- I return to the Île de Sein, surrounded by dangerous tidal races: an island of myths and an indomitable spirit.
MY BOAT
Do you want a boat like mine?
She is 15ft long, an adapted Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany, including her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are quite common in France.

Similar dinghies can often be found for sale in the French magazine le Chasse-Marée

Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France).

Roger, I’ve just waded through the pages and pages of comments and they all say the same things. May I add to their huge total and say THANKS for all your efforts in bringing us tour travels. Capt John.
I've been watching you for years now, and I've long fantasized about dinghy or pocket cruising. I've learned quite a bit from reading and from older wiser friends, but also from watching your problems and how you solve them. I've been practicing, and I'm finally ready to graduate from lake daysailing to cruising. Thanks for sharing these happy journeys, and thanks for being a kindred romantic.
I tremendously enjoy your films, Roger! I have been cruising along the coasts of Holland, Belgium, England, Scotland, Germany and Denmark for the past 42 years in a 27-footer which, luckily, I can still manage single-handed (all my former sailing friends are now looking after grandchildren). Seeing you in the dinghy I wonder if I should sell my 27-footer and follow your example.
23 minutes and 54 seconds of tranquility. Beautiful island and a great story along with perfect sailing. Wonderful Roger, wonderful.
Love your work Roger, it's salt of the Earth stuff in a frantic 21st century world. Thanks!
Very nice thank you for taking gus along for the ride
An essential document for today and for all those to come.
Hi from northern Japan. Rigorously acquiring important technical, nautical terms in English, such as "the lumpy bits." On my way to become a true English sailor. Thank you, Roger-san!
Another thoroughly enjoyable little adventure. Thank you, Roger
Other things have dragged me away from dunking my little boat into the water but with your videos I’m feeling the need for it.
I enjoyed your story about the island very much.
I love your calm and eloquent narration.
Marvelous, what a lovely little village Sein. Love your adventures and totally love your boat. Happy Holidays!
Wonderful to see you again Roger. Your videos always make my day. They are the calm in the middle of the storm.
Hello Mr Barnes.
I'm a sailor and boatbuilder from lake Constance. A far calmer and more limited spot for sailing as the Bretagne or GB. Your kind of sailing and filming is a Inspiration for me in sailing and boatbuilding. This kind of sailing was established here in Germany, I would say until the 70's in dinghys like the PIRAT, KORSAR, ZUGVOGEL or many other small boats. Up then a kind of race starts and with growing incomes the boats get bigger and bigger, but the easeness and closeness to nature gets lost. You show me and obviously a lot of other sailors what we miss. Thanks therefore.
Hi Axel, I have a young son in Konstanz with my first wife. I live in Salisbury. Looking forward to visiting him, if its possible in 2021. And I would very much like to make a dinghy sailing trip around the lake one day. Best Lee
In America, people screw up when out sailing and the think a bigger boat will avoid the problems. The boats get so big that they never leave the dock, and there they are perfectly safe.

