I enjoy your videos Jack. Keep it up. I have to agree with your assessment on these mid weights. I own a 461, a 462, a 460, and recently picked up an early no decomp 044. All are bone stock and that 044 pulls like i wish the newer ones did. Amazing saw!

A few years ago I worked for a my local watershed management department that had communal saws, you just grab one in the morning and go to work. Most guys went for the brand new huskys, but tucked away and neglected was an old 044, which I was told was the old fallers saw who ran it hard for years and it was worn out (Vancouver Island, BIG fir and cedar) and not to bother with it as it was destined for scrap. Well, naturally I spent some time and cleaned it all up, only using parts available from other saws, and for 8 months, that saw started on the 6th pull every single day and ran for 8 hours until I shut it off, used for thinning timber and bucking. By the end of the season guys were trying to get to the saw before I did so they could use it. Been looking for years but I haven't been able to find one for myself. This brings back good memories, thanks!

      A Canadian hi.
Your narrative painted a nice piece.
I'm betting dimes to doughnuts the 372s were mostly the xt/x-torq/smog saws. But,,, Ive been wrong before....
Of course we see here that the 044/440 platform can be formidable.
      Thanks for watching.

Hey Jack! I got my saw home and put her to work. Ran about 4 tanks through it sawing some tougher fir trees. It's strong, really strong. Revs fast and holds it through the cut. I will edit this as I get some more time on it this week and it "turns the corner". This is my fourth saw modded by Jack, three of which I am currently running. My 390 and 395 half about a year and a half of production falling under there belt and counting. If you are concerned about longevity in these saws, my experience says that they last. Like others have said if you make a living with a saw or cut enough firewood to want something different, do not hesitate to have him build you one, they are worth it and he's easy to deal with. Thanks again Jack, Saving my pennies for the next one.

I've had a number of ported saws, and my personal favorite are the HOTSAWS101 builds. They don't give up torque or usable RPM range like some others I've had. Got a few years on my oldest saw build from Jack and it's been flawless!

Have a little time on this saw now, broke in great. It is really something to run, very strong. Couldn't be happier with the build, thanks Jack!

    Howdy!
I bought a Stihl 462 this last summer to buck firewood for home heating and have been very happy with it. My old larger saw is a Jonsered 625 with a closed port cylinder I installed myself just because. The Jonsered is a very good saw and reliable. I have owned it since new in 1992 or 93. Never had any troubles with it whatsoever. I put the closed port cylinder on it only because a freind of mine bought one just like it, can’t have that. The claim is the closed port cylinder gives the saw an additional 1,000 rpm and additional hp. What I have noticed though is a noticeable lack of grunt the stock cylinder gave the saw. I have tuned it per Billy Ray’s procedure and others but that grunt is just not there. Maybe putting the stock cylinder back on might answer my questions about it.
I got the Stihl 462 for a few reasons with #1 being that comparatively the Stihl is considerably lighter and significantly more powerful. The Jonsered saw is still loved and has provided me hours and hours of trouble free service and lots of firewood to keep me and mine warm during the long bitterly cold winters up here in Montana.
At 70 years old now my Jonsered was kicking my old ass due to it’s weight, a few pounds over time can wear a fella out so a trip to my not so local Stihl dealer was in order. I am not decrepit or too old to dance just yet but I needed some relief which the 462 gave me. I really don’t need any more power out of my 462 but I am an all American male which always drives me to make things better. This leaves me with the question is modifying these saws as powerful as they are really the way to go? Back in my hunting days if you wanted more power out of your rifle instead of bumping the upper limits of safety by maxing out the powder load you got a more powerful rifle and that was that. There is always the down side of having that new .338 kicking the crap out of you when you touched it off. I learned to shoot my .308 better instead. :) Lots of faster better cartridges and bullets have been developed over the last 100 years geared for specific uses but big bullets are difficult to shoot well for me. I got a bum shoulder from a motorcycle crash in my youth.
I guess the point of this long winded comment is a question I have on how these saws hold up over time with the modifications done to them? Not much point in spending $1,200.00 + for a saw and then ruin it because the basic design is not able to deal with the increased power output over time. Please enlighten us with your wisdom Sir, I for one would appreciate it. :)
    Love your videos!!

I agree with what your saying I also have the 462 cm it’s power to weight is very good any more power in that small of a box I can’t see it holding up as long but I as well would like to see what else u can get out of it when bucking up the log u always want it to cut faster

Well that’s odd regarding the jonsered. I have a 670 champ of 1991 vintage and it flat hauls ass in the cut. Much more zip than my 1989 husqvarna 61 which is the sister saw to your 625. Assuming you installed a 670 cylinder as it and the 625 use the rubber intake boot. The 630 is also closed port but used a bolt on intake similar to the 266xp. That 266xp is unique in that it has a very small combustion chamber. By removing the base gasket, often 190 psi compression can be had, though it has slightly smaller transfers which don’t have much of a duct shape like the 670 or the 268xp.

