- The 440 is technically a hybrid between an super low hour 044 bottomend that I picked up a few years ago and new 440 topend and carb. So I referenced it as a 440 since that is what is driving the process. Call it what you like - it has the best of both.
I was a little surprised to see how well the Psy-Ko zipkitted 044/440 handled the Psy-Ko SS 462. The 462 is just about as far (one fuzz left) as a guy can go and still look stock. the 044/440 has one more level to go.
I posted this video first since it refences the 441/372 saw-off and will be ordered later.
This is the same bar & chain used in the 462/572 saw off so it will be a good comparison for the 572 and 440/044 as well.

Yah ... 440 with the max - flow system seemed to be right there or a fuzz quicker thru the timber than the 462cm with the same bar and chain and a similar state of tune even whilst giving up a few cc’s of displacement ... nothing new under the sun ... as for me ... I’m stocking up on 461s lol 😝
I only run stock saws with muff mod and in that context the new saws are superior .your saws are impressive in the soft woods in your neck of the woods less so in our hardwoods down under
Jack hi I see you will be doing a comparison between a 372xp and a ms 441. Is the ms 441 the carbeurator version or the mtronic version? Also will they have a certain zipkit on them? Stay cool and be safe
Mike hi. C-M 441. The first run was in stock form. The 441 is insane-o-ized while the 372 has the extreme zipkit, so not a fair comparison to run those two against each other now.

I have a Tanaka trim saw. Everytime I go to fire it up after warm up while I'm in tree. I ua e to squeeze the trigger to get it to start. And then I have to feather the gas to get it to get up to full throttle. Any help jack would be awewome. Nice saws there.
Ya don't buy junk. Get what you pay for.
Question- Are there any disadvantages to porting a saw, perhaps shortened life or less fuel efficient? If not, why don't they come like that stock?
Grizz Kid hi. They will kickback faster and with much more authority. Longevity is dependent on multiple factors like the mix oil choice, chains (whether or not they actually cut), needle adjustments (if that is an option), maintenance habits of the operator, etc., etc. In my experience, barring any weird mechanical failure, there not a significant loss in user life.
As far as fuel mileage, that depends as well. Again, the jetting adjustments and chains play a big role there. Maintenance habits are also a factor.
There are hydrocarbon and noise standards that saws have to meet in certain countries.

Ken Aylward hi. The 044/440s don't really vibrate that bad from my perspective. This is most likely from the fairly light weight piston being off set from the pretty decent weighted crank throws. Spring mounts are WAY less forgiving to tweak-age as well. I do like the smoothness in a spring mounted saw personally.
The 1/4 twist filter system in the new saws is a known quantity to vibrate and wear the plastic to plastic "stud/nut interface. The net gain is a sloppy fit and particulates passing by the rubber/plastic sealing surface. I cannot tell how many time that dust has gotten by lip and into the engine.
The stock air filtration system passes ~ 77 c.f.m The Max-Flow system passes ~ 135 c.f.m. The stock, cartridge style, whether round or oblong, filter is not even in the same ball park flow wise. Additionally, the oil is what traps the particulates in the foam element. Complete seal around the base/carb box interface. I've used the Max-Flow systems for years and have never seen any trace of passage. Replaced a lot of pistons with the standard hd filters being used.
The old school saws might burn a little more fuel but, I have used both and would not detune a saw based on a little less mpg. A busheler wants more power and less weight, yes.
There is also a more extreme wear factor in the factory air leak saws.
I checked the timing twice in this video. The 044/440 smokes the 462 by at least 2 seconds. So the smog saws don't necessarily have more power either.
