I'd love to see you guys collab together in real life or over skype- maybe talk about your military dive training and what's the same/different than the diving these guys do?
Soo.. when will we get the collab cave dive? Even if that doesn't happen, I think it's been a great 'accidental' collaboration where you highlight the risks of cave diving, and Woody & Gus explain exactly why, and how some of these accidents could have been prevented. Personally, I'd 'nope' out of Eagle's Nest, especially the new entrance. Then again, I suspect if I lived in Florida, I'd probably have finished my cave diving training. Florida's geology and hydrology is fascinating, and there's probably still a lot of undiscovered dry & wet caves.
As a father who was certified when I was 15 years old, became an instructor just to teach my son properly, this is the most reckless dive trip ever. He had no business taking that kid on any dive.
As someone who spins yarn, knits, crochets and weaves I absolutely love that Woody has his under the sea creature hats! Makes me smile and Gus shaking his head trying to hold a straight face is priceless!
Same here!! As a fiber artist, my brain immediately goes to "how can I make this awesomeness?!?" Lol. I can't stop smiling over these ocean creatures hats❤️
This just seems so reckless. My dad is a master commercial diver, he always taught me plan your dive around the person in your group with the least experience. When I was a teenager as excited dad was for me to get into diving, he always planned our dives around my skill level.
@@Missstrish same!! People speaking ill of the dead like this really should not be so cruel. Was it a bad decision? Yes it was. Can divers of all experience levels learn from this mistake? Absolutely. But nobody should speak so harshly about these people... ❤️🙏
“more people die in car accidents” FALSE. FOR EVERY 4000 cave dives, there will be one death. For cars you have to do 3 million trips for each death. Cars are waaaaaaaaay safer .
@@BackyardButcher Most who are being blunt aren’t doing so to be cruel. It’s purely because it’s a horrifying tragedy, depressing as hell and it’s scary often trying to imagine putting their own in the same situation.
Woody was so happy at the very beginning of this video -- it was heartbreaking to watch his face fall when Gus mentioned the topic they'd be discussing for this video.
i really appreciate that u guys discuss these stories with respect for the deceased. *everyone* has made a reckless or uneducated decision at some point in their life, and many of us are lucky to still be here in spite of it. the less fortunate don't need to be mocked for it.
No, fools need to be mocked, so that future lives can be saved. Children especially need to know that a fool did a foolish thing -- they need to be taught, "Don't be a fool...Don't be like this fool or this will happen to you." It is _much_ more important to prevent the preventable injury or death of countless people than to spare the feelings of a few. Further, of course I've done reckless things -- as a kid and a teen. But not as a middle-aged adult, and not as a father.
They point out the mistakes to learn from them to protect those that are still learning. Constructively pointing out actions as foolish is fine, but mockery and harsh treatment for people that died, even if it was their own fault, shouldn’t be the way channels like this teach others.
@@yamihikarilightdark9 The point that I'm trying to make is that it is not acceptable to treat a foolish action as "just an accident". As "something that could happen to anyone". To go to pains to pretend that the person who caused the incident --- who hurt or killed himself and/or others --- did nothing wrong. That's not what's happening in this video, but it's very common in the media, especially when it involves a member of one the Protected groups that we're not supposed to speak ill of.
My 4 year old son recognizes Mr. Ballen (by face only, he’s not ready to actually listen to the strange, dark, and mysterious) because I watch him so often, but today, he saw this video and also said “oh, it’s Gus and Woody!” 😆😃 he sends his compliments to Woody’s hat.😂
Give him a chance. I watched the original 1978 John Carpenter's "Halloween" when I was 4. I've been a fan of horror movies and the strange, dark, and mysterious ever since. lol So he'll be just fine.
“more people die in car accidents” FALSE. FOR EVERY 4000 cave dives, there will be one death. For cars you have to do 3 million trips for each death. Cars are waaaaaaaaay safer .