Beautifully done, thanks again.
I have just had my breakfast whilst thoroughly enjoying watching you sail to Île de Sein and back......23 mins 54 secs of joy.....Thanks Roger.
Ahhh, just what I needed.
That was an exceptional cool trip
"I hope you've enjoyed that ...", ... yes Roger, I did ...
After 28 years in the Royal Navy dashing here and there I so much enjoy your very relaxing videos
Thank you Roger. Meraviglioso
So pleased your making content again Roger, your videos are gentle and comforting in these times of such turmoil
Thank you.
Thank you for bringing us along, Fair Winds.
A very fine short film about small boat sailing and cruising. Thanks Roger!
Always a viewing and informational enjoyment...🇨🇦
A braver man than me, making that crossing in what can be treacherous waters. It was nice to meet with you a few weeks ago. Fair winds for the future..
Roger, your Vlogs and narratives are heart felt, respect from me Roger, stay well.
Thank you
Thank you Roger. Please stay safe and healthy.
Qui voit Sein voit sa fin 🤭
La seule île bretonne qu'il me reste a visiter, merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo Roger. 👍🙏😎
Bon appétit avec Didier !
Et bonne route à Basile
Hi Roger, I always look forward to your videos and enjoy them very much. You inspired me to build an Ilur. Tomorrow I will be epoxying on my last plank. Still lots to do though and with the cooling temperatures of the US Pacific Northwest I’ll have to finish it next spring/summer.
The shot at 8 1/2 min reveals the toy tender (as recommended in the pages of your book I believe?) and answered my question how did you run ashore... Nice to see in action!
Awesome trip, good to have you back. Your book has pride of place on my table. Your informative encouragement hss been a real motivator for me. Your understated trips make our CanAm dinghy cruising adventures pale in comparison. Thanks and more please.
That was wonderful. I've never seen anything like Ile de Sein. Thank you.
You, Sir, are a true sailor. Great video as usual. Regards Michael
My only comparable experience was sailing to the Glénans from Luctudy in calm weather and a neap tide. The peace one finds is amazing, and so much noisier is "normal" life when arriving back on the continent. Thank you for sharing your "périple" that had to be so well calculated so as not to get into trouble with the Raz. I would have loved to be with you but it was impossible this year.
Great trip. Enjoyed the story about the island men during WWII and how people survive there. I own a 36ft sloop on Chesapeake Bay in America. Eighteen inches between low and high tide here. I can only imagine the huge tides and currents you experience there in France and enjoy how you plan your trip to use wind and sea and drying out. Enjoy learning about all the other boats and how they were made, how each unique area developed their own style vessel. Keep em coming.
Another excellent video. Thoroughly enjoyed the history lesson too on the Free French. Lest we forget 🍷☕️
A real tonic. Thankyou for introducing us to the Ile de Seine.
Wonderful, addicted, subscribed. The architecture of old Quebec (Canada) is so reminiscent of your area. Very familiar and foreign at the same time, merci.
Love your mellow narrative Roger. Keep it up!
Thank you Roger. Never heard of this Island. Quite a difficult place to reach in a small boat.
Hooray! I check for your videos every few days and when the new one appears, it's a celebration. This was particularly good. Lots of sailing footage (never enough), brilliant story telling, tide/weather details, your talking, and the beautiful recognition of the march of time. Thank you Roger, I feel as if you're an old friend, and if only we could meet again soon.
I love camping n always wanted to sail n this looks awesome! The ability to travel by means of wind!
Great video Roger, its winter here of course but we're getting near springtime, meanwhile your videos both warm us in the winter, and inspire us to get out there in the coming summer. Thanks so much for the effort you put in.
Keep them coming, these videos are what get us through the winter 🙏🏻
Wonderful stuff! I could watch all day.
I really liked this video. And loved the Isl De Sein sir. Thank you so much!
Superbe balade dans un beau canot a voile..=) instructif et reposant. Merci et bon vent !!=)
Hello and thank you for the lovely sailing video
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Roger for all the work to bring such pleasure from an informative and inspiring film of a lifestyle and activity many might contemplate and hope to achieve but few can actually attain but one can dream and work to emulate in one way or another👍 best wishes as we face next lockdown in the U.K. not going to be easy looking for a boat now 🤷♂️
Welcome Back. Great video. Congrats on your article on classic boat 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Greetings Roger, from the shoreline of Connecticut in The States. I had very nearly finished re-watching all of your videos when your latest video popped up on my screen. So glad you continue to take us along with you on your adventures. Your videos and book led me to join the DCA in 2019, and after a nearly 25 year gap with no sail boat, I have recently purchased a used 14' Arey's Pond catboat and look forward to some adventures of my own next year once she has been gone over and upgraded this fall and winter. I have very much enjoyed your channel and have learned a great deal - but I have always wondered about your overnight DCA cruising rallies back in England. Do you have any footage of 'camp life' that might be of interest? Best of health to you during this difficult time! -Briggs
Therapeutic and informative with lovely photography to boot. A new fan.
Thanks for that short sailing trip you shared with us. Keep sailing!
Thanks Roger😀👍🏻