      Regular Joe Hay Regular Joe!
I got the closed port cylinder not long after I bought my Jonsered 625 II which was back around 1992 or 93 I think. I have always taken good care of it and it is in great shape. A beautiful looking saw to be sure and very well built. I tuned it using a tachometer, can’t remember what the rpms are at the moment but it is to 625 II specification. Don’t know if the 670 and the 625 II should be set to the same rpm or not really. Information is hard to find on these saws as are parts. Any help would be appreciated regarding this saw. Thanks!

      Harlow Kinney Hey Harlow!
I sort of went on a quest before I bought my 462 and there was a pricey little learning curve that came with that quest. Wanting a more powerful and lighter saw I went with a 261 first. I was disappointed because I put a 3/8th chain with a 20 inch bar which is what I found to be the limit for this 4 hp 50cc saw. Don’t get me wrong about the 261, it is a great little saw with little as the key word. Putting a too big of chain or bar combination on a saw just kills it’s performance which I found out. I put an 18 inch bar with a 3/8ths chain and the saw is much improved over the 20 inch. If I had just left the stock 20 inch bar with the 325 chain I could have saved myself a lot of confusion. By screwing things up from time to time is how we humans learn and adapt. I am very happy with my 261 but it is just not the right saw for bucking 20 inch diameter fur productively. The 462 on the other hand is more than enough with a 3/8ths chain and a 25 inch bar, the longest I have tried so far. With our weather up here and short summers we only have a limited time to get our wood put up. My goal is have all of the next winters wood cut, split and stacked by the first of August. With that mark I needed a bigger saw just like my rifle analogy. With constant rain from April/May up into mid June I don’t have much time to get that work done, before that it is still snowing.

Holy crap that's one fast 044!! Very impressive!
It looked very smooth doing it as well. Is that a 12mm or 10mm (slant finned) 44? Either way, fantastic job on them all @hotsaws101
I think I'll be sending you a brand spanky new ms461 as soon as it's in my possession. I love my current lightly ported (by me... no transfer work) 461's, but you seem to be the man for workhorse 461's. Maybe an ms361 that I'm rebuilding for sentimental purposes as well. It was my pop's go to saw. I do love my 361 and 362 as well. Some of the best lightweight's ever IMHO. Anyhow..... I'll be in touch soon.
    Take care man
    and GOD Bless!

Hi Jack, you do some great work and I have learned much from your R&D. I’m even starting to have quite a collection of cookies too!
Question for you if you don’t mind nudging me in the right direction. I have a stock 461r, and want to gradually do a few easy mods on a poor man’s budget. Since all your saws are insanely kick-butt, going to be hard to even get close. What are your thoughts on a max-flow air filter, 8 tooth sprocket running a 32” Oregon RW bar with the skip chain? In the south I tangle with a lot of cedar elm and oak. Firewood operation mainly, but do some land clearing. Any suggestions from you will be greatly appreciated. Take care and keep the cookie cutters coming.

I picked up an 044 recently and it's in pretty good shape ,never had one before so I'm eager to put it in some wood.im in Iowa so plenty of hard wood to cut,any recommendations on a bar and chain combo to run in hardwoods like oak and Ash? Typical Jack Beelar chain,, it cuts awesome,, not saying I know everything but as a side note to the broad leaf maple comment that he mentions, you can see how fast and efficient that chain is in a straight cut , in the maples it’s more of a workout on those saws then you see in this video,, especially with a Freggin 8 tooth, point is the fact those saws preform like they do is pretty awesome right??? Yah it’s way more ridiculous that 462 cut maples with that chain ,, I’ve cut in Washington, Alaska , and California, if your wondering if you should have jack mod a saw ??? Doit it’s a game changer for a guy who makes a living with one I can personally tell ya that..

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Royle Farms hi. Most of the time you can "cross reference" the covers. Although, it's not always a just bolt it on and go add-on. Alleviating plastic here and there may become necessary. The 661 uses a larger hole in the cover to work with the new "1/4 twist throttle" system. Sealing will be an issue on the "0" series and/or the 461 machines using that cover. The 084 version may work better in that application.
      Thanks for watching.

George hi. Thanks for watching my small offerings.
My dad was a gypo most of his working career. In the '70s I would help out in the summers. He had a gaggle of 041s. A few Echos. And some Homelites. I ran all of them at some point, I fell my first tree while chasing landing in the summer of '76 - Homelite XL12 with a 28" bar and chain round filed by myself. The 041s were bullet proof if you took even a decent amount of care with them.
The problem with zipping well used saws is the possibility they won't take it. Sometime they are so well used that I cannot do the entire process to them either - which means not "full meal deal".