That dark stuff is ok sometimes imo-as long as it is presented in a format that isn't "tasteless" at all. Being exposed to _some_ small amount of these realities-presented in this way at least-will only ground and mature a child. IMO, however you can judge what's ok for a kid under 5 by one rule: Is it controversial at all-by any group, anywhere, in any way _for more than just children?_ (I'm using the term "controversial" more heavily than you normally would be.) ...this conveniently excludes all horror movies, since alot of "extremist" churches will consider it devil-influenced or whatever--which is works fine because horror is unrealistic and therefor pointless for a child _at best._ It excludes anything _at all_ sexual as well since some stricter groups of people consider even the most minor public expressions of sexuality to be inappropriate. It excludes everything political. Even things like just regular old TV would be banned by this rule since alot of people consider "TV" -as in broadcast/cable to be "bad for you". It also excludes social media, etc...lots of things. ...one thing this rule *_does not_* include is *_once in a while_* hearing or seeing a hard-learned, and even tragic story, told by someone who you believe is truthful, rspects everyone involved, and is accurate in their research and therefore what they teach you. ...now this rule still provides a limit as well, since many people would consider an adult watching enough of *anything* to even slightly influence his/her personality to be very bad, this puts a pretty strict limit on how often you want a kid to watch any one thing, even if you do allow it. Because, however this is something that could sit with him for a couple days if it's emotionally heavy enough, it would be something he should only watch *with you,* so you can manage how he reacts to it until he's like 6 or 7 imo. (One thing you might even find is that the kid doesn't seem bothered _enough_ by the dark material, and you'll find yourself teaching him lessons in respect instead lol)
So sorry to hear about that little man passing away due to his father's bad decision. Heartbreaking. Sorry to the family for your loss. Thanks to both of you and Mr.B for spreading awareness.
I can't believe anyone would even consider diving there without proper cave training, let alone bring your son there who isn't even certified to dive open water recreationally. That just blows my mind. That poor kid didn't even want to go to begin with, but he trusted his dad and his dad let him down, and they both lost their lives because of the fathers poor choices. So sad, what a needless tragedy.
“I SAW IT ON TV” made the dad think it would be easy. As for the child, he is not the first kid killed by parental stupidity. (Think of kids that died due to anti-vaxxers.) I feel sorry the child who is a victim of bad parenting .
@@TrappedinSLC You're correct, it wasn't the first time and not only did the father fail their child but so did the mom since she was well aware they'd been to this notoriously dangerous site on numerous occasions and did nothing to ever stop it. Even the father's friend and rescue diver knew how irresponsible this man was because he told him he'd end up coming in to get him one day. He stood true to his word. The worst part about it is the only one who didn't have any say in it was the minor child who was the only one who showed concern since he didn't want to do it in the first place.
@@electrictroy2010 You're going to have to cite the source of your claims any child has died as a result of parents refusing their child be vaccinated.
@@isabellind1292 You don't need special sources for that. Guess why vaccinations got invented. Because hundreds of thousands adults and kids died without them.
Because of 2 individuals untrained in cave diving dying in a cave I have dived in, I am finding it very difficult to get back in that cave. Also how terrible it must be for the family's of these 2 people. You guys nailed it!
You guys and Mr.Ballen should do a interview where he talks about his navy seal dive experience and stuff it would be amazing to see you guys collab together!!!!!!!
Here from MrBallen's channel. His diving stories always scare tf out of me as he's such an amazing story teller, I can picture all of it in my mind. The diving stories are probably the most anxiety-inducing tales. What about the story of the people who hadn't ever mapped the tunnels under a lake, but one day they allowed divers to open the gate and go down. A diver ended up drowning after he panic squeezed through a small opening and lost his sense of direction once he got into the big opening with lots of other tunnels. I recall they closed it back up, and it's still unmapped.
I don't know if you ever found the video, but they've already covered the story you're talking about! They actually have the surviving diver on to tell the story himself, which is great because it seems like the info that MrBallen was working from was inaccurate. It's a harrowing story but Mike tells it very well and he has a lot of great information about the type of exploratory diving he was doing in that cave. The video's called "Divers React to Mr.Ballen's Claustrophobic Horror Story" if you want to search it up!
I remember this one from MrBallen’s channel. The diving stories always freaked me out but after you guys did your first reaction to one of John’s stories, I stuck around your channel. Now I feel more educated and less afraid of the whole idea of diving.
The diving videos are really scary for me. One mistake can be critical. I imagine it’s an amazing thing to do but I’m not brave enough. I hope amateur divers take the time to get experience safely.
Same. I won't even go into deep water on Mario but now I think I MIGHT get dive certified some day... maybe even cave certified. WHAT HAVE WOODY AND GUS DONE TO ME 😭🤣
As a caver myself, Caving/Cave Diving stories of “places you can’t go, but go anyway” always make my heart pound. Ballen is ruthless in his storytelling. Losing light is one thing. Losing air and being crushed by water pressure is a whole other animal. Nope. Edit: The rescue efforts can and do put first responders in danger too. So yes, we care.
