    My 2016 Forester XT is awesome! Cobb stage one, Nameless exhaust, Mishimoto intake. Broke it in good, hard. No oil consumption, ZERO! After 4000 miles, 5.2 quarts synthetic in, 5.2 quarts out. AMAZING! Driven hard, fast, and it loves it. Subaru fan for life.

    Jump to 5:47 if all you want is to hear me talk about a few questions I always get. 1 of which being oil consumption. Thanks for watching! BTW these are my experiences with the new Forester XT, I can't say how the 2.5's are holding up!

      I've heard many reports of the 2.5i with manual trans., burning oil. What transmission do you have and how's it going for you now?

      T-WRX i hear some people loose oil on this car I think the some problem people the way drive it when first bought it new they did not break in by the manual book.

    Bought a 2014 in the summer of 2013. Changed the oil in the spring and again in the fall. Less than 6000 kms., between oil changes. Always synthetic. It's 2019 today and I have never added oil between oil changes. I don't get it with the oil issue. My 7 year warranty is done or 70000 km and now I can buy the Cobb access port finally. I'm so giddy! Don't tell my wife. Catless J pipe, 4 inch intercooler. Just for starters. Time to play! It's fast now but like all of us it should be faster!

    Subaru in general has had an oil consumption issue for along time, and yet CR always puts Subaru at the top in reliability. I've had a 2013 Subaru and a 2006 Toyota with the same issue and the dealer and manufacturers never acknowledge there was a problem. to me that's a big problem. Go to CR #73 cars that burn too much oil!

    • @Jason99942
      @Jason99942 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well - that is very strange isn't it. I'm looking at the latest Consumer Reports magazine (April 2018) & it ranks the Forester as their pick for the 'compact SUV' category within a Top 10 list. (Page 22). They also list the Forester and Outback as great picks for seniors (Page 34). There's no mention at all about the oil consumption issue, yet many people are still citing problems online about the latest Forester models.
      Are all the problems, those Foresters, Imprezas, Outbacks etc. with manual transmissions, or are CVT also affected?
      Consumer Reports does have a 2015 article that cites excessive oil consumption is NOT normal. Yet, Subaru in addition to Audi - state that a certain amount is normal. That normal amount of oil burning can cost a pretty penny between oil changes especially when synthetic oil is required. We're not talking about a quart here or there and a few bucks, we're talking complete small-block engine replacements under warranty - multiple times. What happens to your car when you're out of warranty? Good luck.
      This is how Consumer Reports seems confusing to me - contradictory in fact to even remotely recommend these vehicles. It really makes me question their recommendations at all.

    • @wrigman
      @wrigman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oil consumption is directly related to break in..... Subaru says to not rev the motor past 5,000 RPM for the first 1,000 miles. Also vary the RPM during that process. I have followed this procedure with three Subaru’s. I have yet to have a oil consumption problem with any of the three.(14Crosstrek, 16Forrester 2.5, 17WRX Base). The people that have had the most problems are the ones that have not followed proper break in....

      @Hallowsaw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a 2011 legacy 3.6r and have never had an oil consumption issue. Had a timing cover leak which was rather expensive but never had any other mechanical issue

    • @wrigman
      @wrigman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miss July It has been my experience that with proper break in( not over 5000 rpm sustained, for the first 1,000 miles and no wide open throttle when cold)your chances of oil consumption will be less. Just note...... ALL engines consume some oil during break in and even after. It’s not uncommon to consume maybe 1/4 of a quart between changes....

    I had a 2016 Forester XT Premium, did oil changes every 6,000 miles, and it never burned a drop of oil. Traded it in after 26,000 miles for a WRX STI, which burns very minimal oil between changes, again every 6,000 miles.

    Had a brand new GTI about 20 years ago. On the first trip for an oil change, the BMW mechanic torqued the threads right out of the block. Cost me $300 to get fixed and always dripped afterwards. The car after that was a Civic. I put the valve in the day I bought the car and have been changing the oil MYSELF for the past 20 years!

    This is why I drive since new a 2009 Mazda 3 s hatchback 2.3 with 5 speed auto and 195,000 miles. I have been dumping money lately for suspension parts at all four corners and a trans module. A trans module is not a rebuild. At the end of the last 5000 mile oil change interval I got back from a 2000 mile Marathon trip in 50 hours. Car ran like a champ. Did not burn or leak a drop of synthetic oil.