An absolutely wonderful video, with a wonderful historical perspective, and a very gently nuanced presentation. Thank you!
Quite an adventure and much history too. Thank you!
Always a pleasure to find another one of your adventures. Add to that your tranquil voice and the rush of the day fades away. Cheers!
Lovely sail to an intriguing island - thank you so much.
Thank you. I really really enjoy your videos. Perhaps one day you will do one around Italy?
A fascinating history lesson Roger, linking the French and British nations. Ile de Sein looks a great place to visit especially by boat.
I admire you're sailing skill!
Roger, absolutely loved this video. Hello from southeast US! Please keep doing what you’re doing. Good mix of sailing, scenery, and history. Very entertaining and inspiring! Looking forward to your next video!!
Thank-you, Roger. A fine voyage and lovely commentary as always.
Roger, I especially enjoyed this video!
Love the island hopping.
you are my hero Roger, hope to see you more often mate
Excellent video, Roger!! Some scenes, such as the sunrise on the island harbor and seaside homes, are truly works of art!! I would love to download some still shots of your travels! They would be so beautiful hanging on my walls or viewed on my phone while imagining that I could speak the French language and join you for dinner in one of those wonderful little island cafes. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with us.
I enjoyed that little cruise .....thanks
What a wonderful place you introduce to me! Thanks! Love your videos. Regards from Rio.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the the little journey including the history.
It is so satisfying to go out with you, out offshore and return.
They really feel like different experiences (from shore-cruises.)
I am most affected especially when I feel the vulnerability of the means. Your boat looks very tiny in a number of shots. The degree of physical exposure to the elements, mounting waves.
And in contrast, you anchor, prop up your tent, stop in at a pub.
I believe this is the core contrast that is at the heart of some dinghy cruising; the slimness of means against the fullness of the experience.
Wonderful, fantastic but above all so relaxing to watch, Thank you Roger.
Great to see you back in action Roger. Thanks for you wonderful videos and sail on.
Dear Roger. I've enjoyed your video. Very nice island. So calm. I am going to join you as a small boat owner, just when I finish reconstruction of my house, kids grow a little bit and I make some ship for me and my wife :) Hope, You wouldn't be too much old, when I'm ready.
Thanks again Roger.
As educational, phylosophical and visually stimulating as usual. Please keep them coming!
Roger, great to see you on the water again. Have been doing similar on Lough Derg in Ireland over the summer. A rope as an extension between the car and the trailer is a great trick for all slips and keeps everything safe. Happy sailing!
Perfect just what I needed, a new video from Roger. Always a treat 🤗 ty Roger!
Love your video's... Always enjoy them and you book too!
I'm so glad you are OK. Thank you for pointing out some of the marks along the way. It enabled me to roughly follow your passage on the chart and to see your route and guess at some of the piloting decisions you must have made. Superb piloting and navigation, a joy to watch. Doffing my cap to you. The explanation of some of the history and geography were also great. Thank you, most enjoyable.
Enjoyable. Still have lots of questions. How about a video about your sail and running rigging? Why tanbark? What sail material and why? Small bolt rope in foot and leach instead of reinforcing patches at the corners; why? Clipping on the sheet when reefed? Is speed on any particular point of sail reduced by the lack of a boom? Etc. How close is the sail to designers specs? Could the sail be larger or lighter for light air? Are you happy with the reef point positions? Rake of mast necessary? etc. -
Thanks for sharing
Glad you’re back, Roger.
Keep up the good work Roger, love yer boat!
Thank you Roger, that was great, just what I needed to watch.
Best wishes
Al
A true tonic. Lovely cruise to a special island. Tx
Thanks Roger. I found the trip to the Île de Sein absolutely fascinating.
excellent
a great adventure with plenty of information
That was so enjoyable; thanks for posting.
Greetings from Salt Lake City, Utah in the USA. Another very nice video Roger. I am amazed at your adventures. Thanks for taking us along.
so natural, and timeless, since tin ingots and tribes traversed the tides. Chapeau !
Hi Roger - another enjoyable video! Just a bit of trivia for you - you probably know that the Breton, Cornish and Welsh languages are closely aligned. You only have to change one letter of Avel Dro (to Awel Dro) to make it mean the same in Welsh - a 'varying breeze' or 'turning breeze'.
Yes, I never know if the correct English translation is whirlwind or wind shift. Probably the latter is closer.
Glad to see a new video. It is nice to watch your adventures.

Great video Roger, thank you.
I learn something new each time I watch them and try to use it when I sail my Shetland Yoal.
so glad you’re back haha there is no lockdow for a free mind like you...
Roger, thank you very much for this lovely and inspiring video and for the history you shared. Greetings from Australia by the way. I am almost finished a small boat building project commenced just before the COVID lockdown. I am looking foreward to getting it on the water.
Amazing. I love your stories. You need to come Finland. We have huge archipelago here in Finland, thousands of islands, no tide and thousands of nature harbours too. Just suitable for small boats.
Beorninki I’d love to!
Counter currents and STUFF.
It is the stuff that you really have to look out for.
Thanks for keeping us educated and entertained.