And in addition to the danger, the trauma they must have from recovering the bodies. And the poor families. I mean it's just a horrible, callous, gross thing to say.
@@pattywieder3268 I guess he’s emphasising the point of how dangerous this dive and cave diving is if you are unprepared. For me cave diving just doesn’t interest me me because of its risks and the thoughts of serious problems that the environment poses the thought of squeezing through constricted passages is a huge turnoff.
It makes me furious this guy brought his child into this situation. If you have kids not only is it irresponsible in the extreme to even do this alone, bringing your kid down there is just insanity.
Well....If you consider calling this father as the worst dad ever as being cruel....then I'm cruel....because I'm just to pissed off with this dumbass man that killed his son because of his irresponsability.
I agree. Who in their right mind as a parent would endanger their child like this without at the very least doing their homework? Someone should have hit this dad with a rolled up newspaper or squirt him spray bottle like a disobedient cat as they walked towards the pond.
I feel so bad for the kid and his family. It must be so complicated to grieve the fathers death since he was also responsible for the death of the son. And to lose two family members at the same time? Terrible 😢
I think people also miss that the intent of these videos isn't to ridicule the victims of tragic circumstances, be at their own fault or not, but that y'all are here to help teach the respect and love for cave diving and the gravity of its environment and training from (sometimes unfortunate) examples to learn from, which is what I love about your show. I hope those "Darwin award" commentors learn to be more empathetic and respectful, and your response to that at the end was very important for people to hear and hopefully listen to.
It’s hard to feel compassion for divers that are stupid. The other day I almost hit a pedestrian who suddenly walked across an interstate! I thought “If that guy died, it’s because he was stupid.”
“A Rastafarian jellyfish” -Gus I’m soooooo weak!!! Woody you rock the hats!! Much love to you both!! I’m terrified of the ocean but you two make the best content!!
Ive watched Mr. B for a long while. I listen to his podcast. I found you guys through him. I love to watch you guys review his work, even if Ive seen it a dozen times. Great channel Gus n Woody. Thanks
Not only is your channel so entertaining to binge, it’s also educational and I love the awareness you’re spreading regarding the importance of training. I also love that you don’t go on the “this is the most dangerous thing in the world” path, but instead say “get your training, get certified and enjoy our hobby and lifestyle”.
nice to see you guys commenting on mrBallen. it's actually due to his stories about diving that i started researching diving and got into it. 1* CMAS diver now, and that all started with mrBallen's diving stories, which lead me to researching diving more (and getting interested in it) and that eventually lead me here. this vid is proof that we've gone full circle xP
@@Izaz-ke7dt weirdly... Thats exactly what happened xP I was following the mrBallen stories and he sometimes uses such pretty pictures when talking about the diving stories. And it was mostly those that caught my attention. So i investigated diving a bit, and i'm now a certified diver :p So yeah... I basically started diving because some dude on youtube was using fancy diving pictures while talking about how people died during diving.... But honestly, it's an awesome sport to do, it's so calming and really awesome to see the life underwater etc. Like, 90% of the peeps around you will never see those sights, yet when you start diving, you'll be able to see all of it. Sorry for the long post, but diving is like drugs. Once you get started, you either instantly know it aint your thing, or you're hooked for life :p
Life is the most precious thing we have- as a “retired” medic I salute you both because this content educates people and prevents harm. You are doing some of the most important work I believe people can do in life. ❤❤❤
I just recently found you guys channel and I have been watching NON STOP. I'm not even a diver but you guys are so passionate and informative it makes me want to try it one day.
Same here! I straight up can't afford to dive or try it right now, but one day I want to after seeing this channel. It always scared me before, but now it scares me and I want to do it. ;)
Former Marine, never gotten into diving. I fancy it but it’s simply not my pass time. I’m more of a thru-hiker. Im a concept artist and have been watching your videos passively…learned a LOT just listening. One thing that jumps out to me as a stupid question to ask in ANYTHING, not just in diving, is “Why do you care?” As a general rule, I try to stay away from ANYONE that can’t answer that question themselves. They will usually attract trouble.
"As a general rule, I try to stay away from ANYONE that can’t answer that question themselves. They will usually attract trouble." They make life tougher for the rest of us. Plus such deaths are so damn unnecessary.
Hiking. What you think about the creatures that live in yellowstone or Appalachian Mountains?? Should a group of hunters or marines go into those woods to hunt down those creatures??
