanna promote your hole" 😂🤣" I wanna promote your hole, and we'll be respectful and we wanna penetrate the deeper levels of the hole" Woody and Gus have such great subtle humor in their videos, love it! Keep it up!
They need consent in writing before penetration. These guys are proper gentleman 😂😂😂
Came here from MrBallen and now I’m hooked!! You guys are so awesome and I have so much respect for what you do and the educational information you provide! Keep it up!
"I want to promote your hole...." 😂😂😂😂
This has to be my favourite channel. I don't even dive but Woody and Gus really got me wanting to take classes! Keep up the amazing work guys!!! 👏
If Mike Young and Ed Sorensen just had a whole series where they just tell stories from the past in great detail showing a few pictures (even if some are from online but relevant), I'd watch every one of them.
Yes! I’d pay to listen to that. Both of them fascinate me and I can only the imagine the depth (no pun intended lol) of the stories they could tell!
@@stephnicole3078 Me too! I love hearing anyone very technical just talk in great detail about things they have done
@@nk361 I feel very much the same! Especially when it’s something they’re passionate about. Most of the time I don’t even have to care much about the topic.
Both Edd and Mike's voices are like ASMR for me. They're great storytellers!
I discovered these video's through mrballen! I will never do what you guys do but I admire that divers and cave divers are some of the last pioneers in exploration. Mad respect!
Why is woody so funny 🤣🤣 "I want to penatrate your hole, if anyone's listening" "they stopped listening when you started saying you wanted to penatrate their hole" love your videos guys, brilliant duo, love how your personalities gel together.
And document it. Lol.
"They exited the video" 🤣
😂😂😂😂
The actual reason it's sealed is much cooler--there is an endemic species of pupfish that only exists in this single 20' x 40' pool in the middle of the desert. The population fluctuates from a few dozen to a few hundred depending on conditions, if I remember right, so any human activity could severely disturb their habitat and potentially wipe them out entirely.
I went to fact check you on google and ended up going down a Devils Hole Pupfish rabbit hole. Legitimately amazing, thank you!
Lol, I just commented this before seeing someone else had already :D
Well said!
came down to comment just that- as I recall they're one of the rarest known vertebrates on the planet! They're also beautiful little fish, especially the bright metallic blue males
Cool information. Thank you.
Mr Ballen is a legend!! His storytelling is one of the best to find on the platform! Amazing dude, with amazing content! This is a good good collab!
Yep, I agree, just sad that he just sold out to Amazon.
He’s a legend?? 😂 not quite bud. He tells stories on TH-cam of what other people did, well short of a “legend”
@@roycemartin9068 and he's a. Navy seal something your not
Mr Ballen makes up a lot of “facts” in his videos though to make the videos “more interesting”, and intentionally rewrites details, like saying a victim of a home burglary had a _gun_ collection when in fact he had a _guitar_ collection.
Have a great week gentlemen! Much love your way
P.S.- Should we gently strand your like button in an air pocket with no equipment but a knife? 😂😂💀
Please do! But push it first.
@@DIVETALK already done my friends!

@@lyndiwilson2334 Glad *you* got it. At first read, I thought they meant to push the *knife*! Since Woody and Gus seem like pretty reasonable guys, that response struck me as a bit harsh. Not until reading your response, did I see the error of my ways. A moment of d'oh!
@@grievouserror your initial interpretation is cracking me up!
You guys have a strangely entertaining chemistry. Love it.
I adore you two! You guys are the most levelheaded, normal, and all around good guys on TH-cam! Hands down.
Man, I say this every time but this is phenomenal content from you guys. It's always a joy to see you cover MrBallen's videos and I can't believe you went the extra mile to get a zoom call with people who have actually been there. Amazing work!
Amazing! Both Jonathan Bird and Mike Young?! You guys are just killing it.
I was crying with the "hole" jokes at the beginning
Mr.Ballen is my favorite story teller of all time. I absolutely love that you guys are fact checking his very believable and mostly honest stories. I'd certainly love to see a calibration between the 3 of you. If you can convince JB to go on a dive trip with ya's, id love to be invited.
I'm sick of the backwards cap and the flannel shirt, and therconstant mis-pronunciation of sites, but I used to watch his stuff--
I’m extremely thankful to have found this channel before I started learning SCUBA.
I’ve been hooked on Mr Ballen for about a year now.. watched every video and hang out each week for the new one.. such a great story teller!!
Mike remains so calmed , cool and collected , not interrupting anyone .... he is just awesome . There's so much knowledge and experience in this guy .
it is fascinating to hear MrBallen tell the story and have your expert input. That is amazing.
Love how Ballen tells stories... Its so east to visualize it the way he tells it...
Bro sux a dix. Be different. You know what you did...

I am not a diver and ran across a cave diving video and actually fell in love with you guys and the way you explain things. Your friendship is inspiring and It makes me wish I could go dive with you both, either that or just hang out and talk. I am to old now to start learning how to dive but I would hope if any of my boys wanted to get certified that it would be with either of you or teachers like you. I was in Fiji about 20yrs ago and we ended up on a boat tour where they were letting people get geared up and go scuba diving with NO EXPERIENCE or previous experience. As much as I wanted to go I didn't do it and now watching your videos I'm glad I didn't do it.
Woody I love all your Pink!! Pink is my color and I wear it all the time. You killed me with your intro..... Dear Nevada, we want to promote your hole, we want to penetrate your hole. I laughed so hard because you were saying it with a straight face never cracking a smile and Gus just shaking his head and trying to get you to be quiet. Love you guys and stay safe.
I would love to see that collaboration! This was great because it wasn’t just the reaction, really cool to hear from the actual divers and find out how stuff was done.
Thank you!
I never expected to see something so strange, dark, and mysterious delivered in such a story format on this channel
Woodys sense of humor is actually so funny for someone his age. i find a big disconnect between generations, especially in modern America, but as a young viewer Woody is great. again, and as always, luv ya guys
Indeed, Woody is peak comedian at times. 😂
Lol I never laughed so hard ... You guys are hilarious . Well done guys! I love the the back and forth between innocent Woody and Gus who says: please consider how you phrase things! I am not a diver but I feel like a part of your Dive Talk community! My six year olds class watches Blue World in class to learn about the underwater environments and animals.
My wish is that divers could take a some sort of submersible vehicle with a camera and light to go through that hole at the bottom just to see what is down there! Thank you as always for another fun and informative video!
I came across you guys on my YT feed reacting to a Mr Ballen video and I was hooked! I don’t dive but I watch your videos because I love the banter between you two! And also Woody’s headgear! Your stories are interesting and informative. Great channel!

I've only been watching your vids for a couple weeks and I'm binging my way through them. This is one of my favorites because you can hear from the guys who actually worked in this area. I'm amazed that you guys didn't put in the title that you were going to interview these two. It kind of came out of nowhere.
This is the pup fish hole right? It's sealed because there's a VERY endangered species in it and people keep further ruining their habitat. The channel "Ask a mortician" has a very in depth video on this subject if anyone's interested!

Woody was so innocent, saying “I want to promote your hole.” God bless your passionate heart ❤
You guys are great! Honesty Mr.Ballen got me into you guys with the last video. Love all the dive content. Great stuff
The needless loss of life can only be described as tragic.

(me making assumptions)
I cant wait til you do a colab with mrb! I think it would be amazing for both channels!