    The Ford EcoBoost has the same problem, because of block ventilation. As the oil circulates and blows out the PVC valve it shoots oil directly into your intake and can cause oil loss. this can be fixed with an oil separator catch can that separates the air from the oil that goes back into your intake and returns the oil back to your crankcase.

    2017 foresters come with a plastic door over the drain plugs. Only on non turbo if I'm not mistaken. It is just push clips to remove it. Working for subaru and my wife having a 2016 wrx. I find the FA20 takes around 5.5 quarts to have it at full. The recommended 5.4 never seems to be enough.

      I actually didn't get 2 years of maintenance when I purchased. But honestly its more about the time saving than the money. It takes like 2+ hours when you count drive time and such to go get an oil change at the dealer. I can do it in like 30 mins at home, its worth the effort to me! But I document everything anyway, receipts, mileages etc.

    Nice review, you do a great job. My parents and I have owned a total of five Subarus. Two Forresters (2004) my parents bought, two Outbacks (2014, 2015) my parents bought, and a 2013 Legacy I bought. Of the two Forresters, only one started burning oil (it was the 2.0 L turbo unit) at 140,000 miles. That is not great but not horrible. I have been the unlucky one with the 3.6L H6. It burns 1.5 quarts every 2.000 miles - which is not enough. It started burning at 47,000 miles. I change the oil every 5000 like you. Subaru claims that now i should put in 6.9 quarts (not 6 quarts recommended) and burn through the extra oil until the next oil change. I burn 1.9 quarts and check the oil level religiously as I know I will have to refill it once before 5000 miles. Subaru says it is good for the environment - my car is definitely not as I put out a ton of burnt oil constantly. I barely passed emissions last time. If it fails next time, I will have a stronger case for an engine replacement.

    Would definitely hope for no oil consumption at only 10k miles! I'm at 164k+ miles on my 2007 Legacy, losing about a quart every 2500 miles or so. Coolant looks ok right now. Head gasket job was done with the timing belt at 90k miles. No transmission issues - that's the deal breaker for me with new Subarus. Just don't trust a CVT to last that long.

    Hi.Chuck (Charles?) - here in Australia I’ve owned 10 Subarus over 40 years (Leone, Liberty, WRX, Outback and Forester) my 1997 Forester got to $425k before the camshaft seized - never had oil/coolant level or head gasket issues and all these vehicles had high kms - only updated due to lifestyle changes - I stopped at 2013 models because of the CVT issues around 60k-100k for the 2013-2017 Forester/XV/Impreza models - I believe the CVT has been Improved for the 2019 onwards? Unfortunately I am seeing Oil Consumption issues on the Impreza 2013 (Canada) now that we are approach our 5th year. The last two oil changes (at 7500 km each) we lost 1 litre of oil each change (down to first notch on the dip stick. Typically all city driving and oil change is done at the 6 month mark. Subaru recommends 6 months or 10,000 km (which ever comes first). Subaru also claims that it is ok to lose 1 litre of oil for 2000 km. So we are off to our first oil consumption test.

    2014 - 2016 Forester had oil burning issue -- class action lawsuit , also class action lawsuit against the CVT transmission. Glad you're not dealing with the oil burning. (Had major oil burning issue and Subaru would not fix it, CVT was going bad but they wouldn't fix that either, and head gasket leaking) All of this below 80k miles, and I changed the oil less than 5k miles and took care of that car. In my experience Subarus are not reliable and the problems I experienced are pretty normal with them. I'll never have one again. Hope you have a different experience with yours.

      Earlier cars have it as well. I own a 2013 Legacy that also burns oil, but it is the only issue with the car after 85,000 miles. No repairs needed (and Subaru said the engine burning I have is normal as it is minor).

    The short nipple fumoto valve is a better choice in my opinion because it doesn't hang as low. I owned a 2019 WRX with this engine for 40,000 miles, changing it every 5000 miles with Motul X-Clean 5w30, and it never burned any oil. I don't think it was ever an issue on this particular engine. It was mostly on their naturally aspirated engines that take 0w20.

I think people just don't pay attention to their oil till it's too late. esp when the dealership tells you 6k+ miles between oil changes(that's what mine says anyways). oddly enough my 15FXT and WRX doesn't consume oil at all. great channel. subscribed!!

    Good video. But I want to ask some questions. Was the car driven before the oil change to warm the oil? Was the oil filler cap opened before you release the old oil on the bottom of the engine? Why do you nt remove the old oil filter during the drain of the old oil? By the way your garage looks tidy.