It breaks your heart because those are two of the most hopeless moments I can imagine. As a father knowing my decision killed my son. Or as a son watching my father die and not knowing what I'm even doing. I feel so terrible for these two and their families. After such an awful and terrifying end I truly hope they are resting in peace.
I love to see experts in their field react to Mr Ballens vids. Makes me realise how much work he puts into getting accurate info and realise that he isn’t exaggerating.
Gus, trying to mock Woody's hat: "You look like Elton John!" Woody: "Why, thank you, I'm a big fan of the guy!" Keep trying, Gus. I'm sure you'll get there eventually. :) As for the video, I've watched this channel long enough to at least know that diving into a cave without certification, and without proper equipment, is a recipe for disaster. Sadly, it cost them their lives, and there will probably be more, simply because some humans don't always think straight and love taking risks.
I love Mr.Ballen! He is one of the best narrators I have ever heard. He is very informative and he has a great way of telling people's stories. Great video! Thanks guys!
This is why I love the internet. I am a non-diving German. Without the Internet I would have never found you. You guys should react oder at least watch the Making of the Abyss. I really think you would enjoy it. Greetings from good ol Germany :-D
This channel is equivalent to me watching rescue 911 as a kid. Countless times has that knowledge gained saved lives. Your channel is also saving lives! I'll never cave dive because I'm to scared. I'm fascinated with the stories. Started listening to Ed Sorenson talk about his rescues and recoveries. Been here every since.
Another form of awareness this promotes is people 'treating' less experienced divers to places like Eagle's Nest. "Oooh, my son is learning to dive, let's take him here!" That's like "My 16 year old is learning to drive, let's let him race this weekend."
@@electrictroy2010 You’re missing the point here. Those kids are not thrown into Indy or stock cars, they start out in go-karts with a max speed of like 25. So compare this to putting a 16 yr old at Daytona.
Nooooo watch Nascar rookie series. The teens are driving cars capable of 160 miles an hour. So your original post “16 year olds don’t race” is negated . .
Thanks guys, I appreciate your compassion - I am far too claustrophobic to attempt any such activity, but I understand that well trained divers can enjoy it. I also like seeing videos where people are safely exploring . This story was so tragic, I hope releasing it serves to warn those who may be tempted to be over confident.
I don’t know how I got hooked on cave diving stories. But for the last few weeks I have been binge watching all your videos . They are extremely informative and very interesting. I would never ever cave dive because of my anxiety and panic disorder but really enjoy all the stories. Thank you so much for these videos!!
Boy how many warning signals did this man disregard, why do we care, to learn from the mistakes, and most of the times it's bad training...great vid guys
Omg again i adore you two! I feel like your my friends hahaha. I get so happy when a new video comes out. I know nothing about diving but I am learning. Keep on keeping on you two ! Your great 😊
Disclaimer: I don't dive...as a matter of fact, at 66, I'm happy to jump in a bath...But anyhow, just wanted to say thank you for your episodes! They're fabulous! And thank you for bringing Mr. BAllen's storytelling to me! I had never heard of him and am now a fan of his, too!
Thank you for caring for people who made a mistake and lost their lives, I can tell this dad wa sso enthusiastic it went over his head. I feel very sad for all involved.
Thank you for caring for human life, and sharing your expertise and knowledge. Hopefully anyone that wants to take any crazy risks, see your videos and this makes them stop and think twice before doing anything that could potentially put their lives at risk or kill them, that they are not experienced to do. So sad that father and son died this way, when it was totally preventable. Stay safe guys 🤿🤿
I remember hearing about this story right while I was binging everything about cave diving (there's just something fascinating about it!) even though I don't think I'll ever dive deeper than 80 ft in open water anyway. I already heard of Eagles Nest being the "Mount Everest" of cave diving and it was stunning to hear how the guy just took his son down this cave. So stunning that I just had to dig into the news some more. It turns out that he had actually been warned about the dangers by someone close to him! I've read some articles about the deaths and one of 'em said the dad KNEW an actual cave diver (Robert Brooks) and Brooks had warned him that he was taking too much risks. The same article also says that both father and son had actually "dived at Eagle's Nest several times", with the father promising Brooks that they were just gonna stay in the Ballroom and they even had spare tanks at the debris mound. I'm guessing that, over the multiple trips they must've done, father & son had become so complacent (no second cylinder on hand) and so overconfident (obviously went beyond the ballroom) that the risks they were taking finally caught up to them. I wouldn't be surprised if being cave-certified wouldn't have made a difference in this case, because people like that could very easily go "well, we've been diving this cave many times, so even if I'm certified I don't need to follow the rule of thirds and prep all these redundant things I'm not gonna need for sure". I know open water divers like that too; I've a godfather who's a PADI course director and I've heard stories of some of the stupid shit he's done but lived to tell the tale over beer. One of them involved going down 230 ft in a blue water dive on a single cylinder of regular air, and playing around with his buddy next to a group of larger-than-human sized fish. Certification means nothing if a person falls for their own hubris.
