    This is southern Brittany. Sailing to the Golfe du Morbihan in a yacht is at least a 3-day passage from the south coast of England. Everyone I know who owns a yacht based on the south coast has never been there - including the skipper of a 50ft charter yacht. The western Channel crossing alone is 90 miles - some 36 hrs. (I know it well, as I have done it many times in larger sailing vessels). So no - I towed my dinghy there behind my car and took her in the ferry. That made it a 4hr drive from my home (2hrs in England 2hrs in France) and an overnight ferry. That is why I can sail in southern Brittany and my yacht-owning friends can't.

      South Brittany and the Golfe are wonderful and you have brought back many memories with a great video. I have been crossing the Channel for the past 35 years and attended my first festival in ’82 and the the first one in Douarnenez in ’88. They and Brittany never fail to bring surprises, new friends and catch up with old ones over the years. There are so many places to visit which are no crowded unlike those on the Channel Coast. Thank you for the memories.

    I have now watched four or five of your videos. I have long forgotten how much I loved my introduction to sailing and how I felt like I had belonged to the process. I remember "FEELING the water and the Wind and somehow instinctively knowing which way the wind was going to change. My professional life moved me quickly through life here and there and I never got back to it. The Simplicity of it and you capture it and communicate it so very well in these videos. The good and the challenging but the memories.....Oh, the memories. I am from the USA and spent 20 plus years overseas. I would love to re-learn-learn the skills again and enjoy the simplicity your videos show. I'm inspired to rejoin the world this way. Thank you.

    My little boat is a Westerly Nomad 1969, 22ft, with bilge keels and tan sails. I couldn't agree more that France is wonderful for cruising. I've always sailed across from Brightlingsea. The boat is in Toulon, south of France right now but she's coming back to the UK through the canal du Midi early next summer. The Nomad is not a boat that you would refer to as some sort boat to impress or as one American put it - 'she is not exactly gorgeousness compared' but she has a solid roof over one's head, masses of room inside and a very shallow draught. So, you might say, she falls into a category not quite so easily definable. Super videos, well done.

    • @nicholasbell9017
      @nicholasbell9017 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the Westerly 22 and Nomad have lovely curving lines, very strongly built, and have taken ocean voyages. I have a Westerly Warwick, also a very good little cruiser. But the Nomad, with the Gunter rig makes it much easier to lower the short mast for inshore, river and canal exploration.
      Don't knock the Nomad, she's a great boat!

    Beautiful work Sir. That soft footed lug sail sure is an easy rig to set. You don't seem to ship an outboard ' iron top-gallant', that's proper old school seamanship - by tide, sail and sweeps alone. Bravo.

    Once again a beautiful video and again you harken me back to my days at sea. I would love to find a cruiser dinghy like yours or near the size of yours, but here in the US, they are not easy to find. I've been looking now (without a broker) and short of building one myself, I don't know. We have a lot of water ways but our Marina's are of a much richer bent than what I'm observing for your in Europe, especially in the UK and France. Would love to spend some time in that region sailing in a Dinghy. I recently bought your book, bit of a palava trying to get it here to the US, but it appears I'll be successful. Looking forward to reading and getting lost in it. I appreciate your videos and the dreams its currently creating for me. Thank you.

    Ahoy Roger, Do keep up the vids as they keep us land lorn sailors in better spirits as we wait to weigh away. I share your philosophy, small boat big pleasure. I've a Dufour 24 boeyed in Saint Marine in the bay of the Odet river, in Britanny. Built a dory to use as a tender, a bit impratical for the sharp currents. I hope to coastal cruise as the 80 cm. bulb keel should allow me a great amount of flexabillity even to go up shallow estuarys. Avel Mad's her name ,fair winds in Breton to ya mate. David Askew

    I just came across your videos. They are so pleasant, informative, relaxing, and well done. I'm an American solo canoeist. A 1927 National Geographic magazine contains an article by two Americans who took a canoe down the Canal du Midi. They used a tent over their canoe, much like yours. • @mikefule330
      @mikefule330 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Dinghy Cruising Association has some members who use boats with foredecks and some with small cuddies. You could look up "dinghy" in a dictionary, but that would be the wrong approach, because "dinghy cruising" is not just about dictionary definitions. Dinghy cruising is about having fun and adventures in small, mainly open, boats. It's about using the boat to explore, get away from it all, making the most of the boat you have, rather than spending the most money on your boat. It's about what you enjoy doing rather than what you enjoy being seen doing. I've looked at some pictures of the Hartley 16 and it looks like it sails like a dinghy (crew hanging out to balance the boat), everyone grinning with joy, rather than posing with a Pimms, and I think it would be regarded as a "dinghy with a lid". Enjoy your boat.

    So Rodger, another good video but you say you are remarkably free to go where you will in a Dinghy, but are you really? So do you need a Passport, boat registration, VHF licence, insurance etc etc? You should do a video on the necessary items you need to really be free in a Dinghy. If i bought a 2nd hamd Dinghy and just sailed to France i could end up in a whole world of trouble and probably lose the boat ive just bought aswell.

I currently own a Columbia 28MkII and a 20' O'day overnighter. There is nothing more beguiling than Guten Morgen Ich möchte einen Garantieanspruch für ein Messer mit gebrochener Klinge geltend machen. Sagen Sie mir bitte, wie ich dabei vorgehen soll. Vielen Danka flotilla of dinghys under sail.
    I also derive great amusement from the thought of so many arses lowered over so many transoms and all the cheery turds bobbing along behind!

      Toilets are provided all around the French coast.

      @@RogerRoving I am still skeptical that if say 4 miles out with an off-shore wind to contend with that I would be able to hold on to my bowels whilst tacking back for the facilities. No! I would strip off, lower myself into the briny and expel the matter whilst frogging frantically to avoid a mix-up. If the water were too cold for such an endeavour, then a pan from the galley box would do, or perhaps a bucket brought along specifically for that eventuality.

    French boat festivals don’t seem to popular with the brothers.
