    A consultant I work with was telling me he just got certified as a rescue diver and was on an island off of Honduras and was thinking about going on a cave dive nearby just to try it. He's not cave certified and immediately I heard your voices in my head saying, "this is a bad ideaaaa". Definitely directed him to your channel as soon as he said anything about diving

    As someone who has experienced a very similar loss as the uncle did, I not only feel sorrow for the family of the nephew, but I also feel a great deal of pain for the uncle. As a survivor, there is an insane amount of survivors guilt and an unbelievably high degree of "What if I...", or "If only I had..." that runs through the mind constantly and its much stronger at night, before bed, and as you're waking up. I feel for the uncle, as I am certain he still experiences these things and has to live each day wondering how he could have made a difference, if any.

    I looked up the details and found they were both NSS-CDS cave certified, having done the course together 3 years earlier. The victim was working as an SDI Open Water Instructor. He had dived this cave complex 20 times out of a total of 75 cave dives. So he appears to have had appropriate training and to have been in current diving practice, although I have no info on their DPV cave training. They were in dry suits, hoods but no gloves in a water temp of 72F. The victim was using a backmount pair of steel Faber 125s with no manifold, sounds damn heavy to me!
    I'm not familiar with NSS-CDS course requirements but you would hope that basic line procedures as you describe would be explained and practiced.
    Points arising from this sad incident must therefore start with the mental discipline to avoid distraction and not get separated from your buddy, and then the emphasis that line procedures are taught for a reason and need to be remembered and practiced often. I'm not saying these guys got a tick for finishing the course and then just winged it from then on, but deviation from best practice can be slow and insidious.

    I love that Gus and woody pointed out that a scooter doesn’t allow you to go further into a cave or more distance, putting complete faith into your scooter could be a death sentence if used incorrectly. Should only be used to traverse parts of the cave where silt won’t complicate things, to conserve energy and air.

She asked if there are any channels I follow, my favorite, etc. She stopped me when I mentioned Dive Talk to ask about it. She is open water certified and loves SCUBA diving. When I told her what y’all do, she said that she wants to cave dive so badly, but that she wouldn’t attempt it before she’s cave certified. I was really happy to hear that! I told her how educational your channel is, and she was excited to check it out! Anyway, y’all have talked about/done videos on so many divers who aren’t cave trained thinking they could handle it, and it turns out to be a disaster. I thought it was refreshing talking to a diver who isn’t cave trained and won’t try it until she is certified!

They're usually out in the actual river, but most of the time in the morning, before the sun comes out, you can shine a light on the spring area and get eye shine from a few. I seen a small gator in a submerged cave once, in Salt Springs a few hours south, but from my experience they avoid the actual caves themselves.

    The issue with most dive plans is that it`s really hard to plan for panic and the increased sack rate. Just imagine how much air you`ll need in panic, with your scooter broken, buddy anywhere, silt out no vis and you are searching for the line. If you plan in 1/3 - it could happen with ease to use way more than 1/3 of your tank in that 5 or 10 mins that you need to overcome all of this.

    • @DIVETALK
      @DIVETALK  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not really hard, during the cave DPV class I had to swim my DPV Out (I.E. We pretended it broke) from 2,000 feet in the cave and recorded my SAC rate. Then I took that SAC rate and multiplied it by 2.5 when doing gas planning. The amount of gas I'm willing to take determines my total penetration for the dive.

    • @saschaganser9671
      @saschaganser9671 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DIVETALK I agree, but open system usually means ggas supply is your limiting factor. You plan for all eventualities means you don`t dive. And panic let`s your gas consumption explode. I`m pretty sure, even on a 15l tank, they could not do this dive if they make the assumption of scooter breakdown at worst point, swim out + incresead sac rate due to panic. Even if you calculate 5 mins. to realize, analyze the problem and calm down again, it`s propably not enough.
      I dive a lot with 11l tanks and even without a cave, a problem + panic in a bad spot makes the dives tight on air.

    Little River is one of my favorite caves... It fairly unique compared to a lot of other Florida caves / systems... Good info regarding DPV / scooters... I was trained exactly with a scooter failure in mind at the longest penetration point. I'm trying to understand how if these guys were full cave divers with experience that they couldn't get back on the line... IF anyone who is a cave diver wasn't put through lost line zero viz drills, you got bad instruction, or you actually aren't a cave diver...

    Hey guys! Love your channel and your commentary. I'm concerned about Woody though. He doesn't seem his comical, weird self lately. I hope he's well and returns to his goofy banter with Gus soon! Wish you all, all the best!
    Yes, I understand this video isn't really the place for silliness but Woody just doesn't seem himself.

    Love your channel here on TH-cam and have watched many of your videos. Understand you guys opperate out Georgia too. Oftentimes you mention the current best divers in their fields, like Edd Sorenson and Johnathon Bird. There are others too that you should try to collaborate with like Barry Shively out of Pensacola, FL. He's certified more tech divers inside and out of the Oriskany than anyone alive. He's got tons of video too. You guys should ask him if he's willing to share some of it?

    Gus and Woody, this story put a question in my head. When you go on cave dives using DPVs (due to penetration distance), do you account for the DPV failing at the deepest point penetration wise in the cave? I'm guessing you guys do consider this but do you stage bottles or just take more air or what?

    • @robertjencks3679
      @robertjencks3679 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they might have discussed this in their older videos about getting their certification for cave DPV but I cannot remember the details.

    Gus and Woody 🌞 have you ever done a story on the palancar cave in Cozumel and have you ever dived in it? I once swam buy it while doing a 100-foot dive, the sign at the entrance said " expert cave divers only" of course I just kept going away from at as I am not a cave diver. P they say it is a gorgeous cave to dive in, but I have no desire to go into any cave as I am too claustrophobic and I don't like being in the dark! I love your videos 💯 as always!

    I Can’t wait to be certified.. once I am certified and I find myself a couple certified cave diving buddies oh boy will the journeys be endless.. 0o I love Florida, there is so much to do here.. from the woods to the ocean to the cave diving to dirt biking etc etc I was and never will be bored.. Bowfishing was another one that I love doing

    Why do they label Suffocation(ran out of oxygen) as Drowning(intake of water/liquid into the lungs)

    • @Lazlo-os1pu
      @Lazlo-os1pu 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most people that run out of oxygen underwater end up inhaling water into the lungs involuntarily

      Because that map was created by an artist who sells the prints, I actually own one, so he doesn’t want someone to copy it and start selling prints out there, which of course we won’t do.

    Hi Gus & woody I like watching your channel even though I’m not a scuba diver but I free dive out here in Hawaii for recreational use. But I have a question: EVERY YEAR a hurricane hit’s Florida but since all that water changes the surface area on land with damage does it damage or change those underwater cave systems you guy’s through? Just out of curiosity