Thanks forgot posting that, i had a feeling it was something like that. Idk why but just seeing the picture and the early part of the video was enough for me to know what type of father it was; one way too confident in his own bullshit. The suburbs are literally filled with them. Kids just pretending to be adults, playing house and shit.
The child is not the first kid killed by parental stupidity. Think of kids that died due to anti-vaxxers. I feel sorry for the child who is a victim of bad parenting .
Found you guys through @MrBallen and what y'all literally terrifies me to my core. But as a geologist who loves caves you get to see some of the most beautiful places that I never could. Mad respect for you cave divers. Immediate subscribe from me.
I’m sorry if this sounds too harsh, it really pisses me off at the dad. He was completely irresponsible with not only his life, but also his son’s life.
Sad when a father and son die so tragically together. I’m an experienced diver as well as an instructor. I swear-there’s one in every crowd that thinks they can do what no one before them has been able to do. It’s sad. And, as a nurse as well, it’s all so senseless 💔
This has been documented by naturalists too. Some monkeys take high risks, like jumping from tree to tree without caution. Then they miss & fall & die.
I understand having a strong sense of adventure but I wouldn't do this even if I was certified. The strong fear of something staring back at me keeps my ass out of the water
not the first kid killed by parental stupidity. Think of kids that died due to anti-vaxxers. I feel sorry for the child who is a victim of bad parenting .
Thanks for reacting to this story. I remember it from years ago and was always saddened by it. As an Advanced OW diver, I’m trying to convince my two teenage sons to take up the sport; however, the story above keeps me grounded to the dangers of being an irresponsible father, no disrespect intended to the father in the story.
That father deserves all the disrespect we can give to him. It was ALL his fault! And you don't need to be a lot smart to know that this idea was dumb as hell.
As always, I love Woody's hat! This was definitely a sad one 😞 it blows my mind how people can casually walk/swim past all the warning signs. It seems to be a common thread in a lot of these stories. I'm never going to be a diver but you guys are definitely teaching me to appreciate/respect the skills needed to properly cave dive
We are exposed to too many warning signs. Like “smoking is hazardous” and “this item has carcinogens” and “your car battery may explode” and so on. It has the opposite affect of teaching people to ignore the warnings,
This is awesome. I randomly found you guys a couple months ago, but I've been a huge fan of Mrballen for years now. So cool you guys stumbled on him. Great story teller.
Gus saying Woody looks like a Rastafarian made me crack up! 😂 perfect bit of humor to offset the sad story they’d be reacting to. You guys are awesome as usual!
Good point about why you care if people die. I'm a horseback rider and instructor. It's been proven over and over again that helmets save lives. So I'm a huge advocate for helmet safety education. Yet we still get people saying "why do you care if I want to take the risk of not wearing a helmet?". First of all, have you ever met anyone who has had a serious brain injury? If you don't die from cracking your head you can end up being disabled for the rest of your life. Is it really worth it when you can easily protect yourself? There's a saying "if you think your hairstyle is more important than your brain, you're probably right". But I want everyone to enjoy the sport safely and responsibly. No one should die unnecessarily.
You said everything so perfectly. I was about to say the same things lol. Id not be an open water diver if not for you guys. I want sooo badly to go into caves and see that beauty, but I wont do it until I know how to. Its totally different than open water. This story always got to me- the poor kid told his grandmother (his legal guardian he lived with) that morning he didn't think it was a good idea, but he didn't want to disappoint his father).
Cave diving sounds awesome. I have a few years, and few hundred dives under my belt, and even I have a ways to go before cave-diving. I'm sure we'll both get there eventually; all things in due time!
Heartbreaking story. I watched it originally on MrBallens channel. You all spoke well. More importantly. You both handled the story with empathy, and made it a hard lesson learned for anyone considering going into a cave without the proper training, experience and knowledge needed to prevent horrible cases like this. Well done guys. Stay safe. 💙
I see your videos as learning tool of what NOT to do. I'm hoping someone inexperienced will see these videos and think twice before doing something foolish. I'm a non-diver, but love your videos.
