May I say Sir that the way you filmed that made us feel we were there with you all the way. The water splashing was almost felt on my cheeks. The apprehensiveness in your face of setting sail with two reefs showed us your experience of capsize was also playing on your mind. Thank you for allowing us to experience this trip with you.

I sail a 19" 10" Caledonia Yawl that my son-in-law and I built together. We've had some fantastic cruises on the Columbia River here in Oregon and Hood Canal, up in Puget Sound area. We had a seal try to board us about 5 times during the night at one anchorage. The building was incredible! I paused the video and really admired it! Well done!

Thanks, Roger, a lovely capture of what was evidently a fun weekend. My wife and I used to cruise in a Dockerel 17 many years ago. Once spent a whole fortnight onboard, between Gosport and Poole. Many adventures ... then kids arrived and we had to move up to a boat with a lid. More recently, working in New Zealand and with the kids grown up and away, we cruised a Hawk 20. Love the freedom and simplicity of the open boat and always relish the switch of the atmosphere and personality that occurs with the ‘conversion’ from sea-boat to sea-tent. We’re now sailing a Moody 376, which my wife loves, but there are many days when I hanker after dinghy cruising days. Sail on, sail well .. Roy

I’m enjoying your videos, Roger. My boat is a 17 foot swing-keel sloop with boom, jib and all of that. I’m intrigued and envious of the simplicity of your rig, from tipping up and securing the mast, to the loose-footed gaff rig. Yet it seems to scoot along quite well. I’m curious why you don’t set up a bridle, though. If I had to undo and re-fasten the sheet on each come about I would surely soon have it torn out of my hand, and that would be an adventure recapturing it. Thanks for the invite to sail with your group, but first I’d have to round the horn and cross “the pond”, as I am in N. California. I sail with a group of small trailer sailers called the “Potter Yachters”. Google them - they do some fun adventures. (The boats are smallish, not the sailers!)
Excellent again Roger! Re. 'your' building did you design the whole frontage or only the RHS and if so why the change half way across? Blending the style of the building on the left into yours and then taking it to a more modern layout? Interesting. Loved all the nav details you gave us and the range of camera angles. Good work. And the sound seemed spot on too. I've recently purchased a 15ft Finn olympic class dinghy, hardly anyone's first choice for a cruiser but we shall see what I can make of her.

Great video! If it were me though, I suspect I may get fed up with that sheet block arrangement that needs moving every tack! There must be some modifications possible to fit a traveller and still accommodate the rudder?
There is no room with the steering being transom hung, he would be forever dodging a tangled mess... besides it adds to the sheer poetry of handling such a lovely craft. The beauty lies within its simplicity

i want to use your boom-less system on a 27 foot boat. How well does it work downwind. It seems like a very simple and effective system. I never cared for my boom because it can hit novices on the head. And I also just want to try something different.

4.5kn generally. Any faster than that and she starts surfing, which risks a broach, as she doesn't have a planing hull, and the rudder tends to lose grip on the water. We once surfed at 16kn on the waves on Bideford Bar. I'd not want to do that again though....

By the hull form, I would say you have a worthy sea boat. High freeboard, plumb bow yielding a long waterline - probably tracks well, I'd imagine.

We completed the terrace, which was late Victorian. That's why the style changes.

Tools and other bits and pieces. They're ex-Royal Naval containers, used originally for flares and the like.