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it was warm, I did pull the cap to release any vacuum. I was less thorough in this video because I did a video on the oil change process a few months back. I didn't remove the filter while draining the oil because the car was on the lift and I couldn't reach it if I'm honest! Thanks for watching!

    Why wouldn't you want your CVT to "hang" at one particular RPM? That's the whole point of a CVT. Your engine only makes peak power or peak fuel efficiency at one particular RPM so the point of a CVT is to be able to keep you at the peak RPM through acceleration as opposed to going past the peak in your powerband and then having to shift and drop back down below the peak in your powerband, being far less efficient.

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because its so foreign to the what everyone is used too. Your brain is very used to hearing the engine RPM go up and down, it strays from that expected behavior. I agree that the entire point of the CVT is to keep it inside of its ideal power band. But that doesn't mean the sounds it makes aren't irritating. Look up Nissan CVT complaints, its a pretty big annoyance.

    • @nathanstrange168
      @nathanstrange168 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      T-WRX Well, I'm not really too sure what to say to that. It's pretty dumb to buy a product and then get mad at it for doing its job exactly how it is supposed to do it. It's also pretty stupid to say "this isn't what I'm used to or have had in the past... so I don't like it."

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha I didn't say it was smart to buy a CVT if you hate them, but in the case of the 2017 Forester XT if you love everything else about it.... CVT is your only option as a transmission. So with this channel I encourage people to not let the typical "I hate CVT mindset" prevent them from buying one. Good or bad, it doesn't behave as anticipated when in Sport mode, this is probably intentional by the engineers at Subaru. I'm sure its been programmed to "simulate" gears because they know the majority of the market isn't accepting of the typical CVT behavior. "this isn't what I'm used to or have had in the past... so I don't like it." is unfortunately human nature.

    Very nice video. Now I want a lift too. My 2011 Forester (non-turbo FB25) just went out of warranty and I was wondering if I should keep using 0W-20 oil (I use Mobil1 full syn.) I have seen some chatter around the web that the thinner oil is only recommended to improve Subaru's fleet mileage standard. Is there another weight oil that would better extend my engine life? Using very little oil now at 100,000+ miles even with the dreaded FB25.

    I have over 190,000 kms (118,000 miles) on my 14 Forester XT. The comments saying this engine doesn't burn oil are simply false. For the first 15,000 kms this engine used a lot of oil but afterward became tolerable in warm months. However, in very cold temperatures oil consumption gets worse until when the ambient temperature falls below -30C this car is basically useless as it will burn 1 liter in 300 kms. When the temperatures improve the oil consumption mysteriously disappears. Subaru dealer seems unable to even have a suggestion what the issue is. Also had a cat failure around 130,000 kms which the dealer did not want to cover with warranty, probably related to oil issue. I wish I had not bought this car. Engine is now running extremely poorly especially at idle. I am thinking this is probably a valve issue due to oil consumption and the direct injection not cleaning the valves. My last Subaru. :(

    Thanks for your nice video. I have one question, how easy is it to change or clean spark plugs in a boxer engine ? And the how is the general maintenance and repairs of a Subaru engine compared to conventional engines. Does it requires specialized training ?

    • @TWRX_Chuck
      @TWRX_Chuck  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spark plugs are a little hard to get to than an inline motor where they are all on top, but it can be done. Maintenance is similar to most other cars, nothing really different except a few jobs are made a little harder to do when its time. Spark plugs, head gaskets etc.

      Spark plugs are pointless item to mess with. Once you get the quality Denso units, they are good for 200k miles.

    • @FCFordLord
      @FCFordLord 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Y10Q Spark plugs are a wear item, it varies by car as to how often you should change them.
      Generally, 30-50k is the max you can get out of them.
      If your car burns oil, expect less. One of my Subaru's burned oil, by 15k miles the plugs would be out of spec and covered in thick deposits.

    • @Y10Q
      @Y10Q 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you are constantly loading the engine or racing it to redline, you will never see any difference between 200k mile units and brand new ones. If the spark plugs are constantly being damaged, you got bigger fish to fry. I have put over 230k miles on my 2001 wagon and most of that on single set of spark plugs. The more you mess with them, the more of a chance you have to fuck up something. I only change the spark plugs when I first get the car and leave it till the wheels fall off. This is not a lawn mower we are talking about.