I'm not a diver. Your video came across my feed for some algorithmic reason. I thoroughly enjoyed it and appreciate your empathy at the end. What a horrific story of tragic stupidity. New subscriber even though I don't dive and have never really had any interest in it.
I love this kind of content, i've been in dodgy situations where I have had the option to do something out of my ability and this kind of thing helps me to say no. On the first open water dive of my Open Water cert, a guy diving off the same boat (recreational diver, not part of the course) passed away due to a heart attack. Half the boat was really blasé and said they wanted to get back in the water and enjoy their holiday, but I, along with the other half of the boat, didn't feel that was at all appropriate. It gave me a healthy dose of caution that many of my buddies just don't have because they don't SEE the worst case scenario. Please keep up the amazing work, I love the channel and I love being able to review accidents along with you that end up making me a more cautious, practical diver.
I will NEVER EVER get why people get themselves in situations like this... I'm very sad for the son and incredibly angry at the father. He failed as a parent.
I love the colorful hats! Woody is living his best life, and these are exactly the vibes we need rn ❤️❤️. I learn so much from this channel. I’m new to diving, so I’m glad to have found y’all.
The hat alone is reason enough to make me watch these videos. I need to get one of those! I’ve also developed a MrBallen addiction thanks to this channel. Even if the stories themselves are depressing these reaction videos are trying to educate and enlighten people.
I just started watching Dive Talk and I can't get enough, your content has honestly help me overcome my fear of diving and I want to go in the near future! P.s Woodys Headwear is incredible as always.
Another riveting show, you guys and MrBallen make a great team btw and I'm so glad you guys care it's rare folks have a heart these days it's looked on as a sign of weakness but is not. Thanks again!
Love the videos from y’all. Been saving money for dive lessons, only 19. But your videos help me understand the dangers of diving, and keep my excitement in check. Plus I love smoking to y’all’s videos. Much love from Texas! Been mountain biking for years. Lately I want to visit the water realm too though: evolve to the next big adventure. Ps very sad story at the end about the father and son.
Diving is an amazing hobby. I did my first "try diving" around 19, and loved it. I unfortunately didn't get into diving until many years later, and wished I had done it sooner. Knowing myself when I was 20 or so, my best advice for when you do start diving is (a) remain calm no matter what - stop, think, then act, there's almost always time to react properly and (b) don't push beyond your limits (there's always another dive). Best of luck friend, I hope you can join us underwater soon.
I can't believe he took his child! 😩 Any death of a child hits as a profound tragedy, but to know that this boy probably felt terror and desperation at the time of his death? It's just so horrible.
I LOVE THAT YOU CARE ENOUGH TO WARN PEOPLE. I AM CONVINCED YOU SAVE LIVES WITH THESE VIDEOS! ANY WHO SAYS WHAT DO YOU CARE IS SOMEONE I DON'T EVEN WANT TO MEET. THANK YOU GUYS!!!!!
Hey, have you ever heard of the book "The Last Dive"? About a father and son duo who were excellent cave divers, but ultimately died wreck diving! Would love to hear you cover this story!
Who was this Dad? You take your son on his first dive to such a place?! So his son wasn’t certified? Unbelievable! And you go into the tunnel? This is sheer madness. Just sheer foolishness. How could he be so incredibly ignorant??? What of the signs??? Horrendous true story. I’m a Dad myself. I have a seven year old son and I would never take him to such a place. I’m also a diver. Just a basic open water PADI certification. But I would never take my son on such a dive. Even if he were older. FAR too dangerous. This is actually really bizarre that the Dad thought that this might be okay. I am utterly convinced that something was wrong with this man before he went to his death. Proverbs 16:18 “Pride comes before Destruction (death), and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Written thirty centuries ago by King Solomon son of David.) Tragic that his son also had to pay the price for his Dad’s incredible mistake. This is so sad. But so obviously preventable as well. It actually makes me angry. But sad more than anything else. God bless you two for spreading awareness. When you see signs saying a place is dangerous BELIEVE THEM. Or die.
This seriously breaks my heart every time. Hate to admit that. But a father and a son should not witness each other's deaths. Regardless, I really appreciate the attention this channel brings to potential future drivers. Probably hundreds of deaths were prevented by this channel.
@Dive Talk and @MrBallen Thanks for showcasing these vids, as a Dutch DM I love these IRL video's. I teach new divers that it's a procederudal sport, don't abide and it's on you. I've done 330+ dives atm and still love it. Don't go over your training level. You have to respect the experience!
In this case, I'm sorry to say, it is not about insufficient training. The dad definitely had more than enough training to know that his actions were absolutely foolish, and he ignored the signs posted all over the place as well. No amount of training can help someone acting like this.
With the most respect, your videos and stories are incredible to hear-as a fan of y’all and Mr. B dually. Thank you for sharing honestly with joy and respect as well as diving into tough subjects and giving us incredible science/personal experiences. Cheers and thank you!
well the whole Darwin award rhetoric is not really valid. Apart from what Gus said regarding the dive spots or in some countries even diving being restricted or completely banned after such events, there is the greater threat of what those you leave behind have to endure. It's not just you dying, you are potentially endangering the lives of your dive buddies, in this case their son, other divers and even first responders with such irresponsible actions. How many times have rescue/police divers been lost during a recovery operation? what about the mothers, fathers, husbands, wives and significant others left to years of mourning?
Even if no one is lost in the rescue/recovery, what about the psychological impact on those divers? They have to haul your dead body out of the cave, that’s not going to be a fun time.
Thanks for covering this! So crazy that you both have been in eagle’s nest!!!
Cant wait for the merch my guy
Love your content Mr b Allen from Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺
Love your content mcballen
As a father who was certified when I was 15 years old, became an instructor just to teach my son properly, this is the most reckless dive trip ever. He had no business taking that kid on any dive.
As someone who spins yarn, knits, crochets and weaves I absolutely love that Woody has his under the sea creature hats! Makes me smile and Gus shaking his head trying to hold a straight face is priceless!
Very inspirational, makes me want to make more and send them in 😂

This just seems so reckless.
My dad is a master commercial diver, he always taught me plan your dive around the person in your group with the least experience.
When I was a teenager as excited dad was for me to get into diving, he always planned our dives around my skill level.
I understand where you are coming from and I hope more comment here because I think you said it tastefully.
Cars are waaaaaaaaay safer

@@BackyardButcher the dad made a horribly irresponsible decision. Period!
@@BackyardButcher Most who are being blunt aren’t doing so to be cruel. It’s purely because it’s a horrifying tragedy, depressing as hell and it’s scary often trying to imagine putting their own in the same situation.
Woody: "I just want to talk about my cool hat and the fishes I talk to"
Gus: "Here's a depressing story instead!"
Woody was so happy at the very beginning of this video -- it was heartbreaking to watch his face fall when Gus mentioned the topic they'd be discussing for this video.
Sitting there in his his jellyfish head cover 😂
i really appreciate that u guys discuss these stories with respect for the deceased. *everyone* has made a reckless or uneducated decision at some point in their life, and many of us are lucky to still be here in spite of it. the less fortunate don't need to be mocked for it.
No, fools need to be mocked, so that future lives can be saved. Children especially need to know that a fool did a foolish thing -- they need to be taught, "Don't be a fool...Don't be like this fool or this will happen to you."
It is _much_ more important to prevent the preventable injury or death of countless people than to spare the feelings of a few.
So true

My 4 year old son recognizes Mr. Ballen (by face only, he’s not ready to actually listen to the strange, dark, and mysterious) because I watch him so often, but today, he saw this video and also said “oh, it’s Gus and Woody!” 😆😃 he sends his compliments to Woody’s hat.😂
Give him a chance. I watched the original 1978 John Carpenter's "Halloween" when I was 4. I've been a fan of horror movies and the strange, dark, and mysterious ever since. lol So he'll be just fine.

That dark stuff is ok sometimes imo-as long as it is presented in a format that isn't "tasteless" at all. Being exposed to _some_ small amount of these realities-presented in this way at least-will only ground and mature a child.
IMO, however you can judge what's ok for a kid under 5 by one rule: Is it controversial at all-by any group, anywhere, in any way _for more than just children?_
(I'm using the term "controversial" more heavily than you normally would be.)
...this conveniently excludes all horror movies, since alot of "extremist" churches will consider it devil-influenced or whatever--which is works fine because horror is unrealistic and therefor pointless for a child _at best._ It excludes anything _at all_ sexual as well since some stricter groups of people consider even the most minor public expressions of sexuality to be inappropriate.
@@wadewilson8011 I watched a nightmare on elm Street when I was 6, and I didn't sleep for about 8 years 😆
Not wise at all, totally irresponsible to expose your child to thing like that.
If I remember the incident right, it wasn’t the first time they’d gone there. There’s a long long long thread on Scubaboard about it.
“I SAW IT ON TV” made the dad think it would be easy. As for the child, he is not the first kid killed by parental stupidity. (Think of kids that died due to anti-vaxxers.) I feel sorry the child who is a victim of bad parenting
.
I second that!
Yup. Were all here for that
Agreed
Exactly. Just talk a nice conversation with this three amazing persons
That would be so awesome!
These Mr Ballen diving horror stories brought me to this channel....and became a dive talk addict
The diving videos are really scary for me. One mistake can be critical. I imagine it’s an amazing thing to do but I’m not brave enough. I hope amateur divers take the time to get experience safely.
Totally agree.

Wonderful thing about John Ballen is he is an experienced Naval diver. And the other wonderful thing is he is a great storyteller.
I mean it's just a horrible, callous, gross thing to say.

its not that Ballen is ruthless, its that hes factual. you dont have to mix emotion with story facts.
NOBODY was crushed by water pressure.
@@pattywieder3268 I guess he’s emphasising the point of how dangerous this dive and cave diving is if you are unprepared. I feel so bad for the kid and his family. It must be so complicated to grieve the fathers death since he was also responsible for the death of the son. And to lose two family members at the same time? Terrible 😢
Couldn't imagine being the son's mother...

As for the video, I've watched this channel long enough to at least know that diving into a cave without certification, and without proper equipment, is a recipe for disaster. Sadly, it cost them their lives, and there will probably be more, simply because some humans don't always think straight and love taking risks.

Another form of awareness this promotes is people 'treating' less experienced divers to places like Eagle's Nest. "Oooh, my son is learning to dive, let's take him here!" That's like "My 16 year old is learning to drive, let's let him race this weekend."

Thank you for sharing this info. That story of your godfather is ridiculous. lol
Wow. I thought I took a crazy risk when I went down 140 ft on recreational gear with regular air. I ended up having to 2 15 decompression stops
Thanks forgot posting that, i had a feeling it was something like that.

It has the opposite affect of teaching people to ignore the warnings,
@@electrictroy2010 that is very true. I guess not understanding the exact nature of the danger would make it easier to ignore/not take seriously

Such a sad story, regardless of what lead to these deaths it's a tragedy. RIP
Woody we love your hats don’t worry.

So they wanted to continue diving with a corpse onboard the boat? Wow…
Hard to imagine doing something this reckless with your child in tow. Poor kid.
I have 0 experience and could never do this but you guys are my new binge show. thanks for all the information!!
(c) Just because you’re young doesn’t mean you’re invincible. Don’t take life-threatening risks
@@electrictroy2010 Definitely will have my mortality in mind when I go diving in the future 👍 starting off in a pool though for sure
Only got hooked on both channels in the last few weeks. Great work guys
I can't believe he took his child! 😩 Any death of a child hits as a profound tragedy, but to know that this boy probably felt terror and desperation at the time of his death? It's just so horrible.
Such a senseless loss.
Thanks for sharing.
Risking your own life I get , but risking the life of your child...I don't get it :| why are there people like this
I LOVE THAT YOU CARE ENOUGH TO WARN PEOPLE.
Interesting, yes sounds horribly sad but would love to hear the story.
See. Even experienced divers die. No thanks. I will just snorkel over reefs and wrecks. I will only dive in video games
You guys seriously have the best podcast I've been streaming non stop!
Or die.
Wow! just need to take a second to congratulate you both! Such a huge success and so stoked for you both
This seriously breaks my heart every time. Hate to admit that. But a father and a son should not witness each other's deaths. Regardless, I really appreciate the attention this channel brings to potential future drivers. Probably hundreds of deaths were prevented by this channel.
We love your hats woody! It’s cool that you keep finding new ones
OH NO ITS BALLEN! He's a bad man! Guy is always after me, do this to the like button, do that... come on Ballen! ;D
Run for your like!!
@@ameliasparkles13 The only thing that scares me more than Ballen's stories and silly threats are the people I meet in the comments ;D
Let the dad perish, but my heart goes out to that little boy! He didnt want to disappoint his father! : (
Its not fair!
Came for the dive talk, never been in my life, stay for that and Woodys hats. Love these guys.
